Just bought the Action 4 yesterday after selling my freezing, file corrupting and overall unreliable GoPro 11. Kind of miss the _idea_ of unlimited cloud storage, daily highlight clips and cool effects like the vehicle light trails but honestly I'm blown away with the Osmo Action 4's ease of use, the front touch screen, the battery life etc already. The Action 4 "just works" which to me is the most important feature in any device/thing I use. I got super frustrated with the GoPro more times than I can count. Especially when I wanted to use it to record our bands gigs and practice sessions. Thought I could just mount the camera somewhere, press record and edit the clips later. More often than not the files were corrupted, the camera needed to be rebooted by taking the battery out and so on. Glad to finally have a video camera with which I can actually shoot video. :D

I tell you - I bought a couple of the A4 - they are easier to use, far more responsive, better battery life and better low light video (I record my band mostly - so difficult lighting at gigs) - the ONLY 'gotcha' for me is that the gopros give you a RAW audio track (if you activate it) so the sound quality is way better - the A4 is OK but compresses madly to stop distortion at high levels - so I just use a Sony PCM audio recorder.@@michaelfrymus

I recently bought an OA4, needing to replace my old GoPro7. I'm really pleased with it and this review explains quite a lot of the reasons. The nice thing is that in 2023 there are no really bad action cams in the mainstream (GoPro/DJI/Insta360). For me it was not needing 5.3K, not needing vertical video much, but the magnetic mount and front touch screen, which fit my usage cases more than the GoPro are worth switching.

    • @NightTrainRides
      @NightTrainRides Год назад +1

For the casual user, you're correct. For everyone else, the gopro sucks. The only reason why I bought an 11 is someone stole my gopro 7 and the action 3 was having sharpness issues and I needed something right away.
This thing glitches and overheats just as much as my 7 did plus you have to buy extra accessories to get decent audio out of it.
I will say that the stabilization and horizon lock are second to none, but from a usability standpoint, I hate it.

I don't understand how most reviewers keep saying the image quality between these two cameras is the same. Gopro's image quality is on a different level. For example look at any frame during the lens comparisons, let's take 5:05 for example. Her face is completely flat, featureless, and overexposed on the DJI whereas the gorpo you can see her freckles and other features on her face. Look at the T-shirt, on the DJI it is a washed out gray blotch, on the Gopro you can actually the texture and the design on the fabric. Finally, look at the gray bottom of the brick wall to her right, on the Gopro you can clearly see the holes on the wall but on the DJI it looks practically flat, zero detail. DJI "looks" brighter because it overexposes in most cases, look at her sunglasses, I doubt they're as clear as they look on the DJI that has nothing to do with the "bigger sensor". Ease of use may go to the DJI but Gopro produces better images.

I promised myself that I wasn’t going to watch yet another GP vs OA4 video, but had to watch yours! On some reviews I tend to prefer the GP, on some, like this one I preferred the OA4. Bottom line they are both better-at some things. Doesn’t the OA4 have a horizon steady option in 4K 60 and below…so good to approx 45 degrees…would meet most of my needs if so. I do like the software options for star trails etc on the GP (11 and 12), but the OA4 just works well overall. I can see why you have both!

At minute 7.03 you say that the Go Pro 12 has a big advantage when using maximum lens mode due to horizon lock. Not only is the field of view larger, but the camera also maintains a flat, completely inverted horizon
EAS can be very helpful in overall stabilization
Why do you use Rockstady Plus and not the Horzion equalizer from Osmo 4 in this comparison?
I had the Osmo4 and the Go pro12
I returned the Go Pro 12
    Why
When it gets dark or dusk, the Go Pro12 no longer makes nice films
way too dark and too pixelated

The battery life of the GoPro seems as good. Overheating at 35 min occasionally does not seem a big issue. How many times you need to make such long clips with an action camera?
An interesting battery test comparison would be shooting 20 or 30 min clips. Then turn the camera off for a while. Repeat. And then see how much longer after one camera dies the other can have power.
It would be a more real life usage comparison.
I agree with you about the usability advantages of the DJI action 4. Is the action 3 as good in low light?
Anyway 5K cam be useful for cropping video or for printing still images from a frame.
I prefer the less wide lens of the GoPro for a more natural look and perspective

After several issues with my GoPro cameras, that were never resolved by their supportteam (I would rather call them FAQ readers), I would go for the DJI products. But looking at the video quality, especially the structure of your t-shirt pattern, I must admit that GoPro is the clear winner. But do I still need an action camera in 2023, after all the video quality of my iPhone is so good that I would rather invest in more memory for the iPhone than buying a dedicated action camera? 3 different physical lenses, also decent vibration reduction and almost no issues with firmware bugs convinced me not to buy an action camera anymore, even while I miss the robustness. Great review BTW, not biased like many others.

