I cannot believe that I actually had to search a video on how to change the blade. I feel like a complete idiot until I watched your video I've had this thing for quite a while and could never figure out how to change the blade. I was actually pulling the screws out and taking it all apart to change the blade. LMAO 🤣🤣
I got this today and I'm taking it back tomorrow. I don't think I should have to lube it or take it apart and fiddle with it to make the slide mechanism work. It was relatively expensive (I'm sure I'd have had no problems with a $7 knife) and I've got a big project coming up that will require near constant use of a knife. I just got this one because of the comfortable feel in my hand. Maybe this is a sign that I should've looked harder to find one of the two I misplaced in cleaning and organizing my shop area instead of taking the easy way out and buying a new one. I love DeWalt, but this was a big disappointment.
Just purchased this exact product today. It needed a little work, but it works perfectly fine after using a little patience and elbow grease to work it. I was skeptical at first as well while having trouble. Works fine now. Thanks for the video.
HOW TO INSERT & REMOVE STUBBORN BLADES: A major number of negative reviews, and comments pertain to the seeming inability to insert & remove blades. This is due to Dewalt's inadequate blade insertion instructions, and not due to a faulty blade insertion/ removal mechanism. However Dewalt needs a less tricky more user friendly mechanism. Ease of Blade insertion and removal is "tricky" not difficult, or impossible once mastered, as follows: BLADE INSERTION: 1. Move the blade slider to full forward as if you were extending a blade to its fully extended position. This fully extended position of that blade slider is needed both to remove, & to insert a blade. 2. Initially Insert the blade tip at a 45° angle to the top of the blade cavity (not the flat side, but the top of the blade cavity) until insertion stops at about 1/4 of the way in. Be sure the flat of the blade is not inserted at any angle to the flat of the blade cavity, which it will do easily. Unless and until the flat of the blade is exactly lined up with the flat of the blade cavity you will not be able to proceed to steps 3. thru 5. below. 3. Straighten the top of the blade from its initial 45° angle to the top of the blade cavity in step 2 above, to instead where the top of the blade is totally parallel to the top of the blade cavity. I emphasize the word totally here. This is the tricky part. By totally parallel above I mean so the top of the blade is pressed against the top of the blade cavity totally. The blade will then slide further into the cavity to where only the last of the two notches atop the blade is yet visible. 4. Press the blade release button hard while executing step 5 below. Note: This blade release button does not have to be pressed until step 5. below. 5. While being sure the top of the blade is still totally against the top of the blade cavity ( this is the tricky part per step 3. above). Then in that event with the blade release button pressed hard, per step 4. above, the blade should then easily glide completely into the blade cavity, and lock in place. Wallah! BLADE REMOVAL: 1. Fully extend the blade.. 2. Press the blade release button hard while executing step 3. below. An even harder press of the blade release button may be needed to release the blade than the hard press of it needed for blade insertion. Ridiculously hard! 3. Be sure the top of the blade is pressed against the top of the blade cavity, whereby with the blade release button pressed extremely hard the blade should then remove easily. Note: If the blade does not then remove easily then in that event: A. Again be sure the top of the blade is pressed against the top of the blade cavity. B. And/ or a little gentle jiggling. C. And or a relaxing, and repressing ( again very hard) of the blade release button may be needed. Wallah!
There are more surface tension on newer blades. I usually lube all my new blades before putting some new batches in the storage compartment and it helps with rusting and also easier(well I think it is) for the quick release to work.
I think most people having trouble with the release is they are pushing the tab or button down. If you actually take a close look at the button, it is actually a lever that rotates however slightly, but makes a big difference when it comes to the release of the blade.
Mr Bailly, thank you for you video. As I worked with you to remove the difficult blade, I found that pulling back on the blade toward the trigger makes removal easier.
Forgot how to open it and had trouble getting the blade to hook in as it will, so by moving around the sliding part back and forth was able to get the blade to lock in blade thank you.
