RIP Peter Finch (September 28, 1916 - January 14, 1977), aged 60 And RIP Peter O'Toole (August 2, 1932 - December 14, 2013), aged 81 You both will be remembered as legends.
This man was a true "diamond in the rough!" People was commenting on another video about what a bad thing his drinking was, but this is 3 years before he died at 81, and he still embraces his vices! May the sweet soul of this old gentleman live on forever!
Excessive drinking is bad don’t care long how this man lasted nor how many cas.... he walked behind, 5 percent of all the alcoholics probably probably conduct themselves normal.
"We were on the wrong grave 🪦" ...Those guys made boozing as though they were drinking lemonade. What wonderful Peter O'Toole was. Indeed he's humor is sorely missed.
I first met Peter in 1988 and, over the next 25yrs, got to know him rather well. You'd be forgiven for thinking that conversations like this took place on a regular basis. But they did not. In fact, contrary to popular belief, Peter, although he did drink to excess at times, especially in the early years, was very rarely the mess he purported to be. He was a quiet, extremely organised man, who was at his happiest having a raucous night... pretending to be incapably drunk, when in fact, he'd switched to softer drinks hours before. That's not to say these anecdotal events never took place, because they did. It's just they took place with slightly less alcohol on Peter's side than he had people believe. Even those he was with at the time. To say Peter was a was warm, genuine and unbelievably thoughtful man, is to woefully underestimate him. He was truly one of a kind and I will always be grateful for his friendship.
@James Henderson "O'Toole was born in 1932. Some sources give his birthplace as Connemara, County Galway, Ireland, while others cite St James University Hospital, Leeds, England. O'Toole claimed he was not certain of his birthplace or date, noting in his autobiography that, while he accepted 2 August as his birthdate, he had a birth certificate from each country, with the Irish one giving a June 1932 birth date."
@James Henderson Maybe but nobody wants to be from England because the entire world thinks you're charmless boring twats and always has. So he reinvented himself according to his roots.
My husband and I discussed this movie just last night and those were my exact sentiments. Peter O Toole could out class the majority of actors we have today.
Peter was like your very very very favorite Irish uncle who you would go visit, buy his booze and his cigars, spend hours talking and talking, and then come back the next week. Lovely, and ultra talented man who blessed us all with his divine presence in life
useless actors who are "Stars" these days has max 2 hits and nothing more but consistent work!those stars back in the day Shined through in most movies they were in!
He was so amasing, one of the best actors ever and his legendary drinker friends as well Richard Burton, Richard Harris, Finchey as well great actors and legendary drinkers they never get aggressiv
Robert Sellers wrote "Hellraisers", a wall to wall thrill ride through O'Toole, Richard Harris, Alan Bates, and Oliver Reed's adventures- Snap it up and get even more memories!
There was never a sense that O’Toole had missed out on any mischief or debauchery. 😂 Conversely he adored Kate Hepburn, who occasionally threw a punch at him. He named his daughter after her. What a marvelous life.
I love this clip and i especially love how nobody including dave knew what on the lash means. Id love to have met peter. And reed and harris some lash be had
I'm sure Richard and Peter and the other Richard and Oliver didn't mind being called hellraisers, mainly because there was no denying it. But in all truth and with special regard to O'Toole, Harris and Burton, they were spectacularly good at their job.
having seen the clip of richard harris on conan talking about drinking with o'toole. i needed to see this. man, these actors back then took drinking to a new level and all of them rock stars from the 70s and 80s for all of the drugs and booze they did are child's play compared to what these guys did. yet they did with class. then there's the 1920s and well..... yeah, no one will top that.
Went on the lash, the barman wouldn't serve us any more so we bought the bar... conclusion... the bar ran dry that night... fantastic love this Irish gent... I know he's English but he's a fantastic Irish man to me
Peter O' Toole could explain the code of a UNIX server and I'd be transfixed. He was a gentlemen and storyteller from a time that does not exist anymore.
One of the best cinema actors of all time who didn't need no stinking Oscar to prove to the world that he was a GREAT actor. Peter O'Toole even turned down a knighthood in 1987, something many Oscar winners were not offered at all. Honorary ? Don't bother.
I might have seen this interview 20-30 times, it’s the best and it always makes me smile!
agreed!
To be able to look back upon one’s life and find humor and meaning is something I think we all desire.
i'd frankly like to say something different, but yay, that was perfectly.......sufficient.
I also return to it from time to time every year
As we all should and do 🙂@@tiagomartinho77
Storytelling at its finest - never hurried, never gets old.
He is just so captivating.
Every time he talks, every soul in earshot hangs on every word that elegantly rolls off his tongue.
That pause after 'on the LASHHHH' is diabolical.
"It distresses us to return work which is not perfect." Brilliant epitaph!
RIP Peter Finch (September 28, 1916 - January 14, 1977), aged 60
And
RIP Peter O'Toole (August 2, 1932 - December 14, 2013), aged 81
You both will be remembered as legends.
Will always wish Peter Finch lived 2 months more. His Network Performance I have seen 10+ Times
That mischievous nod and genial smile after "on the Lash" is so so endearing! RIP LEGEND!

