The part about hobbling the faster runners to make everyone equal is the whole point of the short story Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut. It's a great read. It shows up in a LOT of sci-fi compendiums.
Harrison Bergeron can actually be read as a parody of people's views on communism. I would recommend looking into the writer and some of the scholarship on the story.
Something I liked about the Daredevil show and even Spider-man Homecoming was showing the aftermath of the attack on New York and how some people were coping with having to clean up all of that. It wasn't a large part of the plot of Daredevil, but it was present.
So good to hear Jason talk about protecting the legacy of Dredd, especially after seeing the way Halo is being treated right now. After the way Star Wars has been completely destroyed.
Very interesting interview. It is good to hear that Judge Dredd and the other 2000AD characters are in such good hands. I have to disagree with you over Anderson. Yes, she did lose her primary weapon (and get taken hostage) which results in a fail. But, what happens next? She doesn't give up. She kills Kay and escapes, kills the corrupt Judge Kaplan, rescues Dredd from Lex and then goes on the offensive against Ma-Ma. When they come across the Clan Techie, she butts heads with Dredd saying that her assessment isn't over and that she is still entitled to dispense justice. As far as she is concerned, she has failed but she's continuing with what she's committed to doing. That's why Dredd passes her. Also, in the comics over time Dredd does change and grow, but it is generally over the course of years rather than a single story or issue.
Agree totally. She doesn't say it (it would be corny) but she becomes the law. Dredd knows the city needs good judges. So he doesn't like it, but she is a pass. Doesn't mean he will pass the next one though.
If only all guardians of beloved franchises had the same view on building in defences against Hollywood's subversions and efforts of cultural vandalism.
Regarding the film adaptation of Lord of the Rings, your concept of the scene where everyone is waiting for Gandalf does exist while they are traveling through Moria. They reach a junction and Gandalf can't remember which path to take so they wait around a while to see if he remembers. During this time is when Frodo and Gandalf have their insightful conservation about Gollum and life. Ultimately Gandalf picks a direction not from memory but based on how the air in each tunnel smells.
interesting interview. i have sculpted a number of Judge Dredd minis in the past for mongoose and look forward to a TV series, great interview Lindybeige
I was a massive Dredd fan (still use Dreddfan as my gamertag on xbox 😁) but unfortunately life got in the way of being able to buy the comics. It's amazing to see two of my favourite RUclipsrs collaborate and even better to find out one of them actually owns the Dredd ip. I remember when rebellion took over the 2000ad magazine and people were worried about what it meant for the characters, we needn't have worried.
Well this bought back some memories... When I was a student in 1981 my neighbour had a huge collection of 2000AD and allowed me to read through them over the next 3 years... nowadays people would shoot you rather than slip them out of their plastic covers to actually look at them. I loved the Judge Dredds uncompromising character and the art style of the vehicles.
The best experience I ever had going to the cinema was when I went to see Dredd (Karl Urban). I got to my seat, lights went down, adverts came on, then the trailers, then the film started. I then realised that I was the only one in the theatre. It was such a great experience having what was essentially a private screening of a fantastic film. But it also made me angry as it meant that the film wasn't making much money, and I later learnt that the studio producing the film did an awful job of advertising it.
Judge Dredd (and 2000AD) was a major part of my formative years, comics and the GW RPG (80s and early 90s). The Dredd mythos was as valid to me as the Greek myths. Shame it hasn't translated well to other formats since, with the exception of the Alex Garland film. I hope a decent TV show appears.
@@Dee-nonamnamrson8718 yes, I said with the exception of Dredd (Alex garland scripted), I thought it was the best comic adaptation movie I have seen....shame there was no sequel

