The problem isn't that he's living with his parents at 30. Plenty of people have had to do that to save money since rent is absolutely insane right now. But he doesn't do chores, or pay rent, or contribute financially to the household. Which is just really shitty.

Welp. What i saw from this is. That's an annoying way to say "you're a mistake and an accident". Real parents won't do this to their child. Let alone dragging them to court and make it for all america to see how worse they are. Isn't this their parents fault too? how long did they let him go this way for so long?

I'm not sure what other recourse they had, though. They gave him 8 years to get his shit together. Isn't that enough? This isn't a child that were abandoned by his parents. This is a grown man who moved back into his parent's home and then refuses to leave or contribute. What would you do if you were them? Deplete your retirement savings to feed this manchild who refuses to get a job? Come on, now.

This is normal in Europe and it was very common only one generation ago. Usually one of children would stay at parent's house to help around and take care of them (if married, wife/husband would move in too). Not everybody was rich enough to buy/build their own home or buy a condo (we don't usually rent long-term). Nowadays it changes a bit and most kids move out but staying at your parent's home is still acceptable, at least until you marry somebody (almost all your couples want to live on their own if circumstances allow it).

He thought how inconceivable that family would threaten legal action against family, how it's unheard of back home. It was funny in my case too, as one of my grandparents pretended to a solicitor they didn't know I lived in their property, I guess they thought it would be easier to label me as a squatter than asking me to start paying rent. Well as soon as they threatened with a solicitor's letter to pay rent or you're on the street, I just accepted simple as that. I say simple, I was still pissed that they went about it that way. They could have just asked me, without those unnecessary threats to one's security

I explained this earlier, but even making a six figure salary I live paycheck to paycheck because of mortgage payments. If life doesn't screw me with surprises like medical emergencies and the like I'll have over 1m in retirement funds by 65, but that money disappears in an instant if you have a family that you're going to need to financially support.
Most people who are my parents age (born in 1960-1970), mine included are hilariously out of touch with the cost of a house or with rent, they were able to afford their down payment after 2-4 years of entry level work and were able to pay it off having two people working at McDonalds or similar. Most people my age however see things a little differently and don't have issue with their kids staying at home until they have the means to support themselves and live comfortably-- Which is to say not live on bare necessities paycheck to paycheck.
That doesn't really excuse this guy's behavior though. I just figure that since they say he was always smart kid he realized that working for most people won't get you anywhere and you'll be working 'til you die. Frankly most people who have the mindset of "Just go out and work hard" don't have the the capacity to look to the age of retirement and realize it's pointless to even try unless you have the capacity to work a job that pays over 120k/yr.

Had he been assisting with rent/bills or at the very minimum, helped out with the chores (he should be the one doing most of them to compensate for his lack of income) the parents would see no issue with his presence, they'd even welcome it.

I know it's weird for Americans, but generational living is pretty common in a lot of other countries, however in this case I feel there is more to it, just at looking how this guy acts and speaks suggests 2 things: 1. Either he has some undiscovered mental issues that should've been caught earlier in his life by his parents to try to help him or 2. His parents did a horrible job raising their own kid and spoiling him all the way, giving him always what he wants or just let him be like that thinking "he'll be fine one day" without raising him properly how to be an adult.
You don't just magically turn like that as grown up without having something wrong beforehand that was ignored through all of his life, or the parents just didn't do the parenting job right and left him to do whatever he wants and that's how he was raised and molded. Or maybe a bit of both. But the parents definitely had a hand in him being like this and never took the proper care to provide the educating or medical help he needed when he was younger. He can't even express himself or doesn't fully understand the simple questions he's been asked which as a 30 year old that's not normal. So he's like a 10 years old boy in the body of a 30 years old man. In any case the parents now reap the fruits of their "labor" and even trying to sue their own son while they also had a hand in creating.

    • @alkaya1907

Yes For sure the parents have fault in what he is, no matter if it's mental problem or nurture. In both cases they should've done better job raising him, helping him and making sure he can navigate thru adulthood. I'm more inclined to believe he is on a spectrum considering he can't formulate an answer or even understand the questions, that's not just from laziness. He doesn't even understand what a millennial is, it's almost like asking a little boy grown up questions expecting grown up answers. Like you said this doesn't just develop out of nowhere so the parents knew for long time there is something wrong with his mentality yet did absolutely nothing, otherwise they would've mentioned it or understand why he is like that and now just gave him the boot because of their own failure.

in finland we have probably the most extreme version. government pays the rent from the taxes collectively when you are unemployed, government pays the college, etc. right? , so you can basically move out at any age, even with no money.
you just need to do the paperwork.... so families basically throw their kids out at age 16 and provide no further financial assistance.
independence is highly valued and encouraged by society and government.. to the point of being cold to your children.
kids cycle to school alone from age 7, through the winter, too, if a mother/father drives you to school, you are seen as a wuss. in physical education kids are put into forest and given maps to figure it out, its called suunnistus, "orienteering".
kids do the chores in the house, not mothers, mothers are at work. kids are given power tools in shopping classes to make their wood stuff. kids pick their own food from in school cafeteria. kids are highly autonomous for their age. they cycle to their friends, use trains and other public transports alone, without asking permits from parents. kids are given kids debit card with their own bank account. figuring and solving things by yourself is highly preferred.
did you hit yourself in the head at school causing concussion during rough play? go to school nurse by yourself. there's no need to call parents. parents are irritated if you call. "you have school nurse, why are you calling me? "
schools provide free contraception to boys and girls at age of around 12-13, kid´s information is regarded by law as his&hers private matter that is not parent´s business to know automatically, and adult´s stuff like consent and s3x-ed health is discussed frankly in length and taught at relatively younger age than normally in other countries in school health education.
at least that was how it was still in the 90s & early 2000s when i was a kid. dont know if its anymore true, I've read a bit about "anxiety" in kids and young parents and "helicopter parenting", which was unknown thing in my time.
I've even read that many kids have been started to be taken with cars to school which is still hard to believe in my finnish context. there's more of "its not safe, we have to take kids to school by cars" talk from parents on the internet, and they sound like mentally insane anxiety twitter people. there's zero reason for them to take kids by cars to school like in usa.
(we are one of the safest countries in the world, 16.5.2024 "Homicides in Finland drop to 40-year low")
we specifically designed our towns and cities around easy cycling, year round, even during winter with snow plow machines.

    • @PowerofRock24

That was never a normal mindset to have. The only time in history a man left at 18 is to go to war. But multi-generational families are how we have lived since the stone age.
The only time it's reasonable to move out is if you're getting married, starting your own family and need the space to raise kids, buying your own home, or if your parents are abusive.

No, it is about being an adult and part of society. If my kid had a job and was actively looking for an apartment or trying to find room mates or they are in university I would be fine with them staying with me while doing so. But, if they are living there with no job, being lazy, just mooching, not doing anything with their life then I say they need to go figure it out on their own.
