As always, we are so grateful to have you joining us on our journey here and we appreciate all your support ♡
When pouring those foundation blocks: don't try to dry them out. Concrete doesn't get hard by drying. It gets hard via a chemical reaction that needs water. By drying you are removing the water for that reaction and greatly weakening those blocks. It will be much stronger if you spray them with water and keep them wet for a few days. 48 hours at minimum. Concrete continues to curr (get stronger) for more than 28 days. It reaches minimum strength in about 7 days. So DO NOT dry it out!
Wow! Never to old to learn!! Thanks 😊
Well said by an obviously experienced concrete technologist!
so interesting! thank you!
Sending you all so much love! So grateful to share this journey with you 😽😽😽 Mr and Mrs A
I always look forward to your videos! You two are truly inspiring! Much love 💕
Yes THANK YOU !!❤
We are grateful to be appreciated by you two too! Blessings 🌱
Drew, you are a MACHINE! You are going to be so healthy into your old age, working so physically every day.
Some day the two of you will look back on these times and say "how did we ever do all that?"
Healthy in his old age, I’m thinking the total opposite, i busted ass all my life and now at 66, it hurts like hell just to get out of bed. Remember, “work smarter, not harder” live all of your video’s!!! From Ft Myers Beach!!!
I find it quite amazing how Drew can somehow make new parts for something that doesn't exist in Portugal and make it work to solve the problem. You are very resourceful with a can do attitude. It won't be long until we see you and Britany living in your new house. How are those things you planted doing now, just wondering.
You guys are saving a bunch by doing so many projects yourselves, but I imagine nothing is cheap, and it's also time consuming and exhausting work. I am very impressed with everything Brittany and Drew do to make their Watermill home, an expression of who they are. It's all coming together.
You know I was having an anxiety attack today because of something I have to do today, but watching your video, I have calmed down. Thank you. I love you 2. From a short fat old lady from Michigan. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
If you can find 'elastomeric' paint, I suggest paint the top of both containers. The white will reflect the most heat. I guess it might not be easily available in Portugal, but it is worth a try. ... I was with and organization that was given an old flat top tar roof (aka black tar roof) building to use for a few years. We just poured it onto the roof from 5gal buckets and used mops to spread it, we could measure an almost immediate 20F drop in temperature inside the roof as we were spreading it. Good stuff and not very expensive vs doing a more 'conventional' roof. It also filled several water leaks we had. Just a thought.
You could Cover the top of the Container with Soil and let the Grass grow on it for a natural Cooling system!
The corners and edges of these containers can take the load, but the panels are just some thin sheet metal with no reinforcement other than what comes from it's profile (corrugation). Grass to survive long term would need over a foot soil, all of which saturated with water would weigh several tons. I don't know if I would trust that roof under such load.
goodbye container roof stop and think ,water retained, and rust followers a metal skillion roof cheap quick and easy have done my containers this way has an air gap ,of course being a builder i would not have any idea so far rooves have been there 25 years
Great idea!!!💡
Getting the container in place was amazing to see. Wow! He certainly knew what he was doing. Loved Brittany going for a walk…with the three cats following her.
Bottle jack up the container and replace the wood shims before you load up the container. It's going to be harder when the containers full. My two cents, for what it's worth.
Sound advice.
Maybe, add screen to the inside of the vents to prevent bugs and then add more vents? Incredible work!
Hi Brittany & Drew! Every new video is an adventure!!! When you installed the square vents, Drew, the first thing I thought of (from experience) is to add a mouse-proof metal mesh *and* a thin window screen mesh behind it to keep flying & crawling insects from getting inside the container. Mice/rats can do enormous damage in short time. For us it was a pregnant mama tree rat displaced by nearby construction. She got inside our house due to a dormer soffit not being sealed during construction … mama’s nesting instinct caused $3,500 damage inside our house in only six days). It was an expensive lesson learned.
Very good advice.
If the roofs got too hot after this, put a few planks under the insulation panels, so there is a little gap and wind can move under it freely. That is another layer of heat protection.
