Excellent tutorial. You are a very good teacher. It pains me that we've lost so many of this type of life skill. IMO, everyone should know how to do basic sharpening. Dull tools are dangerous and darned aggravating to use...Sharp tools are a joy to use!
Oh I agree sharp tool make life so much easier I’ve lost a lot of these skills too… I used to be a woodworker(many moons ago) but these days I wouldn’t be able to sharpen a chisel of a plane 😢.
This was a very good, no fuss sharpening instructional and entertaining to watch. I use a cheap ($10), slender diamond grit pen that's conical on one end and flat on the other. Keeping the flat side flat on your blade is just as important as the beveled edge. Up until 3 years ago I've been using an antique pair of secateurs but the rusty old things became too loose to cut reliably. My new pair is nearly identical in design to yours and unpainted. Reading reviews I worried about rust. It takes less than 5 min to wipe off any plant sap with hot water and mild soap after each use while taking as much care to dry them after. They remain rust and stain free after 3 years of heavy use, even in the pivot joint. When putting them away for the season I use an old carpenters trick used for bare metal machinery tables - furniture paste wax (NOT the spray can stuff). It's been a great rust inhibitor. I've never oiled my secateurs as I understand oils can contaminate plants. Furniture paste wax is essentially non toxic. Hope you find that works for you as well as it has for me.
Thank you, Eli! One click and I’ve got that nifty tool in my Amazon cart here in the States. Plus, I have a clue about a task I never realized I could accomplish without fancy sharpening tools!
Fellow Scot here. I was pretty much despairing of the state of all my garden blades and began watching videos on how to rescue my Felcos - they're the only ones small enough and comfortable enough for my tiny, aging hands. I probably do need to take my old pair apart, completely clean (including the rust ...), sharpen, replace the spring and put them back together again, but I'd just ordered another pair as insurance, with spare parts. Thanks to your video, I realise I don't need to make this a "big thing" and I should receive my wee sharpener in the mail tomorrow. Turning over a new leaf here and will hopefully not be wrangling with secateurs and loppers with blunt blades this year. I'm no longer going to just bung them in a trug, covered in all sorts of nastiness and leave them to fester in the garage. Happy gardening in 2024.
I just did this for the first time ever on all of these I have, my snips and loppers too. You explained this so well especially how to hold them and how to tell if you have a burr. Thx
This is exactly what I needed to sharpen my garden tools and my skills. Thank you for giving such clear instructions with a fantastic sense of humor. Oh, and I promise to hold to your "rule" of making it sound a lot more difficult. I can hardly wait to say "burr" and "honing edge" when I talk about how I've repaired all the tools. 🤣
Ha ha ha oh that’s brilliant. It’s mad when you think about it, how many of us think we can’t sharpen tools… when it’s so easy. I blame all those videos that make it look so complicated
Thank you. 🤗🤗🤗 I spent a good bit on those trimmers, and I really intend to use them for the rest of my life. You have helped me follow that dream with less frustration.
My fiskars pruning shears were in bad shape as I abused them over the years. I was thinking of replacing them but I found disassembling allowed me to use a full size stone to fix both the flat side and get a nice edge back on. Only took a few minutes to take apart. I like this video to keep a maintenance edge on them as I go.
Great tutorial! I bought the tool you used and it works well. Loved your style of teaching, it was very reassuring and fun! Thank you from Wisconsin, USA
Thank you so much for this video. I have moved into a house with a nice garden and was thinking - how am I ever going to keep it looking good. My tools were old and second hand. So I searched for help and found this wonderful helpful video! Thank you so much!❤
Thanks. Love the portability of the sharpener so I used your link and bought one. I’ll pop it in my pocket whenever I’m using a blade. I remember watching my dad scything the grass and sharpening often…that’s the secret to easy cutting, he used to say.
I love your video made me giggle when your Shaking shears at camera and your comments. But I needed this video and now I'm grabbing my mom's and my shears here i go a sharpening day. 🙂
Thank you. I send off my favourite Felco secateurs to be fully serviced and overhauled (wonderful servicefrom Parkers!) but I'm lazy about the other stuff. No longer - I shall follow your good example. Took me a while to source the Sharpal without resorting to Amazon - but I have now found and ordered one!
