best kerala restaurant, bangalore, bengaluru, koramangala, traditional, malayali food, kappa chakka kandhari, appam and stew, karimeen, pearlspot fry, kappa fish curry, pazham kanji, pidi kozhi curry, duck roast, kappa vada, tapioca, ramassery idli, appam and stew, puttu, mutton coconut fry, meen pollichathu, tender coconut pudding, kandhari ice cream, payasam, chef regi mathew
The folks behind Kappa Chakka Kandhari restaurant take their food rather seriously, after all their menu is a showcase of Malayali fare based on their collective memories of growing up in Kerala. And spearheading this unique ‘nostalgic’ culinary initiative is Chef Regi Mathew, who has spent more than a decade extensively touring his home state, exploring recipes and connecting with cooks across homes, community kitchens, and even toddy shops. The resulting food is a labour of love, with ingredients sourced from micro-regions in Kerala to match the provenance of the dish, for instance the rice for the fabled Ramassery Idli comes from Palakkad, the home of the idli, the karimeen (pearl spot fish) from Vaikom, Kottayam, and so on… This fastidious approach to sourcing also seems to extend to the kitchen hands at KCK too, who hail from traditional kitchens and homes in ‘God’s own country’. In this episode, I partake of a lavish lunch that spans across a dozen preparations, made possible by their innovative menu approach that allows for diners to savour a string of delicacies in the course of a meal. Hope you enjoy this one, take care, stay safe and happy eating!
Note:
The set menus at Kappa Chakka Kandhari are priced upwards of Rs. 475 (usd 6.5) and in addition to a tasting of seven preparations, include a beverage and dessert too. Additional add-ons (limited servings), kappa vada, koorka fry, ramassery idli with chicken curry, are priced at Rs. 100 (usd 1.4) per dish.
Rajayogi Meal
A set menu that’s fit for a king, this smorgasbord of a dozen dishes is sheer indulgence! Begin with juicy prawns in a coconut-kokum masala that is steamed in a petite banana leaf pouch, spicy ‘touchings’ of needle fish, the plumpest soft shell crabs, and a delicately flavoured pearl spot fish draped in a robust, toddy shop masala, amongst other delicacies that include a peppery chicken peralan and a slow-cooked mutton coconut fry. After an interlude of a sweet, sour and spicy, pineapple-nendram relish, the main courses troop out - pidi, tiny rice dumplings steeped in coconut milk and served with a flavourful simple chicken curry, a velvety mutton stew and appam combo, and a prawn puttu biryani that hits the spot. For dessert, there’s much to choose from, we tried the chilli-pricking kandhari ice cream and the luscious tender-coconut cloud pudding.
Rs. 1475 (usd 20.3)
9/10 (overall) The pearl spot fry, mutton fry, soft shell crab, pineapple nendram relish, mutton fry, appam and stew - 10/10
Kappa Vada

8/10
Koorka Fry
Rs. 100 (usd 1.4) add-on serving

Ramassery Idli With Varutharacha Chicken Curry & Sambar
The idli is aromatic and soft, slightly pasty, and has a bit of a weight that lends to combining with the sambar or spicy chicken curry.
Rs. 100 (usd 1.4) add-on serving
9/10
Ayakora Nellikai Masala Fry
A fish fry inspired by frugal tribal traditions, the fish is spiced with a paste of sun-dried gooseberries, green peppercorn and kandhari, bird’s eye chilli. Rs. 375 (usd 5.2)
8.5/10
Cloud Pudding
10/10
Kandhari Ice Cream

