This video came about by the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative asking basically whether I wanted to interview some of the leading experts in their field, to which the answer was obviously yes, so big thanks to them. They make some fantastic videos diving a little deeper into the field of humanitarian response, including one that just came out here:

I remember the massive catastrophe in Haiti. I have a friend who dropped his life and went there to help personally. He found that it really is true that the logistics really were the key to getting help organized and to the right place at the right time.

@Will Black lol amazing, I love this community
I too remember that disaster, a co-worker booked her vacation in a resort in Haiti days before the earthquake. Everyone told her not to go, but she kept her reservations and (despite the infrastructure collapse) managed to make it there.
When she came back she was furious that there was no reliable electricity and therefor no ice cubes for her drinks, or air conditioning. She complained that most of the sight seeing ventures were closed and there were no other guests and minimal staff (because everyone; foreign guests included, ditched their vacation and resort jobs to help).
Great respect for all the people, countries, relief organizations, and US Navy that lend their hands to help.
Zero respect for my co-worker.

For many years at my old school, we had a club that produced bedding and sent it to Haiti. Using milk bags, we would weave it on a loom creating a recycled durable and easy to make pad to sleep on. 2 nights ago, a tornado swept through my city, Dallas. This is very well timed.
Did you see the tornado?
Alan Fox very few people saw it. I didn’t even know about it until it leveled my neighbors’s house
No deaths, few injuries. Mostly Infrastructure damage and some temporary power loss. Almost a typical 1st world "disaster"
insurance adjusters have converged and construction companies are writing estimates. Most of the US doesnt even know this happened to Dallas. Its barely news worthy....
I live about 2 miles north of most of the damage and it's worse than I expected actually. it hit alot of higher income areas so they should be fine.
Michael Mccarthy houses, schools, and churches are leveled. People are still trapped in their houses waiting for help. Kids won’t be able to go back to their school for the rest of the year. Power will be out in areas for weeks. Billions of dollars of damage. You have no idea what you’re talking about.

i went to Haiti last year, and you could see how the country is still recovering from the earthquake. many building there haven't even begun reconstruction. they still just don't have a government big enough to regulate that
4 billion dollars of aid in 3 months, and still rebuilding. That's corruption
@@stevencooper4422 corruption was the one word we heard more than anything. everyone who lives there or visits often agrees that the government is extremely corrupt.
As a Dominican I remember the earthquake, here in Santo Domingo it was a big shake. Sadly the lack any construction code caused that disaster.
I had some friends from my church who went on a humanitarian mission to Haiti and their flight landed just hours before the earthquake happened. Thankfully, they all survived.

THIS is the HIGH QUALITY CONTENT I subscribed for.
What they really could have used, is one of those inflatable OR's/hospitals.
They inflate into a sterile operating room, fully equipped with air seals in case of a pandemic like ebola, as well as climate control and electrical outlets hooked up to generators.
They can be air dropped in, inflated and completely set up within 90 minutes. Multiple units can be attached to one another to make a full hospital. That includes triage, examining rooms, pre/post op, X-ray, offices, etc. You name it, and they can be linked up and operational in the time it takes to watch a movie.

"poorly funded government" the countries' leaders drive Mercedes and BMWs.
corruption is everywhere
When Haiyan hit the Philippines, the Vice President at that time repackaged relief goods from abroad so that they looked like it was from him. Others also replaced some items (like Spam) and replaced them with local ones because they were expensive goods and a waste to just give out to poor people.
Also it always interesting to see countries who don't have the capacity to respond to the natural disaster make the relief efforts wait to do customs check, while people are dying for those supplies!
It's always those 3rd world countries which insist that the relief effort must flow through their own people so the corrupt govt can pick and choose the good stuff!
