- Two years after a drunk-driving crash killed the Felipek family, defendant Amber Perera learned her fate.
Hillsborough Judge Christopher Sabella took the bench as a packed courtroom hung on his every word. He reminded Perera of a jailhouse comment she made about her life being ruined. "Yes ma'am, your life is ruined. But you also ruined a lot of lives and ended three lives."

@@josefigueroa4712 Even if it was $100 to $1000 it's better than killing 3 innocent people, plus the next 50 years behind bars. Chances are it could have been free and she would have turned it down...... we all know people that would bc they think they are fine to drive, until they get a DUI or God forbid something like this happens. She ruined her life when all it would have taken was a phone call. I hope she likes small windows.
She's crying not cause she killed 3 innocent people, she's crying cause she's going to jail.

You have to put yourself in their position. I'm not defending her, but when your own life doesn't matter and you do things that are self destructing there's a posibility that you don't realize that you're putting other peoples lives in danger. Humans have a tendancy to try to survive and when life in prison is knocking, you body goes into survival mode and you can't help but think about yourself because you first need to get yourself out of danger. I'm not a drunk driver or drunkered, but I think this might be the case. I'm also don't have any degrees on this subject lol. But it's easy to hate and want to kill the person who took innocent lives while they themselves are suffering from self loathing and addiction to excessive alcohol. Just something I wanted to point out.

i think because the front of a vehicle is the strongest. unless a drunk driver can ram another vehicle using the side of their vehicle.
@@-that_guy-1674 actually it is because when you are drunk your body does not tense up when your hit which makes you a lot less vulnerable to damage rather then when you do tense up when your sober. Thats why in a ton of drunk driving incidents the person survives. In my home town some drunk dude crashed into some trees going 120 and literally walked out of the car after with only some scratches. And recently with the Raiders, Henry Ruggs was going 150 something and I believe hit the person her killed around 127 mph he had non life threatening injuries. The law in the US is so bewildering to me since a person can do a DUI with the outcome of death and get only 15 years while someone can commit the same offense with the same outcome and get 50 years. It seems like its a game of luck what state the crime is done in and what the personality or mood of the judge is. 50 years for her is crazy compared to someone who does the same thing and gets only 15.
U.S. sentencing laws baffle me, too, and most other U.S. citizens. Parole boards baffle and disgust me even more. I believe that the lack of logic and consistency in our sentencing laws is the reason that our violent crime rates are stratospheric and that we have such a difficult time holding criminals accountable for their crimes- our justice system is a lottery. You might get life, you might be paroled in 7 years, or you might walk free.
There was a lady who killed 2 people driving drunk and she only got 9 years. The body cam video of her after the accident is appalling. She literally didn’t care she killed 2 people and was laughing. Trust me, it baffles all of us.
Yeah. I’ve even seen people get 5 years. Past record also matters, and the calibre of lawyers you have.
@@Ash-kb9hn I remember that. This sentence will be reduced on appeal by the way.
@@chicagonorthcoast Actually, the US has the harshest sentencing in the Western world, and we have the highest incarceration rate in the entire world. We will lock someone up at the drop of the hat, and for the smallest of offenses. Thus, any violent crime problem we have is not because we don't throw people in jail enough. The problem is that we're not addressing the root of the problem. There are lots of people out there who live destitute and hopeless enough lives that they just don't care. They don't care about you, they don't care about me, and they don't care about themselves. They are not afraid of prison and don't have anything to lose.

What a great judge wish we had more judges like this in Australia 🇦🇺

50 years?! That’s cruel and excessive. It’s not justice but revenge. Even 20 years would have been a harsh sentence, especially considering the state of prisons in the US. Also, judges in (civilised) countries must stick to sentencing guidelines, so no judge in Australia would be able to give 50 years for this offence, if they did the person would be resentenced on appeal.

@@00000714ful Empathy and justice are two different things.
Uh, yeah, she’s crying for herself because it’s HER life being thrown away. Just like the grieving father is crying because he lost HIS daughter - he wouldn’t be crying about someone else’s dead daughter, would he?
I feel sorry for the families but this woman is no better or worse than the millions of other people who drive drunk every year. She just got unlucky. The fact that the reporter tells us nothing about the accident except where it happened makes me suspect that she wasn’t even at fault, were it not for the fact that in many states the intoxicated party is always considered at fault even if they were stopped at a red light and a sober driver plowed into them.
Both the victim’s father and the injured woman look messy enough that it’s not difficult to imagine them driving drunk a few times in their lives. If so, the fact that they didn’t kill anyone was simply good luck, in contrast to the defendant’s bad luck. They are exactly as dangerous and morally culpable as the defendant, and just as deserving of scorn and decades in prison. The sense of unearned moral superiority coming from these people is nauseating and if I were on the jury I would be tempted to nullify.
I felt the pain in the father his words hit me deeply
Prison will numb her emotions she won't be crying for long or ever again sadly

As much as this hurts, we children eventually will bury our parents, thats a painful fact of life. No parent should bury their child, there is no bigger pain for a human; thats why they say there is a word to call a child without parents, "orphan", but there is no word to call a parent who lost a child.
I'm not even a mother, but i know there's no way i would forgive the person who was responsible for my child's and grandchild's deaths. Yes, accidents do happen, but she was conscious enough to drive knowing she was drunk, a drunkster who lost it will need help to get into the back seat.

When I was around 22 and drunk-driving early in the morning after a night of heavy drinking, I almost killed a three-year-old toddler who ran out on the street chasing a remote-controlled toy car. He was so small he disappeared behind the front left fender as I flashed past him and I thought I'd run him over when I felt the car bumping over something. I’m a car accident survivor, I feel the pain of the folks affected from this reckless driver, and I also feel like this sort of sentencing doesn’t do anyone any good.
Does a 50 yr sentence stop the next A-hole from driving drunk? Nope.
So what are we doing here? What’s the value of this sentence? It feels like we are out to punish folks but it feels pointless to me. Personally, I’d rather have this careless person indebted to the families affected, and required to pay a stipend of her earnings to them so long as she’s alive. That feels like a more productive outcome than locking someone up for life. Ultimately the public is footing the bill of this incarceration, and right now it feels pointless to me.

That's one murder, this bitch murdered 3 people and injured 1
@@lucasdagreat7620 she didnt murdered anyone, the car killed them. Murder is when you intent to kill someone. This woman doesn't deserved to be bashed for life, for one mistake. I really wish her, so she get free for good behavior after 15 years. Everyone deserves a second chance, when he is not obviously murderer. We in our country have politican, that killed this way, although not drunk, a old man on crosswalk. He is free to this day. This is just sick. According this video, he would deserve at least 10-15 years too. This is totally ill-minded. Like whole "good" America. @@randomgamingzzz1917 she didnt killed anybody, car did. She just smashed the car. You cannot judge one person for smashing the car for 1 year, because noone dies, and another man, for 150 years, because there were 5 or 6 people inside other car. These persons are same "guilty". They are not murderers. You should then jail all persons who drive under alcohol for 50 years. They are same guilty as this woman. Just nothing happened this time. But they are same guilty. Punishement should have some purpouse, this has no purpouse. Eighter jail all drunk drivers, even when they are caught (maybe they would just kill someonebody next minute, if you would not stop them as cop). This is basically execution. So execute all other drunk drivers... even better, catch them before they kill someone. And execute them. They are same guilty as this woman.
