Any time I sell a giant lot of commons on ebay, DKOldies ALWAYS buys it. I'm pretty sure they use bots to buy any retro game "lot" listed on there. The funny thing is one time I sent them a list of games I wanted to sell directly to their website and they gave me an insanely low price, so I put it on ebay, and they paid full price for them on there
Pat the NES punk talked about this. I think he knew the programmer that designed their bots. They scalp anything thats a deal then jack up the price 200-300%, or more, above market. Thats why its hard to find any decent deals on ebay.
@@johnsonpink6002 You don't really need a bot. Just a guy in the office (they show quite a few employees, just takes one) who scrolls through every auction on eBay, prices out the games, and enters a max profitable bid using My iBidder. I do it, everyone does it. lol. If you set a profitable snipe maximum for every single lot posted every single day (so hundreds of auctions a day), you will win at least a few at insanely low prices. For a collector, that's random and a huge hassle, I don't want a dozen overlapped lots of games in crappy conditions. For a game store? It's profit. lol.
I think the tactic of slashing the original price and showing a “sale” price is a psychological tactic to make the buyer think they are getting a discount
One thing I hate from dk oldies that they aren't doing and they need to do is they're not uploading photos of their products, I would like to see how the cartridge, disc, consoles difference between cosmetic flaw and good condition, etc looks like and they won't upload photos unless I request them when buying. What kind of business is that? At least other places you get to inspect the items before purchasing.
If you look at their videos they just pull your game off of a stack of the same game. At best you get the one on top and it's a gamble on it being better than the others. At worst they get rid of their lowest quality stock first.
@@Drew_Peacock Yeah, I was gonna say they probably don’t even know which particular unit they will send out until you’ve paid. And I don’t necessarily fault them. It doesn’t seem feasible for any company with a sizable stock to do that. However, they could add images of a typical console in whatever condition grade they use (“Like New”, “Cosmetic Flaw”, etc) and do their due diligence to make sure all units in that category are of reasonably similar quality.
Even if the game ends up being in pretty good condition, it can still be a huge waste of time if it's not what you expect. lol. I actually respect the guys who post photos of front, back and all the labels, even if they have sharpie or stickers on them, because it's honest and you know what you're bidding on.
Yeah it's wild. I recently got a silver slim, not jap so a little more expensive than 70, but no where near dko price. I couldn't believe they had it so much
@@SoulforSale 🤣 right the irony of wanting something that someone else has and they give you a price, and you dont have to buy it, but someone wil which is why they are in business
Never purchased from them and don't think I ever will due to their prices. However, watching their Shorts/Tiktoks of them rummaging through stacks and stacks of my favorite games of yesteryear certainly is satisfying.
My first and only experience with DKOldies was when my cousin bought me a copy of Super Metroid as a gift for like $120 LOOSE. When I saw the logo on the box my heart sank and to no avail when I tried playing the game it would glitch out and also had a dead save battery plus the pcb board was extremely corroded. I sent it back and got a replacement with a mismatched back cartridge cover. I would stay away it seems that they are targeting the normie and not the collector.
I’ve bought 4 SNES games from them so far: maximum carnage, marvels gem wars, super Mario rpg, and secrets of mana. I can admit they’re a bit pricier, like about 10$ more around. All games work so far. I was under the understanding that prices can fluctuate but I can’t confirm that. Great video!
@@thecawdfather87 yea, the games I got were definitely more expensive than eBay. It’s just easier to deal with dkoldies in case my games turn out to be fake than with some ebay sellers. (Although all the games I got are authentic so far from ebay)
I think another great thing as a collector is to always consult Price Charting. They’re not always 100% accurate (because the market changes quickly) but they average the prices sold on major sites online to give a pretty good estimate of the going value of videogames.
@@Viciouspiked I’ve noticed that sometimes the prices are a little lower than they sell for on eBay. Also, sometimes they account for a “cib” sale that isn’t fully complete in box. Little things like that. Overall it is very accurate though.
Not gonna lie I love their shorts and videos too. It makes me want to buy from them. Fortunately I'm not a robot and there's no way in hell I'm spending that much.
When I went to DK Oldies website, my jaw dropped when I saw the Wii console price. And then again when I saw the PS2 price. These are some of the best selling consoles of all time no reason they should be that price.
I am glad you did this take. People dont realize that peer to peer has zero overhead, and is completely different fromw hat DKOldies is offering. Grandma can shop with no worries on DKOldies with no knowledge or worry of no returns.
Exactly. Not to mention they are paying employees to take these apart and professionally clean and repair them. You aren't getting that on ebay. Plus bills on the building and they have to buy these things to be able to resell them. Nobody takes these things into account
And it's all in one place. You don't have to run around to a bunch of different places trying to find everything you want and then hope it works on top of that
@@vaderwilcox7398 yeah i get some great deals on collectibles on ebay, but the time, haggling, then risk of damage in mail with no warranty or replacement is always there. if youre time is more important than your money DKOldies does a good service. I wouldnt shop there, but I know what I am buying
@@CollectibleTechDeckDudes exactly. I understand how valuable what they do is, but personally I can solder and fix and clean my stuff myself. So I don't use them. But for people that can't, it's a good idea to go through them instead
@9:42 yes they’re a business with an overhead. But there are plenty of other retro game stores that are a business with a overhead(shipping services too) that doesn’t charge as much DKOLDIES. No excuses! Great video btw and you hit it on the nose in this video. And how you pointed out DK’s prices having an effect on retro game’s market price is a great point.
