I hope he noticed he had the REAL Gaea"s Cradle in his hand at the end and not the fake one. Otherwise he might have a fake Cradle in his binder right now.
Rudy you should buy some calipers to give us exact thickness measurements. And a microscope so we can see the printing better. Don't hold out on us, we know you can afford it.
I like this idea, for science! There is actually a think called an Eyeclops that is a magnification toy that lets you see it thru your computer or tv screen. I have one, just for the lols though.
Only two tests I rely on anymore is the black light test for Revised/Unlimited (still doesn't work all the time) and rosette view at 40x or 60x. They still have difficulty getting the pattern correct or getting all of the print either overlaid on the rosette pattern or integrated with it.
I got an Arid Mesa the comes REAL damn close with the rosette pattern. I lost my 30x loupe, but under the magnifying glass I have at work, the front looks spot on. The back looks like ass though.
Person I know went to China and was specifically looking around for fake mtg cards. Found a place that was willing to print him any card he wanted. Went he arrived there he said that the place was FILLED with boxes of cards and had half a dozen people throwing cards into mail orders. This problem is never gonna go away, sometimes makes me wonder if I should just sell my whole collection, before the market collapses
Used to have 52 duals and some singles from B/U like Berserk, Gauntlet and sometihng like 10 Force from Alliances (2 boxes cracked back then so all mint) and happy I sold em all, now that I see how good the fakes are now. Only have one card over $5 (unless Fatal Push went there now) and thats an original Ramses Overdark from LGS as a Commander card. I still play and spend more than I would have liked (like $3-400 so far) just getting commons and uncommon sets for Commander/Pauper.
If a genuine 1959 Les Paul Standard guitar can still pull $500k after nearly 60 years of counterfeits popping up, your mtg cards will be fine. Just educate yourself and your friends on spotting counterfeits, and you'll be fine.
Same with vintage racing cars. Look at Jay Lenos channel for Pur Sang references. They make perfect replicas of the old race cars of the past and while extremely expensive cause everything is handmade as it was back then, they still sell well and for 1/10th of an original. And still the originals are holding their price tag. Hell, Jay Leno has 2+ originals at $4M+ _AND_ at least 2 Pur Sang replicas so he can drive them instead of the priceless originals.
I feel the same way but when dealing with higher priced cards how do you protect yourself as a seller on eBay? I don't mean ensuring the buyer has a positive feedback rating, insuring your shipment with tracking etc., but rather a buyer that decides they shouldn't have spent the money and they do a reverse charge through PayPal etc... I've looked into selling to online stores, but after emailing scans of cards I wanted to sell their buy-list prices went down by -20% overnight; a coincidence I don't think so.
Oh great! Well now I'm worried since I've got quick a number of pretty good deals on cards, and I'm going to worry about every single card that I buy off Ebay. This is very good to know! Thanks for sharing this dude!
These videos are awesome Rudy! I do have one question that is hard to find an answer for though. With variations in the prints, how can you tell a fake with good thickness and glossiness? I have seen real duals that look fake as hell because of dark/light/blurry printing. What's the best way to tell?
The Gaea's Cradle is incredibly well printed, no way to tell the difference (on camera) unless you know what colour it's supposed to be. #FloppyCradle #FloppyTaco
The brightness of colors can vary slightly depending on the printer. If you look at real $ currency they're not exactly the same. But it should'nt vary too much, if it's very noticeable then it's probably fake. Look at several aspects before you declare it as a counterfeit.
Hey Rudy, sorry I haven't seen every single video just in case, but have you ever covered Spellgrounds playmats? They're a HUGE hit with my local Yugioh scene and I really want to know what actual Magic players think about them.
It's all about the feel of the card still. You can't really base it on how bold the colors are or how vivid a certain line is, etc... I have some goblin guides that people call me out on because they're a really different red color than the rest of my goblin deck, but they were straight from two copies (2 guides each) of into the breach event deck. Wizards still to this day has really inconsistent print quality. My elf deck has some crazy color differences too; my priest of titanias were all from when I played in highschool and man, two look lime green, the other two look deep forest green. I have a few other cards like that: contested war zone (event deck ones look more orange), ichorclaw myr (event deck ones look more purple), I have some goblin lackeys that look pink, and they always have looked pink, it's not an age / sun thing since I opened it in draft and always sleeved / boxed stuff. If you need to figure out if it is real or not and are not sure, find some people who have drafted a lot and touched real magic cards, none of the fakes pass every single touch test yet (thickness, rigidity, gloss, weight, etc...)
In case you didn't know, a lot (maybe all?) of the "specialty" products such as event decks, commander, I believe even modern masters, are all different from regular sets. That could be why some of your stuff, especially from the event decks look or feel differently. The finish especially I notice. They look and feel glossier. But the old stuff like the priest of titania's, yeah there's some variation in the older stuff. But mainly I wanted to point out that the specialty set cards seem different than the cards from regular sets.
I have a couple of cards that look like the ink was washed out. Instead of being the regular red, they're almost pink. It sounds like they're fake, but they're fresh out of the Open Hostility (Saskia) C16 box. I wonder what that's about.
Rudy, do you ever weigh raw cards? I had an unlimited time walk 10 years ago or so that weighed about a half gram less than the rest of my high end stuff. I was fairly certain it was fake as the dot pattern was a little different. I was really suspicious and sent it to BGS and it came back as an authentic 9.0. Later, I did some research and learned about someone that may have used similar process as WotC to print the cards. Do you think there is any chance a real card could have a half gram difference in the card stock?
Rudy, will you please make a video about M11 core set? The EV is over $140. I've been trying to sell a box on Ebay for $155 and I have no bites. What's the deal with this set? I've opened boxes recently and pulled $140+ in value. Is this set investment worthy?
Belgium prints are bit lighter. at least it used to be in the earlier days. I just graded my two japanese anvil of bogardens from visions. its also the feel of the cards. I tend to buy only cards from the newer sets online. the ones with the holograms on it. everything else i trade for in stores, using a light, loupe and feel the card. thats the only way to truly make sure.
