- When a new wood splitter rolls along into the wood yard, I can't help but feel like things are about to change. Whether the change is for the better or not will be seen today as I give you a run-down on this brand new Eastonmade Ultra wood splitter. This wood splitter is the fastest hydraulic wood splitter on the market today and rivals the cycle time of previously untouched kinetic wood splitters. Best thing about it is it's hydraulic so way less moving parts. Now before I get ahead of myself, lets see whether the hype surrounding this wood splitter is actually true. A proper shake down is in order and that's just what we'll do. Glad you're all here for the first look and splitting of this wood splitter. Should be a good one!

Hope it makes firewood fun!!! Appreciate the support
It’s one heck of a splitter!
I liked when you said it would probably outlast you if you take care of it.
Haha I wasn’t joking either
Another great real world test, thanks Sandy. I have always been skeptical of the 4 way wedge, and you proved me right. It is really only good in a picture perfect world. I feel like it gave inconsistent splits in size etc. That being said I am on the Easton made wood splitter website, very impressed with the product, just as a personal preference i would stick to a single wedge. I look forward to future videos where you perfect your technique. Change my mind on the four way.
Great content as usual sandy! I think I'm just as excited as you whenever you get a new piece of equipment! Glad to see you always buy top of the line too! Looking forward to seeing you put that to the test as winter approaches, thanks for sharing and keep up the great work!!
Tim F.
Hey Tim! Glad to have ya along
I've only ever done this twice on my friends small holding in South Wales, UK, loved being outside helping a friend. We've both taught manual handling in past lives and were initially throwing the split wood in the same way you did. Wish I'd known about the tool used to pick up the logs. Having stopped for a piece of cake and a cup of tea, why wouldn't we, we're Brits, we decided to move the splitter next to the cage rather than in line with the rear of it. The throwing is in a straight motion rather than twisting our backs whilst throwing. Where are we going to get our 'Sawing with Sandy' hit if you get hurt. Gotta love the outdoors, keep it going Sandy, always look forward to the next episode!!
Thanks Aaron! Yeah that splitter sure is one great tool. Same with that pickaroon. I wouldn't want to live without it anymore.
Hey Sandy! Forgot to drop a comment here! Wow what a machine, when time comes for me I think I’ll pick one up as well! Great to see companies out there that still build good heavy and reliable equipment! Thanks for this playlist Sandy! Cheers!
Cheers!
Good for you!! Having the right equipment always makes your life easier. Great piece of equipment.
Thanks Jack. Huge upgrade for me
Heck yeh- it's good seeing people get to use and enjoy so many great pieces of equipment to make firewood.
I"m pumped for sure
I knew eventually you’d have a new splitter, what an upgrade! Happy splitting 🎉
Thanks!
Very nice, that was a good tour you had and looks like you have a solid upgrade. Enjoy.
Thanks for that Earl
That is a serious piece of machinery. You were so excited about it I thought you were going to marry it!
hahah I'm still excited about it
Wow, first pull. Congratulations Sandy 🎉
No joke, first pull. Looking forward to using it
I am from Syracuse ,New York. I am so pleased to see that you got one of the best wood splitters out there. You will save your body with it an you will wind up lasting longer too.
Thanks Lawrence. I'm looking forward to the saved time
Great overview Sandy, much appreciated
Sure is quite the unit
Congratulations on the last wood splitter you'll ever have! From my observation A pile of wood that would have taken 4 hours can now be finished in 15 to 20 minutes this splitter is awesome! Great video Sandy
Absolutely! It's making things quick and more enjoyable all at the same time
Good morning Sandy I’m glad to see you got a good splitter that is an excellent Woodsplitter .All the best with it I enjoy your videos take care
Thanks for that Joseph!
that's a awesome splitter you have there. it's built tough for sure and it splits the wood like butter
100%
Good morning Sandy! Nice solid strong splitter and made in Canada. I've seen these Eastonmade's on some of the other vlogs that I have watched and have been duly impressed with their performance. Sure beats swinging a splitting maul, lol. Have fun and be safe. Greetings from Peterborough.
