I enjoyed Paul Hogan's work a great deal. His easy sense of humor appears to be one of his best traits. As far as putting Australia on the map, I think you would know more about it than I do. I'm from the US, so I'm not sure I have everything right. That is, some people are native Australians, while others moved there, later. And, I tend to forget which is which. But, I remember hearing early on that the Seekers, with lead singer Judith Durham, were from the land down under. I enjoyed checking to see her latest from time to time, over the many decades, and seeing that she was still around. But, sadly, I was late on that account. It turns out that she passed away in August of 2022. I also took note of the late Steve Irwin, on TV. The freak accident that took his life saddened many besides me, to be sure. It would be easy to say, if you live a life surrounded by danger, the odds against you increase. But, he's still gone. And, I'll miss tuning into more new episodes. RIP Judith Durham. We loved your clean, uplifting tones and captivating charm. And, thanks for giving us your Georgy Girl.

Some people mention Dustin Hoffman in the comments, but I know a story about this. After the show Dustin Hoffman was taking Paul Hogan around to meet all the celebrities and saying this guy is amazing. Why did he say that? Well it turns out the Paul Hogan is the only person to introduce the Oscars who never had an official rehearsal of what they were going to say and, even more, the producers had no idea what he was going to say. Hogan, unlike most people up there, had no autoQ and no written text. As far as I am aware this is the only time this has happened. Dustin Hoffman was so impressed that he went around to tell everyone about it.
Would explain why he paid more attention to the speech versus just taking it as entertainment value. He really was paying attention and wanted to hear what Hogan was going to say.

I saw a docco on him, and he never wrote down or practised his speeches. Even this one. Apparently the producers were really nervous about it because they kept asking him for his script before he went on. He didn't have one, and he refused to rehearse because he didn't really know what he was going to say til he went out and didn't see the point. But apparently he just goes out with a general idea of what he's going to say and it's all ad-lib. I get the feeling that nowadays there is no way anyone would be allowed to do that because no independent thought is allowed.

Wonderful man, and a class act.

I watched Hoges as a young teenager with the whole family. You probably couldn’t get away with some of that stuff these days. He made us laugh, but we were just as much having a good laugh at ourselves than anything else. Sometimes I feel social and political correctness has diminished our ability to chuck off at ourselves.
What a legend! We as kids in the 70s use to play football on Saturday mornings and Paul took his son's, as they were playing as well, he used to sit on his black Porche bonnet to watch the games, he was a local to the North shore suburbs, He used to say G'day to us all kids, was so cool.

Some people mention Dustin Hoffman in the comments, but I know a story about this. After the show Dustin Hoffman was taking Paul Hogan around to meet all the celebrities and saying this guy is amazing. Why did he say that? Well it turns out the Paul Hogan is the only person to introduce the Oscars who never had an official rehearsal of what they were going to say and, even more, the producers had no idea what he was going to say. Hogan, unlike most people up there, had no autoQ and no written text. As far as I am aware this is the only time this has happened. Dustin Hoffman was so impressed that he went around to tell everyone about it.

I have run across a lot of this type of humour in the western suburbs of Sydney where I grew up and competed with the best of them and in the bush where I lived and travelled. Aussie humour is as dry as a dead dingo's donga that takes the piss but with no malice and ends with a witty punchline and all off the cuff.
Paul Hogan, a true gent, terrific actor, good dad, funny as hell, put Australia on the map, that's a lot of achievements, went to Hollywood and showed them how it's done.

Doesn't matter. He brought some authenticity from an average working class man from Sydney to the stage at the Oscars that night. It was a breath of fresh air in a sea of pretentiousness in a lot of ways.

LOL 'wit'! It was dumbed down, pre-edited toned-down Oscars humour designed to create lame, low-level controversy. His production company would have spent days on that pre-fabricated 'spontaneous' speech so as to minimally offend. Notice they never take on their masters: the Holywood media industry, which is more deserving of witty, acerbic criticism. But you won't see it at the Oscars: it's all been pre-edited, pre-approved, and pre-tested with focus groups way before Hogan got up there. He did his job, got paid, and got the hell out of there. Hogan doesn't seem to want the limelight anymore - happy to count his money, and probably aware his humour was for an era and now that era has gone and it just sounds tired. Crocodile Dundee was the end of him - dumbed down, anodyne humour. But I don't blame him: he was just doing a job, cleaned up financially and now counts his money. At least he has the self-respect not to try a 'comeback' - in Australia it would be a disaster, and he thankfully knows it. Leave him as the legend he was in the 70s/80s.

The first European to discover Australia was a Dutchman by the name of Dirk Hartog. He was on his way to Java, modern day Indonesia, and got blown too far east. He landed on the coast of Western Australia, near Shark Bay. He left a plaque on the island now called Dirk Hartog island, which was found three hundred years after his visit.

EDiT: Found out that he did indeed co-host the Academy Awards in 1987 with Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn. Obviously this speech was his best moment, but I would have liked to have seen a video of his other bits from the telecast.

I saw a docco on him, and he never wrote down or practised his speeches. Even this one. Apparently the producers were really nervous about it because they kept asking him for his script before he went on. He didn't have one, and he refused to rehearse because he didn't really know what he was going to say til he went out and didn't see the point. But apparently he just goes out with a general idea of what he's going to say and it's all ad-lib. I get the feeling that nowadays there is no way anyone would be allowed to do that because no independent thought is allowed.

He used a cigarette lighter to look inside the petrol tank of his motorbike and blew himself up. I was too young to be playing with matches but I knew enough to know you should never do that. LMAO!
I can't remember if it was during this visit to L.A., or another one about the same time, but not only did I get to meet him at the Qantas ticket counter (I worked at LAX), he also walked behind the ticket counter, and taught me "the proper way to throw luggage onto the baggage belt" behind the ticket counter, using his own luggage as the subjects - and he was by no means nice to his luggage, either!!!

I watched Hoges as a young teenager with the whole family. You probably couldn’t get away with some of that stuff these days. He made us laugh, but we were just as much having a good laugh at ourselves than anything else. Sometimes I feel social and political correctness has diminished our ability to chuck off at ourselves.

What a legend! We as kids in the 70s use to play football on Saturday mornings and Paul took his son's, as they were playing as well, he used to sit on his black Porche bonnet to watch the games, he was a local to the North shore suburbs, He used to say G'day to us all kids, was so cool.
