    Since I always try to combo its strange to see someone playing more safe, maybe this explain why I never finished downwell

    • @Shmuptopia
      @Shmuptopia 3 минуты назад

      That could be part of it. With my playstyle, I noticed that once I knew each area, I was able to consistently reach the final boss every run. So I think the more defensive approach I went with nicely translates to increased chances of completing any given run. Hard mode may require a different set of strategies though due to how insane it is. Thanks for checking this out.

    Hello, Shmuptopia! This is my first comment. I'm happy to see Shmuptopia plays Downwell since I've also just been playing it. I found it quite interesting to see how play style of each player varies. Your play style is more defensive, more cautious and safer. My play style is more aggressive and eager to continue combos to gain a bonus battery and life. I'm frequently hit and damaged but bonus gems also compensate for it. I've just made a whole run of normal mode with floating style (fuwafuwa style in Japanese; I don't know its English name). Floating style falls slower so it's easier to find the next enemy or other object to jump on. It matches my strategy. After that I tried usual style but it turned out to be more difficult. I'm still struggled with how fast it falls...maybe I should imitate your play style. Possibly you'll find another aspect of this game by changing play style. So far up-side-down style looks the most difficult to me.

    Had a friend first have me briefly try Downwell on his PS4 by just handing me the controller and saying: "Play this." Its simplistic controls and graphics made for an Atari-like experience, but with excellent (reverse) platforming and shooter mechanics. Though I only played it briefly, I was intrigued. When it was on sale on the Switch, I immediately purchased. It was great because I also had neglected my Flip-grip (a Switch tate device) and this was compatible and a super fun way to play. I was able to really get into the game in handheld tate. And later having a great time playing Downwell on the Switch OLED for those deep blacks against the magestic monochromatic colors. I love its simplistic, yet challenging gameplay. Plus that "one more try" addictiveness is in full effect. It goes on sale often for $2. Highly recommend!

    • @Shmuptopia
      @Shmuptopia 21 час назад

      That's solid! I almost never even think about the flip-grip because I'm always playing docked, but it's definitely a cool item. I purchased one way back and then the Special Reserve Games version of Downwell came with a flip-grip as well. I don't have the OLED but I can just imagine how nice that looks! Thanks for watching.

    I mostly played Downwell on PSVita, and it was a great time. I found it didn't have much longevity, all things considered, but that's not much of a problem. If you want to get more out of it though, also try beating the game without entering any side rooms, except the one right before the boss. If you don't know why, you'll see when you make it. It's nothing major, but I was surprised there's something hidden like that. I was obsessed with combos, so my favorite upgrades are the one that sucks gems in, combined with the one that reloads some ammo when you pick up gems; and the thrusters that let you stall your descent. Btw, there's a wall jump in the game, which is also nice for maintaining combos. See if you can figure out how to do it. I suppose yet another challenge run would be to keep a combo going for as long as possible, but I found it kinda painful to miss out on so many bonuses. Maybe if I revisit the game and I still wanna strive for something.

    • @Shmuptopia
      @Shmuptopia День назад

      I think replay value will vary from person to person depending on what they all want to do. A no-damage run in this would be a wild time. I'm intrigued to see what happens when you avoid rooms. As for wall-jumping, I didn't really feel there was much use based on how I was playing but I'd imagine it could come in handy for others. Thanks for checking this out!

    I play most shmups on PC on a keyboard, does that count? Ahahah. I suspect that a hitbox style stick is better than a Dpad in the sense that you can make more rapid up/down or left/right alternating movements, not that it's usually necessary to do these in a shmup. I used to play Dpad a ton for stuff but nowadays I find a Dpad simply doesn't have the precision of a stick or a hitbox style controller.

    • @Shmuptopia
      @Shmuptopia День назад

      I hear that! I still use dpad casually if I'm not doing anything too serious, but for tackling certain things, dpad is pretty risky. I also did a clear of Graze Master GM a number of weeks ago using the DOIO Hitpad controller I did a video on and that's a very simple and generous game, but it was still a lot of fun playing through it on a different controller.

      @@ginxxyamiThe Haute42 controllers are solid and I would like to check more of them out before long. I think each person will have certain controller types that feel the most natural for certain genres. I'm currently working on a controller review for one that has a dpad for directions and then 24mm arcade buttons for actions. Using dpad for fighting games doesn't feel natural to me, but platformers and whatnot fit the bill a little better currently. Eager to share the video when it's finished.

It took them quite some time to release an all-button controller even though they could have done this much earlier, so perhaps they're not going to be too quick to experiment with different button layouts. This game wasn't on my radar at all. I'm happy with youtube's algorithm, for once. I just didn't entirely understand the stakes of the game from what you described. If you run out of lives, do you go back to some point when the game saved, or do you start from scratch? Either way, I think the very limited margin for error probably adds a lot of tension. Obvious as that is, I think it's pretty important.

      In a straightforward sense, things are more aggressive much earlier than they would be if playing on a lower difficulty. I haven't jumped into the easiest mode, so I'm not sure how little that throws at the player but you can definitely spot the difference between difficulty 5 and 7 if you were to jump into the game and compare them. There may be other factors that I'm unaware of. The enemy count is always the same from what I've played, it's just that their behavior is different. Trust this helps!

    One thing that didn't make it into this video but which is absolutely amazing is that, when you've been paused for a while, you'll start to hear scritch-scratching sounds, like someone or something is walking up to you. I absolutely love this! The only reason I stumbled upon this was because I had paused while recording gameplay and working on editing the video.