Free shipping for over 10 dollars, but higher prices than normal market. If they are making those prices that high just to pay their workers or business operating cost, than it sounds like they need some restructuring among staff or budget what they are spending.
The issue more so than being overpriced is that they claim to refurbish their consoles. Which they do to get it in working order(replacing the screens on a gameboy, cartridge slot on nes, etc, but they don’t replace the thermal paste on their consoles. The whole not giving you an authentic controller and giving you a replica really is ridiculous to some degree. If the console works fine when they receive it they just clean it and it’s done. So for a lot of their refurbished consoles their more used then refurbished. The overpriced aspect seems to only effect certain consoles like the GameCube, n64, and a few others. The console bundles all seem overpriced.
DK Oldies looked at the price of modded retro consoles and said "yeah that is the standard price for unmodified consoles". Also, that morrowind soundtrack I hear?
Great video! I always think if there is someone who is willing to spend this much there will be always someone who will sell it to them. No issue. They are running a business no charity. Ps I really enjoy watching their video! Pps I checked their website and I found things expensive but also I would never buy anything in gamestop ( which is very expensive too).
I gotta ask those who have used DKOldies in the past … are you guys afraid of using eBay , Craigslist , offerup , Mercari ?! The prices that DKOldies calls for I would never give them a breath of chance for business in comparison to those other avenues I mentioned earlier in this comment . They make great promo videos but their business sucks
I can definitely see both sides of the coin with this but I'm definitely not a big fan of anyone artificially inflating the price of games. I've been in the collecting game for about twenty years now, back then it was weird to collect old games so the prices were super low, but they just get higher year after year, especially with recent trends and "reseller" being a personality trait with some people. That said, DKoldies can absolutely charge what they want, but they won't get my business. I get that they have overhead, the game store I go to has overhead as well and their prices are very reasonable.
To be fair, the pricing on mercari is low compared to what I would consider current market for consoles. DK does overprice theirs, but most of mercari is those trying to just get rid of their old systems. There's slim pickings of businesses in their listings. For instance, after obtaining and refurbishing an sp, I would be selling that thing for a $50 profit at $155 on mercari (granted they own their site, but they are paying % selling "fees" in other ways). My consoles go from 160-200 depending on what my average purchasing cost is for everything, and how much time/effort goes into completely refurbishing the system (though I also ensure that everything is cleaned down to the motherboard and everything, including controllers, is first party for consoles bundles XD). Just giving the heads up that the costs of doing business is driving the price, and your ability to obtain at the cheap may not reflect the actual current market value.
Mercari is definitely the place to go! I've gotten a good few gamecube games from there for surprisingly cheap, and some of those sellers even include notes or gifts of their own. I got Melee for 40 bucks, and quite a few other good deals.
So a couple things that stood out to me in this video. You kept mentioning cost shipping, but at the beginning you read the part where they give free shipping in the contiguous US for orders over $10. I don't think that justifies the high prices but it's important to point out. It also seems with their consoles they usually have the option to sub the new third party controllers with original controllers for about $60. That said, I do think that they are generally overpriced. They do offer a short of better experience to scouring eBay and definitely a better alternative to Amazon. I don't want to defend them because they kind of price me out with how expensive the things I want can be, but I'd say they offer a generally good service for people who want to play old video games.
Yea that was my mistake honestly. I did read it again and caught myself about the shipping towards the end or second half of the video. I do these unscripted and off the cuff so sometimes it’s a lot to remember or retain while filming 😊
Yeah I figured it was just a mistake, since you read it right at the beginning. Overall I think it was a good video, and the comparisons to other sites that can demonstrate when the games or consoles are just ridiculously overpriced was a good inclusion too.
I actually ordered from them for my partner on Christmas. 3 games: 2 wii, 1 n64. The n64 was banjo kazooie in cosmetically flawed condition which I just had fingers crossed it wasn't damaged. I paid around 32$ for it. The game had like a highlighter straight across the cartidge which is okay. What my issue was I saw a banjo kazooie in good condition at the same price at a thrift store on the last day of my trip in another state. Doesn't bug me too much just annoying. The 2 wii games were about 20$ together and were surprisingly in insanely good condition almost like I just had taken the plastic off a new game. If anything Dkoldies is one of those websites you compare to ebay or mercari when you look for a deal. It's like, don't get your hopes too high if you do choose to buy from them because the quality clearly jumps massively.
Dk isn't bad. BUT. I only support one and one only store. I drive about 35 minutes to see him. He always hooks it up and we have built a haggle relationship responsibly. He will call you if your looking for a game or console. And he personally refurbished and cleans consoles. Support your local stores. But be weary. Some of them are essentially pawn shops. My dealer is a GOAT.