Hello from Fennville, Michigan!!! I AM IN LOVE WITH YOUR CHANNEL. I left a comment on another video, the one about cutting store bought basil, and how to keep them growing, and I am so happy that I found you and your channel. Thank you for your knowledge of gardening and sharing it with me...us...the world. I love your accent and love listening to you speak, that and the knowledge of your skills. Thank you so much,.It makes it so much easier for me to look forward to getting outside on our 2.5 acre land and look at my "garden" and work on my gardening skills. Now with the weather turning cold here, I will have to watch your videos from the first one to last one and take notes. (I will from now on call you Professor Eli). To you and Kate: Stay safe and Stay Healthy.
Morning Tavo it's so lovely to have you on board and this was a fabulous comment for me to wake up to this morning :) I went hunting but couldn't see your previous comment on the basil video :( booooo But so happy to have you hear now :) I laughed at Professor Eli, not sure how that would go down with my colleagues though :) Here Professor is a very senior academic position, way, way, way more senior than I am - I'm much more on a TA level ha ha ha ha. but I'll take the compliment. I suspect Michigan has much colder winters than we do. Our problem in Scotland is more that it's colder all year - even our summers aren't particularly hot, but we get A LOT of rain, so it's cold and wet and grey... a particular challenge for gardening :) Now I do have to check... are you a spartan or a blue? You will see my spartan hat in some of the videos :)
I’ll be ordering a new sharpening tool like this real soon. I just placed it in my online shopping cart.🤣 The one I have I think has seen better days. Thank you for sharing this info.😊
I have been complaining for a long time about how fast my tools get dull. I keep saying I need to take a class, well this is it! I've learned to sharpen my blades and order the tool on Amazon. Another step on my learning curve, thanks! :D I've invested in that Sharpal! True confessions, I went a bit spendy back in the spring and invested in some good Japanese secateurs. Unfortunately, after a couple of months I was horrified to see they'd gone a bit rusty. The internet suggested vinegar to get rid of it. I only had apple cider vinegar. It did take the rust off, but also turned the blades and the join in the middle (also submerged in the glass of ACV) black, when previously it had been shiny stainless steel.... I'm not sure that it actually damaged the blades, but the colour change was a bit of a shock and I have resolved to do better and am apologising to my secateurs by buying them a nice sharpener.
Antonia this made us smile and Kate just got all sympathetic that you are buying a treat for your secateurs. Yes... the vinegar can turn steel black but dont worry that scrubs off :) I'm jealous of your japanese secateurs.....
@@eliandkate Thank you, my secateurs and I appreciate the sympathy! Ooh, I wondered if it could be scrubbed off. I have some steel wool that might work.... Yeah, the secateurs were the Gardener's World pick ones by Okatsune. *sigh* Will try to sort them out!!

Go for it! I have loved hearing from you guys saying you are going to go sharpen your own tools now. That is the best response ever to a video, it absolutely warms my heart :)
Brilliantly explained and I'm off to sharpen things! I am obsessive about sharpening my knives and axes but for some reason have never even considered the garden tools. Though it's probably because i'm not really much of a gardener- we tend to mainly cut stuff back when it gets really overgrown rather than actually enjoy the whole process....
@@eliandkate Maybe, but we have mostly shade and are on heavy clay- some things like this and we grow them, but many plants give up. We have a lovely fern area- I love ferns. And one sunny spot has a herb bed, the other some flowers. The shady aspect comes into its own in a heatwave with hammocks...
Greetings from Missouri thank you for taking the time to craft a well thought out instructive and demonstrative video. I really appreciate it and I learned something and I love listening to your accent.😉
*Thank you*! Fabulously informative and engaging video. I can't quite believe I didn't 'get it' until now 🤪 Just got all my rather cruelly discarded secateurs out of the shed and gonna show them some love - and a lot more patience! - with a good clean and sharpen. New gardening me incoming 😂
Thank you for the non-fuss demo of what I need to do. It is a rainy coolish day here in Brisbane so catch up things is the order for the day and sharpening garden tools is on the list. Where would I be able to get one of the small hand held stones and are they available in Oz or can they be sent? Would be so handy. Thanks again for the great tips.