Gooseberry is not really a souring agent. In addition to sweet, sour, spicy and salt, there is a fifth taste classification in Ayurveda, - astringent, - in Tamil it's called 'thuvarpu' and gooseberry and nutmeg are the typical examples of this taste.
I like how all Kerala dishes are served over banana leaves even at good restaraunts. They give great respect to their culture. Gotta learn from them here in Karnataka too
Tamil Nadu dishes are more inclined to that tradition.only for sadya ,we use the banana leaf
In coastal Karnataka also serve with banana leaves. Please don't say Kerala restaurants only serve with banana leaves.
@@bsprasad3678there are no posh fine dining restaurant like the one in the video in coastal karnataka that serve their dishes on plantain leaf ..
@@shettyroshankumar Yes. I agree. My disagreement to the coment like "they have great respect and Karnataka should learn from that". If in that case why people selling banana leaves at K R Market?
It is common to use banana leaves wherever banana plants grow. It is also used as a marketing techique in fine dining restaurants.
This is only true with respect to Bengaluru. Because people from different places come to Bengaluru. Only south Indians are comfortable, using banana leafs. Restaurants have to satisfy all types of customers. And also at the same time, many restaurants in Bengaluru, do serve food with banana leaf. When you vist different places accross Karnataka, you will only see restaurants serving food with banana leaf irrespective of luxury or non luxury restuarants. If you want proper banana leaf serving in Bengaluru, visit the proper local south Bengaluru. All the restuarants near IT zones do not serve in banana leaf.
As a Mallu who has lived in countries without access to much Keralite, or even South Indian cooking, I loved this video presentation a lot.... brought back nostalgia in delightful heaps and plates!
This Man is " ART OF EATING"...when taste flows.. through tounge to soul there is sound...."MMM.."....keep it up
He might have been an English Poet in his last Birth. I Seriously Need His Classes.
Thanks to South India, we got to eat these tasty delicious breakfasts, like idli, dosas, my favourite medhu vada and utappas etc😍
Visited Kappa Chakka Kandhari Haddows road today. Delicious..that is all what I would say. Appam with chicken stew, Karimeen pollichathu, beef fry, palada and their signature pudding. Thank you Kripal Sir.
I missed this place..thank God they opened up again...yayyy.
The pictures on the wall itself is so nostalgic to me..catching fish using towels with my sister...😍😍the food along with your descriptions got me salivating...😋😋😋appam and stew my favorite
Man... The way you put those three fingers in whatever you get served, is making me feel like, I am taking a bite and serious that "MMAAAUUHHH" sound is made by myself!!
Don't stop the Good Work! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I love this channel and his description of each of the dishes he eats. He is so respectful and doest appear sychopanthic at all. It is a pleasure to subscribe to this channel. Oh, and full marks for pronouncing Sambar as "SamBAR"(Bar & Restaurant, Baar Baar Dekho) as opposed to the jarring "SamBURR" that north Indian vloggers have adopted.
Kripal is an all-rounder foodie; an expert, enthusiast, entertainer and an excellent food historian with local food knowledge and dialects. Great 👍
Loved KCK in Chennai!! Really miss it.. it’s so great to know it’s opened in Bangalore and serving the same good with same quality.. wow!!
I liked the way you said The AbsolutE with 'E' ☺️
@@globetrotter9212 : bro we are referring to Absolut Vodka here
When I watched an initial couple of episodes on this channel , I thought, here's a guy who is so serious looking, talk very slowly and no exaggerated expressions in the food tasting scenes. But later I started loving the presentation. Kripal is a poet in disguise of a food lover :)
Though I am a vegetarian, seeing your video has urged me to definitely try out Kappa Chakka Kandhari, moreover it has tickled within me, my roots of being a Keralite.Thank you Kripal for such Lovely videos from ur end.Always looking forward to view them.
They have some great vegetarian options too, Viswankh, happy this video struck a chord with your Kerala roots
Great show !!! Somehow from the looks of Ramassery Idli I felt what we get in Palakkad is much softer and fluffy but thin and more inclined towards thick dosa to idly.
Lengthy 🤔 I enjoyed every single second of it, specially it is from my very own Kerala 🌴🥥
I Feel like renting a chopper and flying down to Bangalore to savour these delicacies right away!!!
I want to visit this restaurant as soon a possible and want to try all this unique tastes of kerala
Kripal takes his time to explore every subtle shade of taste present in the food. All these niceties wouldn't matter for already groggy toddy drinkers in a fine dining restaurant.
Wish I were enjoying these delicious meals. Grateful for your post. Thx
Kerala is the king for spices ..
Sir,
Quiet an interesting way the yum Ramaserry idli is made. Watching it being made in the earthen pot ....oh!!!😋😋😋one hell of a Sauna- bathed soft yum idli.😜😋😆.
Been to the Chennai outlet many times. Absolutely out of the world.
What a delicious video! Can't wait for my next trip to Bangalore! KAPPA CHAKKA KANDHAARI will top my list of restaurants to visit!
Eatery featured price does the meal come to
Kripal, it's time you do some regular vegetarian cusines too. Not that I don't follow your non vegetarian dish vlogs, but vegetarian vlogs have good takers too! Nice video by the way!
Sir your videos make my day, it give sense of feeling of having that cuisine with you, and the only source of learning English free of cost 👍
Hi Kripal Sir. Please Do Try Chandrappa Hotel in Mathikere. one of the best hotel in Bengaluru which serves nati style pork cusines serving about 30-35Recipies...