Thanks Ken. I'm excited to put some hours on this thing. Sure makes wood processing fun
You’ve got yourself a top quality made in Canada machine!!! Happy for you!!
Thanks Roger! It's one heck of a machine
Looking forward to my ultra. Spring 2024. Looks like a versatile beast, nice walk through
Great to hear that! You'll love it as much as I did for sure!
Morning Sandy! You are going to love that wood splitter. Crazy fast and powerful. The 4 way is great for some consistent size wood but the single wedge is great for anything - especially for some of the big knotty stuff you had today. Have fun with it! Cheers!
Thanks Gord! I’ll be sure to try that single out as well. Having a blast so far
Hey g.p. you should get over there and show Sandy how to use that splitter!
@@hunny.bfarms9284 LOL! I am sure he will be a pro in no time!
Haha truthfully I was watching your videos Gord before I operated mine to learn how to operate it haha
@@sawingwithsandy LOL! Thanks Sandy!
Sandy,
When splitting bent/curve wood, try turning the concave side down; the blade will follow the grain forcing the wood to stay against the table. Great demonstration video. Thank you for sharing.
Cheers!
Faithfully,
James
Thanks I appreciate that. Brand new to me and that one piece was a dog to split.
Sandy, that thing is a weapon. Awesome
I hear that David!
It made your life easier from the first pull. No more doing your fancy pull start dance! The name I thought when you were plowing through those rounds was Knotty Nellie. Super happy for you! No buyers remorse on this hefty gal! Hope your enjoying the beginning of fall as much as me!🍁 Take care Sandy 👋
No remorse here that's for sure. It's going to be one great addition and save me a bunch of hassle with the old one
That's a good looking wood splitter!!! Congratulations
Thank you!
Massive hydraulic pump adapter!!
Wish I could get one of these!
Congrats Sandy
Thanks appreciate that.
Great review
Hello from Pennsylvania! Wow, this is so much faster than your old splitter, and one thing's for sure, you won't have to worry about your bees getting inside this one.
Hey Rolo! This thing sure is a quick unit. Looking forward to using it more
I have been watching "In The Woodyard" and I think he had his for 3 years.
Your gonna love it.
Someone said remove the hitch. You will learn to keep it on or remove, but putting on engine side for in your property so it does not get hit by your wood after being split.
Adjusting the wedge, have a jack so you can raise it with little effort on your back.
Great points Art! Lots to learn for sure
Sandy, the bottom twin "beams" you showed that you can see all the way to the other side...I understand all about the possible moisture issue that can arise, but I would add some type of screening to each side to prevent wasps from building nests in there as it is a perfect place for them to do so.
Good idea there Mike! Appreciate that.
Great splitter sandy. I have one petty flaw. I would put a screen in the ends of the channel beams to keep out the wasps
Great point Mike! I may do that
You really needed a new one. Congrats.
For sure Rick. I was overdue. Lucky the old one held on as Long as it did
That’s a beast, nice and fast.
Thanks Peter. Sure is a slick unit
That thing is a beast!!! Like it!
Sure is!
Wow that thing is fast you better keep your hands out the way Sandy.
That’s for sure!
Nice piece of equipment there Sandy 👊🇺🇲🇨🇦
Thanks Tim
I’m still really happy with my SplitFire purchase last year. Good luck with yours.
Those are nice units as well Frank
really nice i like the single wedge better. your dad will love it as much as you do. engine ran great and pulled the pump really well. to get the most out of it would take 3 people it is so fast. take care, be safe and well.
Thanks John. I"m sure he's itching to try it out for sure
I can hear the excitement in your voice. That large 20 gallon oil reservoir will probably help to keep things cool. Like a giant radiator. That wedge system is slick.
Time for a conveyor. That split wood piles up fast!
Wood sure does pile fast!
Great piece of equipment. It will definitely allow you to split more wood in a much shorter period of time.
