I like this guy, he seems like one of those neighbors I can end up talking to for hours just by saying hi while taking out my recycling or something, lmao.
Funny, my last thought before I clicked you was- one of the things I look forward to most is a warm sunny room on cold winter day and you started with it :)
Totally agree with your top ten. I had an 8x12 greenhouse at my home in Windsor On. and I used to love going into it during the winter. I tried wintering over some of the garden flowers and also start new flowers from seeds with limited success. There is a bit of a learning curve you need to go through when owning a greenhouse, and I wasn't able to really get good at it before I was forced to sell my home and relocate. Needless to say I really miss my greenhouse.
You covered all the things I need including the therapy. I've been researching for about a year (actually much longer) on this and came upon a thousand reasons why it might not be right for me. But, now I'm learning about the technology that can make it work for temperature fluctuations, which changes things. Your enthusiasm about just having a warm sunny place to go to work with plants in dead of winter just got me very interested in giving this more consideration!
I never comment on videos. That was a great video. A classic. One for the ages. Loved the passion/common sense/mental health/love of gardening "mash up". Very rare and just very good. 10/10 from me.
@@dlmatt4125 Ya got same one. Did some modifications to mine like other people said and it's on part of my deck. My hubby was going to custom build one, but due to this virus, we felt it would be a bad idea as he would have needed to go into store too often. So, we bought one from Harbor Freight. Only other modification we need to make is on the door, does not slide well. But other then that, it's not too bad.
I wish I could share your enthusiasm. My dear hubby bought me an 6 x10 greenhouse in Feb. Got it all set up and I'm feeling so overwhelmed. And the more I search the interwebs (ha) the worse it's getting. I am starting out small, hoping I will learn a little something more as time goes on. Zone 5B here. I was thinking I could strictly grow in a greenhouse only. We have a LARGE black walnut tree in our yard................BOOOOOOOO! And some other issues which make a traditional garden impossible. I tried some potted veggies on the patio last year and that was a bust. I am at a loss. I'm getting to old and running out of time to figure out what I need to do. BUUUUUUUTTTTTT, Great Video!
Nice video. I am enjoying all of these as well since building my greenhouse. Its my sanctuary. I love spending time in there with my toddler explaining everything to him as he samples the dirt. #12 Bonding with your child.
I was hemming and hawing about accepting an old greenhouse from a store that is going out of business. I thought I just didn't have time for it. Now I am getting it, setting it up, and here in SE Wisconsin, I shall lie on a beach chair in January and read a book. Who needs to plant a thing??
Those are all very good reasons. 2 more reasons for me are: 1: I cannot go to Hawaii so I can bring Hawaii temps to me. 2: I will also use my greenhouse as a source of income when I retire! Great stuff my friend! Chuck
Hi and great video, I have a HF 6X8 and I know it's small but I too use it for my therapeutic area and like you said just to sit and enjoy the plants during our cold Pacific northwest winter months.
You're right. I didn't think about it before. What I took as indifference by friends and family was more that they truely had no idea what I was talking about since none of them had ever owned a greenhouse.
Other reasons I can think of: space to cure squashes and sweet potatoes, dry herbs, (and air-dry laundry). Also, winter tomatoes! not just growing in them in winter, but holding the varieties that keep fresh when the greens are hung inside a warm place, so ripening green tomatoes. Storing garden stuff that needs to stay dry and/or unfrozen (tarps, potting mix, etc.) And, even if it's not warmed up, just a place to keep the nursery/potting supplies.

Good points! But do you think the air is dry enough for the laundry? I remember my grandparents' greenhouse as a warm and humid place.
One problem I found out after building my green house, too SMALL, and it's 18'x18'. Mainly because of the #1 good reason. Brought plants in from outside to over winter. But, the hibiscus bloomed all winter, so that's nice. The other problem, outside plants brought in a few bugs, spider mites & aphids, that loved it in there. But all 10 reasons are excellent reasons to have a green house.
Wis.Gardener if you wait until the last minute to bring plants inside many times the bugs have been killed off because of the chill...also hose them off with some dish detergent in your hose sprayer that you use for fertilizing
You´re a wonderfull person !!! I agree with you in each point and you´ve convinced me to built a greenhouse. Thank you for your inspiration and encouragment !!!