I really enjoy your videos. So thank you. With so many options out there, your comparison reviews stand out as straightforward and down-to-earth, and I really appreciate that. That being said, I believe that now, after numerous advancements driven by competition, these cameras have become quite similar in terms of performance. Ultimately, the choice between them boils down to personal preference and how our eyes perceive the color and quality of the image.
I draw a parallel to the experience of choosing a TV brand. When I was in the market for a new TV last year, I was torn between various brands. Despite the allure of new features, we consistently found ourselves gravitating back towards Sony, a brand we had been loyal to for years. Interestingly, a salesperson in Japan explained that our eyes tend to adapt to what we're accustomed to, making it comfortable to stick with the same brand. Even if another brand boasts a newer model and claims it's "better," it doesn't necessarily mean our eyes will prefer what they see. So, while I wouldn't categorize it as brand loyalty, there's certainly something to be said for the comfort of familiarity.

I'm pleased that you included at least a mention of the GoPro Media Mod in your comparison. Most reviewers don't bring it up. Yet, it is a useful accessory, and I don't think there is an equivalent product for the Action cameras. The Media Mod is poorly designed, but it is still a very useful product and its mere existence could be a reason to choose a GoPro over the DJI Action.
However, I was hoping you'd also include at least a casual mention of the GoPro quick release buckles. As with most reviewers, you compared the Action's magnetic quick release with the GoPro's fixed mount - the finger mount. However, GoPros also come with their own quick release buckle mount. No one ever brings that up.
There's no question that the Action's magnetic quick release is faster and more convenient than the GoPro finger mount. However, how does it compare to GoPro's quick release system? That would be a more valid comparison. It's better to compare quick release to quick release, not one camera's quick release to another camera's fixed mount.
I use the GoPro quick release system to move my GoPro from the Jaws grip to the GoPro 3-Way Grip to the Chest Harness to the Handler to the bicycle mount. All of these use the GoPro quick release system, and I never have to touch the GoPro fingers or thumbscrews at all.
And nobody brings it up, but the design of the Action's magnetic quick release means that the camera sits much higher on the mount AND you are forced to use the magnetic quick release at all times. The magnetic base sits on top of the usual GoPro fingers with a thumbscrew (which is why it sits so high). It's not like the thumbscrew and fingers are gone. They're still there. The magnetic mount sits on top of them. And because it is designed in this way, you MUST use the quick release system 100% of the time. You don't have a choice.
I prefer the GoPro approach in which the fixed mount (thumbscrew and fingers) is more separate from the quick release mount. You can use the fixed finger mount if you choose. Or you can use the quick release mount. You can use one or the other depending on the situation or your needs. It's a choice. But the Action's system forces you to use the magnetic quick release mount all the time.
And it's true that the Action's approach to the custom presets combined with the Quick Switch button is more convenient than the GoPro's custom preset system. However, in a complete comparison, it should be noted that the GoPro's power button also doubles as a quick switch button. It doesn't switch between presents, but it does switch the camera between modes, which could be enough for most people. Plus, pressing a combination of the GoPro record button and the power button, DOES call up a menu of your custom presets. It's not a great system, but it does exist.
GoPro cameras also have four shortcut buttons that are a powerful and fast way of changing settings without having to use presets at all. Personally, I don't even use presets. I use the shortcut buttons to quickly change the settings if I need to. As far as I'm aware, the DJI Action cameras don't have any customizable shortcut buttons. I know that if I switched to an Action, I'd miss those shortcut buttons. I use them all the time.
Speaking of usability features, there might be a couple of other areas where the GoPro system could be preferable. I find the implementation of the scrubbing tool on the GoPro to be much better than that of the Action. It's a tool that I use all the time. People have also noted that the playback volume of the Action is too low. It can be inaudible in outdoor spaces. Playback audio on the GoPro is much louder and easier to hear in public spaces.
I was also a bit confused by your battery life tests and comparisons. To me, battery life and overheating are two different things. The fact that a camera overheated and shut down doesn't mean that the battery ran out. In my case, I never record with a camera so long that it ever overheats anyway. It's kind of a non-issue. But if it overheat, I wouldn't conclude that this means it has short battery life. The camera shut down, not the battery. It doesn't tell me how long the battery would last under normal conditions. Even if your camera overheats and shuts down, you just let the camera cool and start recording again. The battery will still have power to keep shooting video.
I've been trying to figure out how long the batteries last in the new Hero 12. But reviewers seem to be talking about overheating and not actual battery life for a normal person.
Anyway, I enjoyed your video very much. You bring up a lot of great points that other reviewers have missed. 😀

All very fair points. TBH I’ve never used the GoPro buckle quick release because I often end up pinching my fingers so it never crosses my mind to mention it. For battery life and overheating, I do think they’re related because if I can’t continue filming because the camera overheated, a long battery life doesn’t matter…but I see your perspective on it too.

