  • Our farm house needed a serious deck overhaul. With lumber prices soaring to heights never-before-seen we had to get creative. The secret to saving a lot of money building decks... well actually two secrets, during Covid is 1) SAVING THE STRUCTURE and 2) Doing it Yourself ! Even a very old deck may be old and rotten but more often than not the structure can be saved... and that's exactly what we did. But if you're building a deck there are more secrets and tools out there you probably didn't know existed. We're going to show you all our hacks, tips and tricks to fix your deck. But the deck isn't the only project. We have a 800 square foot stone patio going in... only thing is, the plan has changed. Yes, I broke my main rule and changed the plan mid project. But don't worry this is going to be much sexier!

Jeff's safety advice is common sense and it works for him, I appreciate. I.e. don't use safety glasses when the risk is acceptable and especially if it actually obscures the view of what you need to actually pay attention to. However, have you ever seen Jeff ignore a beam of removed wood with nails sticking out, or skimping on structural safety? No, never! Keep it up Jeff, big fan of the channel, great work Max too 👍🏼

You should link the tools in the description...with as many subscribers as you have, if you reach out to the company, you can probably get a promotional discount for you and maybe you subscribers too. Its not gonna happen always, but any free tools that are worth a flip, are always welcome. The camo screw gun extension is obvious but what's the deckboard clamping tool for closing the spacing up? I just saw the camo company shout out...lol spoke too soon

Amazing video as always Jeff! Really helped me in my projects. One thing that I would have liked to have explained a bit more in detail is how you level things. I watch all your videos and it seems this is something "taken for granted", you just go ahead and fix it or the video is cut right when you are leveling. But I'd say it's definitely not trivial for us noobs :) For example the post at around 12:20. I ran into the exact same problem putting posts on my deck and it was really a nightmare to level it! It would have been great to know tips and tricks in this regard from you. I can see you fiddle with the impact driver but not entirely clear as a noob how exactly you do that. Similar thing at 21:43, you realize the rail is not leveled "oops!" and then magically it's fixed. I'd love to know how you did it!
TLDR: I think it would be nice to add a video about "how to use your level" to your "how to use your tools" series covering for example:
    * How to use a level?
    * Why is the bubble smaller than the markers, so it's always harder than it should to have it dead centered?
    * How much of an error do we make if we don't have the bubble dead centered?
    * How to install something (e.g. a post) leveled from scratch?
    * You have installed something (e.g. a post) and after the fact you measure and realize it's not leveled. How do you fix it? Can you re-use the same screw holes for tilting it ever so slightly, or do you need to use completely new holes?
    Thanks!!

Jeff, I'm not sure if it's true or not in Canada, bc I know things can be different. But have you found that the red chalklines stain? I have found that to be the case here. The blue seems to clean up so much easier.

no reason to put that drip edge on over your ledger board if your just going to nail it to the house wrap and side over it, paper should lap over your drip and be taped to it or water will just run behind it and leak in around the nail holes rotting out your ledger.
