  • I'm reviewing the Wild Irish Whistle in the key of A and what a beauty it is! I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. Full details: mcneelamusic.com/wind/whistle...
I'm playing: Cucanandy (slip jig) and Lady on the Island (reel). Excerpts from 'The Bunch of Rushes' and 'Tom Billy’s'.

Brian- Thanks so much for the beautiful playing! I own the complete line of Wild River whistles and find them amazing, soulful and clear as you do.

Thank you, Brian, for demonstrating what this Wild Irish A whistle can do. It has a tremendous range and is so clear with hardly any chiff at all. Love it!

I ordered a Wild A after seeing this review , a birthday present to myself and today, the morning of my actual birthday , there it was waiting for me on my doorstep. Like most whistle players I’ve acquired more than a few whistles but already after only a short time playing it’s already becoming one of my favourites, beautiful warm husky tone, well balanced volume between the two octaves, so easy to reach those higher notes with barely any extra breath required ( an advantage when you get to my advanced age ! ) super responsive and what a beauty to look at and hold.If she was a woman and I wasn’t already married I’d marry her tomorrow

Great compliment! I'm very happy to hear how much you like your new Wild A and glad it helped you get the perfect birthday present.

Hey, I also got it just now, does it also have the hissing sound when blowing harder on second octave? I'm a beginner with some other whistles, but none of them have this hissing air sounds especially the second octave like blowing in a metal pipe, not sure if this is how this particular type of whistle is supposed to sound or I'm doing something wrong. I definitely notice it now in this video, still not to the level I notice it when playing :(

Really liked seeing all the whistles side by side at the end....I didn't know which keys were what sizes...

Love it! That 2nd tune made me want to get up and do a jig. Love the sound it's so smooth and mellow.

Thank you, Brian, that was lovely! I appreciated your previous advice and did end up purchasing the Wild A whistle myself. It took a little while to get used to the breath control in the lower notes, but the more I play it, the more responsive it is and the more I love it, just like my Wild C whistle. I have enjoyed these videos very much.

Wow. The way you assessed this whistle says that it is the one I have been looking for.

I have the D with me now, and I want to have the A as well! What perfect whistles these are. Brilliant playing!

Since Killarneys only go as low as Bb, I got myself a Wild A. And I agree with everything that’s said here. My only wish now is that there’ll soon be a Wild alto G and F as well.

Sometime I will get a Wild in A and maybe in the other alto and soprano keys. G, F, Bb, C, and D.

Really appreciate your thorough reviews on these whistles!! I’m completely torn between the A and the Bb - do you have a favorite or recommendation between the 2? I’ve only played high D’s so far!

Go for the A, Kim, it's halfway between a low whistle and a soprano whistle. This tin whistle guide by McNeela Music is also very helpful when choosing: blog.mcneelamusic.com/2019/11/25/an-irish-tin-whistle-buyers-guide/#Irish_Whistle_Ranges

I have just received my Wild A and love it’s tone. I also like the weight. Can you write the titles of the 2 tunes you played here, I want to learn them? Thank you.

Love the review series Brian, thank you. I have 3 of the 5 Wilds now, 2 more to go 😅. What’s your experience up into the 3rd register? Do you have fingering suggestions above the 3rd tonic (D on D whistle, A on A, etc). I’ve requested from McNeela but they just give me the standard 2 octaves.

Where can I purchase a D wild whistle in Dublin. I'd also love a low D whistle. The gaps are so wide on these low whistles between the holes. I can't reach cover the holes correctly unfortunately.

Hi Patricia, you can purchase instore or online here at McNeela Instruments: mcneelamusic.com/contact-us/ Have you tried the piper's grip for the low whistle, Patricia? Here's a handy blog post: blog.mcneelamusic.com/2018/12/11/the-pipers-grip-for-irish-simple-system-flute-players/

No doubt McNeela will be expanding the key range of the Wild Irish whistles. Keep an eye on their whistles page over the coming months: mcneelamusic.com/wild-irish-whistles/

I have an A from KerryWhistles but it has a horrible clogging problem! I can hardly get through a tune sometimes without it clogging. as much as I LOVE that whistle, I need to find a more reliable A. I don’t think I’ll get anymore from KW. I love my Killarney’s, which I’ve heard are super similar to Wild. These Wild’s sound absolutely gorgeous! Thanks for the review! I think I grab one while they’re on sale😉

Could you please help me choose between the A and their Bb? I love the low flute-like sound they have but havent succesfully understood the difference between the two. Any advice?

Thanks for your support! At the moment the best place is probably Bandcamp. Here's the link: brianhughes1.bandcamp.com/album/this-day-20-years. I'm hoping to have new material recorded soon, so watch this space.

I bought this same tin whistle. It has horrible clogging issues. I can play a woodnote plastic tin whistle better than the Wild. I was very disappointed with it. Now I have to convince Mcneela to give me a damn refund.

Sorry to hear that, Finis, McNeela are a great crowd to deal with and I'm sure this was just a bad whistle - it can happen to the best makers! Drop them a line and I'm sure they'll look after you.
