  • This video is about what it is really like living as a black person in Indonesia specifically a black African in Indonesia. Before moving to Indonesia, I could not find so much information on black expats living in Indonesia, hence my decision to make this video.
This is in no way a generalization on what all black people’s experiences are in Indonesia, however, this is my personal experience as a black African when I lived in Indonesia. I hope this video gives you a bit of insight. Enjoy!

You're starred because you're different. It's not racism at all, don't worry. It's just curiosity. I am from Jakarta. I experienced the same thing when visiting eastern Indonesia where the people are black. They starred at me and asked me questions:)

true, being starred at doesn't always mean racism, as a brown skinned guy myself i also get the looks/starred at when i was travelling in south korea because i simply look different. they just take a look for a couple of seconds and then continue their own business..👍

let me clarify some of the points:
    1. As some people said here, they're not staring at you because of your skin color, especially outside of Jakarta. They're staring at you because it's uncommon for them. If you went to the Sumatra, Sulawesi, or Kalimantan islands, you'll get stared at even more frequently, as it's very rare for a foreigner to come to the islands.
    2. Regarding the immigration treatment, it's common for those who have never visited Indonesia, or any other SE Asia nation to get a double or triple check. Especially if your passport is from conflict-prone countries or countries (mostly in Africa and South America) that are notoriously well-known for human trafficking and drug trades. the extra check is necessary to ensure that you did not involve in any of the things I mentioned, or you're not seeking asylum.
    3. About the airport taxi, well, even for us, native Indonesians, we will NEVER recommend you those taxis, as they'll overcharge you to the max. They don't want to call you up maybe because they treated you similar to native east Indonesian, such as from Kupang, Maluku, or Papua. Additionally, you're not "that black" as some native Javanese have the same skin tone as yours. So yes, they may treat you as a native.
    4. About the saloons, yes. Most of the time, you can't get special treatment for your hair, as most saloons serve the local's basic needs. So, if you want to get special treatment, you can go to international barbershops in malls. Otherwise, no special treatment.
    5. About palm oil, I don't know what did you mean by diluted. If you bought palm oil in most of the supermarkets, they're as clear as other palm oil products. But, if you meant the palm oil used by street food vendors, well yes, they're diluted as the oil is reused for 3 to 4 times cooking. Sunflower oil is way too expensive for Indonesians.

    • @gaming1zanagi-1999.

Here's a thing,in my experience being in Indonesia means you will be in a part of highly social community. Meaning everyone in one community is very social on daily basis that it's kind of regular days, which means if there's something new or there's someone new on their neighborhood it's automatically piqued their curiosity. They will approach you friendly to get to know you better and to make you adapted to the neighborhood faster i think everybody does. I mean when i go to every corner of indonesia i got that first local approach. Well they just basically friendly in nature. It doesn't have anything to do with race, Indonesia has the most diverse race and culture in the world anyway. Don't compare them to america, black is nothing new in Indonesia. Try to spend more time with local and converse you will know the magic of indonesia.well they don't speak english so you might need to learn their bahasa. They don't judge you based on identity but as individual if you're a good person then they would welcome you like a family lightning fast. respect their culture then Indonesia is a heaven on earth.

    - Wanna know if they can help you

    - Wanna some interaction
Indonesia really feel proud if they can speak or have interaction with foreigner. But some of them really shy and don't know english. That's why they just stare at you

I live in Indonesia and people with black skin color are not treated as well as lighter-skinned people. The main reason for this is that in Indonesia, lighter skin means pure and clean. Whitening products here are very popular. A lighter-skinned woman(not sure about males) is the beauty standard here.
But that’s not really the ONLY reason. I’m a chinese Indonesian minority, and whenever I go out walking on the streets, people just literally stare at me. In the past, I’ve even been called racist words like “Cina” meaning “China” by the locals. Bitch, I live here since birth, I’m Indonesian. So Indonesians aren’t really used to see a different color or shade of brown, and you being a darker shade and I’m being a lighter shade gives us weird stares. However nowadays, this is only true in countrysides and uneducated people AND nowadays it’s getting a lot better. I can eat in a “warung” without people staring at me like I’m an exotic animal.

