9:09 this is what my fellow Suguri player is telling me. Suguri's hard mode is very very intense but it doesnt mean that what you learn from normal mode is obsolete. In that game, the more lasers and live ammo you destroy or graze, the faster your hyper meter recharges. The thing that made the hard mode of Suguri more challenging is that overusing your dash, grazing on beams and excessive dash cancelling can also be a life and death situation. . . My friend told me that some boss in Suguri is harder on easy mode compare to normal mode since Pod hyper + spread dash cancel shotguns arent consistent.
Thanks for watching as always! It's always neat seeing what things are easier on harder difficulties or even entire exploits that become available because of one factor or another.
Great to see you revisit these Psikyo games Dace. I had a blast with Samurai Aces but never pushed the mode beyond normal - might be time to visit soon(ish - Garegga’s got me very focused right now!). I’d really love another crack at Gunbird 2 too - I didn’t get that one - unfinished business there! Very interesting to hear your thoughts on difficulty too, got me thinking that has!
Thanks, brother! These Psikyo games are such a blast every time I get back to them. No matter how many times I jump in, they always feel fresh. GB2 is one of my considerations for the next episode, by the way. I didn't have one planned like I normally do, and that one feels like a great option!
Oh man, I had no idea Ayin's localized name is "FLUSH THE SAMURAI"- that's hilarious! Really enjoyed the script in this video. It was really informative and makes me want to boot up a Psikyo STG. Cheers!
Good to mention Aero Fighters (and Video System in general) in relation to the early Psikyo games. The style was already there in the beginning, and as time went on it was really perfected. Psikyo games rule because they're fast and really fun to just run through. I think with that difficulty thing, with how Psikyo games are designed, once you get the feel for them, it just clicks and all of them become much easier to approach (outside of Sengoku Blade because it's just different). I've never really put time into clears for them (my arcade only had Aero Fighters 2 and Strikers 1945 back in the day), but they always feel to me very doable with just a little dedication, even with some of the cheaper stuff that sometimes pops up.
@@MotWhinnana Thanks for the solid comment! Yeah, Sengoku Blade is an interesting one. I cleared the first loop twice a couple of years ago (one clear for each route you can take) and it's an incredible game. Lots of cool characters and wicked bosses, plus the visuals are top notch.
Playing the Aero Fighters 2 Arcade Archives caravan was what made Psikyo “click” for me. They still kick my butt around, but I love Psikyo games so much!
I just never get the feel for Psikyo games, don't remember what put me off, but this looks surprisingly easy. Nothing too fast, few patterns that'll catch you off guard the first few times around, and rather short overall, so failed attempts won't cut into people's time as much. Guess this goes on the backlog now. Graze Counter GM was fun, I remember picking it up after seeing your videos on it, can only recommend it. Easy to pick up, easy to see quick improvements, very satisfying for people with less time or who get easily frustrated.
Yeah, Graze Counter GM is a very approachable one since it gives you an absurd amount of resources to use. Because of that, the longevity per run is off the charts. The dev is currently working on a horizontal shooter, so that will be interesting to check out eventually. I'd love to see another vertical one for sure with how much I enjoyed GCGM. Thanks for checking this out!
Great video Dace! I watched your previous Samurai Aces video and really wanted to get the game but never got around it, but I’ll do that now. This always looked like a fun one, and I love the samurai influence
@@mattatsu Thanks for watching this man! I appreciate the time you are able to set aside with everything you have on the go these days. Yeah, the Psikyo games are all fantastic in their own unique way and it's part of why I wanted to start sharing these again.
Such a wonderful point to make and a great game to do it with - I had this experience with Andro Dunos 2 where I was intimidated to try and push the harder difficulties as I was so relieved to get the easy clear, I didn’t even realize that the only real difference from Easy to Normal was the bosses… stages are identical, and you lose the power level on hit. As happy as I am with my journey overall, I wished I pushed through earlier and didn’t wait a year to have the confidence. I traded confidence in my skill for knowledge and familiarity, and honestly it was a wash. I’m glad I pushed through to the “Very Hard” the second time around, and made the deliberate choice to go for the World Record score next year to celebrate like an anniversary, and remind myself of the lesson. Psikyo really messes with players with the “Child”, “Monkey”, “Very Easy”, etc., but you’re right that the difficulty curve is far more compressed than it appears - more Psikyo illusions! The really might be the masters in that regard! I LOVE the poetic description of the river - it’s my favorite stage as well! The chances of me firing up Samurai Aces this weekend is now 100% :)
Thanks for jumping in on this one and sharing. Yeah, Psikyo has a number of tricks up their sleeve when it comes to either intentional or unintentional player manipulation. The amount of times you don't need to move during certain boss attacks is wild but there's the startle factor because you just see this fast spray of bullets suddenly coming at you. I'd love to hear how things go when you jump in this weekend! Thanks again man!
@@Shmuptopia Played for an hour tonight with headphones on and the river stage will never be the same! Your musings added so much texture. And bonus: I think I found a new favorite ship and some stronger routes :)
This is an awesome update man! The river of tortured souls beckons. Keep me posted. This game is such a classic that any tidbits of backstory are exciting to know.@@SpidersSTG

Thanks man! I had a lot of fun writing this episode. As for Ayin, I've also seen "Flash" used, so Flush may be a typo. Who knows for sure!