Rudy. I have some fake cards, two of which I purchased cheaply as proxies for my cube, and two which were slipped in as buffer cards for a genuine card I bought on ebay (which seemed pretty stupid. show me that you have fake cards so I have to question the authenticity of the card I ordered!) . The cards are: A Scolding Tarn, bird of Paradise, mana vault and a Mox Diamond. I will ship them if you want them, but I am in England so you would not likely get them for a few weeks? Two are from the same maker for sure (M.V and M.D). The Scalding Tarn and Bird of Paradise are different. Dede
Doubtful, it would be really hard to mimic 30 year old cardboard/ink. It's harder to counterfeit old stuff than it is new stuff for that reason. It's perhaps possible for someone to get really close in the "inbetween" era of cards that use art for which there are high res images available (CGI art usually) and before the little holograms were added to the cards, like the thoughtseize rudy showed last counterfeit video. Hopefully WoTC implements some new anti-counterfeit tech beyond the hologram at some point.
do you take fake yu gi oh cards in, cause i have some great fake cards i had in a deck i got years ago that i dont know how they even pulled off selling them they are so bad.
can you maybe show us the light test on the older cards? I have noticed that my older cards look a bit different from the newer cards when you shine a light through them....
Hi long time watcher I just bought a land tax from 4th edition and it feels off maybe a bit thin, would this card being only a 30 dollar card be a target for being faked or is it safe to say its not being only 30 bucks
quick question. I have an unlimited tundra I bought years ago before the legacy boom that is near mint and I want to send it to get graded. people tell me it's fake. would they be able to determine that (psa)
I've bought a few revised dual lands recently and am I'm happy I have a Tundra I got in the 90s to compare them against. Most of the time these distinctions you are describing are pretty subtle. I also have 2 Alpha cards for comparison but no Beta cards also from the 90s (so not counterfeit). They aren't valuable but useful for comparison.
I'm upset that I got scammed but I'm new to the game for just one yr but would like to learn how to spot them in the future. I don't know what to do with them. such a let down.
I panicked a little bit when you had the real Cradle mixed in with the fakes. I'd be willing to put money on that fake Cradle being printed on white core paper. I bought some white core P9 and duals and they were the WORST fakes by a long shot. Luckily, no one well vested in M:tG would be tricked by these if they paid any attention at all. The ones you have to worry about are the BLACK core ones, which I'll be sending you a pile of here in a few days.
Counterfeits are so hard to recognize these days, they get better in quality, while wizards seems to be slipping sometimes (many variances in identical pack fresh cards, mostly in the color saturation).
if you are buying old cards from old sets which are very valuable. you will always be looking behind your shoulder ; i mean ; you will always have that curiosity; if the card is actually a fake or not. stick with new set as they come out. for instance. i own 20 triomes from ikoria. ever single one; ive pulled from a pack or a pre release kit. would i buy any triomes now? hell no. that time has passed. none of my stuff is fake. its all been bought as the sets came out.
Proxies represent actual cards for purposes of deck testing etc. Counterfeit cards are fake cards imitating real cards for purpose of trading, selling, scamming. That is also why proxies usually tend to have lower quality - they can be just papers with names of cards put into sleeves along with other cards. Counterfeit cards ideally have to be indistinguishable from real cards.
The variance in printing in some newer sets is pretty shocking, and I don't recall that in any of the old sets I got significant amounts of. For example, the first three Hymn to Tourachs I got from Eternal Masters all had different coloring.
With a flashlight and a decent camera. These fakes fail light tests. Period. And a high end camera even on a phone can see the inking patterns fairly well.
Skeedaddy187 psa grading is just plain bad. I've seen many psa 10 cards that were obviously off-center. I will only buy bgs graded cards. My best being a bgs 10 revised badlands. This video has guaranteed I'll be staying away from old expensive cards from now on.
if wizards were drop the damn reserve list and let staple cards in vintage and legacy to be more affordable, then there wouldn't be a market for as much counterfeiting. It's not going away any time soon as long as prices are extremely high. many players just want to play and not spend tens of thousands of dollars just be remotely competitive, they are going to go out and buy fakes and pass them at tournaments as real. I can't wait for the time that someone truly perfects counterfeiting so you literally can't tell unless you look at it under a microscope. For the most part, no one counterfeits new cards, people counterfeit old reserve list cards that have gotten far too expensive for most people to afford.
ive been collecting since the begining of magic, one thing i always can tell if it's fake by feeling the paper itself. WOTC has been using different type of papers through all these set. if you know what i mean, touch/feel the paper from ABU set, the first 3 expansion compare to mirage, visions and the newer sets. you can tell right away that they're fake.
hi in the end of your video you by mistake put you real card (gaca's cradle) with the fake cards hope you didnt throw it or mailed it by mistake . Please reply you didnt do one of the two :)
Those fakes are getting better and better nowadays but always lack something. Eventually one of those counterfeit printing scammers will approach the other one, compare their techniques and cooperate to create almost flawless fake. It's just a question when.
I have a "dark beta" sol ring I want to send your way. from what I was told is that they're real cards, but fake because it was not an authorized WOTC printing. Maybe you would def have a more solid answer if you saw it in person.
Do you think the counterfeiters (Who get better every year, I hear they are up to 'version 8.0' now) watch these videos and learn from criticism to produce a better product? How many years until they are selling cards that are basically indistinguishable from the real thing? I found a site online that sells fake cards for $10 US each (The most expensive by far I could find), claims they pass every test
Can you please do your audio in mono? wearing headphones I get a jump left to right all through your videos. And just for what your doing, narrating, you don't need a stereo audio. Even watching with you plugged into my truck auxiliary port, it goes left and right all through the videos. Other than that, thank you. I very much enjoy your content. Keep it up. -Dustin
I hate mm2015 and 2017 because they are fuck'n washed out.. seems like the ink was mixed with water, with a lot of water.. sometimes even the edition symbol is like disaparing..