Just wanted to tell you two how much my husband and I enjoy watching your channel and renos. It’s fascinating to see how everything is done. Drew, you are so brilliant the way you figure things out and you have such great attention to detail. Great job!! Oh, my husband recommends installing a 12v kitchen fan (powered by solar?) to pull the hot air out of the new sea-can.
Look at those happy tails. You can tell those cats are well loved and looked after and they have found their human.
Oh wow, you can see that your project continues to grow. You and your wife are both doing an excellent job. It's a pleasure to watch you do it.
Thank you so much! It’s a pleasure being able to share this all with sweet people like you 🤗🙏😽
@@Mrandmrsadventure I have to thank you because it is so much fun. Best regards from Germany
Storage is so important glad u got another container, and can insulate the top.. Everything is looking great guys!!!
Hey guys, about the air inlets not having bug screen, at my place i simply bought a bug screen 1meter by 1 meter ( found in any store) cut the circle and glued to the aluminium inlet with silicone!
Great on windows too.
Drew. You get your example and work ethic from your dad! I saw how well you worked together, cleaning and repairing after the hurricane in Florida! Brittany, you are Drews perfect balance and kitty moma! So can i say, Happy Kitty Father's Day to Drew?
That vent on top of that scond container would be exactly what i would expect to install!
You guys are amazing! Thank you for the great video❣️...again!
Absolutely itching to see the inside of the mill
Love seeing your dreams flourishing in front of our eyes. It’s a beautiful dream coming true with lots of hard work .
It’s so entertaining to see you come up with things that will work for you with what’s available. Great job
Drew- top of container, either make them or purchase them, large square plain concrete pavers. Place them on top of your insulation boards. Not only helps to reflect sun also adds more fire protection as well.
A solar powered, thermostat controlled powervent would do wonders to cool the containers. Maybe bury some 6 inch tubes to draw air thru like geothermal . It's great to see so much progress. Shows hard work and determination pay off.
A big shade cover over your containers will go a long way in keeping them cooler.
You’re going to get that oven effect once the container gets hot. It is like a pan on the stove, once the ambient air around the metal heats the walls they will retain the heat. Same thing will happen in the winter. Your watermill brick will do the same. I had an old brick building and it was always a week or two behind weather changes. You could spray water over the container to help with neat exchange, and shade will help. Usually the direct sun will be 10-20 degrees warmer than the air. Stay cool!
When you are ready to replace the wood used for leveling the container, maybe you can add more gravel to raise your blocks. As always fun to watch your progress.
i guess fixing vents on the door would be easier (big flat areas) ..and combine for each hole one bug free (inside) with one with adjustable vent (outside)
Heat rises. Maybe put a few vents on each side on the upper sides of the container .off set from the lower.
ones.
I loved the aerial view at the end of this one. Everything is really coming along on your property. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I love it!
I remember when you put your first container in place. Those guys placing your container in place have nerves of steel. Good idea about the vent in all this heat. Yikes, if it gets too hot, hope you can sleep a few nights within the thick walls of the mill! The cats will probably follow you in.
Such hard work in an extremely hot weather - this is admirable! Thank you for sharing your tips! Great job with the container's ventilation! Improvisation is key in Portugal✌️. I love watching the kitties and how they follow Britney is adorable 🐈❣️🐈❣️🐈❣️
Amazing work you got done. I love your channel. Those kitties are so sweet. They walk with you. 💖
I also am impressed with your dedication to the intricate workmanship to even the details of trimming and sanding the base supports. I wish I was there to help with the container ventilation and leveling. I think the small vents do not pull in enough cool air get that airflow in hence more in-more out. I am a self fabricator in steel, wood to what ever material I can get my hands on. I liked the Drew adapting knowledge in the vent fan installation. Good to see these intense thoughts being used in these episodes and Brittany has the heart of a giant with the eyes and ears to intrigued us with this weeks vid.
Britney said the wind direction was blowing towards the container front doors, so why not stick the vents in the bottom of them and have the exhaust at the other end of the container ?
