    For anyone seeking the Build-A-Baddie table or other information I referenced from my screens, you can check my blog, here: bit.ly/2gEmmnd
    The Build-A-Baddie is up there already and it's the best bet for where I'll be uploading further content along those lines. :)

      MonarchsFactory I have my own DM screen PDF if you're interested.
      I also write encounter articles for Nerdarchy.com called "Out of The Box Encounters". All free.
      First series has 50 encounters.
      Second series is up to 18.
      There's also a free starting adventure.

      It's bull clips, as in bull dog clips. Get coloured ones of those. You should be able to get them from any general supermarket

      TY. I didn't realize they are called bull dog clips. I got some and put some colored stick paper on them. So I can use them for initiative. TY. For the info. :)

    I consider GM screens to be a singular form of art. I collect them, and create them for games that don't exist. I love how you knew right off that the "official" DM screen was not gonna have the stuff you wanted. I also really liked that you made one for combat, and one for campaign stuff. Awesome sauce.

    Build-a-Baddie is the greatest thing ever! It might not seem like a lot to you now, but it'll blow you players' minds when all of a sudden Nameless Baddie #124 has a unique ability they haven't seen before.

    From a DM who started playing in 1981, I know you'll be a great DM with your background in storytelling and raw enthusiasm. I'm certain your players will love what you have planned for them. That's really the point after all. Friends getting together and having fun!

    If you don’t have loot crate a great way to make your own DM screen is to use one of the cardboard poster stand-ups kids use for Science Fairs and stuff. You can get 2-3 screens out of a single one, they’re very sturdy and usually only cost like $2 for the poster board.

    I have to say, the build-a-baddie table is absolute genius! Such a simple but great idea. Now I just have to convert it over to 5e... I had to look up what Will, Fort, and Ref were supposed to be referencing. I can see a few other things that may need to be tweaked, (if anyone already has a 5e conversion typed out a link would be MOST welcome) but it's such a great idea, thank you for sharing this!

  • @Geoffercake
    @Geoffercake 7 лет назад +1

    awesome screens! they'll be a lot more useful than the shop bought ones which tend to have very little on them i find. you're gonna be a great DM, you've got actual skills and knowledge that will come in handy when world-building, and you're already anticipating the first hurdle, improvising! no story survives intact for long, don't fear changing things up so that plot flows naturally rather than railroaded, save whatever you don't use for later.

    • @MonarchsFactory
      @MonarchsFactory  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the pointers! Now let's just hope my improvising isn't totally off-base. THIS is what my years of acting were preparing me for...

      one of the best things to remember is from Gary Gygax himself; "The secret we should never let the gamemasters know is that they don't need any rules". I don't need to tell you how to tell a story, but it definitely doesn't involve lengthy rules debates.

    I have not done much role playing at all, but in the short amount I have played I learned that I am great at rolling ones. I made my own out of some 1x10" and 1x6" boards and a couple hinges. Put the 10 inch tall boards on either side and a long 6 inch tall board in the center so you can see the map easier. I also table-sawed a slot along the top so you can insert tabs with names to display the order of initiative. The baddie chart is a cool idea.

    Pretty face, awesome accent, and clearly as easily distracted as I am... I think you're now on my list of distractions. Currently I'm also distracted by the potential of Hirst Arts molds -- I really want to buy all the molds and build All The Things! Unfortunately I have no players and no discretionary income right now, so... I'm torn between wanting to do it anyway and trying to talk myself into being more rational. Thanks for the distraction from that! Like everyone else, I dig your Build-a-Baddie idea. Thanks for posting it on your blog. Happy distractions to you.

    "..But for baddies."
    I am embarrassed by just how *hard* I laughed about that, lololol. Anyway, I just had to download the table. It looks incredibly useful for those random encounters (instead of just having dozens of sheets ready and throwing them together. Lets face it.. you only need a *few* stats to be known (concretely) in combat.
    Anyway, the table should be a fantastic addition to the DM screen "sheets" I'm putting together for my temp solution.. at least until I make myself a more permanent one from wood and brass. Thanks for sharing!

