I have the 2018 D-Max, and I love it, but if I was in the market for a new dual cab, the new BT-50 would be my choice, hands down!

I would express my unbiased opinion on this car owning one for a year and a avid racer and ex automotive Engineer… It has a great driveline, great torque and economy. The electronics are well below par and dangerous. Car would brake hard for no reason in different circumstances and surprised I never had an accident in it. Lane assist would run off the road and want to push into traffic. Or, if overtaking a parked car, It would pull you towards the parked car. The seat was horrible and the neck position would push it forward, would always have a sore back if drove it more than 30 min.
After contacting the dealer a few times, they admitted this (on phone) that the electronics are an issue and many customers were concerned and nothing can be done about it. They checked it out and nothing was wrong with it??? BS
After having an incident where we almost had a very serous accident because it decided emergency brake for no reason, I decided to sell it ASAP.

Don't worry as my work Hilux does the same with parked cars! Scared the shit out me the first time it did it. It's now permanently turned off. I wonder with all these new cars having this "safety" technology fitted, how many people actually turn it off, I reckon it would be a large number. Which begs the question, how safe is it?

As a four wheel driver, I want to know about gearing ratio's, especially in low-range because I need to compare for run-away on steep gradients both forward and in reverse. Another consideration that is important is range from standard fuel tank. What are capacities, as I want to judge about after market long range tanks for touring? A segment where the vehicle is placed on a hoist to few potential vulnerable points, voids for extra tanks, second batteries etc, would be far more relevant than a brief splash in a creek crossing which bares no relevance to any form of water crossing in the real world. A quick assessment of the air intake position is another very important consideration for a 4x4 and needs to be compared to other vehicles, because if we don't complain about sub-standard appointments, then the makers will keep churning out inappropriate junk that has to be rectified after market. Or at the very least, we take our buying dollar elsewhere. I know your background is not in off-roading, but I hope some of my suggestions will go some distance in helping you to understand what an off-road driver needs to consider over and above the usual black-top driving consumer.

We collect our manual XTR on wednesday and cant see the extra $14k for trim upgrade and bar work. We went for a manual as we enjoy driving and consider a manual transmission will not overheat when towing and hopefully lower maintenance costs.

9.4 seconds 0-100 is just as fast as the 500nm Colorado, which is quite impressive. I'm surprised though at how the BT-50 rides considering how the D-Max was praised for its ride quality. Could it be caused by the extra plastic bits found on the X-Terrain that add a little bit more weight?

It is weird that The BT 50 is actually the cheaper option out of the two. Everywhere I see an LS U Dmax for sale, it is consistently around 63k drive away. Whereas the XTR BT 50 can be seen for under 60k drive away quite often, and its a more "luxury" featured vehicle.

I'm from the US so we don't got this but I am a huge Mazda Fan. The tail gate gives me old school keep it simple vibes and I like it actually. With the Tail lights, I like how the headlights and taillights have the same slant type style. I asked a bloke working at the big Sydney Mazda dealer how his new Isuzu one compared to the 3.2 Ford/Mazda and he replied that nothing can compare with them. They just out perform the rest of the utes by far. At least they will keep giving you cars if you keep telling them what they want to hear, feels like a better engine,LOL