GREAT VIDEO. I just got a 10x12 harbor freight greenhouse 🎉🎊🎉🎊 I am so excited!! You mentioned lights do you have a video on the lights ? And where you get them? What do you think of having a wood stove for heat in the green house.... we are in zone 7a
Haven't used a wood stove for heat. I would think it would work but might be hard to regulate it. As for lights, I just use hanging T-8 shop lights but rarely use them. In winter, greens don't need a ton of light so only turn them on when it's very cloudy. Good luck with your new greenhouse
Great 10 reasons! I am in zone 7 as well and just got myself a greenhouse what kind of heater do you suggest and can I start seeds out there this time of year?
+Louisa Agate I just use a 1500 watt electric heater. But only on very cold nights just to keep things above 40. I have a Q&A video coming up that will answer that very question.
Orchids, the largest single plant genre on the planet, is reason enough to have a greenhouse. With a waterfall and small pond. Build a small landing board on the wall of your greenhouse and use a small portion of a plastic queen excluder(to keep out larger flying insects like wasps and hornets) to allow honeybees to pollinate your greenhouse food sources. A two inch space is enough to allow access for pollinators. Do not swat honeybees. they dont care about what you are doing as long as you do not disturb what they are doing. Collecting resources.
@Tinyteacher1111 easy to do. Saw a video with a beehive built into an outward facing wall. The bees could go outside but the actual hive was inside a small room. Keeping them warm in winter but having access to blooms in winter in that room. Like a sunroom. Make sure the hive entrance faces east or west.
#11 A greenhouse full of plants has fresh clean air that is full of oxygen... and nitrous oxide! (Laughing gas). It literally does make you feel good. : P Great video. I miss my old greenhouse and am looking at getting the 10x12 from harbor freight as well. I am thinking two medium sized aquaponics systems with either ornamental or edible fish (Growing lots of greens) along one long wall, a largish in-ground lemon and orange tree growing tall in the middle, and a series of raised beds with bell peppers all along the other wall. Did you know they can live up to 3 years! Just have to keep the frost off of them. I am betting that 5 years in... the money saved would pay for a new $630 greenhouse a time or two every year. That is just food savings. Not counting the others you just mentioned.
Hey OYR! I think I heard in one of your videos that you're from Illinois? I'm from Kane/McHenry County area. I'm sure you're very selective about who you bring into your circle but maybe you would like to do a video at my startup Market Garden this summer? I'm very interested to know what area you are in because I'd love to collaborate and learn from you. Ive got so many questions. Thanks - Kyle (ill also post this on your page as well in case you dont see it here)
Jacolyn's orchids on you tube has a greenhouse and overwinter her goldfish in a small solid pond. She uses the water from then to water her orange and her lemon trees. She has a dehumidifier that Empties into the pond. She has her home in British Columbia and it is presently below zero...minus 19 or lower. She uses double layer of plastic and use that attrition insulation used in homes... she had oranges all year round. She over winters her geraniums and grows seedlings for veggie garden. She says everyone shoukd have a greenhouse. She has even grown a few pineapples
When you refer to being in 5B how do you find out what area you are in? Because that sure seems like it would help me I'm about to build a greenhouse using a frame from an outdoor canopy it's a big metal frame that pops out and it has a steel frame that would work great for a starter I'm only in a rental so I need something that I can remove otherwise I would put something more permanent but I am really craving to Garden in a greenhouse for my first time I think that I will learn a lot and I think it will provide a lot more fun for me and I won't have to stop in the winter
A greenhouse is in my future. A contractor friend of mine gave me six sets of thermal pane sliding glass door panels. I hope to get the structure together this fall. Is that a Harbor Freight greenhouse? I was considering purchasing one, but the drawback was the panels degrade over time in the sun. Do you find that a problem? Can you get replacement panels for it? Thanks for your time sir. Jerry of Pine Meadows Hobby Farm.
Great video! I moved and miss mine terribly. Only a matter of time before I put up another one. I will be doing a complete video on my new greenhouse, I can't wait!!
my vent windows slide off to one side with the wind and get tweaked when the auto arms close. Is there a hard ware fitting to keep the window from sliding over?
Academics have done studies on the therapeutic value of pets and have found them to be very therapeutic. They should study the therapeutic value of growing 🌱 plants and couple that with eating many of the plants that you grow and determine how much longer growing and eating of plants adds to your life.
