    Really liking this series! I've always felt like the lack of real guides for shmups was a huge barrier to accessibility. Sure, you can watch replays, but unless you're already great at the game it's really hard to analyze what's going on and synthesize it into anything useful. Especially since I'm not a visual thinker. I like strategies explained in words and heuristics. Which is all to say, I really hope you'll keep doing these, and that guides in general become a bigger thing in the community!

      Hey Blander! Long time no see, I've been out of certain spheres lately but it's great to see your name showing up again! Yeah, I 100% agree with you. Watching a 1cc without commentary when you're either inexperienced or don't even understand what mechanics are involved and how they work is not such a great way to make sense of anything, let alone build an awareness of how you might do it differently. I definitely aim to bang out more of these soon since they don't demand as much time or energy compared to some of my other videos and right now my schedule is extremely limited so guides are what I'll be focusing on. Thanks so much for being here!

    Great video! While watching super plays is always nice, we really need more of these type of videos, to draw more people into the genre. I started playing shumps about a year ago, and this game a few weeks ago. It is really a wonderful game. I’ve 1cc novice original and boost mode with all 4 ships now, but that that first clear felt so good. Though ship wise I really struggle with Type I, as it’s so slow and weak. I’m taking a break from this game for a bit, but will come back to try and clear arcade mode. Good luck with Unlimited mode, as the replays I’ve seen of that mode are just insane.

      Hey there Elmar! Thanks for commenting. I really enjoy doing this type of video because it gives new players or those less experienced a tangible breakdown of how to approach the game. I think it's great to figure things out on your own but sometimes we won't know where to start when first jumping into something. Congrats on all of your clears!

    Thanks for the video. I just beat this. Feels good. Took me 5 hours over like 3 days. On previous run I reached the TLB for the first time, but then died 5 times to it. Couple hours later I started another run and finished the game with 3 lives left, which was just super unexpected. I'm just getting started with the genre at 34 years old. Next up is Mushihimesama novice 1cc.
    Love the channel ❤, gotta listen to all the coffee talks

    Hey Dace, finally got round to watching this properly. I just want to thank you again for taking the time to make this and for getting me on the CCWE wagon after a 6 month break.
    Tbh, picking it up again makes me remember why I dropped it: unlike other shooters I've played, deaths in novice mode feel quite cheap. I lost so many lives I really shouldn't have because I couldn't see stray bullets amongst the visual clutter. It's frustrating. I've goofed around in arcade and it seemed better in this regard.
    That said, I am proud to say that today I got the 1CC with the Type-Z ship and reached the TLB with Type-1! As you said in the video, it pays to familiarize yourself with the levels, whether that's the gun turret placement in stage 5 or that sneaky red laser from the boss later in the level.
    What I took from your video is that us players can succeed by using the resources the game gives to us (you said something like that towards the end). It's very true. Like a lot of new players, I first played CCWE like some wannabe rain dodger that never bombed when I was in a jam. Consequently I died a lot. This time round (and with more experience in the genre) I used my bombs when things got dicey. Bombs help a lot and using them doesn't mean you suck. It's a learning experience that's meant to be fun.
    One last thing I want to add is that the final bullet pattern from the TLB was the most fun to dodge. It felt very Cave-like. Thanks again!

      Oh yeah, one more thing :D What's the secret to surviving 16:33-16:48? I lost TWO extends there with the Type-1 ship. Can you believe that. I found it's easier to manage that section with the wider spread of the Type-Z ship. For the other ships with smaller spreads is there any trick to it? I shudder to think how vicious it must be in arcade mode.