I'm looking forward to the time savings for sure
That's a nice one for a small setup.
Some have conveyor belts with automatic feed and cut to length automatically and split eight different ways, etc.
Congratulations have fun
Thanks Mike
Very nice!
Thanks for that!
hi nice job well done john
One slight drawback is no log lift but a round too heavy to lift can be halved or quartered with a saw. No hydraulic wedge either. Maybe they could be an addon option for the Ultra. One needs a model up for those. Otherwise, real nice splitter and real nice tour of it. World class stuff.
All good points Neil. I think to likely keep the price point where it is some of those features maybe had to go to higher models. Not too sure though. I figure I'll load my tractor bucket with the heavy rounds to lift it up if needed.
Wow that does a good job
Sure is a fun thing to use
The build quality and cycle time on that splitter is amazing, and with how you take care of your equipment your Great Grandchildren will probably get to use it as well.
Thanks Wallace! Sure makes getting out in the woods even more fun
Nice you made it to there shop to look at everything. Andrew must of seen a few of your video's using your splitter n felt bad for you so sent you home with a very long lasting splitter. Very good machine's just to expensive for most home owners.
He has a great operation for sure. One of the most knowledge people I’ve met related to hydraulics, splitters etc. I figure the time I’m saving will add up to great savings
Nice machine Sandy!! Now to make a way to get it from the table to the IBC tote without having to throw it, and a holder for your pickaroon
I think you’re right. I’m going to have to dig deep to figure something out.
Very nice, you are going to like it a lot! Get splittin'!
Thanks! It certainly is a great splitter! Game changer for sure
Great splitters!
Thanks! I agree. Solid piece right here
That splitter is a dandy, You're gonna have fun with that.👍.
Thanks Del! I’m enjoying every minute of it
Definitely a good addition to the wood processing I don't think you are going to miss the old one you do have some experience to aquire like any other new piece of equipment only one bad thing about this new equipment that will give you a problem when you show the center beam being hollow I did notice what a nice place for bees to make a nest two nice long hollow tube if you want to keep the air to circulate at least put something like screen caps or make sure you got a cane of bees spray with your machine if I was you I would mention it to the company to see what solution they would have don't want to tell you what to do but I believe it's something to be look at have a great day
Good points about the possibility for tests. I"ll likely put some screen over it or stuff some metal wire in there to help. Glad you mentioned that!
Congratulations, a splitter for a life time.
Brent
Thank you, appreciate that
That's a beautiful machine. It must be great fun to use, especially compared to that worn-out old bear you used to have.
Yeah it's like going from an old Chrysler to a Ferrari haha (no offence Chrysler)
I like the control on top too. You can operate it from either side.
I also like that. Allows for my dad to help me and he can easily access the opposite side to help load
Very nice. May I suggest removing the hitch while in operation, it's a tripping hazard, and you can position your IBC cage closer.
Good tip!
You'll quickly figure out that the single wedge does a much better/easier job on those gnarly crotch pieces of firewood. The Eastonmade ultra is a great splitter. Just like the your FX85 skidding winch you'll quickly wonder why did I wait so long to get this. Chris at In The Woodyard youtube channel has been running the ultra for quite a while. So that would be a good resource for tips and tricks on how best to use it.
I think you’re right!
Hi Sandy like your videos I am in Aberdeen Scotland and run my house completely on wood . You are having to handle your wood more than necessary with your splitter gwhere with a Farmi 36 you put the log on the processor cut it split it and conveyor it to your trailer or wherever. Now it is fast. Having been since 2006 I notice North Americans seem to favour splitters as to wood processors big mistake in my opinion processors save time for you to sawmill. Just bought a Norwood MN 27 something new for me mostly larch. Have fun.
Great to have ya on the channel. That processor sounds like a great tool for ya. One thing that likely holds back many from the processor purchase here is the cost compared with that of the splitter which is often considerably less. Sounds like a great sawmill ya got! Keep me updated how it goes when you get down to sawing. Thanks for watching
Nice machine. I hope to be able to use a machine like that some day.
