Jakartans always look curious to the foreigner? Not really, they only think: "Hey, what can I do for that foreigner, does he need help or something?" Or maybe they just thinking for: "Can I practice my *beginner level* english to that foreigner?". Don't be too worry when you in Jakarta, just say "Hi" to anyone that put their eyes on you, and have fun then.
For renting motorcycle issue, any who want to stay for a month or more and rent motorcycle, you probably better check Jalan Jaksa in Central Jakarta. It is a popular spot for backpackers and maybe most tourist friendly area in Jakarta.
@@alexandwhite Hope it can help you. In addition, you can try the Cipete area in South Jakarta. Many foreigners rent apartments and rooms there because it is close to several international schools and near the Kemang area. Also near the MRT station.
An Indonesian, living in Setiabudi (South Jakarta bordering central jakarta) In my area (embassies/offices) we see many foreigners, but mostly workers/employees So Yes, to be honest if I see a foreigner obviously a tourist, i tend to watch a bit just to see if the person would need any helps.

My pleasure Alex.. Keep going to make vlog for the whole Indonesia Even I was born here, only got chance visited several cities in Sumatera, Kalimantan, Bali and Java island of course (I live in Surabaya) on job duty. From Aceh to Papua there are 93 + 5 cities, 34 provinces, 17504 islands (5 big islands are; Java, Sumatera, Kalimanran/Borneo, Sulawesi/Celebes, Papua), land of 2.01 mio km2, 714 tribes (many culture), 1001 local languages, 271 million people (huge market potential), 2215 animal species (komodo dragons, orangutan, etc), 8000 plant spesies. Suppose one day I have chance visiting Raja Ampat, Papua. Have you been there? Have a nice Indonesia journey, brother..
Jakartan here. Nicely covered. Agree with everything you say.. The lack of sidewalk is exactly what I was thinking the first time I moved here in 1998. About the staring, don't worry, it's normal, especially in more rural areas when they see a 'bule'. I see you're goodlooking, so consider the stare as a compliment, seriously :). I saw a video from a foreigner who felt exactly the same, he even felt like celebrity (he wasn't in Jakarta though, but a small city in Sumatera). He got so many selfie requests from Indonesian, especially the young ones :)
i've been live in Jakarta a few years back, when u heard in the comment that u can live less than 500. my opinion is, yes u can. but that was not comfortable to live even for local, it's like backpacker way. for me, minimum u should prepare USD 750-1.000 to live "just ok/normal" in jakarta. and yes Jakarta have big problem with the polution and very hot. come to Bandung, in West Java. here far more cold rather than Jakarta or even another Province in Java. i think the best weather in Java is West java, specifically the South part of West Java Province such as Bandung.
For good and bad, Indonesians are openly curious people and like getting involved in someone else’s business. The good part, Indonesians are quick to accept anything/anyone new because of our curiosity and ready to help whenever you’re in trouble. The bad part, lacking awareness of privacy of others. Anyway, just think of it as receiving celebrities’ treatment!
Yess you are right, in Jakarta less a signboard, even the letters are to small if there are any signboard along the road. It was difficult for newest driver to drive along the road in Jalarta. I m missing Jakarta.
If there's one thing I'd like the world to know about Jakarta, is that our public transportation not that bad. We're improving, approaching our gap to Bangkok and KL. When the LRT lauch next year, it would be even better. Yes, the only thing I hope an immediate improve is the languange barrier and add more proper direction boards. Thank you for this video, man. I hope the word spreads.
I'm a american living in bogor, Indonesia..love this country..and let me tell you the stares I get are EVERYWHERE..I cannot exit my house without someone staring..it's everywhere I go, and the thing is..they don't break eye contact, even if I notice them! I went to a shop, I had 6 employees just following me around, staring and every single move I make! It's not easy man.
based on my expat teacher's experiences, local indonesian are attracted to foreigners especially if they are vlogging. its bcuz there are few expats vlogger or even local vlogger here. but i think, most of them are just curious with it or it is unusual for people to talk to camera.
