  • First days of K4 1361 return to steam! Many of us had seen 1361 on Horseshoe Curve and wished we could have seen her run. Well that day had finally arrived. While the video is not the greatest the whistle was awesome on that rainy day!

    From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for up loading this. I still have high hopes for 1361 to return to the high iron once more. :)

      Thankyou Richard I have more to come on 1361. I like you hope to see 1361 under steam again.

    I honestly like the sound of 1361's whistle in the beginning! It exactly sounds like the whistle on my 2001 Mth NYC 4-6-0 with proto sound 1!

    There are some good things happening to "poor old 1361" as some people like to call her now. A small crew is rebooting the project, starting with smaller parts (appliances and related systems) until the funding for that pesky roof sheet comes in.
    Give a few more years. She's coming back.

    I love PRR #1361.

    What killed her is that they used the original flues PRR put in. She was that rotted. She'll run again.. But a lot of work that should have been done back then is piled on damage from lack of caring.

      Hi Matt, actually when your starting a steam restoration back in those days you would go inside the boiler and do an inspect the boiler and tube bundle then pull a few and the FRA might grant you a flue extension. At that point your time counted whenever the engine was hot and when the engine was in storage you had out of service credit which would extend your flue time. But now a days since Gettysburg you get x amount of service time hot or cold and then you have to change the flues out period so even had they changed the flues back then it would have not made a difference now. Having to change out a driving axle was devastating and is what sidelined the engine Then it just was a slow downward spiral. Good news is she is slowly coming together now and should be in great shape when she does run.

      Sorry Matt I know that over simplifies all the problems that arose with 1361. I met most of the core members of the group and they were a very capable bunch of guys.

      Mikey Hayes strasburger475 M class because strasburg is shut down to new projects. They are expanding shop amd working on there own stuff right now. Plus who is gonna move it and pay the 50,000 to do so. Plus you need a additional 1,000,000 to cover insurance and get it all together and in away that it can be brought out safely. Then the money for the rest of it. These things are not easy nor cheap. Just cause some one can do it doesnt mean that it is possible. So if you had about 10 million and stras was open to projects then fair enough. But you dont and strasburg is busy.

      Strasburg put a bid in for the restoration in the late 90s, but Steamtown bid less, so they went with Steamtown. If they had spent the higher amount of money, Strasburg would have done it right.

    I remember being 13 years old and seeing the K4 in a hundred different pieces scattered around the shop at Steamtown. I'm 29 now and the poor thing STILL isn't operational. Why not just giver her to Strasburg to restore?

    • @jamesmccann1097
      @jamesmccann1097  8 лет назад +1

      +tachikoma747 The biggest reason is lack of money. If they sent it to Strassburg that would cost a whole lot more money. If you want to be successful operating a steam locomotive today you had better become very capable at doing a good many repairs yourself. But we can hope that some day we will see 1361 return once more!

      +tachikoma747 facebook.com/fansofprr1361/ there's stuff happening as time and resources allow. I'm 28, and to be honest, I've been watching this project since I was 3. Or earlier, since I can't remember riding the July 1987 excursion (I was there, sort of...you know what they say about early impressions...). Regardless, I've literally waited all my like to see 1361 operate again, let alone be whole. I'm willing to wait a bit longer...even throw money at it.

      It’s being restored just really slowly I hear

  • @DonCormack

    In the beginning of the video the safety valve(s) are not opening properly. The feather is “chattering” and hammering it’s seat and not achieving full lift. I never understood why this wasn’t corrected as it tends to indicate excessive back pressure or insufficient steam flow. It ran with this defect until it was sidelined in 1987.

    My dad, who passed away at the age of 94 two months ago, loved the K4. I had never seen one in action, other than in this video. It's too bad only two were saved. Is there any possibility this engine will run again?

      I do know a member of the current group and hear they are moving forward slowly. We can only hope to see her run again. Mark 1 Video was the official video company for 1361 and still has them available. I still have some more K 4 video to convert and hope to find it soon.

      Hi Mike, 1223 and 7002 did make trips to Harrisburg and Philadelphia. Just search 1223 and 7002 and some videos will come up. Mark 1 did produce a tape of the trips. I'm not sure about the others but then back in those days there were multiple main line excursions.

      That is the one and only Mr Doyle McCormick. He was brought in for the initial overhaul. That's when I first met Doyle and stayed in contact ever since.

      Joseph Ignudo When working on steam engines Doyle was always a big help. He was one of the many greats back then and still is today. I took a week off just to work with Doyle on the K4. He is the official caretaker of the Daylight. He and his crew have kept the Daylight alive for nearly 40 years. When workingh with Doyle it's a 16 hour day. I even got a better burner off Doyle for GCRY 29 when working out there.

      Hi Joseph. The whistle used on the first fireup is 1361's. Unfortunately it had been used as target practice while up on the mountain. It suffered a bullet hole and was grossly out of tune. Another K4 whistle was used on the first run.

    • @LamhirhAbriel
      @LamhirhAbriel 9 лет назад

      Joseph Ignudo James McCann The high pitched extra tone is the bullet hole, and from what Joe Musser said, it was repaired but still sounded like dying cats, and was thus traded with the Altoona Area School District, which just so happened to have one on the steam plant along 6th Ave. 1361s original is still up there and sounds fine on the lower pressure of the plant.

    • @jamesmccann1097

      The whistle on the first run was provided by Roy Price. They tried several attempts to tune 1361's whistle before they changed it.

      Eowaan Do you know my good friend Joe Musser.

      James McCann I was paraphrasing a comment Mr. Musser made on a facebook page. I've had two conversations this year with him, Andy Charlesworth, and Mike Reindl about 1361 and both its history and its future (as they're the three people that I'm aware of that are working on her right now), but aside from that, no.
      Those conversations have put my faith in those guys though. Just as they've said, the thing really isn't rocket science. (Precision yes, going to space? Nope)

    Something doesn’t seem quite right about the whistle

    • @jamesmccann1097
      @jamesmccann1097  5 лет назад +1

      War 1109 The first whistle was the original which was greatly out of tune and had been used for target practice while still up on the curve. The second whistle was owned by a group member from another K4. 1361 had used several K4 whistles after the restoration. The current whistle was traded for the original whistle.
