Shmuptopia
Канада
Добавлен 2 сен 2019
Hello and welcome!
For those just swinging by for the first time, I started Shmuptopia to give games in the STG genre their own spotlight. I have an immense passion for STGs that started in 2018 and really wanted to begin spreading shmupwareness to the darkened corners of the planet and far beyond.
I am pretty much exclusively on Switch these days and have been for a while but aim to branch out more and more over time.
I offer First Looks, 1cc runs, reviews, guides, and more. I always respond to the stellar comments left by the incredible community we have growing here so never hesitate to drop something but please keep it appropriate. I love pouring my time and energy into all things SHMUPS so let's have an epic time together!
All my 1cc runs are real. No edits, save states, etc.
If you like my videos, free free to like and consider subscribing to keep up to speed with all future projects.
With all of that out of the way, strap yourself in and enjoy the ride through the cosmos!

Thank's for the chat Dace! It was strange to be interviewed like this and definitely outside my comfort zone, but you made it a fun experience. I've enjoyed listening to the other players in this series like Letsblocking, Chinopolis and Vinu etc., so I hope people also get something out of this episode as well. Cheers.
A game named after Aleister Crowley and Celtic Frost can't be bad
THIS GAME can be cleared with 1cc? Wow! I need to watch but just got it & HATE spoilers. Lets see how long I can endure the punishment due👀🤣
Yeah, definitely push into the experience on your own as much as you can but feel free to use this if necessary.
@@Shmuptopia Oh yeah, im definitely gonna use what you are showing here. Thanks for doing this tutorial Sir.
@@ronniepatterson2827Always a pleasure! Let me know if you need any additional information.
@@Shmuptopia Will do👍
Whoa. I have no idea why this game seems so intimidating on my runs. 😆 It’s crazy how many enemies (and even bosses) have safe spots if you just stay slightly above them.
For the twist off I have to hold down on the top and then twist the flat head? I got a new bat top and wanna make sure I don’t break anything
I've always held the screwdriver+shaft stationary while spinning the balltop itself but I suppose you could spin the shaft too. It's incredibly rare for a shaft to not spin, so you should be good. Don't worry about breaking anything and let me know if you have any other questions!
@ not so much the shaft more of the screw itself like in the video I can just twist the screw them the top after?
@jaykazuma2452 Yeah, that's probably fine. You have this model or the PlayStation one? I doubt there's a difference where the interior is concerned, so you should be good either way.
@ it’s the PS version
It’s the same model just for PS, i just wanted to make sure
Nice run Dace and thanks for the tons of useful tips ! I used to play the bunny guy but maybe I will switch to this ship...
Thanks, man! Cobra is a super efficient character. By the way, I started your Streets of Rage video and am gradually chipping away at it. Life with the kids doesn't leave much room for watching these days ha!
@@Shmuptopia No worries Dace, the amount of things you do while taking care of 2 kids is amazing 👍
Congrats! Great guide. Is this steam or Switch ver?
Thanks! This is the Switch version.
Dace, thanks for the guide! I'm a sucker for the chopper in DDP, so I'm very happy you went Cobra. Thanks for the guide! Super thorough, and the game looks really fun =)
No worries, man! Cobra's a beast for sure. Everything drops insanely fast. I love Hell Tiger too though. Thanks for popping by!

Man Dace this game is so damn good!
It's truly wicked!
Great episode! “This thing’s here to steal my credits” 😂 12:35
Glad you enjoyed it, man! It was a fun session to bang out!
Bro, thank you. I'm learning tons from this. Sharing routing and strats like this is rare in the community, and it's an incredible thing for new scrubs like me!
Thanks for checking this out! Yeah, you are spot on. Lack of this sort of information on RUclips was one of the biggest glaring holes I noticed when I got into the genre in 2019 and that's why I started doing this sort of thing. I'm aiming to put together one for Super XYX shortly. Thanks again and I'm definitely checking out your Crimzon Clover Novice clear!
@ I’m getting that game soon! I look forward to watching more of your guides. It’s a sloppy survival run, but I was proud to get my first one! Thank you so much!
@@unhallowedosrsWhen you jump into Super XYX for the first time, it'll likely feel chaotic but there's a very simple approach you can use to gain huge consistency and streamline the entire run, so I'm eager to put this together.
@ I can’t wait! Stage 2 boss in batsugun absolutely bodied me until I saw how you bullet streamed it. You’re doing great work for the uninitiated!