Anybody with a south-facing concrete house/retaining wall can have a greenhouse and small vertical garden. Minimal area. Attach a small greenhouse on the wall (half greenhouse). Get a Harbor Freight greenhouse assembly kit, half the unit, extend its length x2, and you can have 10-40 feet long x 6-8 feet high vertical gardening on the wall, plus any shelved greenery against the greenhouse outer structure, and have a greenhouse to boot! Half greenhouse design has sliding doors on each side, so there are no entrance problems. Could even put it against the house wall. Expand the patio by enclosing it in a greenhouse, and have even greater heating cost savings in winter time. You have an excellent growing area (should be no housing authority prohibitions). Also any south-facing kitchen wall, a south arboretum/aviary/bay window ... can have a vertical garden and half greenhouse. Make the house/room the greenhouse! Or hang pots from the ceiling/beams, or even a small hanging potted vertical ladder garden. All is possible.
If you had a stone wall on one or two sides of the green house which is a thermal accumulator, stone, brick cement, then it would absorb heat during the day and let it off at night and you would not need heating. Ditto tanks full of water, water might not seem, instinctively, to be a thermal accumulator but it is. Maybe biggish pots, square ones full of wet earth would be also serve as they have water in them without being absolutely, just, only water.
I use gallon milk jugs. Painted black to absorb more heat, filled with water. Keeps the heat up rather well. I also use stones for my 4x8 raised beds. Put them in the firepit & let them absorb the heat.
Im with you on not being a doomsdayer, but there are realities to consider.. the most likely disaster would be a financial disaster for most poeple living in the US ... but, there are natural disasters that happen ALL the time around the globe... clearly, coastal and other areas that get floods are probably the most common disasters in the USA, I believe ... then there is fire... tornadoes in some areas... and poof, your greenhouse might not be around. But, in an economic downturn, you are golden. But, even if you lost your greenhouse, the knowledge of how to grow is ALWAYS beneficial.
Thanks! Now I need a bigger greenhouse, or an oceanfront house in a warm climate! I’m in Michigan, and now have Lyme, which is making me miserable. I sure could use a time-out! 🌷💫
We're buying a house on a 1/2 acre in N. Texas. We want to grow as much as we can of various fruits and veggies. Never done a garden before and don't know where to start. We want to go greenhouse for sure. Here is our main question, how do we know what size greenhouse to build AND how much of which plants to grow for our use? We're an active couple.
A greenhouse in N Texas, just like here in S Oregon is usually only used in the winter. It just gets too hot in the summer. And in your climate I would suggest there are tons of things to grow outdoors all year long like spinach, lettuce, kale etc. As for how much that is different for everybody
I am agree totaly with your top ten, thanks for share, my passion is artístic paint(am graphic designer), and carpentry too, so, I'll try to build one for my wife, she loves plants, colors, vegetables, FELICIDADES !!! from Aguascalientes México
Live the video! Building a greenhouse right now. You do pull your shirt a bit though, something to be conscious of :). no need to be nervous you're doing great 👍
Thanks, Not nervous in front of the camera at all. I had stomach surgery and in serious pain when anything touched my stomach, even my shirt. Took me over a year to recover. That's why you see in all my videos I wear baggy shirts
I'm sorry for all these questions but one more thing what about the summer time? When it gets really hot? Because I live in North Alabama and we get very high temperatures it's been a hundred degrees with 80% humidity in the last week and I'm afraid that if I have a greenhouse I might end up just providing a nice little oven to cook my plants is there a good way to cool it? Maybe have a inline fan that sucks the hot air out from the top?
My mother and I have a screened pool enclosure. Since we got rid of the pool, I been trying to figure out how to convert the enclosure into a greenhouse so I can grow herbs and veggies all year. I want the acrylic paneling, but I'm clueless as to measuring and building it. Any recommendations will be very much appreciated.
How much did you pay for your greenhouse and where did you buy it? I found one on fb for free just needed to replace a few glass panels unfortunately my wife think my gardening is dumb and claim if I brought it home she'll trash it. I plan to build or buy one when she visits her family for 2 months in jun. By time she gets back it'll be too late and there'll be plants growing.
+JOE KOSLOWSKI Not an expert on greenhouse construction. I have the $600 harbor freight. But I plan to build a new glass house for probably $1000 or so.
I am SO in love with you! lol That aside...building a greenhouse is my dream and will happen in the very near future. I need to tear down an old shed before I start, though, which will take a lot of time ( it's big ). But yes, I agree on all 10 of your reasons to have one! Most definitely. Love from Israel!