    I've been subscribing to this channel for ages due to the awesome mythology stories, and never realised Dael was a RPG'r. Of course I've been playing D&D for years, ever since my first gaming group back in Berkeley (NSW not California) as a teenager. Matthew Mercer never gave advice like that loot crate idea - which is handy because I have the Magic crate. Unfortunately I didn't remember Dael's code when I ordered the south park crate last week. I use the same thing I tell my customers (I just realized if you switch the first two vowels in that words it becomes costumers), which is a customizable screen. It is a trifold screen (like the usual), but it has Windows that you can slide a page into (think like your 3-Ring Binders for school). That way I can control both the outside and the inside.
    For the last few months of my campaign that recently ended, I used both sides to show the map of the continent (it was a continent broken into 3 parts (Northern, Soutern, and Middle). They never actually made it to the Southern Country, but I never throw away my maps. I like all my campaigns to be part of one large world. So in the next campaign I run, they might return to this place, and then I'll have the maps ready.
    I plan on getting some more technical stuff on the DM side, but for the most part I'm pretty good with the improv of it all. I'm a pantser sort of writer anyway. I have an idea of where I'm going, but most of the writing is from the seam of my pants. Which is good, because of the first piece of advice I give to all DMs. NO content survives contact with players. Sometimes they'll run in the opposite direction, sometimes they'll kill your big bad boss in the first encounter (which I would've been fine with... but they killed him by shoving a spear up his butt).
    The other piece of advice I always give (which I find to be much more important) is to think of Pirates of the Carribean when thinking of the rules. *does awesome pirate voice* They're more like Guidelines. It is up to you to have the game keep moving. Don't let it get bogged down with the rules. They are just there to help guide you where you want, not to be walls in the way.

    • @MonarchsFactory
      @MonarchsFactory  7 лет назад

    ah, the gaping chasm of tabletop rpg planning, I'm all too familiar with it all.
    I myself have several such games that I have planned for the future (at some point). Currently on the immediate list is; viking semi-historical saga, dieselpunk pulp adventure, flintlock-fantasy adventure, WWII commandos, contract monster slayers, swashbuckling intrigue, gothic apocalypse, amongst others. Some are a lot more developed then others, but I mostly hop from one to the other.
    I feel that I'm closer to an actual playable session with the dieselpunk game, mainly as I'm thinking of using the FAE system; but it is just a little matter of scheduling a good time for everyone and myself... which is no easy task.

      I can only imagine the kind of gorgeous art that would come out of your world-building creations! And it is SO. HARD. to schedule people! I have soooo much more appreciation for the work of Jenni, Sarah and April wrangling the G&S vloggers now. I'm only trying to organise 5 people and me, and they had like 20+. Much respect.

      Drawing and designing really helps a lot with planning stuff out. I've also found that writing flash fiction helps as well. Both do wonders to internalise and externalise thoughts.

    But did you put the randomized name generator? That's where Ched and Nacheddar came from. Still the most memorable NPC's I've created... hated, but memorable.

    I've been distracted by the internet mostly. I should spend less time online and more time reading. I want to finish The Tale of Tales so I can start on a new Krampus book I agreed to review (which I should really review before the end of the holidays because it's a holiday themed book), but it's always too tempting to watch RUclips and read tweets.

  • @TheMimiSard

    That makes me wonder what one of my brother's regular games is like. In fact that makes me wonder if he is able to get to regular games right now, because he's been struggling to get back on his proverbial feet after suffering from an infected insect bite on his leg that had him off work for a while and he got behind on rent, and trips to have his leg checked after he got out of hospital were like $50 because he lives up in Woy Woy and has to go to Royal North Shore hospital in Sydney.
    But you know what my distraction has been - Gawain and the Green Knight - which I did add extra on my dA post about the Ragnelle marriage story. But that has also kinda sent me into looking for slash fanfic options that aren't in my previous favourite fandoms - definitely not in the mood for Dragon Age slash (most of it is swamped by Dorian/Inquisitor or Dorian/Iron Bull), can't even touch Harry Potter slash, and most of Hobbit slash is swamped with bloody Thranduil and I hate him about as much as I hate Solas (bloody arrogant Elves, my Silmaril would burn both if she could get away with it), so I went and looked up Stucky (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes).
    I really want to get back into the Sims 3 again, but even there I'll be distracted, because I have three characters in set-up stage across three savegames, and my Istilnan game (a custom world that is an "Elven" town) is still stalled with the Basement of the Silmarils' house unfinished (I kept having the game crash when I'd done a pile of work without saving).
    I also some time need to go over my Nightlands file about High Elves because I have thought up a tad more. And that loops back to RP as Nightlands is a world idea that I would love to build into a workable RP setting.

    Dael have you ever looked at Runequest I used to run dnd back in the 80;s but now my children are growing up I have run dnd for them but Runequest has given them a feeling of less constraint due to the class as they choose a profession or character then develop the skills they want for example my nephew has chosen to be an ogre which I wouldn't normally allow but I only see him once or maybe twice a year so I have time to run two campaigns and he still remembers that he has to pretend to be a big boned human when in human settlements but over the hill ogres are running the show and sometimes causing trouble to the human merchants trying to cross their territory.As a thinking DM you should look into it I have modified the rules somewhat but it fits my needs better than the restrictive class system I inherited from dnd