I’ve seen some Indonesians in my campus who don’t really speak English get along with some Africans too but not as close as me and my African friends. In my opinion, I guess it comes back to being comfortable among individuals, and the major factor is having the ability to fluently speak one language in common where the majority of Indonesians lack in, not to say I have a better language skill than other Indonesians as I’m still learning English. 😂

Hi babe. Indonesian here. Jakartan to be exact. First of all, i wanna say im so sorry for all the bad experiences you had to deal with here. But i just wanna touch on some things. About the stares, im not sure where you been to, but most indonesians, especially jakartans (who are v open minded), are used to black people bc we literally have black brothers and sisters from Papua. They're black indonesian, like black-black. So, you prolly just happenned to interact with people from rural areas, who were also visitors, who had never met or interacted with Papuans before. Second thing, about the airport thingy, no worry babe cause Indonesians too sometimes, from certain areas outside jakarta, experienced such discrimination. Ignorant people globally exist. They tend to judge based on the way you look, dress, etc. If you looked rich or 'promising' they'd automatically prioritized you. Overall, hope you have a great time despite all the annoyance you've experienced here ❤️

not that Indonesians sometimes can be racist, but because we Indonesians are pretty laid back when it comes to such statements. We most just shrug our shoulders whenever someone makes such remarks or making playful teasing, unlike the overly sensitive Americans who tie everything to racism and everything is all about your feelings

As a typical white guy i got stared at everywhere i went. ALL foreigners get started at just because we're a curiosity. They don't consider it rude, just like they don't consider asking lots of questions to be rude, just like you explained. It was never a negative thing, though. Honestly i felt like a celebrity most of the time. 😂
As far as the friendliness goes, you can literally ask anyone for help with anything and they are usually happy to help as much as they can. To them the entire country is their home and you are a welcome guest.
I miss it very much. I can't wait to go back next year.

@@ramtransportllc6818 well every nation have their own culturre and the way of thinking. Maybe in us rude, but here is only just curious not underestimate. In Us maybe black can be treated differently, but here people stare at you because you"re different in appeareance, but the benefit is, because you're different you must be from far away country, then they will help you and always open for any favor you need. there some foreigners like caucasians and african here and they are treated equally , we are friendly and helpfull to them all, even as a stranger. And there are also foreigners who run out of money and becomes homeless, once people find foreigners become homeless here (even one ever found became lost his mind/lunatic), people will make it viral, and many wants to help you until you can get hel from immigrations. Also once a foreigner got sick all alone, she doesn't know anyone here as she was really an introvert, but a local Mom notice that she always showed up in front of her every morning to buy something but in several days The local Mom did not she her (the foreigner), she then rushed to her apartment and checked on her if she's okay ,and she also brought foods when she came, after The Mom found out She was sick, she everyday brought her food and medicine without wanting to be paid. And so many stories of foreigners are being helped and taken care by locals immediately on their hard times. So there is also positive and negative. So why feel bothered for being stared of curiousity when you get anything you need when you are in danger here?

ABOUT THE TAXI DRIVER(s), I can explain some of reasons why they avoided foreigners to hoop in, based on my own experience, when I was still 15(?) back then. The driver asked me to help him out facing a foreigner passenger just to question where did he want to go bcs the driver can't speak English at all (I can tell most of Indonesians still not good in English whether speaking nor worst, understanding what the language means). So maybe some public transport drivers indeed avoid foreigners but NOT BCS OF RACISM. Our stares were also not RACISM but CURIOSITY. Indonesians are friendly but also CURIOUS about unusual things to them. Being black is normal here since our own people mostly black.

Hi! Indonesian here. I agree on the limited access to curly/kinky hair products! I have wavy hair (2C/2B), and I've spent most of my life straightening my hair to fit in the beauty standard here and I ended up damaging my hair. Now I'm growing my natural hair and repairing it from the heat and chemical damage. But haircare products are quite pricey and most of them are designed for straight hair. Even some hair salons can't handle wavy hair (some salons don't even have diffuser tf?!). Glad that now there are online stores that sell bonnets and silk pillowcases... But still I hope my country will be more educated about different hair textures. Love your video❤️

I am Indonesian and look nothing like Chinese but when I was studying in a university in France, at least 2 fellow students greeted me with Ni hao. They're black. In a freaking university... I had to shout 'I'm Indonesian not Chinese.' Why shout, you might ask. It was because they didn't even ask me properly. They shouted this greeting from the stairs or while passing by me. So basically even someone who's supposed to be educated enough to not throw assumption regarding other people just by their physical appearance still do ignorant stuff like that.
People in general tend to react when they see someone who's not similar to them or not common in their area. Indonesians are originally friendly, helpful, and curious to the point of nosy. We don't see lots of foreigners in Indonesia. So you have dark skin, some Indonesians have dark skin too. But then you probably speak English or other language, people get curious. People want to know where you're from, why you come to Indonesia, and more. They'll probably end up asking pictures of you just so they can brag about it to their friends about meeting foreigners. That's basically how rare it is for us to see foreigners. And another thing I learned from my time abroad ... In Indonesia, staring is not even a taboo. 😂😂😂 There's no ethic rule on that for us in general. I know a friend of mine visited me in France and she stared for long at people on the bus we were on, I had to nudge her and tell her that it's inappropriate in France. So yeah... Hope your experience doesn't deter you from coming back years to come.