I think it fair to say that as he's obviously a fan the franchise is safe in his hands (notice Tharg was absent from their discussion?). The list of possible tv/film projects is endless (just think Future Shocks). Credo
Wasn't expecting the topic on this channel, was a great chat on the franchise! I've only ingested small chunks of the comics over the years, but really feeling an itch to dive headfirst into the whole series
They are currently releasing the Complete Case Files in book format. Any decent bookshop with a graphic novel section should have a couple of volumes in stock. Next time you're there I really recommend picking a volume up and flicking through it to see if what you see catches your eye.
Lats year and a year before that there were big Humble Bundle releases of just a huge amount of 2000AD content, with over half of all the Judge Dredd comics and almost all of the good stuff. They might do another soon, and that'll well be worth buying into, because you can see some of the other things 2000AD does.
Somehow this didn't show on my video list, thankfully I discovered it after a later video. This is so great that two of my favourite youtubers are geeking out over Judge Dredd and 2000AD. Looking forward to the stuff coming for this world.
I have to disagree about Aragorn not being able to toss a dwarf. Aragorn is a direct descendent of the Numenoreans i.e. Elendil/Isildur. Aragorn was 6'6" and incredibly strong due to his descent and Ranger lifestyle. I mean, Elendil his ancestor was 7'11"! What I'm trying to say is that Aragorn is not merely "Human" as we are. He is practically a meta-human.
Ever tried picking up a healthy, adult pittbull? They are tinny.. you should be able to.. what..? can't lift him from the ground? really? MUST BE ALL THAT MUSCLE... Srsly though, when you look at Gimli imagine that, safe for the belly, all that mass is muscle. From working in the mines, mining metals mainly. And then he's wearing armor too, metal not mithril. Even his stumpy legs must be thick as trunks, considering how they carry all that weight. Even if Aragorn would have had the strength to lift him, on that tiny slope they stood, he'd have fallen. Because physics. But I love the scene so meh.. who cares really.. 😹😹😹
I remember coming across Jason's channel a few years ago and thinking 'wow this guy is really knowledgeable and passionate about this part of history'. I geeked out a bit and discovered he also essentially owned 2000AD. Since then he has become one of my most favourite of people's I never met. That doesn't explain why it took me several months to comment on this video, but thanks Lindy. Another great video!
I think it's fabulous that you used a much-anticipated crossover opportunity to share an obviously shared passion OTHER than the medieval history content that you're mutually known for. It felt very genuine, and I watched every minute despite knowing little about Judge Dredd.
From the way he said that, it kind of sounds like that the fellow who got the five-minute box-ticking "consultation" was George Lucas about the sequels.