I don't hate having to choose since I typically only use the front one but having the ability to record both could be very useful at times. I tend to agree that the average person will like the OA4 better and the low light performance is definitely better. This is the best side by side comparison I've seen, and I've watched quite a few. I have to say that in almost every side-by-side example in your video, the GoPro has the better image quality (excluding low light). Because of my previous problems with prior GoPro cameras, the latest being the Hero 9, it pains me to say I'm probably going with the GoPro Hero 12. I do very little night shooting which helps with the decision. The magnet attachment is a huge game changer, so I'll spring for the aftermarket setup for the GoPro. I may kick myself around the block after this decision but we'll see. Subscribing to your channel.

For me the two selling points for The Gopro Hero 12 are that you can have both screens on in high definition and the cloud storage. The Dji Action 4 only allows one screen at a time in high definition and DJI doesnt offer cloud storage.

Excellent as always. I own the GoPro 9. With lots of accessories but I’m leaning towards buying the DJI action. One thing I noticed in your video is the Dji looked overexposed on most of your video. Is it possible you had exposure compensation on the camera set or is this an issue.? Would you actually set the camera to under expose? I’m of course assuming the DJI has exposure compensation. Thank you again for what you do,

Since dji has bigger sensor I think it is taking more light. More light is always better because we can reduce brightness during editing is what I think. Voice is just excellent with dji. But clearly I can see more sharpness with go pro. I think since I already have go pro hero 8 it might be better to get dji for magnetic mount, more light on sensor, front touch screen etc. Also dji action 4 has no hanging problem..

The best of the small cameras for vlogging is the DJI Pocket series. Especially in low light the gimbal stabilization is far better than digital stabilization.
The specialized action cameras are best for action and ruggedness, but their images are always too digitally enhanced for my liking for vlogging, but if choosing between the Action and GoPro, the GoPro offers more shooting modes and better hyperlapse options. Also the Action 4 is prone to jello artifacts when moving in visually complex environments like forest, while I never see that with GoPro. And the nearly square sensor also offers more options. Horizon leveling works better on GoPro, and the lens mod is brilliant. Plus the variety of Go Pro accessories is second to none.
While I loathe the teenage girlie speckle look of the Hero 12, it is my first choice for action, but for vlogging there are several other cameras I prefer, including the Pocket, ZV-E10, ZV1, or Insta360 One X2. It is telling that I took both the Pocket 1 and 2 with me to India for the vlogging stuff, and a Panasonic G9 for main video and stills camera.

However I dont know why I just had to get the GoPro Hero12 and have been testing it out. Surprisingly I was able to video with it without overheating yet but so far only up to 47 mins (forgot to leave it on to let it overheat). My Hero11 would have overheated at 21 mins filming 4K60. Anyways going to keep using it and I know eventually I’ll get a Action 4! Thanks Suzi 🤗aloha 🤙🏽😊

Thnx for the comparison. However have a comment and a question.
    1. DJI definitely perform better in low light but seem to have tendency to overexpose during the day. As such GoPro seem better for daytime videos. Comments ?
    2. I like to do night video. I know neither is great but was wondering your opinion on going with a slightly higher ISO (maybe a ISO 800 or 1000) on gropro 12 with a gimbal. In ur option will that put it on level footing with DJI at night ? Any comments on noise on both for night video ?

I concur that the DJI Osmo Action 4 is the best choice I've made. Unfortunately, I am currently stuck with the GoPro 12, but there are certain issues. The primary problem with the DJI Osmo is its availability, and it mainly offers video settings in 1080p. While it's user-friendly, the 10-megapixel sensor leaves something to be desired. Nevertheless, the package that comes with extra batteries and a stick is reasonably balanced for the DJI Osmo Action 4, despite my reservations.
In contrast, GoPro seems to follow a different approach. They provide a quality sensor but require you to spend extra on accessories. Overheating and design problems, such as the water drain port, have been frustrating. I, like many others, mistakenly assumed it was a latch and broke the water drain port cover. It feels like GoPro hasn't been responsive to customer feedback. They appear to stick with a consistent hardware approach, similar to Apple, and yet people continue to buy their products. The GoPro 12 is my first action camera, and the expense of buying accessories separately has been a drawback. If GoPro maintains this attitude in the future, I might consider the GoPro 12 my last GoPro camera, and I'll likely switch to DJI.