Work with nature, never against it 🙂
Great thinking! We considered this but it seriously blows in the directions of the front doors and we didn’t want dust blowing inside.
@@Mrandmrsadventure Fit some cheap vacuum style filters in a wooden frame to the inside - just a case of giving them a shake and clean every know and then.
Ay least it will be cool inside 🙂
Wow! Great job! I love Drew’s ingenuity with making things work from what he can find. And I’m sure the little fairies appreciate the concern for their wings. 🪽
Love from Mary in SoOC. 💗
🥰🧚🏻♀️💫 building a safe place for all magical creatures big and small 🙏
@@Mrandmrsadventure Love it!! 💗✨🧚🤗
To insulate the tops of your storage containers, have you considered a green roof? Green roofs have been known to reduce interior temps by up to 10 degrees and you’re half way there with the insulation layer already in place. Good luck. Love your content.
Good Sunday morning,Happy Fathers
Happy Father’s Day to you too! 🩵🤗💙
The additional container is going to give you so much needed storage. The terraces look so good. Just wondering if it would make sense to put drainage channels on each of them (like you did next to the road) to channel the water down to the creek so that it eliminates erosion?
Hi Brittany and Drew perhaps when your digger guy returns you could have him lift the container remove the blocks where the wood is and add another block to level it up
Yes! Adding it to the Nelson list ⭐️
You guys are so amazing. The amount you have accomplished just in the past few months is incredible. That was a great idea to put the insulation on the top of the containers. I love when leftovers come in so useful.
Here's an idea to secure the insulation. That green shading cloth is really good, durable and cheap from Fruticoop you could throw it over and lash it down it would also provide a measure of sun protection for the insulation.
I was going to suggest the same. Some type of shading cloth over the container would help a lot, and they are cheap
Great idea! We know exactly the material you mention.
@@Mrandmrsadventure what about solar panels up there?
The scope of work you're doing is 🤯
Cover the blue insulation board with tarps to kerr ER p the sun from degrading it. Then maybe use cut thin tree trunks, and straight 3-4” diameter branches to cover the tarps to hold in place and slow down the degradation of the tarps.
Once the house reno is done. You could turn the container into a guest house with a deck that extends out over the cliff. ;)
Do you have access to regular roof vents or solar roof vents or solar exhaust fans? May need to add some vents near the top or/add a couple of twirli vents. Later insulating the inside. Shading : trees, tarps, canopy - sunshade, wood/galvanize/poly sheets/etc.
Hi Drew.Happy Father's day Cat Dad.And to your Father Drew Happy Father's day to him and to Brittany's Father Happy Father's day to him.And the Men that Work for you guys Happy Father's day to them.Love you Brittany and your Cats 🐈🐈🐈. Have a blessed day you and Drew and your Cats 🐈🐈🐈.❤ You all take Care Love Raquel.Keep going great.
Paint the insulation white. It'll reflect more light and absorb less heat.
Fantastic job on the container and the vents. BUT my favorite part of the video today was the sunset walk with the kitties. I am a real softy for those cute little kitties.
Oh my, I say Wonderful drone shot of your home and land. I love your channel. You are awesome people. Lonn of Love
When we lived in Australia we got a solar fan and installed it below the roof vent. Pulled the air in from the low level vents and made a huge difference. We got it from Ali express
With as much land as you have and with the need to constantly be doing work on the land, you might want to consider buying a small tractor and/or skid steer with some attachments to make doing all that labor easier. You are always going to have to be doing work on that long driveway you have, so probably a good investment.
Good morning beautiful people ❤ now let's take in a deep breath, and let it out. Time for the show. Have a beautiful day namaste 🙏
😍🙏😽
Great idea insulating the roof of your containers! Since you mentioned that it gets windy, I'm wondering if, as an added protection, it would be a good idea to tie some paracord or twine of some sort to really tie it down in case of big gusts of wind. I'm assuming that chasing them down by the river would not be a fun day 🙂
Keep up the good work guys it's a really nice place you got there!