I appreciate that. Every boss in Batsugun is pretty aggressive in its own way. The S3 boss is pretty straightforward once you know how to flow with its attacks. S4 boss is intense stuff when you first start chipping away at it! Eager to hear how things go for you and definitely let me know if you require any additional assistance.@@unhallowedosrs
Excellent video. Super chill! 😊
Thanks so much for checking this out! It's always great hearing people enjoy the lair back nature of these episodes. I have another one coming out in the next few days.
Thank you, the G16 is now my Button Box for my PC Racing Cockpit (WIP) in conjunction with a Shifter and a Logi flight quadrant controller. A 2nd G16 is connected to my Linux Retro Emulation PC or is used for couch-co-op with me Missus... cheers
Hey, thanks so much for sharing this! It's always super cool to hear what other people zero in on and for what purposes. While I haven't used the G16 in a while due to checking out numerous other controllers this year, it's still an all-time favorite!
Hesitated on getting this since i heard nothing but bad stuff about it i finally just brought it cause from what i seen it does look fun
Well done. Such a great feeling to 1CC. Mushi is my only cave arcade mode 1CC. How many hours did this take? I’m a little over 20 hours in and I’m inching close. Can make it to final boss but I can’t make it with enough resources.
Thanks for checking this out! Mushi is definitely a fun and comfortable one to enjoy. I don't recall how long this took. I also encourage players not to focus on/use hours invested as any sort of gauge. I actually have a video planned for discussing this. But for now, let me ask how far you think you've come in terms of learning the game to the degree you desire. What stage is giving you the most problems? How many resources will you need on average to push through? How much do you want to learn and is this a game you want to master or are you mainly after a single clear no matter how the performance goes? I'm just curious and if it helps, I can potentially jump in and record a private video lesson for you on whatever stage is tripping you up the most. Let me know as I'd be happy to help you learn more of this incredible game! Thanks again!
@ no problem! And that is good advice! I really should stop checking my hours played. It could get very discouraging if it takes me longer than expected to get the 1all. I have come pretty far… my first 5 hours I’d make it to stage 4 boss consistently. By 10 hours I was making it to stage 5. 10-15 I’d make it to laser wheels. Now I’m making it to the boss with maybe a couple bombs. As of right now, I lose SO many recourses around the laser wheels, so I’ve been practicing routing them. So tempting to just manual bomb the trickier laser wheel sections in an attempt to lose less auto bombs because so far that is the only way I can make it to the boss with a couple bombs. I’d say right now, the only way I’d be able to 1all is by making it to the boss with at least 5 bombs and a medium rank hyper in tow… and even then I doubt I’d be able to clear consistently. So right now the move is to practice from stage 5 1st mid boss onward over and over…. And over………….. and over. lol. I really wish there was a save state option on the switch port. It sucks haveing to go through the mid boss to practice the wheels. My goal is to 1all and then maybe switch up and focus on scoring more. You don’t need to personalize a vid for me man! All good! I really do appreciate it tho! All I know is this game is so much fun!
Also… your hyper while inside that laser wheel was CLUTCH. You used the invul frames to squeeze out. Super clever. Plus the hyper made the next part more manageable. I may implement a similar strat.
Please excuse the delayed response. The last few days have kept me rather swamped with family responsibilities. Yeah, the wheels end loads of runs for most people. There are ways to do it with either few or no resources used, though I don't recall if I knew that at the time of this recording since it's been ages since I played this particular run. Chances are I bombed through it, but with how I approach things now in shooters, I'd definitely put together a no-bomb method.@@golions13579
Ugh still haven't beaten this or Star Hunter DX i love the Mushihimesama vibes Mushihimesama 2.0 lol great run with enough practice ill eventually over it i did manage to get to hell level 28 in Void Gore with a 4,678,280 score man my best run yet
Great interview! Its interesting to hear how his story has some timeline paralells with my own. A lot of the 2020-2023 shmup youtubers (like yourself) played a big role in my obsession with the genre. Seems like a good number of them have kind of fallen off the map, though.
Glad you enjoyed it, Goji! This was a blast of a session to record.
Nice video and beautiful artwork. Also, for some reason, I'm still surprised by how small the Haute16 is.
Thanks, man! I'll think you'll be blown away by one of the vids I'll be sharing soon!
There is a free, very decent precursor called Nightmare Trip (download link in shmup wiki) and it‘s not much stripped down compared to Cosmo Dreamer. Downside is it‘s in strict Japanese and it seems to freeze on some machines like my main desktop. But maybe you can show off a maniac 1cc of this 5 stage game, so more people get to know it? I definitely find all your commented runs really helpful!
