Fun fact: the +40k French encircled at 0:24 were trapped in the city of Lille. They held for 3 days against 160 000 men and 800 tanks until they were out of ammo and had to surrender.
They were given the Honours of War by the Germans, one of the weirdest pictures of World War II being French troops parading, wearing arms, while German troops and officers salute in the background. This was when they were granted the Honours of War.
Other fun fact: the last time Germany granted the Honours of War was... also to the French, at Fort de Vaux, in World War 1.
Germans did a lot of terrible things during the war but they at least had honor unlike the soviets and Japanese

The Belgians surrendered en mass after their king surrendered the country which left british and French troops scrambling to plug the gaps, you can see it when the Belgians units start surrendering on the map.
We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God’s good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.
The first speach was so inspiring
The Belgians going agianst the enemy like there is no surrender and they never went with the other division planning to escape they were giving their lives
4 years later, back with a vengeance
With a dead man leading the way.
And now... France and England will be destroyed, their culture will be destroyed. They get what they deserve. Now they will pay for betraying Europe lol
this is why you dont rely on some natural defenses
well a very well known british royalty member was also a traitor and gave some good advice to the German after visiting France . It is funny how no one talk about it.

They give up to come back stronger
@@Speed249 They never became stronger. The US kept them on life support, that's all. Even the UK itself was bankrupt by 1941 and they never really recovered from it since.
@@PeterT-i1w Well, without the help of the USA they would not have been able to invade Normandy alone.
I'm not sure if this is mythologized somewhat but I've read that german soldiers were issued a huge amount of a new pharmaceutical drug (today we call it meth), to help them stay awake and alert for the insane Ardene Blitz which is how all these allied forces got cut off in the first place. Part of the reason the Dunkirk evacuation worked was because the germans were coming down from about a week of meth and not sleeping. When people think of the german blitz they think of Panzers and the Luftwaffe but pharmaceuticals were part of it too.
Yeah they were high on meth that’s true
Damn high on meth is pretty powerful
That wasn't something unique to the Axis. The Allies had their own, notably for bomber pilots.

why did hitler let the dunkirk army leave?
He didn’t, the French just held on long enough for the British to evacuate
He was mostly scared of an hypothetical counter offensive somewhere in the west (though France at this specific moment barely had anything to throw at the Germans offensively speaking). Henceforth the German high command rapidly transfered most of divisions to the west. Several generals were also worried of their troops' tiredness(the panzer crew barely had any since early May, running on their drug "panzer chokolade", while the Landseehr had been walking continuously for roughly the same amount of time). Just look at the amount of german divisions allocated to the cleansing of the pocket early June: barely a tenth of what was engaged in late May. Most of the units were immediately relocated to the west to prevent any kind of counter offensive to succeed.
@Stokie_Lad22 he didn’t really let them leave. His army charged in trying to annihilate the entire allied presence. His hope that that Britain would see Germany offering peace as a way to pay back for the 400k soldiers captured or killed. The Germans still charged in full speed. When the army couldn’t reach the shores in time, Germany ordered bombing over the evacuation sites to kill or destroy any allied soldiers and the boats
@@penguin3540The British also evacuated 30,000 French and Belgian soldiers.
@@penguin3540 This is wrong. He did. He wanted peace with Britain despite his army protesting. He did allow a lot to leave. It could've been far more devastating. Stop making things up.
He should have ended them right there but he let them escape. Big mistake.