Sure is handy
If anyone needed a new splitter it was you. fighting old junk just makes for a long day. would be nice to get an auto return valve on that so you can be throwing the wood in the bin and be ready for the next log automatically. Congratulations Sandy. Very nice machine.
Hey Scott. It does actually have an auto return valve I just wasn't used to it yet and was holding it to go backwards. Atleast I think that is an auto return valve haha
These are a very nice entry level commercial splitter. There are a few changes I would like to see…
1) catch table edged. I recommended to Andrew that they brake these to 45* instead of 90*. Chris from the woodyard can attest to my suggestion
2). Pinning single wedge. I also recommended put the “weld stops” on the single wedge at the highest position. I see no advantage to having multiple setting for a single wedge. Only needs one hole at highest setting and it will stay put during transporting.
Thanks Garny. Sure is a great piece of equipment
Hey Sandy, Great wood splitter, have fun with it. You haven't told us, how do the kids like the Pirate Ship?
Not quite done yet TJ but I am headed back out that way tomorrow to almost finish it off
Missing a sludge cup holder ...... 😁😁😁😇😇 The ULTRA is THE splitter. If one day I do upgrade from my 7 years old Brave dual split (35-40 face cord/year) I certainly go with an ULTRA from Easton.
hahah you know me too well
Good morning from central Fl.
I can't wait to see if your father likes it, as well a you do.
Thanks Sydney. I’m looking forward to getting him onto this splitter as well
Good video. Many splits in your future. Please put the cap back.
Nice
Awesome machine! If you dig a hole at the back end, you could put the skid there and just let the firewood drop off of the back into the skid :)
I think that's a good idea for sure. Will look into this once the ground thaws up for me
When you press the lever something's going to give. That is a strong wood splitter No Doubt.
Sure is one heck of a splitter eh!
Now it's time for a new shed for the New splitter
hahah isn't that the truth. Although I was starting to think maybe I could repurpose my old sawmill shed for now hmmmm
Actually Eastonmade did a custom splitter that was around 3sec cycle-time. Was the 24D I think with a small cylinder on it. Andrew did a video on it too.
Right on. Would be neat to see
Hey Sandy, you better watch out for a wasp nest building in that beam. It's a perfect spot for them. Other than that I think you have a great log splitter. That thing is built like a tank. Nice!
Great point Joseph! Thank you
Thanks
I appreciate that Jim! Thank you.
I was hoping to see some big rounds. Should be a good splitter. New project a table/ chute to allow the tractor to put rounds on. Eliminates so much lifting. Pickarons are great tools.
Stay tuned I’ve got 32” rounds coming
My goodness, what a machine! I can see how the 4 way wedge and fast cycle is a big deal. Just wow eh.
Yeah it surprised me a lot just how much quicker it is than what I"m used to with my old machine
Awesome splitter,
I made one in the 80’s
No where near the speed and efficiency of this one. Nice!
Sounds like a good one you built
Anything that’s lasted that long is a winner in my book
awesome
Thanks Terry!
Still watching but that thing is nice. Though here in south Carolina, we don't need heat for our winters. Thus dont really need firewood. I would totally get this if I lived in a cold climate.
Sure makes for a fun time. Something about it is so rewarding
Very nice splitter and now that I want one really bad I'm afraid to look it up because of sticker shock! 🤣 I'd rather get sticker shock before I want something rather than after, it's less depressing that way. 😉
Thanks Jeff. The firewood pile is getting bigger by the day!
I like the vertical splitters so I don't have to lift the logs onto it, I can roll and tip them on the foot saving my back! With the horizontal, splitting larger logs would be harder and if you need to split it more than once you have to lift it again and from both sides.
Just a thought, what if you dug down a small spot at the end of the splitter where you could put an ibc with the top a little lower than the splitting deck? You could then just throw the next log on, and it would push the previous one off into the tote...boost productivity?