Sounds like a good plan for a rainy day. Get all of those types of jobs done 😀😀😀 I put a link in the video description to a page with the details of all the bits and pieces I use. I got mine on amazon so I'm sure you'll be able to get something there.
Great video, I always love them. You always explain really clearly how to do things. Can I ask, what do you oil your tools with? Keep the videos coming. Thank you from Dublin, Ireland ☘☘🙂🙂
Thank you Tina. Oil wise, just whatever we have at the time. We are both cyclists so we usually have oil for our bikes and that tends to get used for most things. 😀 I'm not particular to one brand or another.
Super useful video Eli - I'm so guilty of not keeping my tools in good nick. Do you know how long that little tool lasts? Does it have a replaceable head?
Hey JB. I think sometimes we are all guilty of forgetting to take care of things :) I’ve had a couple of those styles of sharpening tools and they’re about 3 years old now. Not about replacing bits on them to be honest as it’s not something I’ve ever thought about :)
I have to admit that I had to watch the video twice- the first viewing was listening to your accent for the entirety of the video. Then I had to watch it the second time to learn how to sharpen pruners without cutting my fingers off 🤣
I have watched other videos about sharpening garden tools, never really felt I got a whole story. However your video is totally fab, everything explained. It seems like a simple process, however I was going to use a file. Lucky I didn't.
just come across your channel ,was trying to find out how to sharpen a rusty old dutch hoe that someone gave me , no idea which side to sharpen it ,managed to get some rust off it though maybe its beyond help i dont know , just subbed to you and looking forward to catching up on your videos .
I love this video. It’s exactly what I’m looking for to sharpen a pair of gardening shears I have. However, you didn’t tell us what the name of that tool is that you keep in your pocket to sharpen tools as you’re in the garden. What is it called? I want to buy one. Thank you.
Hey Jack If you check the description you'll find a link to our favourite tools and gear. Any of the bits and bobs we talk about and in my wee kit store there. Or have a search online ... I got mine on Amazon
I don't personally because I dont have any of those types of spades but you, you can use this technique to sharpen spades, hoes, hedging shears etc. I especially like to make sure my home is sharp for chopping at the weeds. It makes life so much easier. And thank you so much for the coffee :) I got a notification this morning. Now have to think of how best to put that towards a video.... (cue evil super villain type scheming laugh)
Awesome Chris…. Glad the video helped. The bubble wrap was because this video was filmed a couple of winters ago and the bubble wrap helps to keep the greenhouse a tiny bit warmer, like a layer of insulation. 😃

Thank you Tina. Oil wise, just whatever we have at the time. We are both cyclists so we usually have oil for our bikes and that tends to get used for most things. 😀
I'm not particular to one brand or another.
@@eliandkate Excellent....thank you again. Keep those videos coming...love them ☘🙂
😀😀😀
Brilliant thank you ! I'm getting one of these
No more blunt tools
Thank you
Thank you for a great tutorial!!!
Glad it’s helpful Oscar
Hey, thanks for this. Its ages since I've sharpened anything. A clear , simple explanation, brilliant.
Ps...im Edinburgh alumni too ✂️📚
Hope it inspires you to get sharpening again Lizzie 😁
@@eliandkate it has. Mu lawnmower blade is coming off this week 🤓👍🏻
👏👏👏👏👏
Great information Eli. I've just bought the Sharpal using your link, along with a Crean Mate :-)
Oh thanks Tim. Now I'll be keen to hear about the Crean Mate. Looks interesting.
Super useful video Eli - I'm so guilty of not keeping my tools in good nick. Do you know how long that little tool lasts? Does it have a replaceable head?
