Meatloaf's genre was not musicals, but you're close. What he does is rock opera. And nobody does it better.
Not only did he have an amazing voice, he was an actor, a true performer and an entertainer. His videos weren't just your typical 80’s music video’s, they were works of art in their own right. God rest his soul. He will be missed.
She says “sooner or later you’ll be screwin around” and he responds “I won’t do that”. No matter what, that’s the thing he won’t do is cheat on her. Such an amazing artist and storyteller, gone too soon
It’s so repetitive (in a good way!) the “that”s get lost. I had to look it up, and I’ve had the musical cast recording on loop for a week.
Forget the way he feels right now
Forgive himself if they don’t go all the way tonight
Do it better than he does it with her
Stop dreaming of her every night of his life
See it’s time to move on
Screw around.
He got his start in musical theater. Thats where his style comes from. He was in The Rocky Horror Picture Show movie
Meat Loaf was one of a kind performer. Jim Steinman wrote the songs. Try Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad.
I love this song!!!
Jim Steinman played the piano in Meat Loaf's songs
I second this, watch 2 outta 3 ain't bad. It's probably my favourite Meatloaf song.
Dana Patrick was the model in the video. The actual singing is done by Lorraine Crosby.
He sang. Songs were written by Jim Steinman who also played piano. Michael Bay directed the video. The video is a play on beauty and the beast. Hope this helps.
He's one of the musicians I actually shed a tear for when he died, along with Michael Jackson, Prince, and Tom Petty. He just put it all out there and he just spoke to me. I remember when Jim died, Meat was just heart-broken. Now they're together again making more music. FYI, he used to watch some of these reactions and interact in the comments. RIP Meat ❤
For me Meat and Mo and Robin Gibb. If Barry goes before me I will weep again. Loved Meat since BOOH dropped when I was "barely 17" and I had just met my one and only. Meat and the Brothers Gibb helped me grieve when he died 4 years ago.
We had such good music back in those days. I miss those days they were great
It was a rock opera like Queen
He was also in the Musical "Rocky Horror Picture Show"
He was also in Black Dog that had Patrick Swayze and Randy Travis in it.
was also in the broadway musical Hair along with many movies one that comes to mind is the Dad in Jack Black Pick of destiny!
You've heard this because its a VERY famous song.
Meatloaf was multi-talented! When he passed away about a year ago, we lost a living legend. You'll need to see his stage performances on RUclips. He was a total showman who interacted with the audience.
Two Out of Three has to be next!!! 😁
Bonnie Tyler: 'Total eclipse of the heart' and 'holding out for a hero'. You see where the comparison to her voice comes from
Also written by Jim Steinman…
He will be missed. "Objects in the Rearview Mirror.", Lorraine Crosby sang the vocals. Meatloaf just amazing and as you can tell, his music will live forever.
That is one of a very few songs where I think the musical cast recording works better. Each verse is sung by a different person, so they can really lean into the different vibes.
The singing is obviously not even close, but the stories hit me better.
Every Meat Loaf music video is a mini movie. He made my teenage life great. Miss him so much
Meatloaf was so theatrical in his performances and it was just so fun and inspiring to watch….definitely a legend
Yes, the tempo changes are a signature. Another signature is that most of his hits have some clever play on words. The woman in this video is a model used for the video. She is not the singer.
Meatloaf and Jim Steinman were fans of tradition opera, which in composed in a "movement to movement" style, as opposed to "verse - chorus - verse" style. They performed with real texture and complexity in all of their compositions. ✌️🕊️
THINK
BEAUTY & THE BEAST
As a Rock Opera !!
Meatloaf was nicknamed by his dad and has been called that his whole life, he’s always been a big boy. He’s been a teacher, a police officer, and a broadway singer, hence his operatic style of singing and songs which was popular in the late 70’s and 80’s when rock opera was popular. The song two out of three ain’t bad is my favorite.
I REMEMBER EVERYTHING!!! I remember every little thing as if it happened only yesterday.....
We miss you Meat. 💔
He did a great duet with Cher, though it's often considered Meatloaf featuring Cher, it's called Dead Ringer for Love.
Lorraine Crosby sang the vocals in this video and model Dana Patrick the actress lip-synced the lyrics.
Patti Russo sang them in his concerts.
Meatloaf created his unique genre of rock opera.
His response when she says "you'll be screwing around" is "I'd do anything for love but I won't do that."
My take is that even if he fell out of love with her he wouldn't screw around on her to obtain love from someone else.
He also was a guest investor in episodes of Ghost Hunters.