Love from Kerala 💓💪
Wow👌🏻 looks mouthwatering 😋 Greetings from Scotland 😊 Have a wonderful day everyone 🌻
Ur amazing especially the way u show and explanation about items ❤️
Thoroughly enjoyed this show. Brilliant job, it was like being there and having that food. Every region and every variety is covered from Tribal kitchen to toddy shop kitchen! Each item is explained such a way, no words to congratulate you enough. I haven't seen anything like this. Honestly, it is impossible for me to consume all that in one sitting. I could eat only one item at a mealtime! This much will suffice roughly for a week for me, LOL and I am an athletic man with great build. Did you shoot this over several days ? If so, how did you manage continuity?
this one is in my restaurant go-to bucket list for a year, but no company for Kerala food in my circle
It’s good to also enjoy one’s own company every once in a while, my next vlog on the #kripalamanna channel touches upon that.
Chef Reggie is an institution.
Another classic from Kripal
Amazing to see eating non veg food in a substantial quantity in one sitting.Kudos!!!
Kappa vada, AbsolutE Kandhari, Rameshwaram Idli...They open your taste buds & tickle them...!

Superb Kripal and team Gourmet on the Road! You have woken the 'Malayalee' food cravings in me, and I'm sure with all the Malayalee Chettans and Chechis too!
Wonderful that Chef Regi Mathew has opened up Kappa Chakka Kandhari again to serve up some 'seriously authentic' Kerala cuisine dipped in tradition and made by the homegrown toddy shop and home chefs from Kerala!
Kripal sir, Touchings a heavenly word for rural world.

The gold standard of food reviewers
Food Lovers TV got very generous portions for their combos. The last time we went to Kappa Chakka Kandhari, the combo portions were abysmally small for the cost. Regular food portions are alright though. No contest on taste - its authentic Kerala cuisine at its best.
I Love the way you present .Mr Kripal . you are doing amazing work👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Quite a huge place ,this Resturant
The poetic description of Food.... Reminds me lines of Shakespeare... The food is looked at a different dimension after watching your videos... Great going Kripal..
Was just wondering why no Malayalee cuisine for so long....looks like you heard all of us 🙏😁 thanks a million....loved this chapter 👍👍
This vlog is awesome 👍. Came to know a lot of Kerala food
Tried visiting there. But Kripal created such a rush that the place ran out of food. Waited 2 hrs before being turned down. Many others also left without having food

Good afternoon, Sir
😋😋🤭😋 That was one YUM of a kerala food journey. I love 😍 kerala food.
Sir, On the very outset I just love the way you savour the food. It is so endearing. The other 2 gentleman whose food reviews I personally admire are Kunal Vijayakar and Vinod Dua. I remember watching them in the years gone by. The three of you are connoisseurs in my humble opinion. Otherwise why would a simple lay person like me remember them? 😊
Thank you very much for the lovely video, Sir.
Happy you enjoyed the watch, Ravi, thank you for your kind words. 🙏🙏

You have made effective use of fingers to enhance the strength of these dishes! 😍
it's just a myth, i think, that using one's fingers enhances the taste of the food.
i grew up in chennai, routinely eating with my fingers, and i experimented.
the food tastes just as delicious, with or without implements.
@@greentomato4632 agree with you partially. It is the state of mind that matters and consuming food with fingers is very satisfying!
