The project is starting to show signs of life again. Stall 4 in the ARMM roundhouse is currently occupied by her tender and a Norfolk Southern flat car bearing the boiler (until new waist sheet bolts are fabricated). Anyone who claims she needs an entire new boiler is talking out of their ass--the smokebox is new, the barrel is good (all reading are well over 0.900" of the original 1.000"). Only the roof sheet needs re-assesed and replaced (and a matching crownsheet) for 205 MAWP. Last week (10/15/2015) the crew was starting to finalize the ashpan and grate assembly. They're currently working with whatever's on hand, moving parts with nothing more than a pallet jack...they're working to change the board's attitude while making a little progress. In the mean time, while the museum itself remains silent, the best source for info is facebook.com/fansofprr1361. Just leave the negativity at the door.
You might think that, but its pure insurance policies for 1361. Ive heard from FRA or speculations at least, that there were only 2 solutions, replace the firebox sheets and reduce the boiler pressure, or operate at full pressure with a brand new boiler firebox and smoke box. That’s what i remember hearing from Altoona
@HaloCE14 I'm with ya! I take #3751 for granted that it hasn't been taken out of operation like some of the eastern steamers. I hope #1361 steams again in the future for all the great folks of Pennsylvania!
New boiler, firebox, etc whatever. Boiled down to rank amatuers with huge egos playing with trains who wasted many thousands of dollars. 1361 is in the hands of professionals now who know what they are doing.
do you have the full program at all? i was wondering as ive been trying to track down a copy of the full program for 2 months now. thanks in advance-Joseph
I like looking through the comments and seeing all the reply comments in separate threads because they where made before the update that had direct reply added XD
Our R.R. owns a narrowguage 0-4-0 in need of a new boiler, to replace it will cost us roughly $80,000. Imagine how much it will cost for a standard guage locomotive with a boiler the size of a semi trailer (or maybe bigger).
If they don't restore 1361 to operation, they'll probably have to deal with a railfan riot. Hopefully, what I read in the Altoona Mirror is true, that Salone has a new plan.
Did you know that the RDC budd car behind 1361 was damaged severely after this run. When Budd designed the RDC, they never untended them to be pulled in a normal train as was this case in 1987.
dude they wasted millions of taxpayer's money in the form of state grants on this thing. To beg for another 3 to 4 million just for a new boiler alone would go over as fast as a lead balloon. It is never going to run again. You have to know where the parts are in the first place. Then as soon as stuff breaks like it did the last time it'll be a statue again.
Salone and his buddies ran restaurants out of business what makes you think they can rebuild a locomotive? They have concerts and use none of the profits towards restoration. It is never going to happen. The boiler is at East Broad Top RR in the car shops. Why? Because the Altoona RR museum has not the money to pay the EBT for storage fees it owes. So it sits there collecting bills doing nothing. Joke joke joke. Just like Altoona.
I wonder how many people got to see this beautiful engine on this day. Almost forty years ago.
can't wait to see and hopefully ride the " new K4" in the future.
1361 is a beauty. Music to my ears. Thanks for sharing 👍 go PRR!!
Yes it is
She looked beautiful!
Indeed she is

Why does it have a conrail car on its consist
If they can get #1361 back in operation, it would be neat to see her on the Cape May NJ line as k4s were seen on that line during the fifties!
I live in Long Branch & they used to pass my house every day.
An inspiring beauty.
Unfortunately no, she's still awaiting full restoration as we speak. BTW Thanks for sharing the old footage dcoursey82

Brian Liesberg imagine bigboys boiler
Pennsylvania K4s 4-6-2 Pacific 1361 was pulling the first excursion for the Norfolk Southern.🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃
1361 never pulled any Norfolk Southern excursions. You need to do some research before you speak of such things.
@PereMarquette1223 agreed but what will 3750s future be like though

Yup it was the main bearing and there was axel damage

TMCCCab2 what damage was done??
she needs a new boiler plus tender and smokebox. there's no more life to the original boiler. it's shot clean!!
Strasburg1991 It would be awesome to see LIRR 39 and PRR 1361 double head an excursion.
Is this where Williams got their whistle for the 4-6-0? It sounds exactly like this whistle.
No it's from nkp 765
1361 looks like Hank from Thomas & Friends
No. Hank from Thomas & Friends looks like 1361
anyone else notice the RDC/Budd Car trailing?
Is this engine still being run? Awesome video! 5*****!
Norfolk and southern should bring this prize back alive, and join her with the "Y" the NKP, and #611.
Sounds like her original whistle with the hole in it
@Strasburg1991 She needs a lot more than that. (cough) pile of bits at the railroaders memorial museum (cough)
Off topic but can you please reupload your videos of PRR 7002 and 1223?
@modeltrainman12345 like a new air compressor, bearing boxes, firebox doors,
@xxxDeath9572xxx I did. I dont get why they did that. I love rdcs though so it is fine with me!
Where is this loco? And why is it no longer operating? ?
Awesome thank you for the information. Steam on.
is she a pre-war or post-war K4?
Chase Lakeside she was built in 1918. So it was born just shortly before or after the end of World War I, but yes she is a pre World War II K4
2:48
thats the downside to american steam... they're massive and exelent in performance, but when its time to overhaul the thing, its too big
