- Disability Performance Art in the Global East: Exploring Multi-Embodiments across Bodies and Aesthetics
This seminar will explore the challenges and new horizons for cross-bodies aesthetics offered by disability performance art and the ways this field promotes engagement across diverse bodies and sensory experiences in the Global East-Eastern Europe, East Asia, and the Middle East. We frame this within the realms of “new multiculturalism” politics and performance, unifying three lines of inquiry: The anthropological study of the political impact of theater and dance; Disability studies’ examination of how disability performance art reshapes perceptions of bodymind differences; And ethnographic investigations into cross-regional cultural and artistic exchange in the Global East. The seminar, organized as two roundtables, will place the body and senses at the forefront of analyzing social disparities and navigating multiplicity, investigating the impact of different adaptations within Global East regions on disability arts.