I think you hit it on the head saying they're feeding off the nostalgia. A friend of mine who really isn't into retro consoles bought a n64 through them after seeing the tik tok. I don't think it's a terrible company, but you can definitely find it cheaper.
I have to agree that some prices are more, I've bought from them only when my local stores did not have the game I was looking for, I think this video is a must for anyone who wants to buy from Dkoldies to make them an educated buyer.
I work at a local store and when they do the “original price” that’s always full retail price. Many things that to the average person seems scummy is an actual legit business practice even stores do
I think everyone above the age of 12 knows this😂 isn’t the point though is it really😂 it’s still scummy, don’t matter if Walmart is doing it or some random Joe
Two things that I believe you should have mentioned was they aren't even including original first party controllers with some of these consoles (without paying $60) and they aren't cleaned/refurbished property. You can get a super dirty controller or system that doesn't work while paying double the price.
recently bought a ps2 controller as an experiment because i keep seeing these types of videos. controller works fine, definitely not worth $60 though, had to get a tooth pick and clean out a bunch of dirt stuck in the crevices along the sides.
Great video. Side note: Can someone explain to me why a CIB black box copy of Super Mario World is hundreds of dollars depending on condition? It might be the most common game fpr the SNES. I don't get it.
Everyone’s talking about how they brought an old console for under $100 but whenever I go on ebay a Nintendo 64 with two controllers is over $250. Granted I live in Australia so everything is already expensive over here so if I decided to buy something from DKOldies it would be way over $300 to $400 😵
Personally from a business perspective, their "deals" are misleading consumers into believing they are getting a deal. Not saying everything on the website is outrageous, but definitely could use a rework. I have a great collection from my local game shops, yard sales, and flea markets. I won't get the best deal every time and sometimes I'll end up paying what they ask because to me it's worth it. Half of the fun is going out and finding the gems for great prices 👌
They may have overhead, but so does every brick and mortar store in my area, and they manage to keep things around Ebay prices or lower. Heck, even Ebay sellers have to deal with some overhead such as Ebay fees, Paypal fees, and USPS shipping costs that seem to rise every 12 days. Seems like this site is taking that 'Free Shipping Over 10$', adding brick and mortar costs, adding convention costs, adding refurbishment costs, and then multiplying by 2. A lot of these prices are just insane.
DKOldies, while seemingly looking like a nice company, puts on a facade that they are playful, when in reality, their entire business strategy is to bank off of other peoples Nostalgia of video games. It's even more annoying as these games and conmsoles will most likely never be remanufactured, so as the years go on, nicer consoles and games will become more and more run down. The price will either stay the same or rise. This is what these companies are doing for retro gaming right now. Just a huge cash grab for these people. What makes it even more daunting is the fact that these people will pay these prices! You'd be suprised what Ebay sellers sell these games/consoles at nowadays. I picked up an Original Xbox bundle on Ebay for around $120 after shipping. Included an OEM controller and Halo 1 and 2 aswell as 6-7 more games like Project Gotham Racing and Buffy the Vampire slayer just to name a few. I believe people think these "credible" websites are worth the money because you know you aren't gettting a defective product straight out of the box, but to have an option to either refurbish or keep the console in the condition it was found in, is absolute robbery on DKOldies part. Please, if you are thinking of buying off of DKOldies just do some digging on other websites like Ebay or Facebook Marketplace. You'd be suprised at the deals you can find from everyday people not just trying to cash in cause they know you'll pay for it.
They are overpriced. But I think where some people are calling scam is what DKoldies considers a 'refurbished' console. If I blow out the dust from a system, is that 'refurbished'? Some people think there's a distinction between refurbished and cleaned. But since there doesn't seem to be a legal definition of refurbished, it's a buyer beware market as to whether you think they've done enough work on those consoles to merit that price point. I personally think everything they sell is overpriced.
120 day warranty that nobody can beat? The local retro game store near me gives an entire year guarantee and youd pay about 1/3 of the price to what dkoldies charges
A warranty? Youd have to buy 5 non working SNESs in a row, at $50 locally, to make paying $260 to DK oldies make sense. They dont break that often and a couple minutes of cleaning is all they need. Selling items at market, not 200-300% of market, already covers overhead & profit.
glad you mention why there prices might be high. but you can find it locally maybe cheaper depends of course. other than that, the power is the hands of the consumer.