When I first visited Jakarta in 1982, I was shocked by kids on d streets, selling items to stagnant vehicles in traffic, was kind of sad, wonder if they r still around. But in Mumbai, from 2009 to 2011, I was even more shocked, in d first year, I didn't have d budget to rent a car, n my mode of transportation was auto rickshaw, n when it stops at a traffic lights, those beggars, kids mostly, will start harassing u, n in one silly incident, two kids took my drinking water n umbrella, but there was a kid, selling things, took d umbrella back from d other kid n return it to me. Big cities in developing countries. In Malaysia, esp in d capital, KL, there r few areas with homeless n beggars, but u definitely won't see any kids selling stuff on d street in any city. Plenty of street food though. 😁🇲🇾😁
I love the way you deliver the topics! You're so good at explaining things :D People stared at you because they were curious I guess. We, Indonesian are easily attracted with tourist (or bule) lol 😂
Jakarta is open to all lifestyle possibilities. And Jakarta is one of the best places for newcomers to try their luck in doing business. That is very well known to foreign businessmen, especially Chinese people. Jakartans love new things. Open your food stall or restaurant. Bring your "halal" traditional food, star food of your lovely country here. Make it in spicy here. Indonesian, love spicy food. Or open a fashionable traditional clothes store, typical of your country, then the queue will occur soon. My suggestion is to open it in South Jakarta. I have several times started a business in South Jakarta. It's relatively straightforward. And an advantage if you are a "foreigner" who is friendly, likes to mingle, joke, laugh. You will very easily live and doing business in Jakarta. A city of a million jokes and possibilities. The warmth of family and laughter are the hallmarks of native Jakarta residents. Don't get too serious about enjoying Jakarta. Be relaxed. Enjoy all the experiences. That's the way to enjoy Jakarta. Money is not the main thing for those who want to live in Jakarta. But his attitude and ability to interact warmly with the peoples. The more familiar you are with the local people, you will get many benefits. Don't live in tall buildings. Stay in a boarding house in the middle of the Jakarta village to understand Jakarta better. You can touch Jakarta's upper social class when you have fame, achievement, or acquaintance who brings you there. "Bule" or Westerners have a long history in Indonesia, especially Jakarta. They used to be high-class citizens here. So the subconscious formation of most Indonesians thinks they have an interesting charm. It was considered that all foreigners were rich and / or could make life comfortable as the upper class in colonial era Indonesian society. The desire to be close to the "upper class" (Bule) exacerbated also by the formation of the main media, electronic cinema (sinetron) which depicted that if you mary with foreign couple specially western, you ll ve mixed Indonesian descendants who ll be more good loking; handsome, beautiful. It ll make your childs could be success in the future. So when a stranger walks by there is some kind of psychological attraction that makes us want to at least see and / or say hello. Just saying hi and then a good response is enough to make most of us happy. We have a Capital City which has the potential to become one of the best Capital Cities in the World because of our egalitarian (open for new comers) attitude. We love the arrival of strangers. As long as they are kind, friendly, polite, ethical, obeying rules and of course not easily offended. "Selamat Datang di Jakarta."
5:30 Jakarta has fewer foreign tourists coming than other cities in Southeast Asia such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and even Bali though. So, that already explains why people are amazed to strangers
Congratulations! I hope you'll stay more in Jakarta someday. All you have to do is to learn Bahasa Indonesia. Once you've get used to it, you could be an Indonesian, and you can explore entire Indonesia! Tetap Semangat! (It means, Keep up your Spirit!)
I think your perception is right about why people are looking at you in Jakarta. Jakarta is very different than Bali, we don't have that much tourists at all and foreigners who live here are not really seen out and about on the street. So a caucasian person would 'stand out' in the crowd here and naturally people will look. People might also see you like you are some kind of celebrity lol. Anyway, this is simply because people here in Jakarta aren't as accustomed to seeing foreign people as the people in Bali where it's a part of their day to days.
How do I move to Jakarta when I never moved there before? I have no idea how the legalities work. I've read that there are permits that need to be renewed. How difficult are they to renew? I also need to bring my cat, but I heard that it has to be in a government quarantine facility for 2 weeks??
Hi alex, if you have time, stay in jkt on 1st day of lebaran, May 13th. You may seen empty jkt main road (sudirman street) and feel clean air in the morning.