Brenda Clark Peter once said that his friends would often say so, and then he’d find himself- more often than not- walking behind their caskets.
Bravo!!

Great story. If you have more contact me.
A lovely insight. Thank you.
Has to be one of the best stories I ever heard. Always makes me smile.
O’Toole was one of those guests Dave loved having on because he always had great stories
Read his biographies they are dynamite. Peter was a kind soul. A true performer. Greatly missed.
‘The Life and Inebriated Times’ is highly recommended
This is the greatest story ever told.
I saw this on your channel first. Somebody left a comment saying where the bar is. Hope to pay a visit someday.
@@RUclipsKnight where is it?
Absolutely!!
Black lock it's called "The Dawson Lounge" on Dawson Street in Eire. Known as the smallest pub in the world.
Both of them! hahahah
effortless re-telling, perfect timing, and brilliant punchlines.
O'toole had a great sense of humour. RIP legend
OMG, when I am sad, I just replay this interview and then I burst out laughing. Lovely, Peter O'Toole, we miss you.
Exactly.
I exploded in laughter and wet me knickers!
Me also
Possibly the most dashing man who ever lived, and a great deal more of a friend and a gentleman than, say, Errol Flynn. A genuine prince of Ireland.
Wasn't too bad of an actor either . :)

Post-imperial laughing stock.
An amazing actor and sadly missed R.I.P. 🙏🏻
I like O`Toole`s pause to Lettermans reaction to the phrase "On the lash"....
he was also an amazing storyteller.....great memories only 2013 that he passed away.....
His performance alone saved the movie "TROY" he out performed the entire cast and elevated an otherwise forgettable movie.
He was mesmerizing in Troy.

Ah the movie was very good, beautiful sets and scenery and great battles. But yea he was best thing in it.
Have to agree.
Did he even get a nomination? No.
What tremendous class! Truly a unique individual.

Great interview and powerful actor, Mr. O'Toole!
These two guys have the greatest stories ever!!!!!!! O’toole and Harris.
Funny, I just posted what you said! Michael Caine too!
The eloquence and poise with which this man delivers this story. What a tremendous talent.
This has to be the best interview ever made in any late night
Now that is how you tell a story.
incredible actor and very funny man, actors aren't like this anymore
I agree with this comment

My god, i miss this man so much. I was crazy to read his third biography but i was deeply saddened when they said that it won't come out :(
The last of the real hellraisers...

This, right here, truly is my favorite video on RUclips.
Totally agree.

His voice never changed. Sounds exactly the same as Lawrence of Arabia.
What a lovely guy. And a brilliant raconteur

I watch this clip often…it keeps me young😂
Peter could’ve been a stand up comic if he wanted to.
Brilliant sense of humor and excellent sense of comic timing.
Even at that age, he was absolutely adorable.
I'll be watching this clip a thousand more times in my life hopefully.
I am so jealous that dude that shared a laugh with Peter O'toole.
Folks. This fine man is the definition of a GENTLEMAN and to make it even worst he has the voice of a KING
He’s marvelous as the elder Casanova with David Tenant as the younger Casanova. Two brilliant actors. It’s quite pornographic but a GREAT romp!
mr. o'toole absolutely a fantasic actor ,
a drunk mr. o'toole is the ultimate actor.
sublime..
I got hooked on Peter after watching "Lawerence of Arabia". Him and guys like Richard Harris were just the best.
Otoole is the best story teller ever with Richard Harris a close second.
Great story teller.
Brilliant. Beautiful and Classy.
Fun fact. The pub he's talking about is still there, I had my first pint there with my father 12 years ago.
What pub is it ?
@@TrueFilter The Harbour Bar in Bray. He gifted the bar a moose head ( movie prop) and it's still on the wall.

Very funny. Love the wit.
a story every grandfather should tell..... LOL!! So great
His chosen epitaph is a close runner up to “Suprise me!” But then there so many golden lines in Lion in Winter that could be apt. He is sorely missed.