Here's my hot take. The Stallone Dredd had a PERFECT MegaCity-1 ... block wars, the futuristic feel, it was wonderful... unfortunately it had Stallone as Dredd. The Karl Urban movie had the PERFECT Dredd, but MegaCity-1 sucked, it was just LA... with a few tall blocks. If only we could take the best of both and merge them! Anyway, that's why I can't write off Stallone's Dredd movie, it's still a window into the Universe that hasn't been as replicated well since.
Totally agree. The stallone film pissed me off at the time but was way more authentic to mega city one. The carl urban film was a good action film but a few highrise blocks and some "chopper was here" graffiti doenst make a good judge dredd film.
I agree. The Karl Urban movie did not have the comic book feel. One thing that the Stallone movie did right was that everything was larger than life. More specifically, edgy, dark and proportionally extreme to the point of becoming satirically comical. The Stallone movie also had a nod to ABC Warriors which I thought was great (ABC Warriors and Dredd canonically exist in the same universe, btw. I don't agree with what's being said about this in the video. From the wiki: "They [ABC Warriors] are the titular heroes of their own series which began before but lived into the far future of Dredd's timeline and have crossed over with various characters from the series").
Stallone didn't suck as Dredd, the writing sucked. He, himself, was pretty good while he had the helmet on. A lot of the problems with that film were the producers/writers insisting on following Hollywood tropes, thus we got Schneider's character and the idea that audiences are paying to see Stallone thus we must "see" Stallone.
That's actually a fair call. Stallone was the wrong actor for the movie and they let him take his head off without his head being massively scarred and altered.
They should make an anthology series, something like Black Mirror, or Love, Death and Robots (whether live-action, or animated, or both/either), set in MegaCity One, of the 'Future Shocks' series; The were already nice, interesting, self-contained stories, so they'd translate well to an anthology series.
I don't think Frodo thinking of the riddle is so bad. They're still dependent on Gandalf's wealth of knowledge, and we see that Frodo is clever enough to survive the journey. Another reason to like the main character is a decent tradeoff for pure accuracy. We know from Bilbo that his family should be smart enough to figure out a riddle.
That's kinda Lindy's point: they changed it from a scene where everyone depends on Gandalf to do thinky part followed by the loss of Gandalf to a scene that shows that Gandalf isn't necessary followed by the loss of Gandalf. When Gandalf falls with the Balrog, the audience reaction should be ... insert Hudson from Aliens: "That's it, man. Game Over."
I think that saying 'Gandalf isn't necessary' is a huge overstatement. Regardless of whether Frodo is intelligent or not, they were 9 people marching toward literal armies that just lost a wizard - only one of five known to exist in the world. Let's be honest, Gandalf was 3/4 their strength and 3/4 their knowledge. One glimmer of wisdom from Frodo didn't overshadow how much Gandalf knew from many millennia of existence. Even without him being their only path to wisdom, Gandalf's 'death' weighed heavy on the Fellowship and broke a glue that held them together. It still felt pretty close to game over - everything Gandalf offered overshadowed one interaction. Having one little glimmer of hope that your may or may not actively remember may have made Galadriel's message a little stronger. Frodo was capable of changing the future. I don't think "we lost everything" is necessarily a more desirable viewpoint than showing the main character has something to work with. Develop your character - show they're useful and improving. Otherwise, it might have felt like Daenerys suddenly being evil. Insufficient development feels... unsatisfyingly convenient.
I really liked Dredd. Sorry though Lindy I'd have to disagree, Dredd said that losing your primary weapon was a fail...but by the end of the film its clear to Dredd and the audience that Anderson's primary weapon wasn't her gun, it was her psi-abilities...so she still passed.
The line (and subplot) of "losing your weapon" was lifted from a hotdog run into the cursed earth with a squad of rookies in the comics. One of the last surviving cadets loses his weapon but saves dredds life, so he gets a pass.
@Haiiry Cake Nope, the exception was about her not wearing her helmet. Lindy said that Dredd would have failed her because she lost her weapon. To me though in the film Dredd realised that her gun wasn't her primary weapon, her psi-abilities were which she didn't loose and so he could pass her without a problem.
Okay, this is amazing. I didn't know Sir Kingsley owned 2000 A.D.! We need a Dredd sequel, that movie was excellent! Judge Dredd, Heavy Metal's FAKK2, Image Comics' Youngbloods and Chaos series, and McFarlane's Spawn are my all time favorites.
I have to say I'm something of a coinsure of your ads. I might be in the minority who listens to each of them at least on the time I watch your videos. This one was wickedly clever, loved the frantic energy and you even got in the bit about cradles that I've come to expect from each one. A Lindy ad without cradles has a lot of work to do compared to it's cradle-having counterparts. Highly interesting content as always. I hope we get some updates about your friend who's fighting in Ukraine. I hope he makes it out ok.
So good to see some love for "The Graveyard Shift". That period of Dredd history, from about The Apocalypse War through to McGruder taking the Long Walk, is its absolute golden age, and Graveyard Shift is slap-bang in the middle of that.
Dredd (2012) was one of the greatest highlights of action cinema in... this geological era, and a sequel of it ranks up there with Firefly season 2 for things whose lack is proof that if there is an omnipotent creator it can at best feel merely ambivalent towards us.
I had a 2000AD hardback annual, 1981. There was a Ro-Busters story in there. The opening two frames were of a young kid with a baseball bat and glove running up to his mum in the street crowing about how he made the team. The second frame had the ground opening up beneath his feet (earthquake) and him falling in screaming, while his mum watches screaming. That's 2000AD for ya :) .
This was a fascinating watch. I'd like to hear more of your movie opinions. Do you think it might be possible to do a stream with Critical Drinker about Dredd? Maybe even include both of you? I think it would be a great match if all the schedules align
They do talk about her losing her gun. She says that she has already failed at one point. Then they go on to finish the mission. So, I think Dredd did in his mind fail her, then gave her a retake.
Please don't let them make a "Judge Dredd" series that isn't really about Judge Dredd. I think people know what I'm taking about. A Judge Anderson series starring Olivia Thirlby could be great. Don't pull a bait and switch on us, though.

OMG I had no idea Jason had such a huge role with Dredd or even any role with the name at all, I've followed this guy for about 2 years now and I am shocked.

@@Call-me-Al Same. I immediately went to tell my wife about this exciting news, since I've shown her some of his medieval clips and her answer was a puzzled expression with: "who's Judge Dredd?" after a decade together I think she's a fail...

For me, the line in LOTR that was an absolute hangnail was "Dwarves are wasted on cross-country! We're very dangerous over short distances!"
Dwarves have short legs and are not very fast, but are cannonically indefatigable marchers.
That section in the book is great.
About short sprints, I can imagine like a crocodile exploding into movement. Short legs /= slow.
Well put 👍
"Looks like meat is back on the menu, boys" is a serious contender for the worst line

I think that Judge Dredd being around for as long as he has been, without a character arc or progression, is easily explained.

Dredd is NOT the story; he is the anvil upon which good stories are forged.
I was so surprised to see him, what a lovely crossover episode this is!