I wanna use a camera for vlogging, i've been looking at the dji action 4 & gopro hero 12 & sony zv-1 ii or zv-e10 or zv-1e, i'm wondering if you own all those cameras and might do a video suggesting which is the best for what you get? i wanna vlog, i already own a nikon d3300 but its big and heavy, and is 20.2 mp, the sony zv-1 ii is also 20mp but is also geared towards vlogging as well, I like the flexibility with the gopro and action for using it for action type shots if you need to use it for that, but as a person who doesnt want to buy lenses often for my future camera because of the expense, i was wondering what you suggest? I also know the camera isn't interchangeable on the sony zv-1 ii and notice that i do indeed use my bigger lens on my nikon to zoom into far away shots, but i have to say also the Nikon was given to me for free by my dad years ago. I was thinking of using the action camera mostly for vlogging but sometimes the quality does have blotchy looking pixels in videos even on high quality, i also wanna film inside my home, but the flexibility and the the combo stuff they sell witg the action 4 is so good, i also like how you can change the pixel sharpness as well on the action camera, because i noticed too some reviews look worse than others and i think it might have to do with the sharpness they applied in the dji settings! Thanks for reading and I love your videos!

First off, thank you for your videos. Not only are they informative, but I could listen to you speak all day. Some angelic quality to your voice or something. And I'm gay, so it's not like I'm hitting on you. LOL. That aside, I have been debating about jumping over to the Osomo Action, because pretty much everything else I use (barring actual cameras) is DJI; gimbals, drones, Pocket 1, 2, and now 3...but...I am still fully entrenched with GoPro because I have had every iteration since the 4 Black. But then again, my first few drones were Yuneec and I SWORE I would NEVER go to DJI because, well, honestly, I think it was because everyone I knew (at the time) who flew a DJI (Phantom 4) was kind of a D-hole. I finally caved and bought the Mavic 2 Pro way back when, and have never regretted it. I suppose I am going to cave (maybe when the 5 comes out), and do my own comparison. I'm just not not sure how much better ANY of these cams can get, short of including a optical zoom. Who knows? That might be next. Cheers, and please....keep making your amazing videos. All the best from NJ, even though I was actually born in Seattle and lived there for the first 5 years of my life.

Do you foresee changing the mount of the camera much, like from a helmet to chest cam to a stick etc? If so, I would think Action 4's mounting system would be a killer feature for you specifically, as it is extremely convenient for me as well (I have an Action 3 and super happy with it).
GoPro is better at keeping the horizon levelled on a 360-roll, as it can do it on 4k resolution whereas Action 4 can only do it on 2.7k resolution IIRC.
It's a feature though that I personally have not used even once with Action 3, but everyone has their own use cases and the use cases really should determine the selected camera. I do mostly fishing & biking with a chestcam and I believe either one would be good for those uses.
For Action 3 (& 4) the two biggest killer features for me have been the 1) mounting system 2) battery cover/charger that charges 3 x batteries at once and quickly.

The action alway looks blown out compared to GoPro especially on your face, go pro face shot much more flattering. I use the media mod always with a rode micro. For the action i had do get a special cage to use my mini light. I got the action specifically just to use a direct connect with my mic 2. As a video camera, the GoPro is still better, the action usually looks grainy when i compare mine side by side. I do a lot of diy video, which sometimes is low light, the DJI sucks unless you limit the iso. I am so used to GoPro for since i have been a goproer since the first GoPro, so it has been hard to learn a whole new camera, the interface is so different. The batteries on both suck. My hero 11 quits and goes to the repairing file all the time, it just stops, sucks, but at least it saves the file, before that footage was gone. Larry

Can the Osmo action camera be connected to a Bluetooth microphone remotely Like Instamic? I have had the GoPro max as my first action camera for over a year, very disappointed I must say, for one thing, all my batteries started to bulge due to overheating, as a matter of fact, I just threw out four otherwise working batteries because they would not fit into the camera anymore due to overheating. Number two recording audio has been a problem and should’ve been addressed before they put the GoPro Max out on the market, being able to use a remote Bluetooth mic for instance being on a motorcycle and able to record audio while speaking from inside the helmet with camera being on the handlebars. I will appreciate your input. By the way your video was very informative. In fact, it was one of the best videos made if not the best.