In that area you stayed, there should be another mall, called mall ciputra, unless it's already closed permanently or something. Its been a while since my last time in jakarta.
Yeah as i told u b4, u should go to 1000 islands ... And there is also kind of disneyland in jakarta .. Mostly Jakarta give u culinary experience and seafood is 1 of the best ... Near of jakarta, u can find a great zoo in Puncak, and it has a nice air ..... Why people always looking at u, it coz they attracted to the camera ... They loved to be 1 of the people that in any video ... And especially u re a foreigner, which is very rarely to see .. Becoz of that, they re ready to help u if u get some difficulties .. I think most people in Jakarta will help u if u r lost ...
the traffic wasn't very bad because not all offices are open or at least partially oven. the mobility is still not at maximum capacity, some people would avoid going to the mall for unnecessary things
Just watched this. I'm originally from Indonesia but live in the US now. Jakarta residents usually only see foreigners as business people , not as tourists. So they rarely interact with foreigners in Jakarta. The first time my husband came with me to Jakarta, almost everyone would just start calling him "Hey mister! Mister!". It's pretty amusing 🤣 Plus, he's 6' so he's towered over everyone & easy to spot. Last time my husband & I went to Jakarta, we stayed at B Fashion Hotel right behind Taman Anggrek Mall since it's only 10 minutes from where my family lives. I agree about English speaking residents being very rare there. Although, I expect it'd be more common now since schools start teaching English from kindergarten. Back when I was still in school, we didn't start until middle school. 1 other thing, even though public transportation is very good & easy to find, I can't deal with the traffic anymore. And, oh yeah... the heat! Can't deal with that anymore 😁 What I miss the most about Jakarta is THE MALLS & THE FOOD! Can't wait to go back next year!
Thank you for sharing your experiences in Jakarta, I hope you like the beauty of the city of Jakarta, with its various uniqueness, you will always miss coming back to Jakarta.👍👍👌
Expats are very common in several business districts, high end areas & places of interest. But they are extremely rare in most of Jakarta neighborhoods, that's why you got much more attention in some places than the others. If you walk around in Central or South Jakarta the folks will definitely give you less attention because most expats are concentrated there, hence the friendlier pedestrian facilities that you mentioned.
It might be beocz you were vlogging in the street, i mean that is not common in jakarta, or any other parts of indonesia, even for a local, usually only the local celebrities doin it and PLUS you are a foreigner, of course. About the sidewalk, yes indonesia's big cities is not pedestrian friendly. The urban planning did not plan it from the beginning, and what always happens in jakarta is : the government is trying to make the street wider and wider becoz of the traffic and uplanned development, so the pedestrian walk is becoming smaller, or sometimes they cut off the greeneries area. The sudirman and thamrin street were used to be has a green path in each one way direction, you are still be able to see the "mark".
Thanks for visiting Jakarta. Jakarta is so dense with buildings and people. I am proud and thankful for you giving us very positive and friendly comments. However, any other things did you find that make you uncomfortable during your visit ? Other than traffic ^_^
Yes it's very hot most of the time and yes there is pretty much no sidewalks. If there is a sidewalk they have street food on them. It's fun and different in indonesia. I'm staying here for 5 months. I'm here so far for 2 months and a half so far. Love watching your videos keep it up. It helps me find things to tell my wife to do. She's from indonesia so she's my translator lol

You're right about that., so more local people pay attention to tourists (from other countries) when you go to the cities in INA (in positive ways of course) Especially when you visit to the area where's less Int'l tourists. As you mentioned that it doesn't happen in Bali or other tourist destination area such as Yogyakarta, Surabaya or Bandung !!! so just keep smiling when you attract local people while visiting there :) 😀👍😁

How much it takes in time to learn Bahasa Indonesia?

If you stay with a full local family, it will takes a month only, of course it also depend on your enthusiasism & activatism.
