Epic, wide screen films. They don't make them like that any more. Omar Sharif's entrance in Laurence was perhaps the greatest screen entrance in film history.

0:53 I love their friendship and friendships like that are really good to have. Love in so many forms is good to have. I wanted their characters to be friends so badly and seeing their good moments in the film and in real life for them makes me so happy. I hope they had a good time with it off camera too.
I do know that Lawrence of Arabia probably was written to have a homoerotic subtext too because of the real man's possible sexuality or maybe how repressed things were back then, but I also think it was a friendship film, something of it's time. I feel like there were these films, like with Oliver! or the 1939 version of Goodbye, Mr. Chips that were friendship films for straight men. You can even see it in Star Wars with Lando, Han Solo, and Luke. There is real pain there and growth from knowing each other in the original trilogy.
I don't think a lot of friendship films are told the same way now though, because of the limits from those times (like no one, even if they were making a secret gay or bi storyline, could go that far), and how filmmakers today are sometimes more obvious about that they are hiding that two men or two women are in love and they still want praise from all sides.
They make it obvious but also not a real reveal and nowadays that just won't look beautiful in any form. I'm straight and even I don't like when same-sex couples can't be fully revealed, but we get treated like we should be applauding. I know that the point is also to make money, but if you can't do something, you have to only receive as much enjoyment from the audience as we feel we can give.
You can't get praise for almost doing something or for not doing something fully. I think because we can openly ask for more seeing something not be fully revealed and not getting enough of what we want wrecks what would be good and great shows and films.
I think it's always been done on purpose sometimes (and also just some people having tunnel vision when it comes to seeing the world and they only see their own feelings), like how the term "queerbaiting" exists now, to get both people who want a romantic story or who want a friendship story to like something and then you make more money and get more recognition.
I also think some people are more honest about what friendship can feel like and they were able to express that in ways we don't do now and maybe can't do now. It's usually done with jokes now, but these kinds of films were so serious with how friends, enemies who wish they would be friends, would feel and not with sexual jokes.
Filmmakers, anyone telling stories, would not have had as much public responsibility to people who could be in same-sex relationships or who would want to see them on screen/in a book, nor would they have been as called out by them. However, I think the answer is to let friendship stories be told, and between straight, gay, bi, or any other people, and also let same-sex romances be represented too. We're all supposed to be able to find stories we can see ourselves in.
The film hits on all the ways friendships can run deep, animosity can come with it, how race and which group you are in can play a role. I mean it is dated, I see that, but I've seen it (I'm twenty-nine.) and the emotions with their character's friendship is so real, tumultuous, and gets me in my heart. I do wish certain casting (Middle Eastern people can play the roles written about them and be given dignity all the time without a white savior, but they can have white friends if they do.) and other story choices could have been better though.

As Kyle Mclaughlin is to David Lynch, Omar was to Peter.
Kindred spirits that found each other by chance circumstance, that formed a bond of deep friendship for life.
Sadly back then once actors became older they got less parts and were vastly underutilized so they often went back to the stage and the general public who mostly can't afford theater, saw ever less of them, especially Peter, criminally under used.
Mercifully post 2000 there seems to have been a marked change, I tend to call this the Mckellen effect as it seems to have been post magneto that there was a sea change in how hollywood regards and uses older actors after his xmen stint. Suddenly we had and have continued to have, all manner of older actors in far more weighty rolls, I was especially pleased to see Donald Sutherland as president Snow in the hunger games. And even Peter got some limelight again before he left us. Epic.