    • @Shmuptopia
      @Shmuptopia  2 года назад

      Hey Ash! Glad to hear you could get back into this after half a year off. Yeah, some shmups are like that with sneaky bullets blending in with either the background or animations (explosions, enemy movements, projectiles, etc). Thankfully you can always stay on top of that once you know it's about to happen.
      Congrats on the 1cc today, that's stellar to hear! Will you be tackling a variety of the other modes or perhaps zero in on something specific outside of CCWE? I know when my Monster Hunter phase cools down, I want to get at Omega Fighter sooner rather than later.
      As for using resources, you're absolutely correct - they are tools to be used and holding onto them serves literally no purpose unless you're going for a run where you intentionally never use a bomb or trigger a hyper mode of sorts. I touch on this in my "Shmup Survival Guide 101 - Planned Bombing" episode a little bit. At one point or another, many players struggle with the notion that bombing is cheating and if I'm being completely honest, I have no idea where that comes from but it's a thought that doesn't do anyone any good. I'm almost thinking I need to do a short episode addressing this misconception! But yeah, if you think about a military mission where a living breathing pilot is flying a jet into enemy territory (or whatever other scenario), there's no way they won't use what they need to depending on the situation and so shmups might as well be viewed the same way. If the situation calls for a bomb-drop, that's what you do - and cheating never enters the picture.
      I'll address your second comment individually once I've jumped in and taken a closer look! Thanks for this epic response though, that's such a treat!

      @@ashcliffeable Great question and in Arcade mode, this part tripped me up before I knew how to approach it (with Type-Z anyway). As for tackling this section in Novice with Type-I, I think what I'll do is record a short video of that part specifically and share it. I want to test a few things in that area but I'll aim to get this to you early afternoon - I'll leave a link to an unlisted YT vid in this conversation.

      @@Shmuptopia Speaking from experience, new players seem to believe that the only way to be "good" at shmups is to dodge everything. Bombs are not dodging. With more experience, you shake off those beliefs and learn to utilize bombs.
      Something that helped me was a great quote I read from THE Yotsubane/CLOVER-TAC (which I cannot find now) where he said good playing isn't dodging bullets but avoiding them completely. Took me a while to understand that. A good example is at 7:56. You wisely went around the two blue streams, whereas before I would attempt to go between them. Basically play it safe.
      I'll admit I learned not to bomb thanks to ESP Ra.De. You cannot get "gold" in the training mode if you use bombs (barrier). Since that was my first shmup, I built the bad habit of not bombing which carried over into other games.
      I'll get the 1CC with the Type-1 ship and play with Boost Mode. My main STG focus is getting the 1CC Normal Clear in Mushihimesama. Wish me luck.

      @@persona83 ha, if there are any chosen ones, I'm not in that group. While shmups can still be approached casually, they certainly are demanding but it's like anything else requiring courage to face. We aren't born knowing how to play guitar, or speak a second language and it's the same for shmups. All it takes is the desire to start learning more and see how we fit with it all. Either way, I definitely appreciate your comments and it's great having you here!

      @@Shmuptopia Hey man, thanks for your kind words. Here's a little story: as said, I always thought these amazing YT gameplays were done by people with superhuman reflexes, then I found you and SJ and your lessons about pattern memorizing, screen control, etc. gave me an entire new approach for these games. Also, using modern emulator resources like replays and savestates I was able to identify my mistakes and dead ends so I could avoid them.
      Your lessons, tips and encouragement brought me a new vision about shmups. When I try a new shmup, instead of just avoiding the bullets (something I definitely suck), I try to identify patterns and safe spots. Not bad for a fighting game guy since childhood, I think. :)
      Thanks to you and SJ I could 1cc the 1st loop of my beloved Sonic Wings 2. Right now trying my way in the 2nd loop. Salamander arcade comes next.

It's been a long while since I originally unlocked Type-Z but from what I recall, you just need to 1cc Novice mode (possibly once with each available ship) and if that doesn't work, then you need to also 1cc Novice Boost mode in the same way (with all three ships). Do you think starting with this mode gives bad habits when transitioning to arcade ?

    • @Shmuptopia
      @Shmuptopia  2 месяца назад

      Great question! Some people will feel that you don't learn as much if you jump into a mode that is too easy. That said, "too easy" is subjective. Arcade Original, for many people, will be an extremely difficult clear to go after depending on what you've experienced in the genre so far. It's still doable with a correct approach and understanding. However, the benefit of doing a Novice mode first is that you establish a familiarity with the game that can, to some extent, be applied to more difficult modes afterward.
