Hello my friend. This is a good idea. You created the hummingbird nesting platform beautifully. congratulations. nowadays I am making a feeding unit for birds. Thank you for sharing. See you. stay healthy and safe. Big greetings. Yours truly.
Looking forward to seeing a follow up video to see if they used it,thinking of making one myself,I have a hummingbird that's been nesting in one of my wind chimes for a couple of years now.
Clever build. I have never seen such a nesting platform. Very natural looking. Although I liked the nesting platform, I have to admit I like the quality of the filming your daughter did and the wonderful story you provided. Awesome.
I had to build something and liked your creation, but here is no tiny branch for them to land on. I don't know if they can walk on a flat surface, so I added a small branch around the depression. I read that they prefer to have their home higher than 10 feet above ground. Looking forward to spring to try it out and most likely will have a variety of models to see if I can get one nest.
What a lovely video. Your project turned out beautifully and the filming was fantastic! I love that you and your family care enough about the birds to care for them. We are bird loving people here as well. I've "liked" and "subscribed" to your channel. Thanks again!
That's cool, birdhouses are great. I'm thinking about making one of those too. My understanding is that certain species don't like houses, but will nest on platforms. I'm hoping we get one to nest here.
Thank you...I think you could probably build one of these...jump right in and give it a try! I don't think it's possible to build a nest that hummingbirds would use...I believe they always make their own. Not positive about that...maybe someone with more knowledge will jump in here. Thanks again for watching and commenting.
I will definitely do an update video if we are lucky enough to have a hummingbird build a nest on the platform. I think we just missed nest building season this year.
I don't know much about them either...but I do like watching them and thought it'd be nice for my wife and daughters if we could get one to nest in a spot we could keep an eye on them. They are coming to the feeder regularly, but I think they might already have a nest. Oh well, maybe next year!
The idea is that they can use some of the cotton to of the nest. I haven’t had a hummingbird build a nest on this platform yet...so I don’t know if they’ll use it
Hey Stan that's pretty neat. I am going to build one for my daughter, but I have one question to ask, that I don't think you explained in your video, or maybe I just didn't hear it. What are the two little twigs that you cut off and put next to the recess for the nest to be built. I can't think of a reason for them, but I'm sure is one or you would't have put them in there. Thanks Stan, and will look forward to hearing about thos twigs. Thanks very much. Jim
Hi Jim...those little twigs are just there for the birds to have something to attach the nest to. All of the hummingbird nest...or any small bird nest for that matter...that I've seen birds make in trees has been placed in the crook of a V branch. This just gives the birds a chance to anchor their nest to something. Thanks
@@StanCrafted Oh, OK Stan that makes sense now. Great idea and thanks for letting me know about that. I'd bet it was never used by hummingbirds. Hummers won't nest in boxes, and while this is not a traditional bird-box, it is enclosed enough that a hummer wouldn't use it. Hummingbirds typically build their nests where branches diverge, creating a Y shape. And they build their nests where they can see 360 degrees around them, and fly away in any direction. I'd also like to point out that the cotton balls we buy are not good nesting material for birds. It has been processed using chemicals. Same goes for yarn and string. It's best to just let the birds find their building materials in the wild. I'm also going to say that if you have hummingbird feeders, you should throw them away, and get plants that attract hummers. Hummingbird feeders kill countless hummers every year. They are petri dishes for mold. Hummers that drink from a feeder with mold in it die a slow, painful death. And most people just don't clean their feeders and sanitize them properly, to ensure the feeder is safe. The mold is present long before you can see it with the naked eye. So a visual inspection isn't enough to ensure no mold is present. So planting hummer faves is a much better option. And, you can grew them in pots if you don't have anywhere grow them in your yard.