For renting motorcycle issue, any who want to stay for a month or more and rent motorcycle, you probably better check Jalan Jaksa in Central Jakarta. It is a popular spot for backpackers and maybe most tourist friendly area in Jakarta.
oh interesting i didn't know about that. Will have to check out next time i'm there! thanks Chiba
@@alexandwhite Hope it can help you. In addition, you can try the Cipete area in South Jakarta. Many foreigners rent apartments and rooms there because it is close to several international schools and near the Kemang area. Also near the MRT station.
for the stares, maybe its because unusual foreigner walking around in that area. sometimes if something off it might attract eyes right?
yeah could be, thanks for responding llama! 🙌🏻
Very beautiful metropolitan city!
Never been so fast. But here i am. I hope you're enjoying your stay in Indonesia
Haha so quick!! Thanks for watching Faricha! Loving it in Indonesia so far 😃🙌🏼
An Indonesian, living in Setiabudi (South Jakarta bordering central jakarta)
In my area (embassies/offices) we see many foreigners, but mostly workers/employees
So Yes, to be honest if I see a foreigner obviously a tourist, i tend to watch a bit just to see if the person would need any helps.
This guy is legendary.
So are you!
Yes so handsome
Pemain mobilegen ya..? 😅
@@latifdani9677 yeah maybe he's mobile lagend player 😊

Loved Indonesia, awesome people, amazing natural beauty. Love & respect from Bangladesh
Starring you because of your camera on while vloging. Thats it, theres not to much foreigner because "backpacker" avoid Jakarta as hard as they can lol (exc for airport transit)
it actually happened to me many times when i wasn't vlogging
My pleasure Alex..
Keep going to make vlog for the whole Indonesia
Even I was born here, only got chance visited several cities in Sumatera, Kalimantan, Bali and Java island of course (I live in Surabaya) on job duty.
Awesome a new video, can't wait to watch it
Thanks man! 😄🙌🏼
i recommend you to try the highest ferris wheel in indonesia.. the place is in aeon mall cakung ..
oh thats something new i haven't heard of! thanks Deni!
@@alexandwhite you're welcome 😁
Jakartan here. Nicely covered. Agree with everything you say.. The lack of sidewalk is exactly what I was thinking the first time I moved here in 1998. About the staring, don't worry, it's normal, especially in more rural areas when they see a 'bule'. I see you're goodlooking, so consider the stare as a compliment, seriously :). I saw a video from a foreigner who felt exactly the same, he even felt like celebrity (he wasn't in Jakarta though, but a small city in Sumatera). He got so many selfie requests from Indonesian, especially the young ones :)
haha thats awesome! thanks so much for answering and responding Sugiri! 😁🙌🏻🇮🇩
The local thought that you,re a celeb doing a vlog, that's why they staring at you.....just gave them a smile😁
i've been live in Jakarta a few years back, when u heard in the comment that u can live less than 500. my opinion is, yes u can. but that was not comfortable to live even for local, it's like backpacker way. for me, minimum u should prepare USD 750-1.000 to live "just ok/normal" in jakarta. and yes Jakarta have big problem with the polution and very hot.
come to Bandung, in West Java. here far more cold rather than Jakarta or even another Province in Java. i think the best weather in Java is West java, specifically the South part of West Java Province such as Bandung.
yes agreed it wouldn't be very comfortable for me which is why i chose to do $1,000 per month thanks for watching Bim!
Your video is getting better and better! Keep it up🔥
Thanks so much!! Appreciate it 😃
ur videos very very help me to learn English. Your words are very easy to understand. Thank you by the way
i'm glad!! Thanks so much for watching Schehani 😁🙌🏻
1:33 i actually saw that irl cuz i went to jkt cilegon to jkt it was amazing i loved it
For good and bad, Indonesians are openly curious people and like getting involved in someone else’s business.
I like the way you describe Jakarta, Jakarta is much better now and will be better and better again.
One of my favorite cities to be in 👏🏼
Hiya. Always informative. Great content. Thank you for sharing. Have a great week. Safe travels.
Thanks so much for always watching Nicky!! 😃🙌🏼
Its because indonesian people have much love....Indonesian care and a good intentions.....
Indonesia ramah Dan baik......
Thanks for watching Teguh!! Yeah the transportation is getting very good
I'm a american living in bogor, Indonesia..love this country..and let me tell you the stares I get are EVERYWHERE..I cannot exit my house without someone staring..it's everywhere I go, and the thing is..they don't break eye contact, even if I notice them! I went to a shop, I had 6 employees just following me around, staring and every single move I make! It's not easy man.
