On this edition of the ArsenalVision Podcast, Elliot is joined by Clive fresh off his holiday and ready to go. The pod starts with some discussion of the new “deadline day” related to PSR compliance, and whether the real transfer window is now poised to kick off. After that there’s a quick casual chat about comings and goings in the academy and the goal of the academy generally. Next there’s a fun hypothetical about players we’d buy from our rivals. That leads to a final section about what’s wrong with England at the Euros and how to fix it with Switzerland up next and what it means for Saka and Rice. All that and more on this edition of the ArsenalVision Podcast. #arsenal

I like Clive's analysis, I will say it differently on the midfield. We learned last season Rice is a Left 8 by default because he is an all action midfielder and although he can play the 6 it is best to play him as an 8. Put our all action super hero in a position to dominate in more areas of the pitch as a vertical shuttler means he will cover more grass. We also learned that we lacked progression until Jorginho played with Declan. This was also when we did not have Zinchenko at left back. The progression needs to come from somewhere and players have roles; Arteta decides those roles and who is more responsible for progression based on how he sets it up. In this phase he noticed they lacked progression and that is why he put in Jorginho. Clive has delivered this information with excellent analysis for months as we all know. So with all of that said, I do not know that we specifically need someone to the right of the vertical line that cuts the field in half down the middle: Odegaard is the guy there. With Partey leaving and Jorginho aging, if Arteta has determined Declan is the left 8 and we want to bring in a player that is a now player who defaults to starting 11 it needs to be the 6 so Jorginho is a situational player given his age. If Rice needs to be the 6 as the market dictates I believe we need a ball progression master in the left 8 that covers every blade of grass. Remember when Declan played 6 to start? We lacked ball progression. Rice can develop and Havertz is not a progressor either so it is a two pronged problem that needs answering, but that is why I say we need a rhythm progressor as the left 8 IF Rice is our 6 or we will lack ball progression IMHOP. It depends on what is available in the market as I believe a world class 6 or a specifically profiled 8 is hard to find perhaps. I have always set up my teams with two outfield players in mind as the "most important roles" based on how I play (relate that to this pod rating 3 most important Arsenal players as (Saka, Odegaard, and Saliba): I want the #6 and the #9 to be the best players on the pitch. That is over simplified, but I believe we need to go out and get the best #6 possible and I want that #6 to be able to blow up plays, but PRIMARILY I want that #6 to be a regista in the system we play.

Firstly Todd - thanks for such a thoughtful reply.
On Rice I do agree we need that guy to his right shoulder. Sometimes behind and sometimes next to him as a double 6 when we go off the ball. I see the pitch in my head as 2 circles one inside the other and a line down the middle - The outer circle ⭕️ is your exterior. For me that’s your speed and they give you direction offensively by their attributes and defensively the protect the queen (our goal) the interior you drop onto from the exterior and the attributes change. Neat technique based mind readers. In possession we need that guy that plays like Partey (younger version) as he is superb at rhythm setting and players trust his pass so they move ahead of time.
Bruno G is the one mate….he has a bit of Partey and Rice in his game. He is combative and he transmits the energy of total commitment and passion Arteta talks about.
Newcastle fans say he is a better 6/8 rather than 8/6 - at his age I think he is ready to run a CL level team.
He runs Brazil now with Joao Gomez doing the Rice combative tackling role next to him.
Anyway thanks again for taking the time to reply.
      Clive

@@clivepalmer3545 I like it Clive! Thanks for all you do, I have learned a lot from you and enjoy how you see the game. I like the idea of Bruno for sure. I wonder if we can get him. I do think getting the 6 first (who can be an 8 like you say) is the most important player to get. I wonder if there is also a striker that can be brought in, but with Jesus coming back into things I see more depth up front than in midfield. I think we need both, but I qualify it this way knowing a Bruno would cost 100mil just like an Isaac would, for example. If we need to prioritize I wonder what Arteta and Edu will do? Time will tell.

    Ødegaard isn't.

I'm so shocked no one mentioned toney impact and how Southgate threw him on with a min to go he literally saved him for now but I saw big Sam literally simplify the whole game how he would use toney

Hi Elliot I'm old enough to remember England 66 and the brilliance of Sir Alf Ramsey that he had the balls to play the team that he wanted not players that Southgate seemed too apeice the English journalists and he leaves Ben White out of the team as one of the best rb in the league

I would go with Odegaard Saka Saliba for sure. Rice limitations if he doesn't evolve could mean moving beyond him. He looks far from one of best midfielders at Euros. His strengths are there but his lack of progressive passing made us blunt first part last season and although he did well further forward i would take Xhaka back if you could take 5 years off him. He was excellent for Switzerland again. Odegaard is my favourite but will he be able to dance like tgat at 32? He does have intelligence to evolve though. Saliba has grown into French shirt already. L8ve to see him with us for years

Clive is so right about the mess Southgate is making, it's time to piss someone off.
He needs to ask himself how Leicester won the league with players that in most cases would not get in any of the supposed big teams? Because they may not have had the best players but they had a good team. The 11 best players don't necessarily make the best team

Can someone ask Clive where he got this idea that players like ESR and co can be moved late? What is this even based on? It's seems like he's just made this up in his head or based it solely on balogun who actually had interest from a team where he flourished in the same league

      Hey mate.
If you study a window what tends to happen at all levels are you get your main targets in first - the big investments as they are your franchise level have an impact to your strategy type players. Then you focus on market opportunities that maybe further down your list. I would say our hale Enders would fall into the latter category hence I think they will go later in the window. The EPL pay a lot so why take on contracts earlier than you have to lower down the league of abroad. Wait…have agreements in place then execute
      Hope that clarifies 👍🏾👍🏾
