As an artist, it is such a slap in the face to have your own work copied, I imagine same as a designer would feel too! Your work just fits your clients personally so well, and its custom fit, the love that goes into it. That is something that is worth every single change
It's so crazy to me how people would actually sh*t on you, for having ethics. You not ripping off others art, shows that you care about ethics with your business and that is something to be applauded. ❤
Having reference pictures for inspiration is good when going to a dressmaker. It helps when creating a look just for you. Asking for an identical dress is basically stealing from the orginal designer. If the designer wanted to share their design, they will release the pattern. Runway and red carpet couture fashion is often created for the person wearing it at the event. Stars will make personal contracts with designers to only were their fashion at such events.
Happy for you and with you! Tickles my soul when someone is living their true purpose in life to create money to survive. Truely it makes people shine to DO WHAT THEY LOVE AND LOVE WHAT THEY DO. That's kind of how custom garments are supposed to work, right? You see something, you like it but there's some tweaking you need done or some extra elements you WISH it had, so you find a seamstress.
You are such a creative and talented semtress. Your morales and value are to be respected. Your attention to detail is phenomenal. The finished products are beautiful. As a seasoned women, I find it disrespectful when your clients don't feel it is important to wear the correct foundation (undergarments) under the dress/gown. Seeing where your underwear starts and stopstakes away from your design. I am probably one if the few women that wears a slip and shapewear when necessary and I wear a size 4. Just saying.......
I’m so glad you’ve stayed true to yourself and your art. Anyone would be lucky to have a piece made by you. Having a piece of someone’s art is so special and intimate. You are dedicated to your craft and have so much passion. It definitely shows. Blessings to you!
If you really want the exact same thing, buy it from the designer (because you can't do a perfect replica only by looking at pictures or even the piece itself.) or if you don't want to spend the money, make it yourself.
I absolutely love the level of dedication and attention to detail that you have. It really shows that you have so much passion for your craft. How anyone could complain about how you create your art is mind boggling.
If people want copies they can go to salons who have no problem doing that. You explain to the clients what you offer and that's what matters. Good for you for standing up for your beliefs! 😊
Keep your integrity! And in that you’re developing your own skills and voice as an artist while honoring and respecting those around you! You deserve all the success coming to you!

This is a custom iteam, why would you want what was sold in store when you can pretty get the look you want! If you are paying 💵💵 then get what you want, get what noone sle cna have.
I had a custom dress designed for my wedding and the designer did a really amazing job! I had a pretty clear idea of what I wanted and a couple of reference photos and she was able to take that and make it into a real dress that was even better than I imagined
I totally agreed with this. I always encourage my clients to make the design there own. Why els would you go to a designer or dressmaker if not to have something original? It would be quicker to just get it from the shop if you want the same dress as someone els. My pet peve is when people say they want something plain and how much do i ask to make it... i can heer a 5 alarm going of in my head. Thouse are always the most difficult customers that want you to work 50hours on a dess but only pay you for 4.
I get it's frustrating to have your work copied and not getting credit nor compensated. However, that is just a struggle of your industry. Fashion is a common good and not eligible for copyright. This is why a lot of high-end fast fashion have their logo on everything. The logo is copyright protected.
To Dersim: my grandmother was a tailor (couture seamstress) with two very famous British couturiers. My mother used to like making sketches of clothes she’d like to wear and granny would make them. However, in order to design, it’s essential to know the properties of fabric in terms of how they drape, bulk, weight, etc. some of my mother’s designs couldn’t work due to the nature of fabrics. Don’t design and expect your exact design to materialise unless you have a thorough knowledge of fabric and cutting, or else you’ll end up with unwearable horrors!
Gurl I would love a dress from youuuuuu, they’re all so beautiful and made with such skill like why would I want someone elses design when I can get one from you!
Clients need to understand we can’t just copy a reference- and this goes for all types of design is well- graphic design, fashion, product design and every other type over the rainbow. There’s copyright and as a portfolio for us is well- it wouldn’t look good if all we did was copy a reference. This is why we sit down with the client and redirect and or tweak the brief if all they want is an exact copy of someone else’s work. If u want a copy of something- go to shien, I bet they have stolen the design u dream of by now. But if u want real craftsmen ship with proper care and individuality with the design, then let us sit down with you and help you ❤
Just curious. Can designers copy right their own creations/designs? Is it similar to the art world where you can but little things can be tweaked and it's not worth it overall.
Honestly as long as this is communicated up front (which in this case it is) what’s the problem. Also why would you not want your own original piece with all the aspects you liked, you’re already paying for a made from scratch outfit/dress
Oh boy do I have a story. My boutique has been open for 9 years and we were the only shop of our type in my state until last year. Last year a woman opened a store like ours 2 miles away, with almost our exact name, but theirs comes up first alphabetically. She also opened on our stores anniversary, stole several of my original designs, copies our social media posts, and just mean girls us constantly. So far we are taking the high road and not doing anything about it except being an all around better store and kinder people. We could sue, but I’m pretty sure she comes from money and we don’t. why is that shade if green so hard to find 😢 ive been looking for similar fabric in my area and the closest ive been is a thin suit lining, been eyeballing dye to just do it myself
“Just give me what I want” is so disrespectful towards both the person they’re asking this of and the original designer! If you want that specific dress, then go to the original designer and pay the original price! 🙄
I would also prefer an original over a replica. But if you want to make money off it, it can't be more expensive than the original since it's not your original design and ESPECIALLY if you do poor quality replicas. Or something inspired by different dresses. Like if you're gonna do them, at least make sure they are worth the customer's money. I recently saw someone do a corset "design" based off something from the Eras tour and for the price, the person who worked on it didn't even get the size of the customer. (Whether or not this actually happened, it's not something to proudly show & tell the internet 😅) I'm not skilled or passionate enough to actually know if the person was cutting corners but even I can see that knowing the measurements of your customer is the most basic requirements for anyone who wants to make an outfit for someone else. Edit: basically the person bought a corset, didn't bother to learn the size of the customer, added what looked like gems (I know that's not the right name for it but I can't remember what it's called) on it with some type of glue, and allowed a friend to help (which was considered as highly unprofessional and I agree since we don't know what the skill level is for that friend). Even if the entire scenario is fake, I don't understand why anyone would want to post a video like that since you're making yourself look bad
I invented the sun shade you now see lying down the beach in blue. I'm a hula hooper and used to take my hoop in a sheet to the beach when I saw the product come out I looked up their origin story no coincidence that they were going to the same exact beach it's only 11 mi long that I was going to
Yes I put a huge cross on the back of my jacket and painted dome on my leggings around 2008 someone shipped my jacket. Crosses Doon after on became a thing .
I can understand bot copying another person's pattern. My question is, do you make replicas of your own work, or do you make every piece unique to the customer?

Now what I want to know is.. is it unethical to copy a design I like, make the garment myself, for myself, just because the original was advertised with AI and the real product is nothing like the advertisement?
