Symbolically, Robert can represent an ancient horned god, one of storms, that fights a dragon of chaos, as Rhaegar was the Last Dragon and his actions had lasting chaotic effects.
When Daenerys witnessed Rhaegar's death, she only knew it was a woman's name he spoke with his dying breath. It's not stated which woman, wither Lyanna or Elia. It might have even been his daughter's name.

I actually highly suspect Rhaegar is over-hyped as a fighter. What even are his accomplishments? Being trained by Arthur Dayne and winning a single torney, and that's pretty much it. He even started his warrior training in earnest considerably later in life than most Westerosi nobles, only after he became convinced that he has a role to play in the prophecy. Much about Rhaegar was smoke and mirrors, and it wouldn't surprise me if that was the case for his combat prowess too.
He had no Cred
His only feat is injuring Robert under a very chaotic battlefield situation which we do not know any of the details of, and his fanboys milk it so hard 😂
@@holypaladin4657 I mean, it was single combat toward the end; Robert describes it that way himself. And he walked away, but with injuries severe enough to where Ned had to take the lead.
Saying "the battle was chaotic" cuts both ways, and is therefore not really a meaningful factor since it's equalized. Robert won, but Rhaegar hurt him pretty badly in the process, and that's pretty much the only solid fact we know.
Just being able to give Prime Robert a hard fight makes him arguably in the top ten fighters during this time period, but it's still far from the greatest.
@@Lardo137
It doesn’t cut both ways, because at the end of the day we *know* Robert is a superhuman beast, but apart from this fight we have no indication that Rhaegar is anywhere near that level. Whatsoever.
I’m not saying that Robert was swarmed and Rhaegar had people attack him in the middle of the duel, what I’m saying is that Robert could have been fatigued, already with minor wounds or injuries etc, and that this is more plausible than the other way around because this was Rhaegar’s first battle of the war, unlike Robert. On top of this we can infer from Robert’s character that he may have been quite reckless in his pursuit of Rhaegar and picked up some problems along the way.
Rhaegar injured Robert, but Robert sent his own maester to Barristan (instead of being under some intensive care situation) and may have only been a couple of days behind Ned considering I believe he also saw the corpses of Elia and her children before advanced putrefaction, though I would have to double check to be sure.
The targaeryans in general were overrated. All they had was dragons and when they lost those they were easy enough to kill
I don’t know if it was actually said, or if it was just heavily implied. But it’s also pretty well thought that the rubies on Cersei’s funeral gown are some of the rubies that broke off of Rhaegars breastplate when Robert killed him.
If true, that would be very creepy and 100% in charackter for Cercei. That woman is just something else.
Something tells me, if Rhaegar was still alive, Cercei would spend her day stalking him and fantasising about being married to him like when she was a kid...
She was obsessed with Rhaegar and supposed to marry him before he sidelined her at the last minute for Elia. (Then he pretty much passes her over again by choosing Lyanna as his second wife.) She’d do something like wear his rubies and feel some kind of entitlement to his memory.
@@annavictrix Small correction: King Aerys chose Ellia over her, to spite Tywin. Rhaegar had no say in who he had to marry. Although in hindsight, he propably dodged an arrow with Cercei.

Why dislike his writing?
@@user-id7nk2yz9q bro dislikes it, but still reads his books xd Talk about trying to be different.
@@tamim9266 he may really like the story, but hate the style of prose
Rhaegar was a knight, Robert was a BEAST
To be fair Rhaegar was more of a poet and artist than a Knight, he apparently took to Knightly endeavours like a fish to water, but it was never what he was known for.
Plus all his combat experience was related to tournies and not actual war. By the time Robert met Rhaegar at the Trident, the former had been fighting for months in brutal conflict, and was at his absolute pinnacle of combative skill, meanwhile Rhaegar had never fought someone with the intent to kill him on an actual battlefield.
This difference in experience is, why, I think that Rhaegar used a sword and Robert used a hammer. The sword, to Rhaegar, was probably a weapon of myth and legend, something that the songs demanded a knight use, but unless it was the Morning Star that Arthur Dayne used, which could cut through anything apparently, that's a terrible weapon for fighting another warrior in high quality plate. Meanwhile Robert had a massive Warhammer, which could have easily caused lethal injuries on any location it landed, smashing bones and crushing organs even through the armor Rhaegar wore.
If anything the fact the fight went on for so long suggests that Rhaegar was more than an equal, he just wasn't experienced enough to actually win the fight.
Think this is a pretty good take.
There's a reason why when plate armor became more readily available historically, the men fighting wars moved away from swords and started using warhammers, maces, and pole axes like the halabred. Blunt force trauma from them would absolutely wreck you no matter how thick your armor was. So id say you're absolutely right.
It’s still a crime that we haven’t seen this fight, let alone the whole rebellion, in live action or animation
The only way it could be done right would be through Animation a la the style from the first Castlevania series! Ohhhhh...my
It’s probably for the best that we don’t see it. It would never live up to what readers imagine in their heads and that lack of context makes all of the characters who survived the rebellion more interesting.
Not very epic to see anyway. Robert just shrug off every strike from Rhaegar and deals blows after blows at the vile prince.
@@ucnguyenanh9414 Rhaegar wounded Robert in the fight. It’s why he sends Ned ahead to secure the Iron Throne instead of immediately traveling to King’s Landing in person.