Were the french really at Dunkirk ?
Yes? What kind of question is that?
Well where else would they be? You think they deployed everything solely on Maginot and left the most direct and easiest road into France also called Belgium only to a British expeditionary force?
That was only a payback for Napoleon destroying the Holy Roman Empire.
Imagine all of this would never happened only if French had the balls to attack Germany in september 1939 when most of the German troops were in Poland.
They did with the Saar offensive, but the Anglo-French supreme war council decided to stop the offensive
Its not have the balls dude, it was have the capacity..with Italia in the south with 300 000mens ready to attack and France had 40 M citizens, Anshluss, Germany had more than 80M citizens, France had no the reserve, the capacity to attack

@@Sceptonic The halt order ended before the battle of Dunkirk. 10,000 French soldiers died by magic surely.
It was a massive strategical failure to let 338,000 Allied troops escape the Dunkirk, later on all of these soldiers fought against Germany in Western Europe and Italy.
Many of these soldiers didn’t see battle until early 1945, meaning the only battle they saw was the collapse of an already fractured Italian state and the final offensive into Germany
The British didn’t have the undertaking to equip 400k soldiers with new equipment and train them all(most of them weren’t fully trained as the British had no mobilized much prior to the war). The American lendlease could not handle it all either. At least 100k fought in the early battles for France in 1944 and the last of them entered in January 1945
Fun Fact...Hitler did not want war with the British. Ribbentropp and Hitler did everything to avoid war with the British. Hitler only started bombing London after Churchill bombed German cities and targeted German civilians indiscriminately. The reason for the entire war and the destruction of Europe is because Chamberlain handed out defense guarantees to a list of European nations after he heard Germany was going to invade Romania...a nation it didn't even border!
Indeed it was a massive failure.
It was probably the only thing that forced the British to not agree to a ceasefire with Germany.
Albeit the Battle of Britain was probably the thing that definitely shot Hitler in the foot more.

People be like: the germans didn't gave them a chance
Also the german high command giving orders to halt the panzerdivisions:
and used the air force like geniuses
it wasn't by choice lol. Because of the blitzkrieg and time of year the armored divisions and logistics where stretched thin and out of fuel.
Wehraboos only have 1 perspective. And they never understand the fact that Britain only had the BEF deployed. Much like August, 1914, battle of Mons, it was only BEF. Imagine if the full body of Britain was sent 1940. The allied numbers would prevent defeat.
@@R3UKO no. The Germans had an abundance of oil up until 1943. The very reason the British SAS was founded was to target German oil fields transporting cargo to the wehrmacht
Guderian: "nuh uh" *keeps rolling and ignores orders*
A lot of this could have been avoided had Gamelin not sent his operational reserves to the Netherlands, those forces were desperately needed to cut off the German spear head through the Ardennes. Nevertheless the French army did a great job in holding off the Germans and covering the British withdrawal from France.
The French army thought the Ardennes was impossible to break through, and for the most part it was. That area was heavily wooded forest with massive hills. It’s still an insane endeavor for 50 divisions mainly comprised of tanks to cross that. You can’t really blame the Allies for not fortifying that. They also didn’t have many tank divisions. The French had opted for tanks spread out between their infantry divisions and only had 3 concentrated tank divisions and 1 motorized division. The Germans had more than 10 tank and motorized divisions as they didn’t spread out the tanks as much.
They thought that they would had time to save the Netherlands, if Netherlands hold, it was game over for Germany, as they would had outnumbered and flanked the Germans.
But they greatly underestimated the German speed and absolute brute force they unleashed.
@@penguin3540well yesnt, the French High Command actually expected an attack through the Ardennes because French Intel on German mouvements and forces were quite good for the time.
What they didnt expect was that the Germans would move so soon and so quickly while remaining unnoticed

How do you explain French HQ ordered the best units run through in Belgium fastly and there was not any French units between Sedan and Abbeville cities ? And also, French HQ asked an armistice fastly too. ''They are too strong we can't fight against them." The biggest lie in military history. The truth, the French HQ didn't wish to struggle against the German army. It was Petain's politics during these 4 years, after june 16th 1940. He said this unthruth in his radio speeches to put the spirits to sleep deeply. Fortunately Churchil was there in 10th Downing Street and De Gaulle for French people didn't accept the defeat. During this period, France was torn in two parts like a civil war. It was difficult to understand these Frenchies as seen from abroad.
