PTSD, or shellshock as it was still being called, can do some weird shit to a psyche. Lot of people smile when we're truly afraid, or laugh. It's a self soothing gesture. I think it looked more haunting with that smile

I don't see why they did this. There's that picture of the "shell-shocked" (PTSD as it later came to be known) soldier in a trench smiling like he's at a party. A lot of soldiers 'cracked' under the pressure and acted strangely, even in the hours leading up to contact. The human mind doesn't cope well with sustained fear and stress, and can come up with extremely unusual reactions in order to try to cope. It adds to the Uncanny Valley of them being crammed in a boat to go to their very literal deaths.

NatedaNinja The practical effects made the movie look like shit. There wasn’t 300 troops on the beach there was hundreds of thousands of troops. A Romance movie called Atonement had a better representation of the beach than Dunkirk did.

I think it’d still be realistic if he was smiling. When I’m incredibly stressed or disturbed by something, I always tend to grin uncontrollably and giggle. When I was in 7th grade we watched a WWII documentary in my school’s auditorium, and it showed D-Day footage. When I saw it, I burst into such a fit of laughter that a teacher came over to scold me, and when I tried apologizing and saying I didn’t mean to, I was laughing too hard to get a comprehensive thought out. I had a lot of classmates shame me afterwards, but I really wasn’t trying to mock what happened, I think that laughter is just a natural reaction to shock. “Laugh lest we cry” I suppose

Do not forget that despite the fact that they surrendered, the French inflicted great damage on the Germans, which delayed the invasion of England and which allowed the invasion of England not to be invaded. not succeed. Ironically the German soldiers will say after Dunkirk: the English soldiers will fight to the last French

People don't understand how a man's brain works under stress because they've never been/ never seen a man under extreme stress
People react differently. When I was in the Navy I was onboard USS Enterprise and worked on the flight deck. One day, two F14s collided in the air and one of the pilot died. As I was explain why the ship was sailing so fast when unsuspecting shipmate asked, me and my budy were taking a smoking break and had smiles on our faces but we weren't smiling inside. We were just trying to down play the seriousness of the matter at the time because the death of the pilot wasn't official yet but only the collision was. But we knew the pilot was dead because the pilot fell from 10000ft without parachute open.
It's because photography wasn't much of a big thing (atleast in World War 1) I know this is a WW2 movie, but most soldiers in WW1 smiled at cameras because they knew they were in the pictures, either that or just curios at a contraption that takes an image of you.

I scrolled to this video and let it play while I stood up to wash my dish. By the time I realised it was looping every 2.5 seconds my hands were wet and I just had to accept it. Now I will never forget the fact that the infamous smiling extra was CGI'd in the final cut to look more serious and scared.
