- Arthritis is the wear of the normal lining or cartilage of the joint and can occur in any or multiple joints around the foot and ankle.
In most people, there is no definitive cause and probably relates to the enormous stresses across the joint even when walking.
We've asked expert orthopaedic surgeon Mr Paul Hamilton to explain what arthritis of the foot feels like and how it can be treated.

My feet feel like they’ve been beat with a sledge hammer. They hurt 24 hr a day.
how did that started happening
Mine do to
Me too! Or…it feels like someone is shoving a nail under my big toe. Or burning fire pain on top of my foot. This has happened over one year. I’m 67. Finally just went to MD and they state that I have big spurs now around the joint. I’m two weeks out of right foot surgery where they tried to remove the spurs for some relief. They say the spurs will eventually grow back but trying to avoid the dreaded fusion and down time for now. I’m still having pain so not sure if this is working or not. If not I will bite the bullet and do the fusion. I can barely walk and Im really worried that I could end up not being mobile plus I can’t wear shoes …I wear slippers. They make it sound so easy to fix but it’s not. Anyway I’ve gone from totally active to being barely able to walk within one year. I feel so bad for anyone with this condition.
As if gout attacks in my foot weren't bad enough, now I have to deal with arthritis flare ups.
thanks doctor very informative.
Improperly treated gout caused arthritis in my big toe. I'm an avid runner now docile for last 6 months. Considering surgery.
When I bend my foot back or forth or just press against my top joint of my foot it’s like I have pain or when I press it against the floor on my tippy Toes on the floor
How did you manage it then? Is it still hurts?
django unchained yes it still hurts idk the pain bothers me but I just can’t stop bending it

Search about turf toe its helpfull to you
I've got everything with my big toe, hallux limitus, rigidus turf toe, ... joints are a big problem as well. I've tried everything, all the scans in hospital. Only thing they can do is give painkillers and taping. Taping however is not that practical and is only practical for a few days. A brace doesn't do the job as well. I'm at wits end of what to do. Have it for 10 months now, due to injury
I know how you feel. I wondered in the past couple of days why different areas hurt in my feet and I can literally feel arthritic nodules in different parts of my feet. The only thing I can do is to try and purchase shoes that do not rub on those areas. I use taping methods and so far these have helped me. But I am shocked, literally shocked how all of a sudden I can feel a rheumatoid nodule in an area that was not there before. I used to think they are bone spurs and I do believe I have some of those too. But now I think some of them are Rheumatoid nodules.
I kind of knew that scans would only confirm what I know and I would like to have it examined but surgeons want to operate and I do not.
When I went to the gym and worked out regularly my joint pain was not as severe.
So today I went back to the gym, the first pain experienced in my feet reminded me of what it feels like at first: it makes me want to give up, but I also remember that despite that pain the feet react to such stress with repair measures and the muscles eventually will strengthen.
First couple of minutes were excruciating on the elliptical machine but I stuck it out and in a way I know I need that stress on my feet because in the end it will help.
It is weird that way. Really weird. Because one also has to be careful not to stress certain areas too much.
Have you tried footie toe socks? They make them both for men and women. I also use a double loop that separates my big toe from my 2nd toe.
@@dm5129 I agree about going to the gym. Have you continued to exercise those areas? Thanks
Barefoot shoes like Vivo or grounders help relieve my pain
It's been a minute so I'll give you an update. I moved away from taping, only using it when my foot was in a bad state. I also moved away from painkillers because your body gets used to it. The withdrawal was terrible. I moved to neural therapy. And after I also tried acupuncture and light exercise. It's gotten to the point where I can live life normally without major problems but it will never fully heal. If you buy the right shoes and exercise, it can do wonders. I do still take the occasional painkiller but I am happy to say I can live life mostly as I want to.
I have to say barefoot shoes do not help much because they engage your joints too much. It's better to buy proper shoes with rigid soles if you're on your feet. I suggest to move to more flexible shoes only if you are at the stage where you have more mobility and can stand prolonged flexible movement. It takes time and a lot of patience. It's better to move away from pain medication. You will be in a lot of pain but if you spend time to properly take care of it and try to make it better. You will see results in the long run.
How to treat arthritis of sesamoid bone
Hello doctor,
I am in Denmark, where are you located in Britain.
I am only 32 years and i have foot arthritis. It's taken a toll on my body.
Please kindly help.
I have pain on the top of my big toe with arthritis, but the bottom of my big toe has pain also. its feels like the pad is worn out. I don't understand why it feels different than the top pain.
Dear Michael, it could be because of how putting weight on the toes affects the pain felt. We recommend asking your doctor next time you see them, and if it's causing discomfort, consider seeing your doctor sooner as they would probably have helpful advice for you to follow. Best wishes, the TD Team
Thank you
How is it I show nearly every symptom of this at 21 years old because I got stepped on playing football in highschool
I did not notice I had any foot pain until I started tapering myself off of pain medication. I was told I add metatarsalgia. Then on x-ray showed that I had arthritis in my great toes. Is the ball of the foot pain caused by arthritis in the toes or is it separate?
mine is the underside of the joint and feels like my foot has had the skin peeled off and burnt with a blow torch. wish i could do a job that involved less time on my feet . Going to try and loose weight !
I'm going through this too after going for an intense run. Do you have arthritis?
@@tannermingo2811 I was diagnosed as having it , am managing it by cutting out sugar , reducing /cutting out meat , coffee , tea and soda , think sugar is the big one though, i get a flare up if i have a treat binge. Walking around in stiff soled mountaineering boots or a orthopedic blow up boot for a couple of days calms it down. hope this helps.

Im not sure what is making my joints in my feet swell.. Im only 36 yrs old. I wonder if fibromyalgia can cause this pain??? Because i have fibro.. and have had similar pain in other joints in my body. I just soak my feet in epsom salt and other ingrediants that i add then. I end up rubbing some good old smelly bengay on them.lol it helps.. does arthritis. Make the joint inflammed?? Because my joint on the side of my foot sticks out.
.
Swelling is related to heart and kidney health. Arteriosclerosis and CHF

Yes, people without arthritis do not know how excruciating this pain is. After exercising I even felt some pain in the back today. I am scared that arthritis will spread to other areas. However I am now committed to always going to the gym to strengthen my body again.
People can call and tell me to do all kinds of things: but my health will come first. Oh, sure I will fulfill my obligations but in the forefront on any given day I will put the exercise that will keep me healthy.
Lordy yes like having a knife stick through my foot...

Usually the crackiness is a sign of arthritis i believe. That's what I've been told anyways try taking fish oils or sunflower seed oil its got alot of omega 3 in it. Glucosamine. or eat geletin all of these are great for the joints and inflamation also pineapple juice helps with inflamation

Mine also cracks, I do it wiggling my big toe, and it usually relieves the extreme burning pain.
What if my feet have this sensation every 30 or so seconds to a minute where a tingly and shocking feeling goes through them simultaneously and it hurts and feels like needles are coming out of my feet... is this arthritis

I am slowly going to introduce anti inflammatory herbs, because so much about this has to do with internal inflammation.
@@dm5129 thank you for your reply. Doctor recommended me tests ie RA and uric acid. Even i did XRay of my foot. Results were all negative. It wasnt issue due to uric acid or arthritis, nor there was any fracture. After seeing reports, Dr said that i need no medicine, in some days my foot will be ok. It took total of 1 month time. I can still feel the knot on my foots finger. But its not paining now.
@@dm5129though i dont have arthritis, i would appreciate if you introduce herbs for the same. i can feel, in what pain other peoples are.