Its super easy and i just love it! I bought one for my twin sister and one for her hubby... and of course, one for me. I dont need to lube it or play with it. Slide the blade out, like youre going to use it. Now holding it in your right hand, with your right thumb push the black tab down (follow imprinted arrow.) Once depressed, with your left hand remove the blade, switch it around to use to reverse side or put in a new blade. Easy sneazy!!😊😊
thank you so much. I just bought one of these. My brother had to install the blade for me. I like it because of the easy clip on for my tool belt. Great Little knife. We did however have the same issues that you mentioned here. I appreciate the video. I'm keeping mine. It's a solid, heavy duty piece of equipment.
I couldn’t get my blade to release at all. Had it fully out and the quick release lever fully engaged. Even tried using pliers to grip the blade to try and pull it out (partly so I wouldn’t slice my finger open). Nothing worked, but I then put a tiny bit of wd40 under the slider, on the blade, on the quick release lever, and even in the little cutting slot at the bottom for good measure. Once that was all done and I moved the blade back and forth with the slider a few times the blade pulled out with almost no effort at all. I realized that I haven’t changed the blade in forever and probably just a little seized up in there. Blade also had a little rust on it too. Works great now so I hope this helps someone else!
It is strongly recommended that by the index finger is not the thumb, because the index finger is more suitable for pressing it down, and the thumb is very awkward!
I have exactly the same problem. Do they get their stuff made in China? Have noticed a decline in the quality of Dewalt tools over the last few years. The deWalt battery drill I got going on fifteen years ago is still going well, Though I now run it on a 12v gel cell as can't get batteries.
Issues with pivot post of release lever free play. May help to operate with lever towards bottom for gravity to settle lever on pin. Also Gun oil lets them work smoothly. The type with button over blade reduce linkage possible error. However they are overall very fine knifes both folder and solid design. Mine was being a bit sticky to change blade after years of use but with a good soap and water wash then oiling it works as new. Easy one hand folder operating. Also the auto load of new blades is amazing feature. Three reserve blades pop out as needed in an instant for razor sharp cuts. Also be sure blade is extended to full out position. Then lever can operate release phase properly. Oil also helps in anti rust of stored in handle blades as well as smoothing mechanical mechanisms. If having issues may return to store. Most likely they would replace free of charge.
Just bought one of these but I think it's a slightly newer model. Would not take the new blade until I watched this and just fiddled with the release and the sliding thing for a while, trying various ways of pushing and sliding lol Finally works now
Had the same issues with this knife ....... There's no way I would be playing around with the blade numerous times given the obvious risks ......most I ever paid for one and its the worst I had .
Hi there Justin, I bought one of these today from Screwfix. I've not had any trouble with removing/replacing the blade but had problem retracting the blade (new). So I took the blade out and stuck it in the other way round and it flippin' worked. Weird. thanks for the video though.
I had the same issues! And it comes with friggin directions! I had to watch a RUclips video and fiddle with it for 10 mins to finally get the new blade in. I wasn’t even sure if it already had a blade in it.
I had an issue with mine where it would not release the blade. The quick release was loose. I removed the 2 screws on the side, and the quick release tightened back up by itself randomly, so i just replaced the screws without taking the blade apart. It's back to normal again. 🤷♂️
I had the same issue after using it for cutting drywall. I couldn’t easily change the blade and it was difficult to advance or retract the blade. I sprayed WD40 on it and it was good as new.
This video helped me get that new blade in after a couple of tries, thanks for reminding me to be patient and perservere.....I'd say that's a pretty good life lession as well 😉
To Install the blade just push the blade in with the thumb mechanism fully extended out, it's very simple. DO NOT press the quick release to insert the blade it won't work. Press the quick release to release the blade. If you try to insert the blade while press down on the quick release it will jam.