Great video, honestly as someone who collects retro games I understand what service they offer I think the controversy is over blown. I’ve only used them once and the quality was good enough but I knew I was paying extra. I usually purchase from eBay or conventions
I bought a psp 1000 on mercari with the original battery memory card and charger included, psp was like in new condition no scratches or flaws umd drive works perfect for $85 total including shipping and tax i was happy, then purchased some umds Gta VCS LCS Midnight club games case and book in great condition for $20 each after that got a 60gb sd card from amazon and downloaded the rest of my childhood games on there and for that price it was a deal compared to dkoldies
I bought a genesis from them, they filmed my order. I got the genesis with sonic the hedgehog 2, and 1 controller. I was shocked by the outstanding cleaning that was done to the console. Very clean, polished up. I played the game, no problems with the game at all. Unfortunately on the other hand the controller I received has a defect issue where the D-pad is stuck on the down arrow button. When I play sonic, he just looks down the screen by himself without me touching the controller. Luckily I have a spare controller from when I was a kid. It’s a very small problem in my eyes, I’m not one to freak out over something small of a mistake like this. I like DKoldies work, and how they’re saving our childhoods. The controller problem is so small I really don’t care about the 120 day return policy. If I were to suggest buying a product from them I’d say go for it. I believe I might’ve picked a flawed controller on accident which does lower the price to save money. Overall proud of the items I received.
So the point of your story is if you DIDNT have a spare controller from when you were a kid you wouldn't have been able to even play what bought. To contact, return, and get another back it would have been weeks. Glad youre happy but yeah, dont sleep on that 🤣 You bought something and wouldnt been able to use it for like a month because of a poor QA dept, that's a huge strike.
Yea but did you pay extra for it to be refurbished for the extra $60? If you are paying over $100+ over market value for an old console, Refurbishment should be the standard, not jus an add-on.
Lol they aren't "saving our childhoods" they are literally raping them. These guys are scummy crooks that'll bleed you dry with a fake smile. Or a real one. Probly makes em' real happy that saps keep falling for the rigamarole.
@@SoulforSale I’ve seen you on so many comments trying so hard to defend DKoldies, idk if you work for them or whatever but man, no warranty is worth paying 3 to 4 times the price of a console. Plus if you watched the video you’d know he said mercari does have butter protection so even if they send you a busted console you’re still guaranteed to get your money back.
They are definitely pricey. I will say it’s better to look at recently sold listing on eBay to get accurate current pricing rather than Price chart. Price chart averages sometimes from years of sales which won’t give a actuate current number. Many CIB and loose sales are not in the right section on price chart which gives wrong numbers as well
Nope. SNES $50 locally or $260 from DK Oldies. Even if one didnt work and you had to buy another youd still save $160. A fool and his money are soom parted.
Never assume a company offers health insurance. Heck Walmart does everything it can to keep employees under 40 hours a week do be able to deny their employees many benefits. We’re all aware they more than can afford it.
Prices are so ridiculous now. I bought a legend of dragoon complete black label for like $30 at my local game store. A few years back, I got a complete snes in box (not perfect shape, but at least no rips in the box) for $100 at a flea market. Don't pay these high prices. If you hold off and look hard enough, you will find a much much better price on pretty much any of these games or consoles. The prices on there are actually insulting.
They overcharge, and what you get, from my understanding, is usually some generic third-party controller. Still, if you want to pay 60$ extra, there's an option to get the actual first-party controllers that would have come with the console. So, it's the console's price and 60 bucks more if you want first-party controllers.
Two of my problems with dk is when people who are new into the hobby go to the site and they see a ps2 for that price they now think that their ps2 is that price or they think that the hobby is to expensive and move to a different hobby. My other problem is I feel that they are hoping for someone who doesn't know any better and will pay those prices which I feel is scummy cause collectors know that it's over price but a mom buying for her kid wouldn't know.
@@therealjaystone2344 honestly Amazon is terrible to use for buying retro games. Personally I say don't shop on Amazon for anything, but that's just me.
Retro stuff usually goes for more on Amazon, nobody complains about them. Also, the discount thing has been used by retailers for years, its been proven that people like to feel like they are getting a deal.
like unfortunately a good used game store knows that their stuff is just for certain people but the ones i seen nearby price guage to the max. A loose disc might run you $50 for a Wii game that is first party and $30 for third party that might be bad
the price changes sometimes once you click on it. Like for example mario kart 64 said $49.99 then when you clicked it was $74.99.... sketchy shit. 21:44 also from my experience, they dont update prices with pricecharting when it's out of stock. So clicking on the CIB copy of a game and seeing $34.99 is false because when it's in stock it'll probably raise to $89.99 or whatever.
The problem with dkoldies is they overcharge and underdeliver. Just about 0 of the "refurbished" ones are anything but a light dusting. Warranty stickers never broken, internally dirty and even broken. The non cosmeticly flawed orders showing up broken from damage highly unlikely from shipping, literally separating game, case, and manual all for individual sale, the list goes on and on
It's sad that in 2022 it's not a given that a "collector" actually plays video games. Glad you're one of the good ones. As for DKOldies, it's difficult for me to say as there are plenty of consoles and games that are worth very little in the UK - og Xbox, PS2 Slim, Wii, Super Mario Sunshine, Melee, etc. - that seem much pricier in the US, but from what you're saying they generally seem overpriced, and ultimately that is an issue for collectors like us as it does indeed drive up the prices of everything, especially amongst the uninitiated. After the $1million sale scam of the Wata graded SM64 (or was it NES SMB?), there were charity shops (equivalent of thrift stores or Good Will) selling PS2 era FIFA games for £5-10 despite the fact you could buy them in CeX (sort of like GameStop but grosser) for 0.50p, and as a company they're notoriously overpriced usually! People just heard 'video game' and '$1million' and pushed up ALL the prices, no matter how common or worthless they actually were, and we're still feeling the effects of that. So imo, I'm not a fan of DKOldies. They don't seem like they care at all about the community and are just happy building a business on the back of ripping people off. Yes, they're adding value by cleaning, testing, and providing a warranty, but mark it up by 10-20%, not the 150% they seem to be for some items.
