Honestly he’s right to panic in any form. But that bear knew about them long before they knew about it. If it was hungry or perceived them as a threat… there probably wouldn’t have been a video
Talking to the Bear really is advised though. One of the big reasons Grizzlies attack people is because they are startled by them and they immediately jump into a territorial 'fight or flight' mode.
Yeah but there’s been a lot of attacks where grizzlies follow them because their interested sizing them up then change in a second to mauling them. A mother bear is another example sometimes they will be totally fine but the second they cross your path if you’re between her and her cubs even if you don’t see the cubs she can attack.
They don’t look at humans as prey, because we are bipedal. Grizzly bears and American Black bears would usually only attack you if they feel threatened, or spooked/surprised. How ever there are obviously outliers as all bears aren’t the same. But with polar bears, none of that applies, they will kill a human without thought, as a food source.
I'd rather this than the USUAL video of REALLY loud Americans yelling and hollering etc in a wildlife video and completely ruining the beauty of the amazing animal recorded !!
I've seen several bears in my 20 years of hiking and if you find yourself that close to a bear you need to slowly back away from it and make sure you're bear spray/gun is handy. Do not attempt to get a picture unless you want to be dinner. In all but one case the bears I saw immediately scampered away from me, they preferred smaller easier prey. If a Bear does not run away at the sight of a human that means its considering attacking and make no mistake you don't get that close to a bear without it sensing you. The last time I visted Yellowstone I saw so many tourists getting too close to big animals I'm surpised nature didn't hand out a bunch of Darwin awards.
Imagine if humans weren't such a virus how many more wild animals there would be. Kinda cool to think about, but also sad. Understandable we had to reduce the chances of imminent death, to an extent, but that doesn't justify the behaviors in the thousand years since we have had the technology to keep the dangerous animals at bay. We wiped them out, instead of learning to live in symbiosis.
Yeah, I read that a bloodhounds sense of smell is like 2500 times better than a humans and a bears sense of smell is 7 times that of a bloodhound. The bear knew they were there from like 3 miles away
They will literally maul you and eat you. They’re digestive systems can handle it. Most often they won’t go after humans unless food sources are scarce.

Haha when I was a child this was like my play ground. My sister and I would always get playtime cut short because our Pyrenees would smell a bear and bring us inside. My mom worked at the park and we lived in king salmon, AK. Bears were an everyday occurrence. It’s their territory not ours especially in Katmai.
For those unfamiliar with Katmai you may want to look up Brooks Falls, located in Katmai. Incredible live cams from June-October-ish. Bears are well aware of people on trails, tho vigilance and awareness always needed. Some of the lodges in area have a mandatory bear behavioral class before allowing guests on trails. Bear encounters are not uncommon there, and very rarely end badly
The National Parks in the US need to do as Alaska does and implement reasonable, strict rules, not allowing anyone who will not obey them on the trails or even in the park.

On the cdt I came around a corner to see a grizzly tearing apart a stump. We let it do its business with the stump and talked a lot. It moved on and then the trail disappeared. It was 2021 and the trail team had not cleared it since 2018. We had to follow the bear to get out. We went over 4 mountains to get to the highway. We took shifts for sleep that night and we couldn't have a fire. Longest night of my life.

bear body language, this bear was curious about them but cautious by pretending to be sniffing his surroundings while slowly moving closer for a better assessment before backing down. He let them know by huffing that he was a non threat. It was checking out the woman but the man scared it, you can see the bear said screw it it's not worth it. if they would have ran it could have ended bad.
I would never be hiking in bear country unless I was with an experienced guide. I don't know if that was the case here, but the man and woman did very good.
I was hiking in BC many years ago and wore a cow bell to make sure I did not surprise one. Still it was unnerving a bit because we were hiking in tall grass. Visibility was about 10 ft.
Bears like the coastal brown bears at Katmai aren't looking for trouble with humans or other bears. If you're threatening them, surprise them, or are too close to a mother's cubs, that's about the only time to be worried.
Wild animals are unpredictable, when you run into a bear, whatever the location, you should exercise extreme caution. Generally speaking, these bears don't attack, but freak incidents occur and you don't want to be the victim of one.