The part about hobbling the faster runners to make everyone equal is the whole point of the short story Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut. It's a great read. It shows up in a LOT of sci-fi compendiums.
I read that when it was still in short pants.
Harrison Bergeron can actually be read as a parody of people's views on communism. I would recommend looking into the writer and some of the scholarship on the story.
What a great interview. I love how the questions went both ways.
Something I liked about the Daredevil show and even Spider-man Homecoming was showing the aftermath of the attack on New York and how some people were coping with having to clean up all of that. It wasn't a large part of the plot of Daredevil, but it was present.
A fun conversation to see--having followed both of you for several years.
So good to hear Jason talk about protecting the legacy of Dredd, especially after seeing the way Halo is being treated right now. After the way Star Wars has been completely destroyed.
Well - two of my favourite RUclipsrs in one video, chatting: a brilliant surprise! More, please!
Doesn't mean he will pass the next one though.
tbh i agree with Lloyd, because if Dredd said something then it would be absolutely unlike him to go back on it, regardless of what happens afterwards
Sweet. I was already a subscriber to both these fine gentlemen. Love the new information.
I'm not a judge dredd nerd but I think dredd is one of the most underrated action movies I've seen, I loved it
If only all guardians of beloved franchises had the same view on building in defences against Hollywood's subversions and efforts of cultural vandalism.
Good to know judge Dredd is in good hands. I thought it predicted the future to a regrettably comedic level
So it's not going to be a Keanu Reeves Ronin type balls up of a fantastic story into Hollywood crud.
Yes, in the hands of Disney he would be pansexual

Very good video. Thank you Lindybeige.
I feel that Lindy managed to get a lot off his chest here.
You didn't like Dredd? It had its flaws sure, but I personally loved it.
@@Dee-nonamnamrson8718 yes, I said with the exception of Dredd (Alex garland scripted), I thought it was the best comic adaptation movie I have seen....shame there was no sequel

You may be right, but getting the distinction of the pronunciation right would have been difficult.
Wasn't expecting the topic on this channel, was a great chat on the franchise! I've only ingested small chunks of the comics over the years, but really feeling an itch to dive headfirst into the whole series
I've never seen or read Judge Dredd but this was a really interesting talk nonetheless. Great video lindy
See if you can download any old AD2000 comics from the 80s. You won't be disappointed!
Oh you don't know what you're missing, go get the magazine, it's fantastic.

Bro even with your attempt, you cannot throw even 50% of your own weight like that.
Only a True knight knows and has experience on how heavy and hard dwarves are to throw.
I think it's fabulous that you used a much-anticipated crossover opportunity to share an obviously shared passion OTHER than the medieval history content that you're mutually known for. It felt very genuine, and I watched every minute despite knowing little about Judge Dredd.
8:20 That's exactly what happens with Kraken. Dredd fails him, the Chief Judge gives him a further test and then passes him. It does not end well.
Yes, I remembered that too. 🙂
*after the cameras stop
Lloyd: So... one last question... how do you _finish writing_ a story?
From the way he said that, it kind of sounds like that the fellow who got the five-minute box-ticking "consultation" was George Lucas about the sequels.
Lindybeige, Modern History TV and 2000 A.D. Superb, Three things ive been a fan of since first viewing, all interconnected. i had no idea Jason owned 2000 A.D. Having being subbed to his channel for quite a while its a nice suprise
I'd rather have another Demolition Man.
That's actually a fair call.
Stallone was the wrong actor for the movie and they let him take his head off without his head being massively scarred and altered.
Last time we have a British man who volunteers to fight in Ukraine, and this time we have a man who bought Judge Dredd.
This channel is amazing.
5:33 Wise words. Unfortunately it happens to often those days. "We paid for yours IP and we can do whatever we want with it."
So happy to see two of my favourite RUclipsrs come together. Great conversation 👍🏻
They should make an anthology series, something like Black Mirror, or Love, Death and Robots (whether live-action, or animated, or both/either), set in MegaCity One, of the 'Future Shocks' series; The were already nice, interesting, self-contained stories, so they'd translate well to an anthology series.
A Dredd Animatrix would be pretty epic.
Oh this is awesome. Two of my favorite history RUclipsrs in one video. I believe I am in for a treat.

In my head canon, the Stallone movie isn't Judge Dredd, he's Judge Derpp.
Wasn't the point that this is still an exception and therefore should be acknowledged as such
The line (and subplot) of "losing your weapon" was lifted from a hotdog run into the cursed earth with a squad of rookies in the comics.
@@harlequinems Ahh that's cool. Only read a few Dredd comics back in the 80s.

Completely agree sir👍
this whole time I've been subscribed to Modern History TV i never knew Jason was the owner of Judge Dredd. He's even cooler than i thought he was.
It's great to see Jason Kingsley back. He's a treasure.
Englander and a Scot over movie ideas. Oh that'd be nice lol
I feel like the FNT crew would enjoy having him on.
Calling the series “Judge Dredd” would obviously be misleading.
So the disdain of the Stallone movie with Dredd taking his helmet off is exactly the same as this paramount+ tv show with Chief taking his helmet off.
