- PRR K4s Pacific #1361 enters Tyrone, PA.....probably the first steam engine to pass through the town in 30 years since the PRR ended steam operations in 1957.
Footage is from "K4! Pennsylvania 1361" by Mark I Video.

What a beautiful, mournful whistle--tuned to a minor triad. Perfect for the gray, gloomy day. That sound inspired a thousand folk songs.
Yeah. It's an iconic sound isn't it? - even for someone who doesn't live in the US 👍
That my friend, is the sound of the Broadway Limited.
Amazing Steam Engine, it is said as the ghost of beauty, the whistle is just amazing, imagine hearing that at night!
It would be haunting to hear this whistle in the middle of the night
Oh dw you get used to the sound after a few months
Such a beautiful example of a steam locomotive and a true shame that this engine only operated for 1 year of service before experiencing severe maintenance issues. PRR engine 1361 deserves another chance at an operating life, I wouldn't mind seeing this locomotive return to operation at some point during the future.
I like when the tracks run down the middle of the street.
I visited this same scene today at Tyrone. Quaint little town. I enjoyed the visit. I valued hear the sound in my mind.
I may be a categorically insane railfan, but I still wish I knew more when it came to whistles. I know that certain locomotives have a distinctive whistle that makes them easily identifiable, but I don't know much besides that.
Who knows.Maybe in a few years; this scene will repeat again.
This train came off the main line down by the A & P food store. Then up Rail Road Street over the Pig Hole Underpass. Right past the house where we lived as kids back in the early 60's. Trains used to go down the Bald Eagle Valley Rail Road every day back then. We used to put penny's on the rails & the trains used to squish them. Those were the days. The Pennsylvania Rail Road main line used to have all those smoky trains bellowing smoke for miles. Great Memories to see this one.
If you count passing by on the main line, technically RDG 2101/AFT 1, GTW 4070, & RDG 2102 all passed thru before this. 2102 was the most recent (and was the last steam locomotive to pass 1361 when she was still on display at Horseshoe Curve).
Anyone asking what's up with 1361 can feel free to come visit the roundhouse on Thursdays after 3 pm. A small, dedicated group of people are working to put her back on the rails and grind the mistakes of the past to dust. No shortcuts, no BS, only 205 MAWP and full operation. They'd be happy to answer questions in person.
Thanks for the footage! It was a day that I'll always remember. My dad ( a railroader ) and I had a great day together...
Beautiful
@kd7tqn That's because the ashton and the pennsy whistles both sound the same minor chord...but in this vid, the whistle has that throaty/raspy sound that's uniquely pennsy.
Man that was awesome!!
1:18 2:47 Sounds very ghostly but beautiful!
Oh damn! I think I've left my washing out!
very cool footage, thank you for sharing..
What a beauty !
You may be interested to know that over here in th U.K. a group of enthusiasts spent over 18 years raising the money to build a brand new (yes, brand new!) steam loco from scratch. It is an A1 Class Peppercorn Pacific and was finally completed last year. you can see footage of its first fare paying passenger run on RUclips at this link: watch?v=qkkARP7PVVc
Totally awesome!
Imagine a gathering with LIRR 39, PRR 1361 and 5550 is possible!
Ahhh, Tyrone. The same place where the movie unstoppable is and played as Arklow, PA.
Beautiful sounding whistle
I swear I've heard 1361's whistle sound on a Cass Shay. Hopefully, I'll hear and see 1361 run again in my lifetime...
probably the same type of whistle
If Norfolk Southern was to help with 1361's restoration, that would be very cool.
that'll be nice
@John McCardell I'm past the point of hope with the 1361. I seen it in June of 87'. It's been over 30+ years and seems it's just going to stay gone.
@@LionWithTheLamb Slowly but surely the rebuild is happening
Amazing whistle
1361 is being restored right now!
they filmed part of Unstoppable here
No wonder why the scenery looked familiar.