Was just looking at a pre owned n64 with 2 pads, golden eye and mario kart 64 for £90...right there on ebay... DKoldies need to be stopped or at least price nerfed
I got my fat ps2 for 50 dollars description said non working won’t power up right there I knew it was a power supply board I swapped the power supply board out and now I have a working PS2. After I cleaned it up it now looks brand new 50 dollars
Their games will 100% influence the market mainly because of their following and influence. Wata games scandal got exposed in 2020 for internationally qnd artificially influencing the worth of games. The RUclipsr Karl Jobst has a very in depth video on how they did it. It was extremely messed up and greedy
That was a completely different situation. That was someone owning a grading company and the auction company. Or them working with each other. Dk is someone with employees and repair costs and building costs plus having to buy the stuff to begin with. Those racks they store stuff on aren't cheap. And I thought people wanted employees to not be overworked and to be happy in their work place? But then they see the prices that come with that, and all of the sudden it's not important?
@@vaderwilcox7398 there are dozens of small game stores that i go to that has employees, refurbished consoles and actually sell them at reasonable prices. There is no justification for them to charge 2 to 3x the price for a "refurbished" ps2 console with oem controllers. And dk oldies most likely sell 10s of thousands of dollars worth or games on a daily. They make a hell of alot more than alot of small businesses around my town
i will say i am local to dk oldies i actually sell to them and know a good bit about what they have going on there i stopped selling on ebay because what they were paying made no sense for me to sell on ebay after fees and shipping it makes sense for me to sell there plus me being local i just go there give them what i got and they come out with a price and check right then and there and i know they have alot of employees there building is very large and just so everyone knows they get sent a full fedex truck a day with people selling them stuff so i can only imagine how much money they put out everyday and really its FREE SHIPPING over 10 dollars and plus a 120 day warranty and i even talked to the owner for close to a hour a few months ago super cool guy and yes i am not saying i am going to buy stuff from them wouldnt make sense since i am always game hunting yes you can go on mulitple sites and find stuff cheaper but mercari you get 3 days to test if it stops working after you leave feeback then you just spent 110 just my point of view i guess cool video though
I would say the high prices would be fine if they would actually take their time with the consoles/games and make sure they are all working properly/cleaned and replace old parts and give you original controllers. But the fact that they are litterally selling people bundles with Chinese knock off controllers and systems that are opened up and dusted and put back together and sold as refurbished is shady af
I wish I could say I've played every single game in my collection... But I haven't. Life gets in the way sometimes :p ... But I will. Mark my words, I will. I'll keep retro hunting though, adding more and more games to the collection xD ... So my backlog will keep growing. But I'll fight through every game.
Hey, I know this may seem like an odd question, but you seem to look A LOT thinner in this video than you do in the Oblivion video you made 6 months ago. Have you been exercising a lot? You look great man. Anyway, I do believe DK Oldies is indeed overpriced, especially since you showed other places that sell these for much cheaper, but like you said I believe it's because they have employees to play and such. I do like their videos though. Solid coverage friend.
I have lost a lot of weight 😊 I had gastric sleeve surgery back in July and from December 2021 to now I went from 380lbs now I’m 214lbs 😊 thank you for noticing makes me feel really good 😊
DKoldies is 100% aiming at the typical nostalgic non-collector. This is biting them now, though, because the collectors are seeing how big they are and calling them out for their blatant overpricing and occasional bad handling of product. I wouldn't call them a scam, just because they aren't doing anything like taking money and never delivering or intentionally falsely advertising, but I would definitely call them predatory. That's the best word to describe them, because they prey on people who don't know any better both when they buy and when they sell and then reap all the rewards with fat margins. Lowball sellers, highball buyers, and keep advertising how Joey puts a funny keychain in the bank-draining order of 4 Gamecube games and a GBA player disc.
Best video on the DK Oldies debacle, theres other videos I've seen where the person speaking does it with such a negative tact that it comes off as disrespectful and just blatantly dumb.
They are trying to take as many trade ins as possible for nothing to turn around and flip it for allot. I can see DK oldies try take the market by buying all the retro games and when everything has been sold you have no choice but to buy from them in about 10 years
As a previous customer of theirs I’d say they skirt the edge of scam but never reach that point. It’s sucks that a company that sells old video games has fine print and nickel n dimes their customers in every way possible, but they never reach the flat out “you got scammed out of your money” level. They clearly set their own definitions as to good condition, cosmetically flawed, refurbished, and what constitutes a sale; that’s completely anti-consumer but for context I’d say other much bigger video game companies have been doing similar things for years. Truth be told DK Oldies is clearly just the latest hate trend 🤷♂️ All of this publicity is definitely a double-edged sword for them. I’m sure their site’s gotten exponentially more traffic over the past couple of months. Maybe they’ll learn something about fair business practices from all of this, or maybe not. Either way I’ve made my last dozen or so retro video game purchases from other entities.