Great video, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I forgot you did a playthrough of this amazing game
Very fun and relaxing watch. Thank you!
Thanks so much! I'll have another one up soon. Glad you enjoyed this.
Do you have a download link for that artwork? It's awesome :)
Thanks so much. I actually don't. It's a screenshot from one of my earlier sessions in Rolling Gunner on Expert difficulty. I'll also have another Mayflash art video going up next week, if interested.
Are leverless sticks your go-to shmup input method now, Dace? They seem like the best in theory--more precise then a pad and faster than a lever. I just cannot get used to them personally. I always end up moving weird with "staircase"-like movement as I call it. Just can't get it fluid.
Just saw your comment now! To answer your question, no. They are not my go-to for Shmups. For me, it's a mix of being the automatic choice for fighting games while also gradually experimenting more and more with using them for certain shooters. I have a Novice mode clear in Mushihimesama on the DOIO Hitpad that I reviewed not too long ago and then I also did a Normal mode clear in Graze Counter GM a month or so ago. Stick or dpad is still the go-to for Shmups and it depends on the game and situation. For example, Rolling Gunner is always with the Hori Mini because I love that thing! Whereas retro shooters or things like Super XYX which I'm dabbling in a little bit are on dpad - partially because of convenience. I can understand the wonky-feeling nature of your experience so far. I think Shmups will demand the most adapting because it's not like a fighting game where you're essentially just concerned about forward and backward movement. In Shmups, movement in constantly changing directions is always happening. I think there's a fluidity that can be attained, though it will certainly require putting the time in. By the way, what controller do you have exactly? I'd love to hear what you've all got and what you prefer. Thanks so much for checking this out!
@@Shmuptopia Dang dude, this has to be the most comprehensive youtube reply I have ever had in my life lol. I love it, thank you. I absolutely agree with your point about fighting games. As interesting as keyboards seem to me as well as leverless pads, I just can't imagine them being as fluid for circular movement as sticks and pads. I tend to make weird "staircasey" movements with them when I experiment. Regarding my inputs, I love the M30. I did a deep dive into the reddit fight stick subreddit and found a simple mod where you put a tiny 5/32" ball bearing underneath plastic of the Dpad so that the whole pad can't be pushed inward--thus eliminating some of the "mushy" feeling and the risk of an unintentional diagonal input. Still, as much as I'm comfortable with Dpads having grown up with them, I go about 50/50 between them and my arcade sticks. I have one with an LS-56 and one with an LS-32. While the LS-56 feels nice and precise with its spring tension for macromovement, when I'm playing Touhou and need to make fast micro-twitch dodges, I find that because I have to push harder to make the lever engage due to the tension, I tend to push/pull too hard and bump into bullets. Meanwhile, my M30 feels FASTER for putting in inputs, yet also "slippery" at times. The SN30 pro certainly feels less slippery, but diagonals and circular movements on that cross pad just feel super awkward and uncomfortable. So for now I'm actually loving my LS-32. The looser spring is more comfy. However, it has a bit of a dead zone so the engage isn't as fast, and it has a longer throw which is not ideal for shmups. I still find it very comfy though, so a few hours ago I actually purchased an LS-40 which has a close amount of tension and may resolve some of the LS-32 shortcomings. It's quite the rabbit hole lol. Anyway, love your channel dude.

I had to click on your profile image, and then see the list of comments you've left on my channel just to track down the response. @@Shmuptopia Yeah I don't see it either. YT sucks sometimes.
@@blazinglazers69 Now the long response is no longer available to me, so I won't be able to respond to everything as specifically as I wanted to. To summarize though, it's great to hear you have some Seimitsu sticks. I've got four here myself and they are wild. I was intending to do a comparison video for all of them and had started recording for it, though my laptop at the time went haywire and I lost everything. Not sure when I'll get back to that project. If you ever want to put together some videos, I'm sure people would lap that up! I'm wondering if a fresh comment outside of this one would be a better option!
Great stuff. Thanks to both of you! I can relate to the Rayforce story. It's the same thing that happened to me with Mushihimesama. Finding solutions to problems and creating "my route" was a big part of the experience that I didn't see at first. It's almost like a fighting game "crossover" again. FG players like games where they can express themselves through the gameplay. I get that vibe with shmups, too. Sure, you can tap to dodge or move to a certain position, but maybe you feel more comfortable with a different solution. I think that's how players develop their style. As for "soft eyes" - that's also something that happens in fighting games. You want to look at your opponent's character to see how they move. I also think it happens in music. When you play guitar or bass and you zone out, the fretboard kind of becomes irrelevant because you know where your fingers need to go to hit the right note and you know how much force you need to bend the string to get the exact sound you want. Anyway. Great conversation!
