  • Nicolas Panes spoke of the Japanese late start in Far Eastern porcelain making and the development and collecting of polychrome Arita wares, notably Imari and Kakiemon at the Northern Ceramic Society Summer School 2023 on 24 August.
Full title and description: "Japanese Porcelain, the first hundred years. Although its potting tradition stretched back into pre-history, Japan was a late starter in far-eastern porcelain making. It required foreign potters to both find and perfect the use of the materials necessary for making hard paste porcelain. Unsurprising, then, that influences from other countries dominated the early porcelains manufactured in Japan. However, during the first hundred years, Japanese consumers were to refine their own taste so that ceramics, as well as Japanese art, were to develop a style of their own so distinctive that it later became the model for fashionable taste around the world."
This is an extract of the full 45 minute talk and I have abbreviated the title for RUclips.
Nick started collecting English ceramics in 1990 and his main interest was porcelain, initially the Regency period but subsequently concentrating on 18th century wares. Since 2011, he has been collecting Chinese and Japanese blue and white porcelain, whilst still researching English ceramics and continuing to lecture and publish on topics associated with English wares. He has served on the committee of the London Ceramic Circle at Morley College and as Treasurer of the English Ceramic Circle, where he was a Trustee for 10 years (and formerly Webmaster). In 2009 he published an important book on British Porcelain Sauceboats of the 18th Century and in 2016 he published a further volume entitled English Potter - American Patriot? Extracts from the extraordinary life of Richard Champion, which presented new evidence on this important figure in English ceramics and illustrated a fine selection of Bristol Porcelain.
