    Fun fact: the +40k French encircled at 0:24 were trapped in the city of Lille. They held for 3 days against 160 000 men and 800 tanks until they were out of ammo and had to surrender.
    They were given the Honours of War by the Germans, one of the weirdest pictures of World War II being French troops parading, wearing arms, while German troops and officers salute in the background. This was when they were granted the Honours of War.
    Other fun fact: the last time Germany granted the Honours of War was... also to the French, at Fort de Vaux, in World War 1.

    I'm not sure if this is mythologized somewhat but I've read that german soldiers were issued a huge amount of a new pharmaceutical drug (today we call it meth), to help them stay awake and alert for the insane Ardene Blitz which is how all these allied forces got cut off in the first place. Part of the reason the Dunkirk evacuation worked was because the germans were coming down from about a week of meth and not sleeping. When people think of the german blitz they think of Panzers and the Luftwaffe but pharmaceuticals were part of it too.

      He was mostly scared of an hypothetical counter offensive somewhere in the west (though France at this specific moment barely had anything to throw at the Germans offensively speaking). Henceforth the German high command rapidly transfered most of divisions to the west. Several generals were also worried of their troops' tiredness(the panzer crew barely had any since early May, running on their drug "panzer chokolade", while the Landseehr had been walking continuously for roughly the same amount of time). Just look at the amount of german divisions allocated to the cleansing of the pocket early June: barely a tenth of what was engaged in late May. Most of the units were immediately relocated to the west to prevent any kind of counter offensive to succeed.

      @Stokie_Lad22 he didn’t really let them leave. His army charged in trying to annihilate the entire allied presence. When the army couldn’t reach the shores in time, Germany ordered bombing over the evacuation sites to kill or destroy any allied soldiers and the boats

    A lot of this could have been avoided had Gamelin not sent his operational reserves to the Netherlands, those forces were desperately needed to cut off the German spear head through the Ardennes. Nevertheless the French army did a great job in holding off the Germans and covering the British withdrawal from France.

    • @penguin3540
      @penguin3540 Год назад +7

      The French army thought the Ardennes was impossible to break through, and for the most part it was. That area was heavily wooded forest with massive hills. It’s still an insane endeavor for 50 divisions mainly comprised of tanks to cross that. You can’t really blame the Allies for not fortifying that. They also didn’t have many tank divisions. The French had opted for tanks spread out between their infantry divisions and only had 3 concentrated tank divisions and 1 motorized division. The Germans had more than 10 tank and motorized divisions as they didn’t spread out the tanks as much.

    How do you explain French HQ ordered the best units run through in Belgium fastly and there was not any French units between Sedan and Abbeville cities ? And also, French HQ asked an armistice fastly too. ''They are too strong we can't fight against them." The biggest lie in military history. The truth, the French HQ didn't wish to struggle against the German army. It was Petain's politics during these 4 years, after june 16th 1940. He said this unthruth in his radio speeches to put the spirits to sleep deeply. Fortunately Churchil was there in 10th Downing Street and De Gaulle for French people didn't accept the defeat. During this period, France was torn in two parts like a civil war. It was difficult to understand these Frenchies as seen from abroad. I can see it easily cause French people don't understand anything what happened exactly, and others carry on to lie nowadays.