React to Johnny Cash singing Ira Hayes and you will hear absolute raw emotions of sorrow and anger.
think of Meat Loaf as the name of the band. Jim is the songwriter and Meat Loaf (the person) is the singer.
The "That" is different for everyone. As Meat Loaf said when asked about it, it could be cleaning windows or doing dishes. Whatever that one thing is for you.
His voice is a heldentenor, or heroic tenor. Which is rather rare. He was offered a place in an opera company, which he turned down.
Meat loafs music is only half the picture, his acting is amazing as well, I think his greatest roll is Bob from fight Club. IS NAME IS ROBERT PULSAN!
This song was also written by Jime Steinman. He has written some of his own songs, and has sung other people's songs, but his best known songs were all written by Jim Steinman.
Jim Steinman has written for many other performers, probably most famously "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and "Holding out for a Hero"for Bonnie Tyler (who you said you didn't know when it was suggested she was considered for the song), "It's All Coming Back To Me Now" for Celine Dion and "Making Love Out of Nothing at All" for Air supply. He also co-wrote "No Matter What" for Boyzone with Andrew Lloyd Webber.
As far as Jim and Meat are concerned, they met when Meat auditioned for a musical (yea there is a reason these sound like musical numbers) he wrote called "More Than You Deserve." (the Title song, Meat has also performed). Jim felt that Meat was a great fit, and had real portential. Jim was also writing a musical based on Peter Pan, but it never got approval from the Author's estate. Bat Out of Hell was basically a concept album that was put together based on some of the stuff Jim had written. Eventually there was a Bat Out of Hell Musical which featured songs from all 3 "Bat Out of Hell" albums, as well as the Dead Ringers Album as well as songs that were recorded by other people.
The woman in the video is a model, that actual singer (Lorraine Crosby) in the video was a session singer, who was on The Voice UK (and didn't even get a chair turn) -
Jim Steinman came up with the songs and created the stories. Meat Loaf was the face and voice of the stories that Jim Steinman wanted to tell. Todd Rundgren brought the whole thing to life, usually with Jim Steinman telling him how he wanted it to look and sound. The sound of a motorcycle revving in "Bat Out of Hell" was actually Todd Rundgren on guitar. The tempo changes could have been from Jim Steinman as song writer or could have been from Todd Rundgren as producer. When Jim Steinman died, Meat Loaf said, "We didn't know each other. We were each other."
Jim and Meat are a perfect example of how your soul mate doesn't need to be your romantic partner. When Jim died I said to my husband, "I'm worried that MeatLoaf won't last long without him" .
To the contrary, she doesn't want him to do something, but she's been hurt before and is just waiting for him to dissapoint her. She said sooner or later you'll be... he says no, i'm better with you. She is being hard to convince, so he's frustrated and trying harder to convince her.
The change-ups are theatrical, operatic and dramatic effects, they have worked for centuries.
You will have to start with the album, Bat out of Hell, which is still selling well all these years later, then listen start to end, before doing the next...
Jim Steinman wrote albums of sequential story songs. When Meatloaf was too busy with work, and Jim had a new album done, needing it recorded, to get paid, though he wasn't too keen on being the singer, he did that one himself.
The entire Bat out of Hell album was written by Jim Stienman! And it was produced by Todd Rungrin
Jim Steinman wrote the songs and is the driving force behind the music and videos. Steinman also wrote for many other artists (Bonnie Tyler (Holding Out For A Hero & Total Eclipse Of The Heart), Air Supply (Making Love Out Of Nothing At All), Barry Mannilow (Read 'em & Weep), Barbara Streisand (Left In The Dark Again) & Celine Dion (It's All Coming Back To Me Now)
Opera trained, busted his music chops on Broadway he performed to the back row. His piano player wrote and arranged most of the music
My all-time favourite by Meatloaf is "Objects in the rear view mirror"
The verses had a structure:
I will A
I will B
I will never C
Then it goes into the chorus, so the "anything" that he won't do is different with each verse.
Was able to see him twice in concert. Fabulous show..
Meat Loaf "For Crying Out Loud"
His music was known as rock opera. Most songs told a story. After every show he would collapse and require oxygen. He gave it all on stage at every show. One of a kind definitely.
Before he became a recording artist he performed in several musicals, when Rocky horror picture show was made into a film he kept his part there too.
You need to check out Bonnie Tyler. She was another of the singers that was famous for singing Jim Steinman's songs. She did "Holding Out for a Hero" in 1984. Adam Lambert also realeased "Holding Out for a Hero" just this week.
