what puts people off, or abandoning a journal, is the time is takes out of your day. It doesn't matter if you have nothing to say, a just a spark of an idea can fill a whole page.

I'm a linguist and I can confirm that writing things by hand activates more areas from the brain than the keyboard writing. In fact, when you're learning a languague one of the recomendations is journaling in that language, writing it by hand

I started my first dairy in 1972, but I didn't formalise my journal habit until 1979. The work is massive, and even more so when I sat down to transcribe the entire collection. It's very therapeutic looking back, but it's painful, and not recommended for the faint of heart. Journalling, is such a part of my pysche now, it's like breathing.

I prefer typing my journal instead of handwriting in it. I find typing gets me to my stream of consciousness faster and I can really tap into what's really bothering me. I've had countless epiphanies while typing because I wrote the sentences quickly without fear of self judgement. The words formed from my keyboard almost as if someone else were typing them. I read these words as I type which is almost like I'm reading the words of a coach.
Another reason why I prefer typing over writing is that I know 100% that no one will get a hold of my journal and read it if it's password protected. I had a very impactful even happen when I was in junior high and my older sister who bullied the hell out of me, found my diary and read it aloud to the whole family. My father (also a big bully) and she would laugh and quote from my journal to poke fun at me. I will never let that level of intrusion happen again, so I have my journal password protected online. That website is my sacred, safe place to be vulnerable and I love it.

I really needed this Clark but, not for the reasons you may think.
I have a brain tumour and have found everything incredibly difficult to do, I just had my first day out of bed in 7 weeks today! I've been wanting to write in a journal for so long but I feel like for the longest time I've been incapable of completing any task..even having a shower can take me all day to work up to because of pain/dizziness etc.
The reminder that journaling is time I can take for myself and I don't need to accomplish it with speed has just taken so much pressure off.
Most days I can barely see so even if I write a page here and there when I'm able I will feel good about it.. its the assembling of my thoughts that counts not the time it takes to get them on paper ❤
Thank you for another wonderful video, meant more to me then I can express x

Journalling is placing value on yourself, investing. Valuing your thoughts, impressions, emotional state, vs just letting life go by unobserved. I regularly search my Evernote journal for past lessons or insights. Perhaps w OCR, one can catalog a digital archive of hand journaled notes and have the best of two worlds.

Journaling changed my life from the inside out. Better, I listened to Clark and others on how to focus my efforts with a goal, a question. You can change for the better and into the best. My journaling helped me be more outgoing, healthier physically and mentally, and to trace back the source of negative habits or thoughts so I could address them with compassion. I even took it further, according to my therapist’s advice, and use it to allow my younger selves to talk out their feelings. Then I show myself care, attention, compassion, and grace. This is a powerful tool.

I've been keeping diaries and journals since I was in 3rd or 4th grade (still have my very first one). 30 years on, I've got at least 20+ diaries. And I can attest to what you say about recurring life lessons and still seeing the same patterns from years ago! I'm not sure what it is, but I think those areas in my life are ones that need more attention or where I need to figure out how to deal with things differently b/c I'm blocked by something or react in the same way to get to that place and just haven't improved upon. But totally agreed, it's a slow learning process that won't necessarily go away in one shot.

Exactly same experience here, journaling since I learned how to write and just never stoped it (I'm in my 30s). I spent like 5 years not reading all my past entries, just adding new ones and then I sat down and litterally spent some days reading everything when I was going thought a tought phase, and the thing that I found in a middle of a depression is something that I have completelly forgotten: love for myself. It changed everything and still does, I have a LOT o fear but I see myself so much more abble now to live the life I want, not the life I got. Fantastic self-improvement, sometimes we overproject stuff and gets messy. Journaling is, in my opinion, a pure source of magic.

completely agree with the 'handwritings have a different energy than seeing typewriting' ! Writing by hand automatically feels which thought I want to prioritize, which words actually matters, sometimes I can see that I want some better words here- things like these brings more clarity towards authentic goal and separates goals that are influenced by others.

Just the inspiration I need. I saw an interview with Paul Theroux who supposedly wrote all of his novels, journals and travel diaries by hand. That's 50+ works, many of which are over 500 pages (typed-out). Inspiring. I find writing by hand to be so tedious, but I'm sure the more you do it the more natural it starts to feel. Also, I don't think there's anything terribly wrong with typing. It just allows you to be a little more reckless.

The Google docs are less impactful but are faster, easier to organize by category and are convenient for noting thoughts and plans (I don't intend to forget) on the fly while the hand journal is where I can really drive certain points home, wrestle with unsupportive thoughts and catalog significant life events. I appreciate these insights and tips and will certainly add them to the repertoire. You're the man Clark!

I have been journaling for awhile now and I have realized that I start out writing about maybe something that upset me and I’m writing and writing and before I realize it I’m writing about something that happened maybe in my childhood or teenage years and by the time I’m done I stop and wonder how the heck did I trigger a memory from then and I end up feeling like I must have had it penned up and journaling is a way I unlock and move on from it. I have also discovered that when I’m writing about a problem I’m facing at that moment and like you said as your writing you find out that you knew all along well that happens to me or just the opposite while I’m writing I figure out a solution right then and there. Thank you so much for your videos they really do help me.

So is your handwriting the ONLY thing that is unique about you? Are you just a cookie cutter if you don't write by hand?
When Maya Angelou died, the Schomburg Center in Harlem set up an exhibit case of letters that had passed between her and other Black luminaries (e.g. Malcolm X). Every single one of them was typewritten. If a person has no unique voice except in his or her handwriting, why bother?

I happened to be journaling since 2016 that was one of the advice from a counselor that I saw and also a much better way then place it on Facebook and also mostly it had many views as self conversation that now been dealing with those options from those religious fanatics on RUclips and Tiktok by now keep saying to ignore them and thanks for the advice.

I have journaled for many years! I started doing it very seriously 21 years ago and I threw that lot out after about ten years when I had answers I was looking for!I started again and threw out the second lot and I am on the first journal of this next series! I think journaling is a natural thing and I do it in my own way! I think we find our own way as we live our own lives!

I suffer from writer's cramp, which means I can write in longhand only briefly and with great effort. I also revise a lot, and in my years of writing letters in longhand, that meant throwing out lots of sheets of letter paper and starting with a fresh sheet. MUST I still limit my writing to pen and paper?
Since you yourself brought up the analogy of letters, I wrote lots of paper letters over two decades and received many in return, before writer's cramp totally defeated me and word processing came to the rescue. I wrote in longhand because I was a bad typist. But the letters I received were nearly all typewritten, and I don't know about you, but I treasured those letters. The letter writers had poured themselves into those letters, through the thoughts they expressed and the words they chose.
Or take the analogy of cooking. Over the decades, all sorts of things have gone wrong for me in the kitchen. Sometimes the stove wouldn't light. Sometimes the hot water wouldn't run. Sometimes the kitchen drainpipe would get damaged so that I had to do the dishes in a basin and empty the dirty water in the bathroom. Would my cakes have been better if I had continued to bake them in a half-functioning kitchen?
Once after I saw too much of this suggestion that it isn't a letter unless it's written by hand, I emailed the Letter Writers' Alliance, asking for their opinion. They wrote back saying of course, a typewritten or word-processed letter is still a letter.
So tell me again, why is longhand always better than digital?

I have restarted journalling for one reason it helps get rid of the bad thoughts out my head and on to paper. That as well as my shrink wants to see them to help me follow my mental health journey which may be kinda bad for her to read at parts.