    Sounds awesome and this was a great breakdown of why and how the Game achieves its horror so effectively. Especially interesting to see that arcade elements (Limited Lives, boss fights, etc) are arguably the bedrock for the tension.

      Thanks for checking this out and commenting. I appreciate the feedback and am happy to hear you enjoyed this. It was a blast working on this video. It's one of those things - you'll have ideas about what the game all does, but when you buckle down to examine it more closely, you start seeing a great deal more. You're spot on about the tension, too and I think that's a huge part of what still keeps things wild. It wouldn't be nearly as exhilarating if the player had more to work with or unlockables to access over multiple runs. It's such a thrilling ride as is.

    Really enjoyed this Dace. Although as much as I’d like to play it, I’m kinda glad you’ve played through it so I can live vicariously 😂 Not sure my nerves could take it! I love the gameplay ideas though & think it’s a really interesting way of progressing thru a game - funnily enough it hits a lot of the gameplay design positives that MarkMSX talks about in his latest video about permadeath in games. I’ll defo pick it up at some point but maybe won’t be able to give it the hours it deserves.

      No worries, man! It's one of those games where - in order to have footage for covering everything, I needed to beat it again and given the nature of Overwhelm, I had no idea if it would be a matter of days or well over a week when the script alone was a already over a week to bang out. Getting this finalized kept me up late last night. Glad you enjoyed this video, though! These days, I don't have too many permadeath games on the go like I used to (especially before Shmups), but I still love this kind of framework. That post I shared on Twitter last week about clearing Shiren 6 for the first time, that's an absolutely solid roguelike and it inspires me to get back at Shiren 5, Tangledeep, and others at a gradual pace. Thanks for popping by!

    Put it in writing and call it a manifesto, this is a MTP chocked full of the flavors I crave in shmup adjacent media. Spiders meshes so well with the series and I can’t imagine a better candidate to speak their piece. While I could easily write an essay per topic that was discussed, I will focus in on two. My biggest perspective change in shmups was realizing that scoring in not “the next level” but rather a different journey altogether. But like many journeys, portions of the path run parallel and can be traversed in tandem. I would have never attempted the Crimzon Clover Arcade original 1CC if I hadn’t been forced to engage with the scoring system through the time attack mode. Being corralled into making score centric play viable by maximizing score potential and minimizing run length (5 minutes for CC time attack) is like a hyperbolic time chamber for understanding shmups in a different light. I highly recommend caravan style shmups to players nervous about trying to score a game they can’t clear. Low stakes due to concise run times and high reward in that your score improvements will be exponential early on. Second point regarding training and discipline. Learning to learn is something you can learn preemptively, but learning how YOU learn is something that comes with time. I know players who boot up emulators and will build out save states to practice with on their first time through a game because they know they’ll want to go back and use those established checkpoints to spring their practice off by regimenting their play to point towards success. And I know players (myself include) who have a very fluid approach to tackling shmups that still requires dedication and practice. My training model is pointed towards understanding the requests of the game, and creating training conditions that best emulate the live experience of the run. This can involve much hopping between practice modes, live runs, replay analysis, and most importantly: breaks from playing to allow your brain to decouple your time spent into usable information. But I wouldn’t have known that was my preferred style had I not tried other methods. Experiment with yourself and the game will speak to you. Absolutely phenomenal episode. Spiders is incredibly eloquent and I’m glad he was able to crack the nut of Shmuptopia and give the listeners more insight into Dace. Now we just gotta get the three of us together for a podcast haha. Thank you both for this!

    • @Shmuptopia
      @Shmuptopia 26 дней назад

      Absolutely! I think part of what makes scoring initially appear to be the next step is that it's a path that is about getting better than before and to have as much room to work with for scoring. The ideal foundation would be to know how to clear a game pretty consistently so that you have the entire run to score in as opposed to only knowing the first couple of stages. It's misleading, though I can understand why many see what appears to be a natural progression pointing toward clearing, then scoring. You share a great point about how you might never have gotten into CC OG without dabbling with the scoring system. It's great how we can sometimes see that something is more approachable once we realize we have certain tools or knowledge at our disposal. Without that, an experience can often feel much more challenging. In many cases, even having a basic grasp of a system, like in your example, is enough to see significant changes when applied to the full run. Yeah, I'm totally on board for a session with the three of us at some point. I think dungeon crawlers would definitely be a solid time, but we'll see what we can cook up. Thanks so much for checking this out and sharing your thoughts!

    Thanks guys that was amazing to hear! If I can put my grain of salt about the "1CC is just the beginning, you need to go further", I agree and disagree 😁. For me who is really into Shmups for less than 3 years 1CC is the perfect balance between knowing a game without passing 6 months and hundreds of hours on it! I'm very curious and still in "discovery mode" in the genre so I wish to clear a few Toaplan, Cave, Psikyo, NMK, Konami, IREM, Touhou, other Doujins, Raizing, Compile, Technosoft, etc to have a little overview of the genre and then put a lot of times in the few I really love (I already put few titles on this list that I need to go back later ^^)

      I feel the same way…I really liked when Dace put it in the context of a relationship because I do feel like as a new player I am “young” and “playing the field” but in the back of my mind I’m maybe not looking but am hoping for “the one”. As excited as I am to gallivant around the genre, I’m also secretly jealous of those that can just pour thousands of hours into one game and be satisfied. C'est la vie! I think knowing that there’s more for us even if we’re done for know is okay. I also love checking out your videos of new games so keep going :)