He says what he wouldn't do multiple times.. I'll never do it better than I do it with you 2. Never stop dreaming of you every night of my life. 3. After a while you'll forget everything, And you'll see that it's time to move on. 4. Sooner or later you'll be screwing around.
Meat was the driving force to all the creative aspects of the music and videos
This is where you heard this, this video was like every other video played on MTV at this time it was this video and what ever other video MTV had they made sure everyone heard this.
Bonnie Tyler is one of the few non-Meatloaf singers that got a Jim Steinman song of her own. "Total Eclipse of the Heart "
He won't stop loving her, dreaming of her, cheat on her or leave her.
Meatloaf was a very talented and multifaceted performer. He was always very animated and hence the theatrical nature of both his videos, and his live performances. Add to that his acting credits and top it all off with that magnificent voice. He was undeniably a “give it his all” entertainer.
RIP to the legendary Meatloaf. ♥️
✌🏼😎
Yeah, the blackboard and pointer NEVER stated what he wouldn't do. He just kept saying "that" It was a funny representation.
He wouldn't cheat on her and leave her. It's said very clear.
Meatloaf "Its all coming back to me now'
The video is based on Beauty and the Beast! The "that" is many different things! First he'll never lie to her! Then hell never forget the way she feels right now. Then he'll never forgive himself if they don't go all the way tonight. Then he'll never do it better than he does it with her. Then he'll never stop dreaming of her every night of his life. Then finally he'll never screw around! There's a live performance of this from The Grand Gala Du Disc (a Dutch TV show) that's awesome and worth watching even on your own time!
Jim Steinman wrote for Celine Dion too. Try "Its all Coming Back To Me"
fell in love with him back in the '70's, broke my heart when he passed.. did get to see him live though, such a brilliant concert... A brilliant actor, many films under his belt, TV roles too.. was Eddie in Rocky Horror show.. not watched fight club...one of his last TV appearances was in an Episode of Ghost Hunters.. he was very very interested in that field too. Meat Loaf was a perfectionist and would not give up until he was 100% satisfied.... So looking forwards to your reactions to his music and learning more about him and his life.. just a 40+ years worth of work..
This video was a great play on Beauty and the Beast with a hint of Phantom of the Opera and Dracula in it.
Meatloaf was the king of Rock Opera. His ability to take you through a rollercoaster of emotions with his songs was unparalleled. An absolute legend.
He won't do that, he won't lie to her.
I won't do that means I won't cheat on you , listen to the end
Love this song.. I'm a beauty and beast fan.. He won't cheat on her and leave her.. that's what he won't do.
Meatloaf was, first and foremost, an actor - stage and film (Hair, the Musical and Rocky Horror are two examples). He and Steinman were a match made in heaven.
If you LISTEN to the lyrics he tells you exactly what he won't do in each verse.
1. I'll never lie to you and that's a fact
But I'll never forget the way you feel right now
2. I'll never do it better than I do it with you
So long, so long
3. I'll never stop dreaming of you
Every night of my life, no way
4. After a while you'll forget everything
It was a brief interlude and a midsummer night's fling
And you'll see that it's time to move on
I won't do that
5. I know the territory, I've been around
It'll all turn to dust and we'll all fall down
Sooner or later you'll be screwing around
I won't do that
this is the short version of this song on the album its 12 minutes long with a great guitar solo lead in The entire Bat out of hell album is a masterpiece
You're right two out of three ain't bad. Was an awesome song we're terribly going to miss him he had such a beautiful voice and the fam that you're watching right now was on MTV meatloaf you're sadly Miss and we love you your music will live on because we're your fans
Jim Steinman did give most of his songs to Meatloaf, but he also gave at least one to Celine Dion, "It's All Coming Back to Me Now".
Bonnie Tyler sings "Total Eclipse of the Heart" along with a lot of other great tunes.
He was in Rocky Horror Picture Show where he meets a tragic end.
RIP Meatloaf! 😭 I remember when the Bat Out Of Hell came out. Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad is excellent.
This song will forever be a song that I identify with as the man I am ,have been and will always be . RIP my brother, you touched my soul !
This is a great video, very theatrical and tells a story. I’ve always loved him and his songs. He was a great soul taken from us too early.
Meat Loaf was always one of my favorite go-tos for listening to great music.
And loved his acting. Loved his role in Fight Club.
"His name is Robert Paulson"
Bonnie Tyler also sang songs written by Jim Steinman. Check out Total Eclipse of the Heart.