They saw a black bear and it was very curious and started following them. They tried to scare it away but it didn’t work and it started running towards them. Naturally the young men were frightened and they took off in different directions. Three of them met back up and went looking for their friend. Eventually park rangers located him and he had been mauled to death. I also remember reading somewhere that there are more people killed by black bears then by grizzlies
Most black bear victims are the vulnerable, either children or elderly folk. @@lisal.4498 For healthy adults in good shape, grizzlies are far more dangerous than black bears. Black bears rarely attack, and when they do, as I say, it's normally children

When I was in Alaska walking past dark to my motel room that was up 8 steps and down about 5 doors. I heard something and as I opened my room door, I looked back and 5 grizzly bears were there trying to get in a big garbage container that had chains on it. I was within 20 feet when I walked by them , and it was so dark I didn’t notice them… I never walked after dark again and to this day I still get freaked out . Fast forward 25 years , I was working in a bar in California in the mountains and late at night I had no customers, so I was cleaning up the trash and walked out to a smaller garbage container and this time a black bear was there and I walked straight to him not knowing until he ran brushing against me running away.. note to self stay away from garbage late at night
Why did humans build the trail? For the bears? Humans have the right to enjoy nature, too. But there are rules. Trouble is, the bears also are bad at following the rules. I couldn't enjoy a walk in the woods if I knew there were bears out there to get me. So I stick to zoos where the bears and other animals are locked in cages in order to keep me safe. But I understand the human desire to get outside and enjoy nature.
That chuffing and jaw chomping at the end of the video is not a good sign, as it’s something bears will do under stress and it’s one of the warning they give out for you to back off before they attack.
I lived in Alaska for a decade and have tremendous love and respect for bears yet would never refer to them as “harmless.” Most bear encounters end up OK, but some don’t. These people were smart to make noise, not to run, and to put barriers (brush) between them and the bears. You’re correct in it’s good there weren’t cubs! At a place we routinely hiked just outside of Anchorage several people were killed by a brown (aka, grizzly) bear when they inadvertently came upon it’s food cache. These are wild animals.
Katmai is open to public only during salmon seasons when bears are well-fed by tasty fresh fish and not interested in considering people as food source.
Right but that doesn't mean you shouldn't exercise this kind of caution. Freak incidents occur in all parts of the world where it is thought to be "safe."
I would imagine the rangers make sure those bear bellies are always full knowing they’ll be interacting with humans. Otherwise hungry bears get aggressive.
I think you would be amazed by a channel here on RUclips called scary bear attacks. They're always supplemented with direct links to the news stories from where he did his research.

That is actually pretty much demystified. You do not want to lay down or play dead for a grizzly. Keep talking, don’t run, stay together (if you are with someone), and use your bear spray if it shows signs of aggression. A bear that size is also not climbing any trees so getting up one as quickly as possible (if showing signs of aggression) is a good move too.

So if you live in an area with bears you’re just not allowed to be in nature? That’s ridiculous. Just bring a gun or bear spray and know how to handle bear encounters
I've hiked and backpacked in western Montana all my life and I'm 75 years old. I've never been such a chickenshit cheechako as to pack a firearm security blanket, and I've encountered many bears and moose. I've also had three sightings of mountain lions, one of which I had to drive off by shouting and throwing rocks. I do recommend bear spray as a last -ditch defense. Statistical studies of bear spray use show that it's more effective than firearms in fending off a determined attack. If you're scared of the dark and being alone, stay in town. We don't need ignorant people shooting animals just because they panic and pee their pants when they encounter a large creature.

I couldn't enjoy a walk in the woods if I knew there were bears out there to get me. So I stick to zoos where the bears and other animals are locked in cages in order to keep me safe. But I understand the human desire to get outside and enjoy nature.

I lived in Alaska for a decade and have tremendous love and respect for bears yet would never refer to them as “harmless.” Most bear encounters end up OK, but some don’t. These people were smart to make noise, not to run, and to put barriers (brush) between them and the bears. You’re correct in it’s good there weren’t cubs!
At a place we routinely hiked just outside of Anchorage several people were killed by a brown (aka, grizzly) bear when they inadvertently came upon it’s food cache. These are wild animals.

Katmai NP bears seem to be very courteous to hikers. Have seen many videos like this and the bears always seem laid back like this.

FYI, Kodiak bears are grizzly bears that eat mostly salmon. They live on Kodiak island in Alaska. Hence the name.

That is actually pretty much demystified. You do not want to lay down or play dead for a grizzly. Keep talking, don’t run, stay together (if you are with someone), and use your bear spray if it shows signs of aggression. A bear that size is also not climbing any trees so getting up one as quickly as possible (if showing signs of aggression) is a good move too.

Bear spray is enough, you don't need a gun. It's more than possible to fend off grizzlies with bear spray-- you don't have to outright kill them

I've hiked and backpacked in western Montana all my life and I'm 75 years old. I've never been such a chickenshit cheechako as to pack a firearm security blanket, and I've encountered many bears and moose. I've also had three sightings of mountain lions, one of which I had to drive off by shouting and throwing rocks. I do recommend bear spray as a last -ditch defense. Statistical studies of bear spray use show that it's more effective than firearms in fending off a determined attack. If you're scared of the dark and being alone, stay in town. We don't need ignorant people shooting animals just because they panic and pee their pants when they encounter a large creature.
This is why I’m always packing heat anytime my girlfriend and I go on any kind of trip in the wilderness. What a complete nightmare situation. 😂