I get the feeling the surface shine is the most obvious thing to spot on a fake card..
Sometimes that sweet card you find on Ebay is a fake, and sometimes that hot chick you meet on Tinder has a weiner. The internet is a dangerous place.
Affinity for MTG may be the greatest and most accurate statement I ever read on RUclips. Well played sir.
Shut the fuck up
I think he found a weiner lol
Id tap right
I hope he noticed he had the REAL Gaea"s Cradle in his hand at the end and not the fake one. Otherwise he might have a fake Cradle in his binder right now.
Nice catch!
Rudy you should buy some calipers to give us exact thickness measurements. And a microscope so we can see the printing better. Don't hold out on us, we know you can afford it.
Yeah. An electron microscope.
I like this idea, for science! There is actually a think called an Eyeclops that is a magnification toy that lets you see it thru your computer or tv screen. I have one, just for the lols though.
Also a blacklight.
I bought a microscope for this reason and it works amazingly well. Not sure how it would work with a video camera but I think it could be done.
and he should build an electron collider, and invent some collider card test. I know he can get the loan for it.
straight up i dont play or collect magic and im hooked on Rudy's videos
Same.
Was it me or did Rudy get the real and fake Gaea's Cradles mixed up there at end? Hopefully he sent the correct one back.
Not just you.
Nice catch!
Only two tests I rely on anymore is the black light test for Revised/Unlimited (still doesn't work all the time) and rosette view at 40x or 60x. They still have difficulty getting the pattern correct or getting all of the print either overlaid on the rosette pattern or integrated with it.