Here's an education lesson on DK Oldies. They're not a scam. The product they sell is legit and everything I've ever boughten from them in the past has always been in great condition. With that said, their prices haven't always been this high. There was a time when they could legitimately be the cheaper option regarding certain games or consoles. Their prices began to hike up around the same time the retro gaming bubble started to gain traction. The problem is, DK Oldies does seem to realize the retro gaming bubble has burst, and they need to go back to their original business model and start competing on the price front again. I live in an area where there's a retro game store on practically every other block. I can get everything cheaper than DK Oldies sells for at this point. But with that said, they aren't a scam. Just overpriced.
Maybe retro game stores are better where you live. But a gamecube, smash, and double dash will be around 300 dollars before taxes... But ya it's still over priced either way on the website. I've had to stick mostly to trying to get craigslist deals the prices for retro games now are crazy even at "retro" game stores around me
Their youtube channel has 850k subs too which is no small number.. DKoldies is killing it despite their high markups. Is their social media marketing really that good
I just wanna hook my kids up with an super NES console and some games so they can enjoy the fun I had as a child but DKoldies made that impossible with their prices. There's no way I was going to buy their stuff knowing how often these console don't work and at that crazy price DKoldies is putting on these old, dirty, broken video game consoles. I hunted down on ebay a NES with an og controller and aftermarket power supply for like $40-$50 as well as a N64 for about the same price but no Snes yet.
Sadly, the window to collect these systems and games passed us by in the last 10-15 years. I bought a SNES on eBay in 2007 for $20, came with two controllers and 5+ games, Zelda, Mario etc. Don't even get me started on N64 and NES, they were stupid cheap. I even had a chance to buy Sculptors Cut for $100 and scoffed at the price....fml. Wish I grabbed more then. Now everyone is an adult that played these and have money to burn. So now we see these high prices because of that. You mention flea markets and other online sites to grab deals. Good luck with that. Before smart phones I would agree. Now everyone knows what these things are selling for and price accordingly. I haven't found a deal at my local flea market in YEARS. You may find a deal at a garage sale since most mom n pops don't know what they're selling little Johnny's old 'Nintendo's' for.
I ordered a xbox one s from them last week at $340 which is a bit much but they sent me the wrong power cord just by that it rubbed me wrong and the price I'll be doing my shopping somewhere else other then that the console looks great and the controller is in great shape too
Recently use mercari today, before ever seeing your videos. Kinda a weird site but google said its safe and has protection for buyers so I got a gba for $66 after shipping. Been looking for an unmodded one for a while.
Remember some of those are loose. Those "are not bad" complete no, but just cartridge yes. Also almost all consoles are garanteed to have second party controllers, you have to pay more to get original ones.
Some of their consoles don't work my friend bought a Xbox 360. and it wouldn't even turn on. and he paid over $145 for it not including shipping. so you can't guarantee you're going to get a product that actually works
to call them a scam, implies that they're lying about what they're selling you. to a degree they are because theyre saying refurbished etc, and after many other youtubers have shown, thats not the case as its filled with dust, original thermal paste etc. as for the price they're selling it at, its up to the buyer. if someone wants to pay 400 bux for a gamecube thats on them. I just wish i had the reach they have with their customers that they can charge 400 bux for something that can be had for
I missed the part where DKoldies is forcing anybody to buy from them verse the hundreds of other sources one could by games from. If people are willing to pay their expensive prices then why wouldn't they charge those prices?
Any time I sell a giant lot of commons on ebay, DKOldies ALWAYS buys it. I'm pretty sure they use bots to buy any retro game "lot" listed on there. The funny thing is one time I sent them a list of games I wanted to sell directly to their website and they gave me an insanely low price, so I put it on ebay, and they paid full price for them on there
Yea it's ridiculous I sold them a goldeneye for 25 they sell it for 70 dollars lol insane
It's profit. lol.
You should totally try to replicate this situation and record it, would make a great video
I think the tactic of slashing the original price and showing a “sale” price is a psychological tactic to make the buyer think they are getting a discount
That’s what I’m thinking to
This isnt even irrefutable. Its exactly why they do it.
@@JaddyOG it may be shady but it’s marketing. I know lots of stores does it
Bingo. And it is NOT a new or original tactic either.
@@RectWizard on a side note isn't that illegal?
I bought a black japanese PS2 slim with 1 controller on eBay for 70$. I am absolutely baffled that they would mark the price up to 210$ 💀.
Yeah it's wild. I recently got a silver slim, not jap so a little more expensive than 70, but no where near dko price. I couldn't believe they had it so much
Always shop at ebay to get a better deal. The Wii’s they are selling is just awful.
They should actually be giving this stuff away for free. Why should we pay for them to ship stuff to us? What a scam.