Anybody else clap when he said Nelson will be back soon. Only found this page last week and now watched every episode. Gutted I have to wait till Sunday now. Patience is not easy. Loving this adventure you are taking us all on. Thank you 😊
😍🥰🥰😘😘 we can’t wait to see you Sunday!! ❤️❤️
Should have had extra blocks made. That was a smooth delivery.
I love this video, I’m building a homestead in the algarve and was wondering where the container supplier is based. They seem excellent and I like the idea they rust proof, paint and add doors.. There’s a lot of cowboy container sales folk in Portugal
could you try and create some kind of garden space on top of the containers. Would look good and also act as an insulation. Not sure what would be suitable for the climate but something drought tolerant i guess to reduce the need to water much at all. We have a container set up on our property here on the Isle of Skye and we added a Sedum roof. Mostly to blend it in more than insulation right enough
Your courage in another risky container delivery to your off-grid homestead in Portugal is truly admirable. Your determination to overcome challenges and build a sustainable home reflects your pioneering spirit. Here's to conquering new frontiers and thriving in your unique journey. And I am Floating Village Life.
Drew I am very impressed looking you so strong working to achieve your dream with your with so always happy to support you in your hard journey but to your home a huge Watermill enjoy the container that will help you to clear and make room for the builders what an adventure a God Bless keep well take care bye
GREAT IDEA MR. ADVENTURE. COVERING THE ROOF OF THE CONTAINER WILL HELP WITH THE HEAT. NICE WORK MR AND MRS A. THANKS FOR SHARING
I love your videos and I was thinking when you get your house done you should make the containers into little cabinets for your family or friends to visit and you could build like big shed to store all extra tools and things you want out of the way ❤
bottom of the container is fully rusted, i hope they change it for you as they said, your house and every thing is coming up very good, good hard work
If you ever work under direct sunlight, my advice is to always wear a hat/cap to avoid sunstroke.
Love the aerial view! You have changed the property so much! Looking fantastic!!
Are you guys going to be thrifting anywhere to get furnishings? You can find a cheap few windows for the new shed to get some good cross ventilation for the new shed--is there a local mercantino? Would love to see some shopping episodes. I love when time period specific things are ‘found’ and re-homed…Just wondering! Great job!
humble suggestion yo purchase some clear tubing fill with water and a dye food colour does the job and you have a level no more timber that will rot water finds its own level old method cheap and works 100%,as said below next time wet the blocks and metal ant caps do help keep vermin i.e ants OUT,turn down 45 deg ,never be too proud to ask for help from those that know will save you time and especially money,all-so suggest you roof the container reason keeps cool and stops rusting over time, only need a skillion type roof with d fall to one side and over hang at the door ,fit guttering and a tank to catch water can feed down to the house by gravity
You can add window screening to those little vents that close to keep the bugs out.
Drew you worked SO hard with the gravel & in the sun don’t forget sun protection! 💙 The new container could be a swimming pool one day after the Mill home is finished? Love the way the cats follow you Britt ….you are their Mother cat! 💜🇦🇺🐨🍻
Have you thought about old PC blowers? There outta be a thrift store or maybe even a computer store with some new blowers around you somewhere? They are all 12v and come in different sizes, this way you can force air blowing through
You might have used a solar powered RV fan for a vent. A tip for summer out side work wear white and a big floppy hat
Amazing progress you’re making. Property looks so different in the aerial shots now. Looking forward to a house update soon. Take care xxx
Love the mural! Love your journey. Been watching you from the beginning and am so happy for you both. Hard work and dedication always pays off!❤
Paint Whirly bird and pipe black the air heats in the pipe and the w/bird will turn without wind. Regards Billy
How about having the containers burried or at least half burried somehow inside the big stairs of your hill, so they won’t be that hot ? (with foam and water drainage) ... Or plant a tree with large leafs at one meter of each corner of the containers : in 2years, they will start to be good sun blockers.
It's amazing and fortunate that Drew is very resourceful. He can teach his hired help a few things too.
I truly love and enjoy the deep breath at the beginning of each video!
