"I will MAKE it .... Legal".
Tanya = Not a war crime..
There is quite a lot that can be done to eliminate the protected status of a civilian populace. Taking up ams as insurgents is one of them. Using protected structures like churches as a fighting position is another. Executing prisoners of war is another. Doing it on camera is just gravy.
There is a very strong reason why partisans and insurgents need to have good supervision from special forces Or other military personnel trained in the laws of war.
Besides that IS Eren Jaeger right there !!! Begin the Exterminatus!!
Specifically she got Ordrs to eliminate all the remaining Mages. The Entente Soldiets were the ones escorting the remaining civilians and the only ones with the experience How to avoid artillery fire.
HER troops (Grantz) did not fire directly on civilians.
Tanya introduced a lot of things to the War College and Operations During her academy time.

Yeah they had it coming...when combatants use human shields they suddenly become morally outraged when it doesn't work...when terrorists hide amongst a minority ethnic group everyone suddenly pretends that group is unjustly targeted and persecuted for no logical reason.

Just to be clear about which side is which (since the brothers were mistaking the Entente as the French):
    - The Entente Alliance represents the Nordic countries. They invaded the Norden region (which was the Empire territory). Their mages use skis.
    - The Republic represents France. Their mages mount magic powered mechanical horses.
    - The Allied Kingdom (of Albion) obviously represents the United Kingdom. Their mages uses magic powered broom-like equipment, which could have been a reference to Magicians and Witches, but their equipment is mostly provided by another force.
    - The reason the Dakia map is slightly different from our, is because long ago, they lost par of their territory to the Empire.

    Hello!
Once again there are a few things omitted in the show that grants a bit more context regarding new characters or why they are in a new location.
Keep in mind that Tanya essentially wrote the Rules of Engagement/International Law and everything that it implies, which Strategic HQ is using religiously. Tanya is re-assigned to the Rhine, it has devolved into full-out trench warfare along with being assigned troops to train and give supplemental lessons due to a lack of manpower back home. This should give an idea of just how far the Empire is actually being stretched thin. Warren Grantz is introduced there and joins Tanya and Co. in a mission to infiltrate enemy territories at night to capture some troops for interrogation. Once the troops have been trained up and ready to deploy Tanya gets called back to deal with the insurrection in Aréne.
Turns out Republican Mages promised to liberate Aréne and fight alongside the Partisans until proper help arrived, motivating the populace to rise up even further and start killing off the Garrison and Imperial citizens, or their own, that support the Empire. The legalities start getting a bit blurry here as Tanya engages the Republican Mages, once they are dealt with the citizens still remaining in Aréne are then warned to evacuate as those that remain will be treated as combatants and will be dealt with accordingly. If I remember correctly Tanya and Co. doesn't actually engage any of the Partisans other than the Republican Mages and recording her call for surrender, and evacuation along with recording Imperial captured troops and citizens being shot. This, in turn, will legally remove the 'civilian' status from anyone still remaining in the city and thus allow them to be engaged in the pursuit of saving their own troops and citizens from people who have said that they would not stop fighting and killing them. The last bit of bombardment was targeting the Republican Mages escorting the Partisans out of Aréne, using the civilians as cover.
Nobody enjoyed any of this, least of all Tanya who is taking solace in the fact that the law is on their side, along with having proper documentation proving the acts of wanton slaughter that the Aréne partisans have brought upon innocent people. The show loves to depict Tanya as a psychotic loli when she is anything but, kind of assassinating her character from the selfish utilitarian that she is into a crazed murder-hobo.
Another sizeable chunk, but here you go.

The anime, more than adaptation is a complement to the novels
The novel read like actual history books and are excellent at worldbuilding while the anime is more character focused

  • @DanielKjeldal

This actually also touches onto Partisan law, which was a very real law that was in effect all the way into the post WWII environment in most nations.
Under that law, if you are a regular citizen that picks up a gun and shoots at a soldier of an occupying force, you are not protected in any way under military law and a long drop with a short rope around your neck is the most likely outcome.
As with so many other things in war, this law was often abused by nations as they became more and more desperate to win, in particular the Germans took this way too far in their occupied areas.
Anyway, by designating the civilians as combatants they are now considered un-uniformed partisans and as such it is entirely legal under the military laws in the show to not accept their surrender, not take them prisoner, and to give them no quarter.
So, technically not a war crime.
Reprehensible, yes, but as long as they win, it's not a crime.

And it is actually still legal to do some of the things shown for instance it’s legal to attack things like civilians dwellings and churches if you have reason to believe and enemy is using them as a meat shield essentially which they did since the enemy forces were using houses as sniping posts which was why they were allowed to torch the city essentially it’s one of the big issues with the Gaza fight right now

Brits got there first. At night. In bombers that weren't all that advanced, in any way, from those that served at the end of the First Great Mistake. It was also Brits that showed the world how to cause a firestorm in a city when they flattened Hamburg during Operation Gomorrah.
