I'm a little weird when it comes to backups. I wrote a simple script and run it daily, backing up my important data to one of my NVMes, then once a month or so I backup everything to 2 external HDDs, again with a script, and I always keep the important things backed up on One Drive as well, making use of the Family account stuff you mentioned. Not the greatest system, but it works well enough.
I should probably get a NAS and simplify things but it's hard to justify the expense...

That sounds like a great backup system, basically the 3-2-1 strategy. It sounds like you have a good mix of local and external backups. A NAS is nice, although there certainly is a 'Synology tax' (or QNAP tax, etc) so rolling your own backup solution and/or your own Homelab NAS is probably the way to go IMO.

In the Hetzner portion, you hid the server/name information from the robot panel page but left it visible on the FileZilla client! To the main point, I've been comparing options for cloud storage and with such a big push for it nowadays, kind of odd there are no great options. The fact that Hetzner offers so many different connection methods is quite nice even if the speed may be a bit slow depending on where you are in the world. Works well enough for the purpose I need it for though.

Whoops, thanks for pointing that out! RUclips have got a "blur part of a published video" type feature so I'll give that a shot. Thanks for the comment, interesting that you have concluded similar to me. Yes it's odd how much storage is out there for the big guys to use, but then it's so hard/expensive for us to use. I continue to be happy with Hetzner, especially because I just set my Homelab NAS to backup twice a day (usually at times that I'm not actively working) so the slightly slower speeds don't affect me too much either :)

Silly question but why do you keep your cctv files? i have 6 cameras and a 1TB drive keeps the recordings for at least 2 weeks before they are written over , my thinking is that if i havent noticed that something bad has happened and i havent noticed in 2 weeks then its not that bad ,
Im just curious if i should start keeping my files for longer. I really dont like the idea of my cameras having access to the net , to the point i have a physical rotary switch that i just click to update the time , i am not confident enough to write rules for my PFSense , and a physical switch cant be hacked i guess

It's definitely a fair question, not silly at all 😊 I only keep them for 2 weeks or so too. I need to review the quality settings, but they're 3k and 4k cameras and a decent bitrate, so they mainly use up a lot of disk space. I would like to store a month's worth of footage though, because if I was ever away for a week or so, I kinda feel like 2 weeks might not be enough (for example if a neighbour pops round after a week or so to say 'oh by the way, while you were away this happened..' and that footage has just been deleted). I get your point though, and it's cool that you use a switch for your system.