I do love it... more correctly I should say I love owning a greenhouse. I couldn't live without one. However, the harbor freight model has just been too much work. But if you're willing to put the time in, it can be a good greenhouse for you. Just takes some extra TLC.
great video, I live in 8-9 zones here in Louisiana, so we can almost run year round with plants, I can see where your raised bed green house would be good for the short time we have winter, my issue is keeping plants cool enough due to the heat and humidity
Shovel County i over winter my gardenia trees in the basement because they get sunshine through basement window because sun is lower in the sky... also i just recently moved and a west facing siding glass doors enable me to over winter 2 more gardenia trees...they dint get direct sun because if Patio roof and they ate back from window a foot or two...BUT I JUST NOTICED THEY HAVE SET BLOOM! I HAVE BEEN KEEPING A COOL MIST HUMIDIFIER GOING...60% HUMIDITY IN OPEN KITCHEN DINING LIVING ROOM AREA...
+Catherine Bruce You can make a greenhouse from anything, Here's one made from old pallets and windows. s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/70/2d/f8/702df86c4b7133410a019a5dfe7d7a52.jpg

In the COVID19 is nice to have a green house. I am building my green house this year.
Me too. Was supposed to do it last summer, but put it off, finally doing it right now. 🤗
Me too! Hopefully in the next month. Nothing like a pandemic to motivate me to be more self sufficient!

Sorry to hear that. My greenhouse saves my sanity in winter
@@Growyourheirlooms true but I'm wanting to explore vertical aeroponics inside a climate controlled greenhouse.
I'm also in 7b...just finished my greenhouse..do you water your tropicals in the winter?
I do heat my greenhouse in the winter and they do dry out at times so yes, when they need it
I want one for the sun, for plants, for nature. Planning on a clear dome. Would love to hear what you think of that for growing
"Therapy" hahaha! Luv this guy!
I don't use the grenhouse in the summer. I pull all my plants out in spring and put them back in October
What part of 7b are you in I have a 8by 12 and loving it
Yes I love it, Saludos desde México
What kind of heater are you using in your greenhouse?
Ha ha ha I’m a therapist and I love planting!
So how is the glass greenhouse build coming along? My guess is you’ll be getting better temperature control. . .
I am loving every minute of it. Easier to keep regulated yes.
My mother and I have a screened pool enclosure. Since we got rid of the pool, I been trying to figure out how to convert the enclosure into a greenhouse so I can grow herbs and veggies all year. I want the acrylic paneling, but I'm clueless as to measuring and building it. Any recommendations will be very much appreciated.
get it free from me
Great video. I love my greenhouse too.
Harbor freight about $600
you started it, what type heater do you have in your greenhouse ?
I had one different item on my top ten list. Is the envy of your friends and neighbors. Tammy
HAHA, yeah, that works..
Lovely update thank you for sharing have a blessed day
Love it! I'm totally on board. Have a great day. :)
+Karen Berry Thanks, you as well
Yes to number 1 reason!
A place to activate primal instinct in those we will leave behind.
Can you have a green greenhouse? I just bought a small one to start, but now I want a huge one!
Do u have to move the plants outside for pollination or your vegetables will grow in the greenhouse without pollination ?
There's plenty going on for pollination inside the greenhouse
i want to buy a greenhouse for around $1200 what is the most reliable greenhouse i can buy and where??
+JOE KOSLOWSKI Not an expert on greenhouse construction. I have the $600 harbor freight. But I plan to build a new glass house for probably $1000 or so.
Everything is truth. Thank you.
JJB
Are you in a Harbor Freight greenhouse in this video?
Love your tips
Thanks
I am SO in love with you! lol That aside...building a greenhouse is my dream and will happen in the very near future. I need to tear down an old shed before I start, though, which will take a lot of time ( it's big ). But yes, I agree on all 10 of your reasons to have one! Most definitely. Love from Israel!
Love your video I did understand about the #1.
Thx
great video, does anyone else think he sounds like Louis CK? the voice, the mannerisms, maybe his bother?
I do it for my soul...
Life is good 👍
You forgot to mention that your own veggie's always taste better.
Thanks. That is true
What brand of greenhouses would you recommend?
Harbor Freight is the only brand I've bought. I don't recommend it. All my other greenhouses I built myself. So I can't give you an answer, sorry.
So basiclly green houses are for cold areas__?? ................. I live in southern California.... do i need one ??
Where did you get your green house?
Harbor freight. But the new one I built myself.

These past two winters, I had tomatoes in my sunroom. As long as the temp stayed above freezing, the plants survived.
Ok I’m convinced. But mostly i want it so i can smell soil in the winter
This aged well, am confident that he wasn't worried during the first month of the pandemic.
You got it! I like you man.
Thanks
What's the temperature variance from middle to the north side? Starting
Never measured it
How big is your greenhouse?
+Bigmada 10x12