Indonesia is a country that everyone is have the same rank like no matter you are black or white and else, we actually give the same reaction. Because Indonesia was created by unity from different island, when we getting colonized by the Dutch. Since the Dutch colonize us we becoming one country to fight them back. By the way if you go to the east side of Indonesia there is big possibility, to meet black people cause the majority of east of Indonesia like Papua and NTT is black. So you just have to live longer in Indonesia to understand us how many cultures we have and tradition and how we think and more. about the taxi, you actually can take a taxi queue like bluebird or even grab that are managed by their own staff (who should be able to speak english). you'd get queue number so you shouldnt get refused by drivers. theyre a bit pricier but im sure it worth. although in that sense, the drivers themseves shouldnt even work at the airport if they wont take foreigners smh. even my half malay cousin was troubled with "unofficial" taxis

I thinks theres misunderstanding here. Its a common things for indonesian ppl to stare at foreigners because of curiousity. But i’m sorry if its makes u uncomfortable, some people just can’t ignore a foreign. I wish indonesian people would be more respectful to foreigners.

ugh taxi drivers. they are known to be problematic (scams, expensive, rude, etc). we Indonesians dont like them too, lol. we dont use them anymore. instead, we use a transportation online app called gojek, the indonesian app or grab, from singapore. the driver will pick you up wherever you are. they are cheaper and easier too. they arent known to be rude or problematic like taxi drivers, even to locals. the transportation app is the number one tip before you go to indonesia.

My sister,I Looove your personality, you will do well in any country your feet lands on. because your a realist and you understand people. The human family is interconnected, and there's lots of similarities between use.so when we're traveling that's the key to look for.most people lacks cultural education.they do not have a passport and never travel outside their country, do not have friends outside their ethnicity. so on our part it well take patients .now if someone is rude or has poor boundaries then we need to set them straight. But to travel and experience each other's cultures is the best gift we can give to yourselves and others.thank you for your channel.

Hi, Indonesian here. I'm not here to defend any racism you may have encountered before, racism happens everywhere. But I'd like to point out a few things that could be taken to consideration:
    1. Genuine curiosity towards other cultures
Tourists/foreigners aren't so rare, but whenever the locals spot some, they'll find their eyes drawn into them. Be it out of curiosity (unique appearances, foreign languages, etc) or amazement (bc tourists are associated with rich people who can afford to fly across the world to come here). If you see someone new in your workplace, wouldn't your eyes be drawn to them too? If you find the staring uncomfortable, that's totally understandable. But now you know better to just brush it off than to think negatively about it.
    2. Outdated opinion on skin color
The belief that lighter skin are better/more attractive. It happens amongst Asian countries unfortunately and we are not an exception. However, only few members of the population think that, most won't even care about skin color as long as you are kind and respectful. Modern Indonesia thinks all kinds of skin colors are beautiful, so if you feel like you were treated otherwise it might be because of that outdated belief or it's just how they treat people in general regardless of ethnicity etc. You just need to find the right crowd.
    3. "People fear what they don't know"
The saying goes for humanity in general. If someone you talk to doesn't understand English or the language you speak at all, frustration is expected and it resulted in them acting rude. For example, I had a personal experience with the Indians I met during my study trip in Malaysia. I spoke none of the language they know and I was trying to make an order, the Indian guy on the register just looked so done with the language barrier that he just spelled out the recommended menu to me (in a rather rude "just choose one and be done with it" manner, I might add). I'm sure not every Indians are like that, but it's easier to take in when you understand where they're coming from.
This is just me sharing the perspective of a local, I hope this could clarify any doubts or misunderstandings you might find in the future ^^

The staring is just because you're a foreigner they do it to all foreigners. I'd like to add what I noticed studying in Indonesia. The African students got special treatment and they were looked after well. A lot better than the European students. Being British it didn't feel like many were welcoming towards me in the university but I found out most were too nervous to talk to me.

We indonesians and africans are both being colonized exploited and slaved by western nations Portuguese spanish british dutch we re all once colonized and enslaved us indonesians. That is where you get your special treatment at the university most probably.

Hi there, this is first time viewing your channel. You have a new sub. I'm from The States, and have been living in Bali for 12 years. I should also add that I have Indonesian mixed ancestry, so my experience wasn't with me being treated as a foreigner. However, there was a not so subtle mistreatment within the culture. For example: I would go to a cafe with another expat friends, and only my friends would get their water glasses refilled. Apparently, this was a common thing to happen within the culture. Yes, the owner was informed about it. Sadly, only when prompted by the owner did the behavior improve. I guess this would be considered a very minor thing.
