  • All I can say is WOAH!!! Sri Lankan food is so much more than I ever expected!
Sri Lankan food might take the cake for the most underrated and misunderstood cuisine. The food's incredible, and the vivid flavours you will taste are all a result of Sri Lanka's colourful history as a port for international trade in the olden-day Maritime Silk Route. Before ever trying Sri Lankan food, I had thought it would likely be much the same as Indian food. I'm sure I'm not the only one! Sure there are similarities, but there is so much more to unpack.
There are so many different spices, ingredients and cooking techniques used in Sri Lankan cuisine. You'll see influences from Indian, Chinese, Malaysian and Indonesian food, and even from the Persians, Dutch and Portuguese. Think stir-fries, curries, biryani, fried rice, and sambal.
In this video, we tried a Sri Lankan fried rice dish called 'thilak rice' with an incredible piece of devilled chicken, the national staple dish kothu roti, and string hoppers with lots of different curries (including chicken, mutton, fish and vegetarian curries).
    Location: Lankan Railway Cafe, Mortdale

Having travelled to Sri Lanka, I can also attest to the beauty of their food. Their curries are so beautiful, especially with the added coconut cream, their sambal is soooo fresh and vibrant, their roti I personally think is better than Indian roti, and the way they use seafood is chefs kiss.

With the texture of string hoppers, some curries work better than others. I usually love thibbatu mallum (wild eggplant sambol) with string hoppers, jackfruit curry and dhal.

If you do not mind, in your video you are consuming the Sri Lankan food somewhat wrong. The stringhoppers should be placed at the base of your eating plate and the curries from the small dishes in the serving plate should be placed on top of the stringhoppers using a table spoon. After this the curries should be mixed with the stringhoppers while eating. Preferably the food should be consumed with your fingers. In Sri Lanka this meal is consumed with the fingers but you can eat with a fork as well. If you ask the restaurant chef who prepared the food he will tell you how to consume this food. This way the food is much more delicious.

Good stuff! Looks pretty authentic compared to a lot of Sri Lankan food made abroad. However, butter chicken is not Sri Lankan at all. It is indian. The tiny bowls of curry need to be eaten with rice. Rice served in the middle of a plate with all these curries around which is mixed a little at a time (generally with your hands) with each other along with the rice.
String hoppers are supposed to be soaked in a liquidy curry like potato curry and chicken curry... with coconut sambol on the side. That too is generally mixed together and eaten with your hand.
One of the curries you mentioned is called snake gourd curry and not snake goat lol (the chef may have miss pronounced it). Do visit Sri Lanka someday, the food is out of this world.

Mutton is not lamb it’s sheep (so basically mature lamb 😂) that’s what mutton is in the uk etc but tbh In actual Sri Lanka there aren’t really sheep so it’s goat meat most likely