The sound of the Broadway Limited.
Awesome video. 5***** and favorite.
The whole thing is going to eventually become new!!!!
New boiler due to FRA guidelines AND insurance policies with FRA requirements. Again choices were replace the firebox and reduce pressure OR reboiler the whole steam locomotive with full pressure. That’s what i heard
Nice vid
1361 pass through the town.
Nice surprise Conrail 10 at the end.
at 4:06 is that the headlight of anther train in the distance ? i know tyrone very well and know that the mian line is back there but is out of veiw.
Why there’s a daylight tool/Baggage car?
Picked it up used somewhere, I'm sure, and it hasn't been repainted.
This is in April of 1987
Oh, I must have forgot 10 while adding. Thanks
That would be something to see, considering that the only other surviving K4 (at least to my knowledge), #3750, is on static display at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. I'm not sure if they could do it right now, though, since they're busy cosmetically restoring PRR Atlantic #460, known to most railfans as the engine which pulled the Lindbergh Special.
Stussmeister it is being restored slowly, it needs boiler and firebox patches, and a new crown sheet
I believe 1361 is the only survivor built by the PRR. Some were made by Baldwin.
@@1940limited I wasn't aware of that, thank you for letting me know.
very nice, when was this?
Pennsy 3 chime..
Why was the engine put out of service? Did something bad happen like a firebox explosion, similar to the fate of 1278?
And to think I've seen a UP Big Boy restored to operation before anyone did anything further with this...
It all gets down to money. UP has the resources.
The PRR K4s is the official state steam locomotive of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Why is she being allowed to languish?
Send her to the New Hope & Ivyland for her rebuild!
All it takes is money.
I am the might Pennsylvania Railroad...hear me roar!
It's actually not Steamtown that's the problem....they were just letting the Altoona Railroaders Museum work on the engine in their facilities. They never took any active role in helping to restore her, as far as I know.
@dcoursey82
sounds an awful lot like an ashton 3 chime
I remember the Vail bridge. My Friend Fred Wagner liver out there in Bald Eagle. The Hamilton family lived in the White house by the tracks. Both the bridge and the house are gone now. We used to go out to Reese's Sale Barn & store down the valley when I was a kid. Good Memories.
Awesome! 5*****!
I think it would be awesome if 611 and 1361 doublehead together one day!
It's all about 2102 these days! :-)
i hope that 1461s NEW boiler is here soon ):l
I would love to see the K4 in opperation u got the funding so what's going on
Amanda Ferguson I've seen the 1361 running when it was in york Pennsylvania in August of 1988
Being restored right now actually.
Can I use this footage please?
1361: I'll be back!
That reminds of Hank from Thomas And Friends!
the steam oozing from the steam generator is a foreteller of the troubles with it on the move to York PA.... generator gives up..lol
The steam from the Generator is it's exhaust; do you mean the turbo-generator? are you calling the boiler a steam generator? be more specific
What is that one car 0:24 It looked like SP Daylight paint.
It’s a combination car, which is a baggage car and coach, combined to one car.
Sad that happened to that Engine. Is there any new news on Her ?
There will be an upcoming restoration update from the Railroaders Memorial Museum, visit their website for the latest updates. www.railroadcity.org/
Why does this look familiar…
Date? What's the status of this locomotive today?
@@facel2 Thank you.
Thank you for what?
what whistle is she wearing?
That’s a 3 chime, not a 6 chime. Santa Fe #3415 (for example) has a 6 chime, while PRR #1361 (shown here) does not.
how much money does 1361 need for her to operate 1.5 to 3 million?
It took 2.4 million to restore 2102.
1361: IMA BAK BITCHES!!!!
Im guessing 1987 was a big year for 1361?
TrainMan5632 probably the only year 1361 was operational never mind her real career with the PRR
TrainMan5632 probably the only year 1361 was operational never mind her real career with the PRR
It was in fact. But it was also the end all too quickly. Poor girl had technical trouble, and those faults were the cause of her break down and restoration process. To think only it took now for her to get some progress in.

What year?
1987
That's what I was saying.
What year was this? 1980?
+robison87 April 1987
1987.
@@dcoursey82 Thank you!
@@1940limited Thank you! The year I was born lol.
Wow, how many carbon credits would that cost ya?
I wonder, who all skipped work or school on this day?
Dont forget that steamtown is government run. If its not theirs then they wont work on it. I believe originally it was to be a "combined" effort. But the scope of the project changed somewhere. Im waitin on the #40 and the #3713.
im sorry 1361 new boiler is here soon ):l
why does this thing have Daylight coaches
The Daylight baggage car is named "Yes Dear" and belongs to Doyle McCormick of SP4449 game. He probably helped out with the 1362 restoration.
Fame not Game!