Hi Drew! You should screw that rotating vent, so it doesn't unplug in case of wind.
Another step forward. Even when there is a problem you figure a way to fix it. We really do take the advantages of living in the United States to get whatever we want or need. Always learning thank you for sharing always. 🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻
You can put filedon filter behind your air vent you should change it out some times but gives you clean air and bug free
You may already have this planned and I’m just restarting what you said in another post that a rack of solar panels would shade the top and provide more power then you probably could use. I don’t know about Portugal but some electric companies pay you for your overages if they are connected to the grid. Amazing work. Keep the shows coming.
You can get Solar powered air extractors, I've used them om on Polycarbonate roofs to help keep the underside cooler
I use lil 12v solar panels with a bunch of 12v fans, if the sun hits the roof the fans turn on, its like a big PC case ^^
Your videos have gotten better and better over time. Your edits are so good now. Some RUclipsrs make you want to take a nap, but yours are so interesting to watch from start to finish. It's awesome to see how much progress you guys have made! Looking forward to seeing what the future holds. And I love that you adopted three cats. I have three myself. Trying to figure out how to get them to Portugal safely!
I’m excited to see what you’ve all accomplished inside your future home. You both work so hard. Be thankful for your strength and youthfulness. Time goes so quickly. You blink and 30 years vanishes it seems at the blink of an eye. We’re under an heat advisory in northwestern PA. so we get what you’re experiencing there. Is your little swimming hole still available?
Blessings to you both!
Heard of Project Kamp? They’re also here in Portugal and in the last video they built a roof structure for one of their containers and they have the building plans available.
Hi guys a idea that might save you some money re all your gravel purchases, you have lots of spare rocks on your beautiful place, why not hire a mini rock crusher, rocks in the top small shingle out the bottom , save you a fortune, keep going it’s looking great
The sun is pounding on it - why would you not put solar panels with maybe a 5 inch space for ventilation underneath. That generates energy and shades your container?
Epic Episode! I Love seeing you work with your own hands ❤️ keep up the good work!
I think your comment of Amazon may be a tad misleading. You are correct in saying there is no official Amazon in Portugal but Amazon in Spain does have a Portuguese option and delivers to Portugal just as if it were Amazon in Portugal. I get next-day deliveries quite often to my house here in Portugal. Besides that, congrats on the new acquisition and the channel has been quite captivating with all the action going on.
Great job cutting those boards - Drew is really smart figuring out what to do and how to do projects that he can physically handle I love watching you two - a lot of courage and faith in the move you made to Portugal.....how hot does it get there? take care - hearts and hugs - MLA
Always look forward to Sundays and see how far you have come.. ♥️
😽😽😽
As has already been suggested, you should consider a "safari roof" on the top of the containers - a 1 or 2 inch air gap using planks set as far apart as possible between the steel roof and the insulation boards will make a big difference. I'd also look at a couple of solar powered 12 volt fans, side mounted as high as possible rather than roof mounted.
Brilliant use of what you have to attempt to cool the container!
Oh, seeing the parting shots with the drone of the nicely terraced hillside, i would be planning a cave like structure, underground storage or BNB area. Like you need more to do. Lol
Congrats with your new container 👍🏽
Two other RUclips channels i watch. Are building homes with new storage containers. One of them lives in Canada and the home is going to be so amazing. Also they bought a couple of the containers to organize tools an stuff in one and Xmas and house hold things in the other. And they have really got it organized. Wish I was as organized as they are. Love watching your videos allways look forward to new ones. Hope Brittany had a nice time visiting family and friends on her trip. Glad she got to go. I think the other channel I watch that is building a home out of the containers lives in Australia.
I had a friend tell me last week that the containers are in demand as airbnb vacation rentals. He said that market is very hot right now.
So cute! I just love the selection of music that you chose today. Very nice!
Have a look at what @Project Kamp (on this platform) did on their storage container roof for shade. Should give you some inspiration. Good luck with your project.👍
Luv the arial shoot. Kudos on all the projects!! 🦋😘👍🏾👌🏾💕