Best way to win a legacy tournament? Bring a loupe, and get your free matchwins through the judges!
great idea
Rudy you are aware that you sleeved the fake and have the real cradle in Ryan's bunch.
Would be funny if counterfieters sends their copy to see how they can improve their product. :)

New camera setup, Rudy? Picture's real good and the audio quality is awesome now.

Hi Rudy, may I inquire as to what brand / model you use to record the video?
These videos are awesome Rudy!

Rudy! The last frames holding the 3 cards you called them fake. You had the real cradle in that pile and the fake in the sleeve off camera!!
The brightness of colors can vary slightly depending on the printer. If you look at real $ currency they're not exactly the same. But it should'nt vary too much, if it's very noticeable then it's probably fake. Look at several aspects before you declare it as a counterfeit.
If the card is signed by an artist, or if the card was bought from either Star City Games or ABU games then the card has to be real, right?
How do you not have an PSA10 Alpha Gauntlet?
What camerma do you use?! This type of hd looks so weird its like im seeing this with my own naked eyes!!!
Hey Rudy, sorry I haven't seen every single video just in case, but have you ever covered Spellgrounds playmats? They're a HUGE hit with my local Yugioh scene and I really want to know what actual Magic players think about them.

Great piece of advice right there!
where did you get that awesome PoE map.
Um Rudy the center cradle at the end of the video was the fake right?

Hey Rudy. Do you have any experience with foreign fakes? Foreign cards are printed on different print presses than the English ones.
Belgium prints are bit lighter. at least it used to be in the earlier days. I just graded my two japanese anvil of bogardens from visions. its also the feel of the cards. Rudy do you sell the commander decks

Rudy, when you say "pixelation" I think you mean to say "halftone". Look up halftone patterns.
conspiracy time, some of the cards were real but Rudy swapped them out with fakes
Do you think there will come a point where the counterfeits are indistinguishable from the originals?

8:20 is it as floppy as a taco?
Here's hoping you didn't return the 'Gaea's cradle' from the pile of 3 at the end to the sender, as that was the one from your binder.
do you take fake yu gi oh cards in, cause i have some great fake cards i had in a deck i got years ago that i dont know how they even pulled off selling them they are so bad.
You got that ASMR set up Rudy?
Unlock your T1-9's, Shape Dunes and Strand, Don't touch T12's and unlock the rest. Roll Vaal Spark and profit.
FictionExistence VFB or riot
shaped arachnid tomb works well anyway it's fast to clear XD
Omg where have been all my life ... great video , and insight , half I came across your channel :p
can you maybe show us the light test on the older cards? I have noticed that my older cards look a bit different from the newer cards when you shine a light through them....
Hi long time watcher I just bought a land tax from 4th edition and it feels off maybe a bit thin, would this card being only a 30 dollar card be a target for being faked or is it safe to say its not being only 30 bucks
what about cards with heavier/bold ink. Are those fake?
Rudy what play mat is that?
Rudy, question, whats the most money you've spent on a counterfeit card??
quick question. I have an unlimited tundra I bought years ago before the legacy boom that is near mint and I want to send it to get graded. people tell me it's fake. would they be able to determine that (psa)
they should. sometimes they fuck up but usually they will look at it closely. you could do the same with a high magnifying glass.
I wish you called me beautiful like you called the card beautiful.
How do you get a set of these counterfeits
EPIC MAT ! PoE Is amazing!!
I want to see him play a HC league and get rekt
Tbh.. i think rudy will show you how it's done and clear Shaper
Tbh, I think Rudy is to busy flipping. Wouldn't be surprised if he hasn't ever completed Shaper.
Very Informative video, good job Rudy. Keep up the good work!
I'm upset that I got scammed but I'm new to the game for just one yr but would like to learn how to spot them in the future. I don't know what to do with them. such a let down.
lets start a gofundme to get rudy some hand lotion
I've yet to see a fake of an old card up to Urza's Saga that gets the colors and the set symbol right.
Could you make a video where you compare the US and EU market and prices?
Well now I need to go double and triple check the 4 valuable cards I own.
I have a graded 0 fake lotus. I'm gonna be rich.
Nice atlas! Are you playing 3.0?
I panicked a little bit when you had the real Cradle mixed in with the fakes.
I'd be willing to put money on that fake Cradle being printed on white core paper. I bought some white core P9 and duals and they were the WORST fakes by a long shot. The ones you have to worry about are the BLACK core ones, which I'll be sending you a pile of here in a few days.
Rudy pulled out the Gaea's Cradle.
First thing I thought was "The coloring is wrong"
I've got a few fakes that are scary good. I'll send them your way.
would you like 2 good fakes of snapcastermage. I just bought them and had to notice they are fake.
Counterfeits are so hard to recognize these days, they get better in quality, while wizards seems to be slipping sometimes (many variances in identical pack fresh cards, mostly in the color saturation).