Just a few because there's not enough space. OK, let's go - "Dead Ringer for Love (featuring Cher), Heaven Can Wait, Objects in the Rearview Mirror..., Hot Summer Night, Rock and Roll Dreams..., Two Out of Three..., Life is a Lemon..., Hot Patootie". Like I said, just a few songs.
So, Meatloaf was also an actor that was in many different movies and TV series. I think you should watch the video "Kickapoo" with the band "Tenacious D", Jack Black, an actor/singer/comic was the lead singer, and starred in the musical/comedy "The Pick of Destiny" that features a cameo of Meatloaf and also Ronnie James Dio, another amazing rock performer, I laughed until I cried is all I can say!🤣
You're right about his change in tempo. His songs/performances were very theatrical. What a great performer!
Yep Jim Steinman wrote the songs and some of them he wrote drawing from Meat’s real life experiences and his own. He also wrote Eclipse of the Heart sung by Bonnie Taylor - epic song.
When he says I won’t do that he means cheating on her if you listen close to the end of the song where she is saying different things one o f the things is cheating he says I won’t do that
His name is Robert Paulson
Meatloaf is a legend! His Bat out of Hell album is the best. Honestly any of his songs you could react to “You took the words right out of my mouth”, “Read em and weep” “Bat out of hell” “Two out of three ain’t bad” all amazing! My mom told me once that the Red Scarf he carries with him was given to him by is wife (1st wife) I think as a good luck thing and he always carried scarfs since then it became a signature thing, but I don’t know how true that is since I wasn’t born till 89” lol but I was lucky enough to have parents that played all genres and time period music from Motown to Rock, Country, R&B, Pop, Rap, Classical, you name it it was played in the house. So I find it very entertaining to watch someone react to music they’ve never heard. And I love your reactions cause you give an opinion but also do research about it and the artists.
*Jim* Steinman also wrote "Total Eclipse of the Heart," which Bonnie Tyler recorded.
Thank you for reviewing Meatloaf. He's the God of Rock Opera. Please, please do Two Out of Three Ain't Bad. Thank you so much.
MeatLoaf 'Two out of Three Ain't Bad' is a great.
He's truly an artist and such an amazing emotional performer. The first time I took real notice of him was when I watched a live performance on tv of him performing this song. I remember being pulled to get up and sit right in front of the tv. I had goosebumps, a lump in my throat, and thought "My GAWD ...WOW! THIS GUY!! I GET IT!" He's absolutely the real deal!!!!" Yeah, felt his heart and his layers of talent were undeniable. I recommend looking up any of the live performances of this song. I just did and it still hit me the same way. Goosebumps, teared up, and full-on lump in my throat.
As you are looking for various music from MeatLoaf, one of his amazing songs is one of his 'newer' songs "Couldn't Have Said It Better Myself". The video isn't as theatrical as his others, but it's great. For his 'lesser known' songs, I am quite fond of "Not A Dry Eye In The House."
I like your style of reacting!! You look into the background and I learn interesting things!! I think you'll love his music video of 'it's all coming back to me'!💝💞
This is ABSOLUTELY ONE OF MY TOP FAVORITE SONGS EVER AND I use to be an extremely good pianist but had a life threatening and icu vent etc car accident 8/8/2009 MOST of my memories returned and weren’t suppose to. The brain is an unbelievable organ. BUT I ABSOLUTELY CANNOT EVEN PLAY CHOP STICKS (hurts a lot) so NEVER TAKE ANYTHING FOR GRANTED BECAUSE IN A BLINK OF AN EYE IT CAN CHANGE, but since I gained even in the last year back some memories that well that part of my brain was like a stroke and said it was still dead. GOD CONTROLS EVERYTHING I AM 45 years worth of miracles. ANYWAYS I WANT TO PLAY THIS PIECE AGAIN SOOOOOOOO BAD!!!!!
BUT HIS VOICE the way he does it is TO ME WHAT EMINEM DOES WHEN HE RAPS!!!!! You can feel Slim Shady, Marshall, Eminem, Playful, mad, Serious etc. I always think a couple good examples are of course “Lose Yourself”, “Love The Way You Lie”, “Phenomenal””Kings Never Die” “Guts Over Fear” “Crack A Bottle” “Hail Mary” “Soldier” “TIL I Collapse” recently “Fall” “Venom””oh forgot “I Need A Doctor” “Higher” I could go all day with him.......”Beautiful” man THAT VIDEO gets me like with “Not Afraid” to “Shake That” “Welcome to Detroit” “Not Alike” “Killshot” “Caterpillar” “Fast Lane”
BUT MEATLOAF DOES THAT WITH HIS VOICE AND DELIVERIES!!!!! Just my opinion. He was REALLY NICE I met him when I Worked for Peavey Electronics (I am from and still live in Mississippi where Peavey Electronics is) at NAMM and he chatted with me under videos. Made me sad but he’s not in pain anymore. Humble man brilliant
Two Outta Three Ain't Bad...my fav Meatloaf song
This is his take on Beauty and the beast
My interpretation of his character in this video was at least loosely based on the phantom from Phantom of the Opera. If not aware, Phantom of the Opera was a hugely successful Broadway musical. Meatloaf loved acting too. Just to name a couple: 1) He was in the Brad Pitt movie Fight Club with an odd character. 2) He had a role in the cult classic movie Rocky Horrow Picture Show.