Hey JB. I think sometimes we are all guilty of forgetting to take care of things :)
I’ve had a couple of those styles of sharpening tools and they’re about 3 years old now. Not about replacing bits on them to be honest as it’s not something I’ve ever thought about :)
SO easy this was great!!
Yay!!!! Sharp tools from now on
Thanks for sharing. I think a pocket sharpener is great.
It really is!
Great video learned so much thanks
I just start doing this thanks for the info
I have to admit that I had
to watch the video twice- the first viewing was listening to your accent for the entirety of the video. Then I had to watch it the second time to learn how to sharpen pruners without cutting my fingers off 🤣
😂😂😂😂 you be careful
Thanks, finally understood how to do it 😊
yay :D
Just ordered two of those tools, one for me and one for my best friend.
She will have to learn it, too!
Awwwww that was a thoughtful gift
I have watched other videos about sharpening garden tools, never really felt I got a whole story. However your video is totally fab, everything explained. It seems like a simple process, however I was going to use a file. Lucky I didn't.
A file would do the job, just would give you a much rougher finish
Very helpful. Thank you
👏👏👏👏
just come across your channel ,was trying to find out how to sharpen a rusty old dutch hoe that someone gave me , no idea which side to sharpen it ,managed to get some rust off it though maybe its beyond help i dont know , just subbed to you and looking forward to catching up on your videos .
Awesome to have you…
With a hoe you sharpen the outside edge… only one edge 😍
Good video...
where did you get your sharpener thing. What's is called etc. Thank you
If you nip into the video description there a link to the page I out all my garden tools etc on. You'll be able to get all the details there. 😀
Well done. What about when you have divots along the end? How do you get those out?
You’d have to regrind the blade, that’s a whole different thing
Love the videos !!
Hi there.. Thanks for this information. Can I ask what sis you clean all that black stuff off with at the beginning? Was it wire wool? Xxx
Yup wire wool or brillopad 😀
@@eliandkate thank u x
Very good video. Thank you.
Awww thanks. Glad it was useful 👍
@@eliandkate This is something I’ve ignored for years. I’m going to have a busy afternoon, now I have some motivation and slight know how!! 😄
You won't regret it. The joy of sharp secateurs 😀😀😀
@@eliandkate 🤪😃😃😃😃
I love this video. It’s exactly what I’m looking for to sharpen a pair of gardening shears I have. However, you didn’t tell us what the name of that tool is that you keep in your pocket to sharpen tools as you’re in the garden. What is it called? I want to buy one. Thank you.
Ha ha ha I so did AND it’s linked in the description 😁
Where can i buy the sharpening tool? Can’t see a link
Hey Jack
If you check the description you'll find a link to our favourite tools and gear. Any of the bits and bobs we talk about and in my wee kit store there.
Or have a search online ... I got mine on Amazon
Thanks for the vid. Do you sharpen things like spades with it too?
I don't personally because I dont have any of those types of spades but you, you can use this technique to sharpen spades, hoes, hedging shears etc.
I especially like to make sure my home is sharp for chopping at the weeds. It makes life so much easier.
And thank you so much for the coffee :)
I got a notification this morning. Now have to think of how best to put that towards a video.... (cue evil super villain type scheming laugh)
Thank you from Phoenix, AZ, USA a little bit of difficulty understanding that beautiful Scottish accent...
What sharpening tool do you use to sharpen the loppers?
same tool, I use that for everything
I’m going to sharpen my tools now, you made it so simple and easy, can I ask why you’ve got bubble wrap on the inside of your greenhouse?
Awesome Chris…. Glad the video helped.
The bubble wrap was because this video was filmed a couple of winters ago and the bubble wrap helps to keep the greenhouse a tiny bit warmer, like a layer of insulation. 😃
Hi I know you said the tool name is in video description, kind of new to this, so can you please tell me where is the video description located. Thanks
Hey Kim it’s under the video on the computer and mobile so you click to open it.
Not sure how it works with tvs
6:05 Australia! So I never know where to find the “description below” when details/products are linked???
I suppose it will depend on your device but wherever the video description is on the device you are using.
Or just do a search on Amazon.
Click on “more”, below the description/name of video.