Yo got any advice on how to move there? I'm talking to this girl over there and want to visit her and maybe move one day.
based on my expat teacher's experiences, local indonesian are attracted to foreigners especially if they are vlogging. its bcuz there are few expats vlogger or even local vlogger here. but i think, most of them are just curious with it or it is unusual for people to talk to camera.
Agree.
Agree most indonesian shy monolog with camera. When they see someone monolog with a camera they will pay attentin with you.
-east jakarta
-north jakarta
-central jakarta
-west jakarta
-South jakarta
And thousand islands
thousand island is part of north Jakarta district
Thanks for all your videos in Jakarta.
You're so good at explaining things :D
People stared at you because they were curious I guess. We, Indonesian are easily attracted with tourist (or bule) lol 😂
haha awesome thanks for answering that Sasha! Appreciate you watching 😁🙌🏻
"Selamat Datang di Jakarta."
the first time I came to this channel I immediately liked it. watching and learning English at the same time. Thank you.
It seems your number of viewers increased sharply when you started uploading videos about Indonesia
5:30 Jakarta has fewer foreign tourists coming than other cities in Southeast Asia such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and even Bali though. So, that already explains why people are amazed to strangers
You better rent a room near karet pedurenan, karet or near perbanas university around kuningan district are more afordable
Correct north and west.. not so many side walk. Sad i am living in north but love to hang out in south
Congratulations! I hope you'll stay more in Jakarta someday. All you have to do is to learn Bahasa Indonesia. Once you've get used to it, you could be an Indonesian, and you can explore entire Indonesia! Tetap Semangat! (It means, Keep up your Spirit!)
haha yes so true! I'm learning the basics still
I think your perception is right about why people are looking at you in Jakarta.
Thanks for this video.
of course! Thanks for watching Yasin! 😁🙌🏻

How do I move to Jakarta when I never moved there before?
I have no idea how the legalities work.
I've read that there are permits that need to be renewed. How difficult are they to renew? I also need to bring my cat, but I heard that it has to be in a government quarantine facility for 2 weeks??
animals are hard, visas are not if you get an agent
You stayed right next to where i was on my first visit in Jakarta
haha thats awesome!
@@alexandwhite yeah i was in next apartment block up opposite Central Park in Madison Park Magnolia tower
I think most people in Jakarta will help u if u r lost ...
the staring actually happened a lot when i wasn't vlogging haha
the traffic wasn't very bad because not all offices are open or at least partially oven. the mobility is still not at maximum capacity, some people would avoid going to the mall for unnecessary things
Jakarta seems interesting... Might go there sometime
And, oh yeah... the heat! Can't deal with that anymore 😁
What I miss the most about Jakarta is THE MALLS & THE FOOD!
AS an Indonesian I think jakarta and other cities in Indonesian is the best So far
Miss Jakarta so bad, I was born, grew up in Jakarta, now I live in California.
The sudirman and thamrin street were used to be has a green path in each one way direction, you are still be able to see the "mark".
it actually happened many times as well when i wasn't vlogging just exploring the city on my own. Thanks for answering Darfan!
Great video brother... youre Information so much use to any foreigner to come to Jakarta.👍
of course thanks for watching Nino! 😁

What would u consider d best experience for u in Jakarta, street food, mall etc?
Even as Indonesian When i was holding my Camera Vlogging in the street automatically people will see you, cause they know they will be on RUclips.
You should visit 1000 island specially macan island its best place n resort for a couple
For the stares, perhaps the people who were looking you were also tourist from different region. It is rare to see foreigner in some regions

Interesting choice on living in west jakarta, next time try to live in kemang/pondok indah/ senopati / scbd (south jakarta) its totally diff atmosphere
You're right about that., so more local people pay attention to tourists (from other countries) when you go to the cities in INA (in positive ways of course)
Especially when you visit to the area where's less Int'l tourists. As you mentioned that it doesn't happen in Bali or other tourist destination area
such as Yogyakarta, Surabaya or Bandung !!! so just keep smiling when you attract local people while visiting there :) 😀👍😁
