- On December 26, 2024, two Chinese airplane manufacturers, Chengdu and Shenyang, revealed new stealth fighter demonstrators. The designs, tailless deltas with all control surfaces in the same horizontal plane, may be among the most sophisticated manned fighters ever. This approach to fighter development mirrors how China developed its first generation of stealth fighters, where they developed both the J-20 and the J-35 as potential solutions. While the U.S. Air Force has tested a similar design, they have kept it hidden from the public. In contrast, China has proudly shown off their new designs.
These new designs could evolve into multi-role fighters, stealthy ground-attack planes, or even medium-range stealth bombers. This is significant because the Pentagon has noted that the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) is developing new medium- and long-range stealth bombers.
Experts have suggested that these new designs could be prototypes for sixth-generation fighter jets. Notably, these prototypes were flown in daylight, increasing the likelihood that this was a calculated reveal. Several countries are developing sixth-generation fighter jets, including the United States, the U.K., Italy, Japan, and Russia.