@@rohangondorYou dream of getting filled with Roberts seed
Robert was an absolute unit in his prime, probably one of the strongest fighters in all of the seven Kingdoms
Rhaegar was hardly the greatest fighter in Westeros. As you stated, Arthur Dayne with Dawn is the best. Behind him is Barristan Selmy. Then Jaime. After that, we have the White Bull, who was old but still a very skilled fighter and the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. Rhaegar is maybe the 5th best.
When Barristan is disguised as Arlan Whitebeard, he speaks to Dany and Jorah about Rhaegar. And when Dany says that Rhaegar was the best, Barristan mentions that beating knights at a tourney with a lance is not the sign of a great fighter.
And you're also discounting something. A war hammer is like the perfect weapon against plate armour, while a sword is a sub-par weapon to fight against any armoured knight. Robert only has to get in that one good hit to kill or incapacitate his opponent, meanwhile, no matter how many blows you land, Rhaegar cannot ever cut through plate and maille with a sword. It's practically impossible.

Check Westerosi history as published by GRRM. Almost none of the major players, including Robert had any actual battle experience before Robert’s Rebellion since they were mostly really young men. So, just like Rhaegar, Robert only had ever shown his skills in tourneys. Now, by the Battle of the Trident, Robert had been In several battles and lost only one to Randall Tarly, but we’re literally just talking like three or four battles, as far as training there’s no reason to think Robert had a lot on Rhaegar in terms of experience. His advantage was due, I think, to size, strength and weapon of choice.
Jaime only was only in three battles in his life, first when he was 16, then years later when he fought in the Greyjoy Rebellion then one battle in the War of 5 Kings. Other than that he fought in tourneys where people took it easy on him because his dad was Tywin as well as the Hand of the King, and lotta people say he's the best swordsman post the death of Ser Dayne. Ser Dayne was even against knighting Jaime after his first battle or even letting him join the Kingsguard but Aerys ordered him to anyways. Even the White Book only had like half a page written about Jaime. The book says Rhaegar was the best knight of his time the same way they say Jaime is the best knight of his time. Js

The greatest swordsman vs 120 pounds of steel
Rhaegar is not the greatest swordsman. By this point in the series it is explicitlty stated that Sir Arthur Dayne is the best swordsman
Honestly one came armed to fight peasants, one came armed to kill knights.
A man in full plate is, with a few exceptions, basically immune to swords (they actually developed tactics historically of using a sword's hilt as a club vs armour). A warhammer however is basically ,with few exceptions (specific spiked weapons that can penetrate) the perfect weapon for defeating full plate.
This fight was decided the moment they were on the ground.
@@cgi2002 yep, not only that, Robert warhammer was so heavy that few warriors could barely carry it with two hands yet Robert easily handled that warhammer with one hand. Thats the kind of beast that Robert was on the battlefield. Only fools would believe that Rhaegar had any chance

God, Robert’s armor is so fucking cool
Imagine if Hodor's aka Wylis's mind was restored and he had received proper training? Give him this hammer and send him to mess up the Mountain😂
True but that would mean we'd lose the gentle loveable giant we all know and love as Hodor
@@spongeyspikes09 we already lost him in a move that made his existence pointless. And?
The Mountain was still bigger and stronger than Hodor although when Bran warged into Hodor he did briefly become an almost unstoppable fighting force.
@@Mathemagical55 he was taller. Stronger part is questionable as Mountain didn't train or even do manual labour. Meanwhile Wylis was as wide as he was tall.
Rhaegar embodies the quote "everybody will respect the shooter, but the one in front of the gun lives forever."
Nobody says that but gangbangers.
Only morons take life lessons from rap songs.