Mine worked great for about 6 mos. NOW the blade just falls out! The slide-retract thumb control doesn't function. The quick release is also not functioning. It took a smallish mallet to it...nothing. Now I took apart to see if something feel inside it. Took the two Allen nuts off and i cannot figure how to reassemble. There is a canter levertype of part with a spring. So any help would be appreciated instead of a bitch session like here
I have the same knife, and I can no longer change the blade without taking it apart. It retracts, the guts are intact, the new blade inserts but then cannot be removed. I've taken it apart several times but cannot find the flaw.
Felt like I needed special training for something that should be ridiculously simple. I had one before and was able to insert and change out the blade. This was way too challenging.
We like DeWalt products and use a bunch of them in our home but if I had to do it again, I would not buy the DeWalt retractable knife. Sorry DeWalt. Thank you Justin!
My boyfriend bought me this knife 2 years ago and it was great but recently someone stole it so he got me a new one yesterday and I’m having problems with it, I fed it a blade and can’t get it out
It is strongly recommended that by the index finger is not the thumb, because the index finger is more suitable for pressing it down, and the thumb is very awkward!
I HAVE THE SAME ,, BLADE RELEASE ISSUE... AS THE GENTGELMAN IN VIDEO,,, I DO NOT THINK DEPOT WILL TAKE IT BACK...BUT FOR 20 BUCKS.. I EXPECT BETTER... AND A DEWALT NO LESS..
It seems the quick release level doesn't have a retention screw/plate to help keep the lever in place. If the lever pops off it's internal pivot pin, that's when it stops working. See video. ruclips.net/video/YL3vXiMoJig/видео.html
Why should I "give it a bit of time" when the product is supposed to work from the start. What kind of "quick release" is that. And the quick release lever itself. Could they make it any harder to get a hold of? Terrible product. The slide on ours also doesn't slide. It's junk that skates by because it says DeWalt.
Ours didn't have a bottom. When you went to open the case where the extra blades are stored, it opens fine, but there's no "bottom." The blades have nothing to stay in.
1. Push the upper button forward to the end. 2. Press the small black iron piece to the end with the index finger instead of the thumb(or the thumb of the other hand), so that it is easy to replace the blade. It is strongly recommended that by the index finger is not the thumb, because of this small button you have to press it down fully to remove the blade, so the index finger is more suitable for pressing it down, and the thumb is very awkward!
I purchased DWHT10319, it is indeed a junk product. 1. The push button is very stuck, it is difficult to advance and retract, and it is very low, you will worry about being scratched by the card slot when pushing. 2. The plastic shell is not fixed, so it is very loose. This is a junk product, don't buy it.
I just purchased this knife, and right from the start, I can’t retract it and the blade is really hard to insert. Now that the blade is finally in, but I can’t retract it. DO NOT PURCHASE IT.
Had to take mine COMPLETELY APART. Thank goodness I had a star shaped bit for my screwdriver, cause with the Dewalt retractable knife model 10046 that's what you're gonna need... smh Then & only then could I get the blade out and I was even using matching Dewalt blades. Sorry suckazz tool almost got thrown into a wall. 😡 Good news is, once i took it apart & put it back together it worked. Go figure. Don't know why, it's not like I put it together any better or differently than it came new out the box. smh
What a piece of junk. The blade either comes out after cutting something or won't come out when you want to change it. Straight garbage. Best knives I've found are Lutz, if you can find them. This thing is dangerous.
Personally, I'm done with this laughable pieces of crap. I'm going back to the "old fashioned" yet painfully reliable "clam shell" design. It's more than worth having to take a few minutes to unscrew the body to replace the blade then having to worry if the blade is going to randomly just get joinked out the front when cutting something dense like shingles. These knives suck!
Really avoid this product. I bought one. You should not be jumping though hoops just to change a blade on a knife. What a load of rubbish. Avoid at all cost.
This Dewalt knife and the foldable quick release knife are some of Dewalt's failures. Simple as that. Not knocking Dewalt, but their utility knives leave a lot to be desired.
I have a box cutter but the blade won’t go all the way down when you put it down idk why but then when you push the thing up the blade jumps out of the box cutter also the blades super lose in the box cutter

