One of the commenters noted that "double side tape has to come out and it always takes the padding along with it." I want to take this opportunity to remind folks that you should NOT be peeling the protective paper off the underside of the tape that will be touching the padding. In this video, I peeled off the protective paper from the top side of the tape ONLY but NOT the underside. I trim off the sides of the protective paper that is stuck on the underside of the tape, but I never take it off. You can't have the underside sticky because then it will be very difficult to slide in the carpet tape under the existing carpet.
Been a construction worker my whole life and I've never seen any video as a short, direct, or more simple way to do this repair. Thanks so much for the upload!
Wow, thank you so much for this. My cats have destroyed a chunk of carpet in my bedroom doorway and I’m desperate to fix it to save my deposit and avoid any other charges from my apartment. Everyone has told me that it couldn’t be fixed unless I hired a professional, but this is proof it can be done! Your video was so straightforward and it’s great to see a woman doing home repairs 🥰
My dog with separation anxiety has created the exact type of damage you are fixing in this video. This is perfect - totally what I needed. What a great DIY solution! Thank you for posting.
I am so glad I ran across this video. I am a woman also who is tired of hassling my boyfriend to fix the carpet spots our dogs have messed up but I wasn't sure how to do it properly. Now I know and I'll just do it myself. Thank you again. I'm your new subscriber. 😊
Perfect timing ! I have to do the same job in a hallway and since I am not a carpet installer , this lesson is what I needed .Thank you , the construction of the video was excellent .
We just bought our forever home and it needs a lot of little repairs and fix it type things. Carpet is on the list and I'm so excited I found your video. I feel like I can comfortably do this now, so thank you so much!
Now that’s what I call a real DIY vid. Thanks for making this Video!! Have to fix mine due to cats tore it up. Also thanks for showing what products you’ve used. Loved it.
*Great, straight forward video,, it was exactly what I needed too. It was so helpful! I was looking for a way to repair some cat damage to carpet. The damage was also in the same location. *The only other thing I separately learned elsewhere {Floors by Southern boys, How to Repair a Carpet Seam: 4:40-6:09} for a better seam (seamless) was to offset the "bubbles" or dots on each side of the carpet backing from each other. Be sure to cut in between the grid lines containing the bubbles/dots or you will fray/split the carpet fibers. Also, be sure that that carpet runs the same way (the ssme direction it lays down).
Wow, that vid has saved me! We have a bedroom threshold that was ruined by a kitten so this is a great repait that we can do relatively easily with the spare carpeting that we have. Thank you so much.
Awesome video. I do this professionally, but this is simple and very DIY friendly. The carpet trade in general is not very homeowner friendly, and if I have to make the trip to make a patch this size for a client, I won't do it for less than $100. Yeah, I do it the right way every time, but I myself would love to save $100+ by doing a small job myself rather than hired out.
This video is great! I've done this 4 times in less than a year in the exact same spot. Gave up fixing it. Brand new house with a hole in the carpet. Can't get cat to stop.
Excellent, great job!!!!. Tip.. all carpet has a knap like corduroy. Figure out direction by swiping the knap back and forth on the existing and future patch then cut it so it lays the same direction. It won't show on some but some will be night and day difference.
Thank you only video on here that’s not trying to make me spend a billion dollar on trying to be a carpenter, just trying to fix damage carpet with out spending money on unneeded carpet tools. So thank you for not making me go to school an just teaching the basic to me thank you
What an excellent idea taking carpet from a closet. Thank you so much. But I remembered after watching your video that we have a small piece of same carpet in our garage.
This is an awesome video. I came here today looking for a solution to a hole my cat made today in the same place as this video!!! I'm amazed that it could be fixed and that this video showed every step. It's a lazy Sunday afternoon for me today, so I'll spend the rest of the week looking around my condo and determining which closet I'll pull the replacement piece from and then next weekend I'll have it all fixed! I have everything I need, including the tacks and the carpet tape (that used I for a different DIY). THANK YOU!
Nice this happens and sometimes we get carried away, you were smart to call it quits and not force while seeing the buy side. I sometimes force and get humbled lol
Great video, I appreciate it. I've watched a few videos on carpet repairs and no other video mentioned the tip about cutting the paper on the side of the seam tape.
Very informative video. If i may, id like to add a couple of things to this. First is, when using carpet from a closet to patch carpet from traffic areas its usually difficult to get a close match. So it is very important to make sure the carpet knap is going in the same direction. Wear pattern or no wear at all if the patch is not running the same direction as the existing carpet its gonna look pretty bad. Second, when using the adhesive tape. Start out by matching up the edges rather than tucking under the door facing first. Thirdly, try to buy or borrow an actual carpet knife with several extra blades. Begin with a brand new blade and change blades often. And lastly, be super extra careful with said blades as they are much sharper than utility blades!
Would love to see another video like this talking about the tack strips or how to add one if needed on the area of carpet removed from the closet section. Thanks!
@@KYKCreations thank you! I haven’t been able to find a video about just doing small parts like that without all the fancy tools, or how to tuck/finish the edge for the stolen closet piece so that would be great!
Thank you so much for this clear video detailing how to do a repair. We had to cut a section out of our back stair carpet after our dog had an explosive accident, and I'm just looking to cover the bare spot. We'll probably redo the whole carpet when we go to sell the house in a few years, but this will hold just fine until then. I think I will cut the patch into two pieces to make sure it fits more precisely..
Thank you! This hole is almost identical to my carpet hole that a rat caused (trying to get out of a room with a shut door that had a small wall hole coming from the garage)
It is called a tie plate and you can find it near lumber or construction section in home improvement stores because it is used to nail together pieces of lumber. They come in all sizes.
Thanks! Your success will greatly depend on how well your replacement carpet piece matches the existing carpet. I had to repair the carpet less than a year after it was installed so it had little wear, and I was able to use the same carpet that had been installed in the linen closet.
So this morning I've learned how to repair damaged carpet, thread a needle easily and how to repair a damaged zipper with a pair of pliers. What did we do before RUclips? :)
I put an link to the carpet tape from Amazon in the description box, but if you have a Home Depot near you, I would recommend that you pick one up from Home Depot because it's cheaper there.
Thank you! Just have a question for the tape. Do you only take the protective paper off the tape that is touching the new carpet being put down ? So the protective paper stays on the side touching the flooring ?
Thank you. Just messed up a small patch of carpet with a spill, have a roll of excess in the closet and was wondering how to do this and make it look good. Video was very clear and concise. Off to Home Depot to get some carpet tape.
I didn't need to. I just used identical carpet that was installed in a small linen closet and replaced the carpet in the linen closet with a totally different piece of scrap carpet that I happen to have on hand that didn't match anything else.

So does the carpet tape just sit on top of the padding?
@@ericskates91 yes, just like way the rest of the carpet just sits on top of the padding.
Lowes carries the same tape.
Awesome! Just what I need.
Just curious, then what's the point of the tape if it's not attached to anything but the carpet...?