Can't wait to have them put a non binary trangender person of color as Robert when they finally make the series!!! it'ss be soooooooooooooo awesome!!!!!!! it won't suck at all!!!!!!!!!

Hmm...In addition to Rhaegar not being remotely close to one of the best knights in Westeros, we also don't actually know the name that Rhaegar whispered in his dying breath. It's a theory/assumption that he actually says Lyanna Stark's name, but it could also be his wife's name he said. Most likely Lyanna's of course, but we're never told whose.
Oh we gone ignore Ser Barristan and the Old Bull I see
It is all about the decadence.
Robert was a soldier, he was super fit and was always clean shaved. Some people have brute force like the mountain, some people have the discipline like Jaime. Robert had both, very few people could stand a chance.
The moment the war is over and his love lost, he was already dead.
"Most epic fight ever."
Just you wait until Gwayne Corbray vs Daemon Blackfyre gets adapted fr. Not many duels get as much praise as their nearly hour long fight. (We need that shit for the full 53.7 minutes and in a single take.)
"-whenever Blackfyre and Lady Forlorn clashed, you could hear the sound for a league around. It was half a song and half a scream-."
Robert is such a good example of a tragic character, would have loved to see him go out like a badass but that doesn’t really fit in ASoIaF’s theme and I respect Martin for not going fan service on us. Still though would have loved to see Robert take somebody on like Ser Gregor or The Hound or even Jaime even if he would have ultimately lost. Hopefully we’ll get a scene like that in The Dunk and Egg series with proto Robert aka Ser Lyonel Baratheon aka The Laughing Storm
Lol I don't think Rhaegar was 2nd to Arthur with knights like Barristan still out there. And Robert was a beast not just because of his size but he is a talented warrior.
this is the kind of fantasy writing one can die for.
They should have done a series of the rebellion instead of the dance of dragons
I said this from day 1 and they only did the dance because of the dragons fighting each other 🙄 if we being honest and you understand Westeros history their where several better stories that they could’ve brought to life.
@@hitman29hardiman54 yeah I totally agree with you if they didn’t want to do the rebellion why not the rise and then the doom of valyria would have been so much better if they wanted to bring more dragons in to it imagine a series that took what were shepherds to then becoming the the masters of dragons and how they was able to bind the dragons to there blood and then what brought on the doom could have been amazing
@@hitman29hardiman54 imo it should have been dunk and egg, only 3 eps sure but thats it. this hotd is going to go for multiple seasons but since noone can write got dialogues (seriously) better than grrm, it is going to suck

Good for Robert, I can't imagine any spoilers about Rhaegar that don't make him a selfish bastard who had it coming.
We don’t know if he said Lyanna’s name… He said a woman’s name, could be Elia or Rhaenys or Rhaella
If you're referring to Dany's vision, wouldn't she react differently to that? Seems strange that she would think of those as just "a woman's name".
@@perlundgren7797 we only know Rhaegar said a woman’s name before dying because of Dany’s vision in her POV chapter

He was direct descendant of thor by all means . Truly a storm born
Wouldve been an epic fight to see. Rhaegar was stated to be the greatest lancer in westeros, but was forced to use a sword when they fought on foot. In knee deep water no less that greatly favored Roberts fighting style. Would have loved to see them fight on solid ground to see what would happen.
Rhaegar being the greatest knight in the realm doesn’t mean he was the best fighter, it was everything else about him that elevated him to great.
Rhaegar was a jerk. Poor Princess Elia and their two children should have been his last words.
I wish they made a show about this era. It would be so good.

That is probably what any potential prequel series would illustrate.

Rhaegar the greatest knight to ever live : didn't even fight anyone before the battle of the trident except tourneys.
Abandons his wife and children to the wrath of his father and later the rebels . Despite having enough support in kings landing to actually help them escape he never bothered and instead went to lyanna to have the promised child.
Unless u r Jamie lannister barristen selmy or Arthur. Facing Robert in his prime is a horrible life decision. Guess he thought the gods were on his side ahaha .
Rhegar was forced to come back after his mistake wifh lyanna. If he wasn't a coward the war could have ended sooner and less death but that's probably a good thing as robert showed them what a real man looks like and follow him while rhegar was as green as his boys in his army.
Also to any rhegar defender. He also led to his kids deaths meaning he failed prophecy 3 times showing he was a looney ans that's regardless of who aegon's lineage is being rhegars son. Black fire or a random valarian kid. Dude is the definition of "don't trust prophecy"