@@SoulforSale 🤣 right the irony of wanting something that someone else has and they give you a price, and you dont have to buy it, but someone wil which is why they are in business
I bought a N64 with 2 controllers and Mario 64 and Mario kart. It all costed way less than DK is selling it for.
This guy seems so relaxed. It's like a dad telling a story to a kid. Keep up the good work 👍
Thank you so much 😊
Never purchased from them and don't think I ever will due to their prices.
I would stay away it seems that they are targeting the normie and not the collector.
that is a robbery wow
Did you tell your friend what a buffoon he is?
@@SoulforSale honestly he games but he isn’t that deep to know and it was such a kind gesture I told him in the nicest way possible lol

Thank you for watching dude I really appreciate it 🙏😊
They're quite a bit more than just 10 extra dollars all around 😆
So you paid $100 for Mario RPG? That's about $10 more than it's worth.
@@leemires5315 worse actually, I think it was like 105$
@@thecawdfather87 yea, the games I got were definitely more expensive than eBay.
I use price charting as well. Good website.
price charting 100% accurate lol
@@Viciouspiked I’ve noticed that sometimes the prices are a little lower than they sell for on eBay. Also, sometimes they account for a “cib” sale that isn’t fully complete in box. Little things like that. Overall it is very accurate though.
Not gonna lie I love their shorts and videos too. It makes me want to buy from them. Fortunately I'm not a robot and there's no way in hell I'm spending that much.
Dam get your bread up
When I went to DK Oldies website, my jaw dropped when I saw the Wii console price. And then again when I saw the PS2 price. These are some of the best selling consoles of all time no reason they should be that price.
For the price of Wii on DKoldies you can buy a "soft-modded" Wii from Etsy with thousands of games on FFS ☠️

Tripling the going rate is not compensating for overhead. It’s robbery.
Double jump video games has a fair online store. They have a youtube channel as well so you know when a new item on the store comes in.
Free shipping for over 10 dollars, but higher prices than normal market. If they are making those prices that high just to pay their workers or business operating cost, than it sounds like they need some restructuring among staff or budget what they are spending.
Why do they even pay people?
So you don't want them paying their employees well? Or you want them to overwork just a few employees?
Why use one parentheses? Why even punctuate at all?
As a former employee of that place save your money and go some where else. You will have better lucky and experience on ebay or Amazon or garage sales
Joey seems passionate enough and that's quite admirable. However the price is quite high, it's outside of my price range for sure.
They sell stuff for more then my Local Gaming Stores who have brick and morter stores and it makes them look unreasonably expensive
He read it and then says multiple times "plus shipping". Great research job
Thanks Rect, I'm a fan buy yes gotta be careful. So far they are 5/5 with me on doing a great job on my orders!
Which is completely unacceptable for the quality to be all over the place when their prices are the one consistency. And thats sky high
Greatest hits is usually less sought after. They are way easier to find than the original copy but it could be different for that specific game
Very well said. Their overheads must be a killer, but they clearly take advantage of their market positioning.
I have to agree that some prices are more, I've bought from them only when my local stores did not have the game I was looking for, I think this video is a must for anyone who wants to buy from Dkoldies to make them an educated buyer.
I work at a local store and when they do the “original price” that’s always full retail price. Many things that to the average person seems scummy is an actual legit business practice even stores do
We don’t want a used fucking item be full priced if it has been used by someone else. You’re being SCAMMED if you mark it its original price.
I think everyone above the age of 12 knows this😂 isn’t the point though is it really😂 it’s still scummy, don’t matter if Walmart is doing it or some random Joe
I agree with your evaluation. I did get a nice NES there as they had good prices for that. N64 prices are a rip off.
Just bought an snes for $100, came with DK country, and 4 other games
Rich @ ReviewTechUSA would like to differ on whether you’re a scam or not.
A warranty? Youd have to buy 5 non working SNESs in a row, at $50 locally, to make paying $260 to DK oldies make sense. They dont break that often and a couple minutes of cleaning is all they need. Selling items at market, not 200-300% of market, already covers overhead & profit.
Does disk only means no case? This was a great video. I'm confused about Mercari I thought you had to meet people in person?
The warranty doesn’t always work tho they refused to take someone’s console back because they didn’t see anything wrong when shipping it
glad you mention why there prices might be high. but you can find it locally maybe cheaper depends of course. other than that, the power is the hands of the consumer.
Great video, honestly as someone who collects retro games I understand what service they offer I think the controversy is over blown. I’ve only used them once and the quality was good enough but I knew I was paying extra. I usually purchase from eBay or conventions
Everyone should just go to conventions. Using websites to buy video games is so old fashioned.

Glad youre happy but yeah, dont sleep on that 🤣
You bought something and wouldnt been able to use it for like a month because of a poor QA dept, that's a huge strike.
Yea but did you pay extra for it to be refurbished for the extra $60? If you are paying over $100+ over market value for an old console, Refurbishment should be the standard, not jus an add-on.