Meat Leaf didn't just do songs by Jim Steinman', and many of his other songs are very enjoyable but most people would agree that his work with Jim Steinman is his best.
Or his You Took The Words Right Out of My Mouth
I'm happy that you changed your opinion of Meat Loaf but you still didn't apologize .
Ah, glad you're back, already! This was the song that introduced me to Meat Loaf when I was 6 in 1993. I thought it was the most incredibly beautiful thing I'd ever heard: the piano, the lyrics, that Voice! Thank you for not comparing him to anyone else; to me, it's such a unique, raw, otherworldly voice and nothing else has given me that same thrill, joy and wonder since.
As to your questions about the visual creativity, with the Paradise video, I think it was a collaborative idea between Meat and Jim, with them both coming from a musical stage background.
The two men are so different in personality and upbringing, but when they got together to make music, it's magic. Meat called Jim his "brother", as Meat didn't really have any close immediate family when he ran away from home at 18 after his mother died. They had their differences and disagreements, but they kept coming back and working together, and they were in regular contact in the few years before Jim died in April 2021.
Next recommendation for Meat Loaf + Jim Steinman has to be "Bat Out of Hell". So many tempo changes you'll need a seatbelt! ;)
PS: you said you've never heard of Bonnie Tyler - Jim wrote her biggest hit, too: "Total Eclipse of the Heart", which is also worth checking out.
This is simply stunning ❤
You haven't seen "The Rocky Horror Picture Show"!?!? You should do a reaction video on that. I was a teen when I first saw it (I'm now in my 60s) and I still remember it as a truly mind expanding film. A lot of people feel the same way, which is why it's a cult classic with midnight screenings at various theatres to this day.
He is my absolute favorite singer. This video is fantastic but not sure who produced it. Almost all his songs were written by Jim Stienmen. You should check out Bat Out Of Hell next.
The day we lost Meat is a day I'll never forget, just like the day Elvis died.
The one thing a lot of us are truly grateful for is that Meat talked to us every day, right up until the day he passed.
We knew he was sick, we knew we might not see him again but he was right there, keeping everyone updated and steadily spreading the love from his big beautiful heart!
Things he wouldn't do for love in the song:
But I'll never forget the way you feel right now
But I'll never forgive myself if we don't go all the way tonight
But there'll never be no turnin' back
And I'll never do it better than I do it with you, so long, so long
But I'll never stop dreamin' of you every night of my life, no way
"You'll see that it's time to move on" -- I won't do that
"Sooner of later you'll be screwin' around" -- I won't do that
Edit: You do get to this eventually.
Puts on an amazing stage show, was lucky enough to see him preform here in Belfast Northern Ireland.Still have his cassette tape from way back in 80s.Think the UK and Ireland could relate more with his music over the USA,as his style and Jim's Lyrics could mybe be misconstrued by some.
His song 2 out of 3 is a steady song and good. You will get to it.... Lol Great job.
I find true joy in watching your facial expressions when listening to meatloaf these first few times. As the anniversary of his death approaches to see you enjoy and appreciate his wonderful voice and videos brings me happiness.
You're a Packers fan?? Hell yeah man!! I grew up on meatloaf. Born in Brasil, grew up in WI!! This is his best song IMO.
It is important to know that this song came 15 years after Paradise By the Dashboard Lights and his voice was still strong.
For a different Meatloaf style, try Objects in the Rearview Mirror
Bonnie Tyler sang ' Holding out for a Hero'.
I am surprised that you have never heard of Bonnie Tyler. Her Total Eclipse of the Heart was number one in both USA and England (written by Jim Steinman also), that is a fun little music video also, you should check it out.
Your watching the MTV version, which is an amazing version, but when you got a lot of time listen to the album version, be sure to bring something to eat cause it's long and epic.