Always great to have you here, Timo! I totally hear you on the creating your own route. I personally don't mind staying in a game for much longer if it means I get to figure things out myself in a way that is meaningful to me instead of relying on simply watching how someone else does it. Definitely 100% on the fretboard, too!
That looks fantastic! Did you make the design yourself?
Thanks! These are actually screenshots I took from a shooter called Devil Engine. The back is from the midboss of stage 4 and the front image is from shortly after that encounter.

You might stumble upon a player or two when you least expect it. Learning BareKnuckleRoo lived only 24mins was definitely a surprise. I don't often get out there due to how busy the kids keep me!
@@Shmuptopia Are you guys on a discord?
Fightcade actually works really well for coop. :) I've played Giga Wing and Blazing Star with some amazing Brazilian players there.
@@BareKnuckleRoo Blazing Star is awesome!
Where's your location? I'm sure there are tons around you!
Great job! Been playing this on Dreamcast and it's the only shmup in my library I haven't beaten. The last stages are super tough
Thanks for checking this out. I cleared this on my own with the weakest ship two years ago, so if my run from then will help at all, it might give you some pacing ideas! I just remembered I put together a tutorial video too!! ruclips.net/video/sVTQfo0MAak/видео.htmlsi=vfWbqKgit-6QZxnt GW is an all-time favorite!
Great strategy syncing your shield use
@@zajicappI meant to share this link instead! This is the how-to video for a full run: ruclips.net/video/sVTQfo0MAak/видео.htmlsi=vfWbqKgit-6QZxnt
And here's my actual solo run with commentary: ruclips.net/video/45dQwKJWebU/видео.htmlsi=8W2c_Gfy6-rMRwGJ
Try out the arcade version sometime. The last few stages are a bit easier in the arcade version because the Dreamcast is missing some slowdown during the last couple of bosses. It's not a huge difference in difficulty, but the extra slowdown does help.
don't know at point of the video, but just askin how did you get this template man? i have an f700, can't just find a template for it. plan to photoshop it and retain the botton sign on top of the art.
The templates for tons of different arcade sticks can be found on the Focus Attack website. They have a repository and you'll find one for the f700. I'll share the link: focusattack.com/artwork-print-and-cut-for-mayflash-f700/ Let me know if you have any other questions! Also, if it helps and you're not in a rush, I am putting together an ordering process tutorial since a lot of people aren't sure about all of the options to select when ordering.
@@Shmuptopia oh t.y. man, checking website out
No problem at all. @@timdane6132
This is the game that got me into shmups many years ago now. Awesome stuff!!
That's solid! It remains one of my favorites! I cleared it two years ago and it was great playing with another person this time around. Thanks for watching!
Sup! Glad to see you upload.
Thanks for tuning in!
@@Shmuptopia I am kinda lost right now. I am not sure if I should get another shmups or not. I am actually looking for something I can get deep into, something arcade-y. I need something similar to a shmup but not really a shmup. I got into on-rails but modern on-rails are pretty dead.
Outzone is the answer
@@soratheorangejuicemascot5809 Try out Ex-Zodiac, that might be your cup of tea. It's basically an indie rail shooter with elements of Star Fox and Space Harrier.
Is this game 2-player simultaneous? I can't find an answer anywhere.
According to the Nintendo website, this is single system (1-2). That said, I've never tested this myself.
When I say jellyfish, I meant Squid! Thanks for catching that, BareKnuckleRoo!
It's such a great game. I just wish the non mobile ports split jump and shoot into separate buttons, because when you're weaving left and right near a wall, an accidental wall jump is all too easy. Misinterpreted inputs are sadly a consequence of limited control schemes. I also wish the screenshake could be disabled. It's just way too aggressive at times and the difficulty comes largely from that if you're using Shotgun. Great run. I don't like Boulder style's faster fall acceleration and reduced bounce height, but the extra max HP is undeniably good and if you're not aware of combos or struggle with them then Boulder'd definitely be handy. I used to use knife and fork a lot but lately I seem to avoid it until later; I find it encourages me to make poor choices and be overaggressive about grabbing corpses to eat. >w>;;
That video thumbnail hahahahah
Yeah, it was the best way forward!
Hello!i started today on the ps5 ..thank you for the video
Thanks so much for checking this out and enjoy!