Same problem. The replacement blades I had bought were their carbide 10X ones. Maybe they're slightly thicker in the body.
Hmmmm, I need to purchase some blades soon, it'll be interesting to see how different blades perform.
Thanks for the video. I was finally able to put my new blade in.
Wow! And I thought you were going to show us how to correct the problem... I have had such an issue that I've stopped using it.

I keep mine lubed up with Dry Silicone..... Works like a charm.... On the Inside not outside or Handle... Thank You
Thanks was having trouble getting new blade in, got it 👍
Thank you! Great video, very helpful!
Thank you so much this really did help
Thank you! You helped me immensely ❤️

I had the same issue after using it for cutting drywall. I couldn’t easily change the blade and it was difficult to advance or retract the blade. I sprayed WD40 on it and it was good as new.
I noticed with this one... you gotta practice with it! 🙂

To Install the blade just push the blade in with the thumb mechanism fully extended out, it's very simple. DO NOT press the quick release to insert the blade it won't work. Press the quick release to release the blade. If you try to insert the blade while press down on the quick release it will jam.
When you loaded the blade you didn’t put it all the way in, only 85%. That’s why it didn’t release. We call the armatures error.
If pulling the blade makes you frightened, 😉 use a pliers. Scheesh.
Tells how to do very good 😊

You have to start watching a video like this to get it to work!
I used wd40 for the slide. Worked perfect
I have the same knife, and I can no longer change the blade without taking it apart. It retracts, the guts are intact, the new blade inserts but then cannot be removed. I've taken it apart several times but cannot find the flaw.
The dewalt blades that came with mine wouldn’t go in all the way. Other Stanley blades that I had worked perfectly.
I bought 2 of those and both have the same problem.
My boyfriend bought me this knife 2 years ago and it was great but recently someone stole it so he got me a new one yesterday and I’m having problems with it, I fed it a blade and can’t get it out
The one I bought was broken right out of the box. the blade won't retract at all.
Just watched because I had the same problem. The fix was WD-40. Simple
I got one and the blade doesn't come out not even fiddling with it 😒, Dewalt dropped the ball on this one.
That is an old model, the one I bought today is different,
It seems the quick release level doesn't have a retention screw/plate to help keep the lever in place. If the lever pops off it's internal pivot pin, that's when it stops working. See video. ruclips.net/video/YL3vXiMoJig/видео.html

Could they make it any harder to get a hold of? Terrible product. The slide on ours also doesn't slide. It's junk that skates by because it says DeWalt.
Some of the knives lack important parts which make the knife a big issue
Ours didn't have a bottom. When you went to open the case where the extra blades are stored, it opens fine, but there's no "bottom." The blades have nothing to stay in.
Put some WD-40 in there and break it in it'll work perfectly same thing happened to one of mine once it's broken now it's the best one I own
Mine lock then all the sudden the blade falls out
1. Push the upper button forward to the end.
2. Press the small black iron piece to the end with the index finger instead of the thumb(or the thumb of the other hand), so that it is easy to replace the blade.

Do yourself a favor, don’t consider buying one of their knives. I have different model- same issues. Terrible . Don’t do it.
😪😩Already bought one tonight!
Bought a new knife, lasted a day. Now all buttons are stuck. Will take it back. This video was no help.
I just purchased this knife, and right from the start, I can’t retract it and the blade is really hard to insert. Now that the blade is finally in, but I can’t retract it. DO NOT PURCHASE IT.
sucks buying something that does not work right 100% of the time...
wd40-not hard is it
Had to take mine COMPLETELY APART. Go figure. Don't know why, it's not like I put it together any better or differently than it came new out the box. smh
This thing is a piece of crap they should just stick with the old and trusted tried way always trying to reinvent the wheel
Terrible Knife ! Hard to install blade. Very dangerous when you struggle with blade installation.
Incredibly dangerous knife, so disappointed with my purchase
my has also jammed up and I cant. shut it
I will return and buy the old ones. need my fingers!!
He’s yummy!
esa navaja es una estupides
A piece of junk.. had all the problems discribed by others.. returned to HD for refund.
This Dewalt knife and the foldable quick release knife are some of Dewalt's failures. Simple as that. Not knocking Dewalt, but their utility knives leave a lot to be desired.
Storage for more blades?
😂😂😂😂😂😂I’m dumb I got it just checked top😂
I have a box cutter but the blade won’t go all the way down when you put it down idk why but then when you push the thing up the blade jumps out of the box cutter also the blades super lose in the box cutter