I have been getting a lot of washed out looking cards in packs recently... Don't remember getting any like that in portal or nemesis.
The variance in printing in some newer sets is pretty shocking, and I don't recall that in any of the old sets I got significant amounts of.
For example, the first three Hymn to Tourachs I got from Eternal Masters all had different coloring.
I was thinking the same thing. Wonder what Rudy thinks of it?
How does someone like me who want's to get into modern but has no samples of anything know weather or not a card is fake?
With a flashlight and a decent camera.
These fakes fail light tests. Period. And a high end camera even on a phone can see the inking patterns fairly well.
do you also review MREs you sound like that guy
I'd like to get my hands on some of those fakes for casual play.
the last cradle is the right one hahahaha hes treating it like shit
Wow, MUCH better lighting this time. A+ Rudy. #youmademytacofloppy
Regigigagod fancy seeing you here 😉
Hah, funny. I'm not even a fan of magic, but these videos are just too good to not watch.
Regigigagod same here man. I know nothing about mtg
The few pokemon videos that he does are pretty entertaining as well.
Wait, wait, wait... Do you play path of exile or is that just a random mat you had?
Won't you take me to, floppy town.
@Twain Armandi
Gotta make a move to a town that's right for me...
That complete pack fresh Urza's binder made me cream my jeans.
hey rude dude, that copper tablet was graded gem mint 10? the bottom left corner looks a little white 😣
Skeedaddy187 psa grading is just plain bad. I've seen many psa 10 cards that were obviously off-center. I will only buy bgs graded cards. My best being a bgs 10 revised badlands. This video has guaranteed I'll be staying away from old expensive cards from now on.

Rudy's the guy who plays a magic finder every league
this video has me checking ever card of value I didn't pull out of a pack myself.... screw it I'm getting them graded lol
Awesome Path of Exile Map!!
The fake Ancestral Recall, looks like a Revised impression
whats the best fake card you have ever come across?
hi in the end of your video you by mistake put you real card (gaca's cradle) with the fake cards hope you didnt throw it or mailed it by mistake .
Please reply you didnt do one of the two :)
Did Rudy just say, "Schlong sniffing?"
Best part of the video was when he had the real Gaia mixed with the fakes at the end and calls them all fakes.
rudy, can I have some of the fakes when you're done using them for videos? :P
Maybe you would def have a more solid answer if you saw it in person.
would u get fakes buying at a store that sells MTG
You can, depending on the store and their knowledge of card stock, not to mention the quality of fakes.
I bought some at a store that sells them and they looked knowledgeable about the cards
Now tell us where to find the best fakes and how to pass them off. Thats reeeaaalllly creepy rudy.
Well as I live and breathe, a Revised Ancestral Recall!
Keep it up.

Rudy, could you explain how do you make money buying a hundred gran a month of MtG products ?
Step 1: Buy a hundred grand worth of mtg products.
Step 2: Sell said mtg products for more than $100k.
Step 3: ?????
step 4: PROFIT!!(Literally)
I hate mm2015 and 2017 because they are fuck'n washed out.. seems like the ink was mixed with water, with a lot of water.. sometimes even the edition symbol is like disaparing..
I get the feeling the surface shine is the most obvious thing to spot on a fake card..
The light test can be iffy, the bend test is too easy. Go for the rip test!