There are certain fights that two opposite sides fight because it is what they have to do. Like Solid Snake vs Grey Fox. No hatred just fighting for your side. Or like Ned Star vs Arthur Dayne.
But then we have this. I think Robert was like Doom Slayer mode when he finally caught Rhaegar and kept swinging at him. Hell, with his rage, I am surprised he stopped beating Rhaegar. I would imagine he kept on hitting him until someone be like "Robert he is dead that is enough".
what I love about Rhaegar's character is how he's dead by the time Game of Thrones starts and goes on and his presence is still felt and shaped the story without him even being there and you don't even get flashbacks

Nah, the acting is what mattered, that's why it worked so well no one cares about that small detail to get a worse actors that doesn't have that iconic look between rough and soft like Robert's actor had.
I think it was fine, the actor who played Robert was perfect for catching his character, just not his physique

Reminds me of a scene from the old Kevin Sorbo Hercules series where he's have a friendly sparring fight with his friend Aeolus. Aeolus is dancing circles around him, hitting him over and over, bragging about how he can land twenty hits for every one Hercules can. Then Hercules reminds him that he only needs the one hit. lol
Rhaegar was only better than some trained nobles his age. So the fight between him and Robert wasn't epic.
True. He doesn't know what he us talking about
@@herozero7484 He was only better than the Tarly boy who attempted to take out Robert. All nobles like Rhaegar receive combat training since childhood, so it's no surprise that Rhaegar was good at fighting. But he would never tap in the level of his Kingsguards and Robert.
As someone who has only ever read the books, watching these videos for me is like
"Did you know, in the books tyrion is actually a dwarf with mismatched eyes. He is also a Lannister, whereas in the show, he is an 8 foot tall goat that belongs to Theon Greyjoy, the king of Quarth. Another detail that was changed in the show, was the character of Viserys Targaryen. In the books, he's very cruel towards his sister Daenerys and hurts her. He also dies in the first book, wheras in the show, he's kind, beloved and generous character that is very shy but very lovable. He becomes the king of Winterfell after marrying Eddard Stark in season 11. As you can see, the books are slightly different "
I get that your joking on the yt but damn you lost me
We need to see this battle. We only heard stories and one can only imagine.
I think Rhaegar thought he was a lot more badass than he was. Being a prince means winning any tournament you participate in because no one in their right man would ever purposely wound a prince. On top of that, he was obsessed with the idea that he was some kind of chosen one. In reality, just a big fucking dude with a hammer kicks your ass out of nowhere.
It is pretty Obvious that apart from that one final blow, it seems that Rhaegar had the upper hand in that Fight. That massive wound of Robert easily explains this...
The upper hand can switch in a blink of an eye. When you're in a fight for your life and the adrenaline is pumping, Robert could have not even known he was injured that badly, if at all.
Rhaegar got owned by Robert in less than half a dozen moves. And no, Robert did not receive a massive wound. He was injured, but it is never said if Rhaegar was the one who injured him or one of the countless Loyalists that he fought to get to Rhaegar. Either ways he joined Ned in King Landing very shortly after.
That doesn’t make much sense, you’re basically implying that Robert got lucky with “one final blow.” You’re discrediting Roberts fighting prowess
All that matters is who walked away...with their chest and life intact.
@@MR.ZAYI1991Actually, Robert was wounded pretty badly, it’s just not mentioned whether it was from one major wound or several. It was the fact Robert was badly injured that had him send Ned ahead of him even though they were together at the Trident, so the fight must have been a close call up until that final devastating blow.
Like all things George, there is a hidden story here. Rhaegar was likely offering Robert mercy after injuring him, maybe even trying to explain Lyanna. Robert used that as his opportunity!
Yeah, a prefer this theory. I know people have said there were too many inconsistencies with Rhaegar's position on the battlefield. We know that Rhaegar was gathering allies FOR SOMETHING, but it fell apart. We know Arthur Dayne probably knew, and Jon Connington probably knows something.
Lmao headcanon. Martin himself said robert decided the battle during the trident when he hit rhaegar chest so hard it shattered the dude armor on horseback 🤣🤣
He also said Robert was the one charging at him too. Lmao what a coward rhaegar was
What stupidity. You think they say down and had a little chat with cups of tea around. Martin the AUTHOR said rhaegar was smashed by robert's strength. Too many rhaegar fanboys who thinks he's some god
And your evidence for this is what, exactly?
No. Robert crushed his chest in on horseback with his hammer.
This is why dragons value more than millions of humans. I hope Viserion doesn’t get sacrificed in the books.