They are definitely pricey. I will say it’s better to look at recently sold listing on eBay to get accurate current pricing rather than Price chart. Price chart averages sometimes from years of sales which won’t give a actuate current number. Many CIB and loose sales are not in the right section on price chart which gives wrong numbers as well
10:21 I wish more people would bring this up. Buying a retro console with a warranty is super important.
Here in Texas the n64 with 1 controller at every where unless it's at the flea market is about 150 out the door
I think they have an online store, with prices, which people can choose to pay or not pay.
I bought a mario/duck hunt nes game on ebay, had no idea it was theirs. Contacts were literally black, also cracked. So much for their “cleaning”
Can you recommend any retro stores in the Northern California valley area (Stockton etc)?
Absolutely checkout WartornFront in Manteca California 😊
@@RectWizard Roger that
They overcharge, and what you get, from my understanding, is usually some generic third-party controller.
When people forget eBay and Amazon exist
@@therealjaystone2344 honestly Amazon is terrible to use for buying retro games.
Personally I say don't shop on Amazon for anything, but that's just me.
Retro stuff usually goes for more on Amazon, nobody complains about them. Also, the discount thing has been used by retailers for years, its been proven that people like to feel like they are getting a deal.
That's because it's third parties selling through Amazon not actually Amazon themselves
like unfortunately a good used game store knows that their stuff is just for certain people but the ones i seen nearby price guage to the max. A loose disc might run you $50 for a Wii game that is first party and $30 for third party that might be bad
the price changes sometimes once you click on it. Like for example mario kart 64 said $49.99 then when you clicked it was $74.99.... sketchy shit. 21:44
also from my experience, they dont update prices with pricecharting when it's out of stock.
I agree 100% great info 😊
I agree with the business aspect that they have overhead. I do think that with the lowest price they have they should discount it by 10% if possible.
They “refurbish” old consoles without refreshing the thermal past that like 80% of refurbishing an old console.
i will say i am local to dk oldies i actually sell to them and know a good bit about what they have going on there i stopped selling on ebay because what they were paying made no sense for me to sell on ebay after fees and shipping it makes sense for me to sell there plus me being local i just go there give them what i got and they come out with a price and check right then and there and i know they have alot of employees there building is very large and just so everyone knows they get sent a full fedex truck a day with people selling them stuff so i can only imagine how much money they put out everyday and really its FREE SHIPPING over 10 dollars and plus a 120 day warranty and i even talked to the owner for close to a hour a few months ago super cool guy and yes i am not saying i am going to buy stuff from them wouldnt make sense since i am always game hunting yes you can go on mulitple sites and find stuff cheaper but mercari you get 3 days to test if it stops working after you leave feeback then you just spent 110 just my point of view i guess cool video though
They go for that “local” store feel but they’re the furthest thing from it ..
They’re aiming for the first time buyer who doesn’t know any better ..
I have lost a lot of weight 😊 I had gastric sleeve surgery back in July and from December 2021 to now I went from 380lbs now I’m 214lbs 😊 thank you for noticing makes me feel really good 😊
I remember the good old days when you could pick up a N64 for $30 dollars at the flea market
It feels like all the consoles they just price it out and add a fat 100$ extra on. And the games seems to get marked up by 25-30$
They are trying to take as many trade ins as possible for nothing to turn around and flip it for allot. I can see DK oldies try take the market by buying all the retro games and when everything has been sold you have no choice but to buy from them in about 10 years
I've been trying to tell people this for like the last 2 or 3 years
As a previous customer of theirs I’d say they skirt the edge of scam but never reach that point. Truth be told DK Oldies is clearly just the latest hate trend 🤷♂️
All of this publicity is definitely a double-edged sword for them.
I got a complete copy of Castlevania SOTN (greatest hits version) for $2 at a Goodwill
Is their social media marketing really that good
what it is if you want a perfect condition one your going to pay that or you pay the discounted price for a cosmetically flawed system and game
Ah man, the Oblivion music alone earned you a like 👍
Remember when Joey’s face wasn’t on their website? Good times.
Remember some of those are loose. Those "are not bad" complete no, but just cartridge yes. Also almost all consoles are garanteed to have second party controllers, you have to pay more to get original ones.
So I can tell you right now I used to go to DK Oldies site back 4 or 5 years ago and I can tell you Those slashed prices have been the same since then
Some of their consoles don't work my friend bought a Xbox 360. and it wouldn't even turn on. and he paid over $145 for it not including shipping. so you can't guarantee you're going to get a product that actually works
to call them a scam, implies that they're lying about what they're selling you. to a degree they are because theyre saying refurbished etc, and after many other youtubers have shown, thats not the case as its filled with dust, original thermal paste etc. as for the price they're selling it at, its up to the buyer. if someone wants to pay 400 bux for a gamecube thats on them. I just wish i had the reach they have with their customers that they can charge 400 bux for something that can be had for
Its a overreaction i agree. DKOldies gotta pay staff, Ebayers are usually by themselves.
I missed the part where DKoldies is forcing anybody to buy from them verse the hundreds of other sources one could by games from. If people are willing to pay their expensive prices then why wouldn't they charge those prices?