Even tho a cylinder face is machined the piston/seal is able to move up and down especially under a load. I’m not sure if this actually helps or not on the ultra but it is an excellent design either way. The old pin in clevis style works but it allows lots of movement
Your living my dream bro!!! Haha
hahha I appreciate your support though John
Hey with it pushing the firewood threw like it does you could build a short chute so that the next chunk of fire wood you put in will push the split wood threw the chute and into the tote's
I like that idea! I'm going to have to get the head scratching going now thanks for that.
@@sawingwithsandy it would be best made out of metal but you could build the initial one out of wood to work the bugs out ... whatever bugs may be and to make the firewood slide better you can line it with pickup bed liner
MM77 Approved 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for that! Looking forward to getting the miles put in with it
Very nice splitter you have, should make it easier to split now
Thanks Larry!
You need to put the squarest end at the push plate. This will help keep the wood from jumping up & off the splitter.
Good tip John. Thank you
I like the single wedge less mess
I’m going to have to try it out real soon
Wow that's a nice splitter and should make splitting wood quicker and more enjoyable compared to your old splitter.
I agree Larry
Man that thing is powerfull
Sure has some grunt behind it for sure
Do they make a 6 way for it? What’s the tonage of the split force? Thanks
The American market has a 4 second splitter and headed out to several years. And it has an automatic return you don't have to pull the leaving to move around back
What splitter is that?
Take your hitch off. Set it up so the wood goes directly into your bin. The wood will keep pushing itself forward, no need to toss every split log.
Just a suggestion
Thanks C L. This was fresh from the factory tour so will have to do that for sure
Sandy you should give that sticker away to one of your blessed subscribers! ah ah!!!
Just kidding! It sure is a nice splinter but not my style I like the one that splits vertically much more efficient and less handling this style you have if you have a big block your man handling the wood with the vertical splinter you can just turn the bigger blocks as you cut them! These guys sell that one too! Mine is a homemade vertical. I love mine when I found it I bought it and did some modifications to suit myself. I always look to better anything I get and make it a bit better! Remember what the handlers are saying BUILD BACK BETTER! lol!
Those vertical splitters are nice! The Eastonmade Axis is a great unit as well. Got to see it being made at the factory and it sure is a stout unit! Any real big rounds that i've got coming up I"ll likely roll into my tractor bucket and lift up for easy handling
Beautiful what a dream machine how much would keep that baby covered at all times thanks sandy passing this one to friends enjoy!!!!!!!!
Thanks Chuck! Sure am happy to be running the new equipment
Awesome splitter … hopefully you will put a screen or something on the end of the beams … dot to keep the bees and wasps out of there !😂
For sure. Don't want those wasps reminding me they are there haha
Hey Sandy, brainstorming here a bit. Eastonmade says shipping will end up costing a bit more from their factory to Wasilla. Any chance you wanna tow/haul one to Dawson next fall and I meet you there to grab it! 😂
Had to ask… I swear I will figure out how to get my hands on one without breaking the bank on freight! I also need to study Canadian geography since I really don’t know where various areas are in relation to each other.
HahH probably would take me over a week to drive there
I think having the engine up high is hard on the ears. maybe a plywood cover and sides to protect it from the weather and reduce the noise. Some times I hold a large chunk of split wood that needs split in half up so the main blade will split it in half you can let go as soon as the pusher holds it to the blade.
I find I don’t notice as I’m wearing ear muffs while splitting
Think you’re right about using the single wedge for the big ones. I’ll have to give that a go next time around
I'm no expert, but this machine looks to me like it lands squarely in the "Not screwing around" category. I wouldn't be surprised if you do a 20-year review on it someday.
It’s built well that’s for sure!
Looks like it should get the job done.
Absolutely Gene!
You should make a comparison video with your old splitter
For sure Ian. I’m going to have to get the old splitter dusted off just for thay
That thing is Great! What ton is it? I have two 35 ton splitters but they are slow compared to this one!
Rated at 14 ton but I haven’t found anything it won’t split
@@sawingwithsandy Awesome!!!!!
