- "I had this idea to make more than one watch a year. How was I going to do that? How do you take an idea into production and build watches? So that was massive. Again, I was back into working six to seven days a week. I didn't take holidays, didn't earn any money. And that went on for ten years. The business just about scraped through every single year. We were teetering on whether we would be able to survive. I just kept focusing on the quality and kept focusing on what I wanted to achieve, then eventually I hoped that everything would come right. And it did."
This is Roger W. Smith's Life Story.
Roger W. Smith OBE established his studio in 2001 with an unswerving ethos to craft watches to a peerless standard of horological excellence. His journey has been one of continual discovery. Mastering the Daniels Method, the art of hand-crafting a watch (devised by his mentor, the great George Daniels) was his first great challenge. Since then, Roger has spent the last decade exploring the future of mechanical watchmaking. This has taken him into previously unexplored territory. Ultimately, discovering new worlds of possibility within the microcosm of timekeeping.
Over two months, The Hour Glass has premiered a series of short films on nine of the world’s leading contemporary artists and independent watchmakers. Featuring: Maximilian Büsser (MB&F), Sir David Adjaye OBE RA (Adjaye Associates), Rexhep Rexhepi (Akrivia), Daniel Arsham, Wieki Somers (Studio Wieki Somers), Roger W. Smith, Marc Newson, Oki Sato (nendo), Felix Baumgartner & Martin Frei (URWERK). Commissioned by The Hour Glass, these portraits profile the journey of these cultural wunderkinds and document their dedication to their craft.

He sounds so passionate and happy about his work. A true master
You're quite right, at the bench, Roger is absolutely in the zone.
The philosophy of George Daniels is quite simply astonishing, and to see Roger Smith follow his steps in a way that it was well deserved, is absolutely incredible. This is true watchmaking, this is what Breguet would be doing in contemporary times and I hope some person out there is already starting their journey to be the next Daniels or Smith.
You're absolutely right, it's a joy to see the advancement of horology in in real time. The future looks bright.
Really enjoyed hearing Smith talk about the evolution of his mindset.
An inspirational story and a pleasure to be a fly on the wall for a few days in the workshop.
What an amazing story! A man and a Brand happily surviving without outside influences and quietly advancing modern day Horological solutions! Bravo👏❤😍
Couldn't agree more. Thanks for joining us, it was a pleasure filming this on the beautifully remote Isle of Man.
Amazing production of the video
Wow ! The creative ability of man.
He's so inspirational - I love his perseverance, his commitment to wanting to make a watch and improving his work. I liked what George Daniels said to him the first time they met - "I can't teach you how to make a watch. You've got teach yourself. If you're driven, you'll do it". And the part where GD said congrats - you're a watchmaker - that brought tears to me eyes! Thank you The Hour Glass for this glimpse into the man behind his watches.
Thank you for the heartfelt comment - it's nigh impossible to not feel emotionally invested in both the late George Daniels, and Roger Smith's watchmaking journey.
This video is an inspiration for everyone, not just watch lovers.
I have a deep love for mechanics, machines and all things mechanical. I hope to become a surgeon one day.I would love to own a George Daniels or Roger Smith watch.
This is an absolutely stunning showcase that beautifully highlights the intense passion that goes into an artist's work. Craftsmanship of the highest order. Well done The Hour Glass!
Mr. George Daniels is a remarkable man and gifted horologist. Thanks to you, The Hour Glass, we were able to take a unique journey in the understanding of just how difficult it is for one to become a master of his craft. Grit and heart on display!
I am definitely a fan of Roger Smith and I loved hearing his passion about watchmaking and his story about his relationship with George Daniels. Great piece!
Thank you. You're quite right, his passion to uphold the art and craft of horology is inspiring.
Watchmaking is a kind of transferring philosophical and physical time of the universe into practical and understandable applications. This is done through the beauty of perfect engineering and thinking. Hence the greatness of this profession.
a great man, as the apprentice of the very great man would be.
Indeed, thanks for joining us Jay.
Wonderful! It was nice to take 12 minutes out of my day and revisit this headspace. Anyway... back to finishing my watch!

Outstanding work, truly remarkable to creat a tiny machine that is able to tell God’s time for the day and night and prove His creation. God made all and his creation compliments his handy work!! How miraculous!!!!! We’ll done Sir, I’m sure He is pleased with you!! I have owned several minor crafted watches before but at least I knew how to mark my day and plan accordingly!!
