Some reviewers have noted the out of the box sharpness of the Epson 3 LCD. Epson does get really sharp with it’s image enhancement and super resolution along with pixel shifting, which makes the Epson incredibly tack sharp, you’ll see every facial pore, and along with gamma curve adjustments, the brightness and color are truly fantastic. The LG setup with ALR screen in my opinion, is way too expensive for the picture size it offers and Epson can go way bigger 200” and still look great for movies. In addition Epson has fantastic customer support (LG ?) Thanks for the nice review.
Does this projector have a fully focused screen from top to bottom and corner to corner? cos lamp projectors (even expensive projectors) always will have only one part of the screen focus and the rest is horrible
Chris, do you feel the short throw projectors can really replace a regular TV? Would be awesome to see an 85 inch tv vs the best short throw projector side by side with ambient lighting (open windows) to see the true difference. Thanks for your videos!
I think this is about the type of experience you are after. For black levels and contrast ratios, a TV will look better. But, imo, movies should be projected as the Director intended. Whilst UST has some compromises compared with their long-throw cousins, the UST does provide a more natural image that is much more authentic and I find less tiring to watch. As an LG HU85LS owner, I am delighted with the experience. But I only really use it for movies and sports. I revert to my 65inch OLED for other duties. Hope that helps a bit.
You said in your previous review that long throw projectors have higher resolution quality than short throws. Generally speaking. But hardly noticeable right?
Correct. Its more difficult for manufacturers to get a perfectly focused image on the screen from such a short distance so long throws are better at this.
Hi, great summary ! there one more point worth to note about UST projectors, their very short angle of projection will magnify even the least defect or wave in the screen. I had very bad experience with elite screen motorized tensioned in ceiling screen. I see horrible horizontale lines in the image highlights (eg sky, white back ground). Customer support claimed this is a weakness related to UST projection angle and that UST projector shall be used (only) with fixed frame screens... now I’m switching to a regular throw projector...
Do you know if any short throw projectors display the aspect ratio 2:40.1 or is that only standard throw projectors that do that cause i know they all do 16:9?

Gaming vs Media. While I know there are always exceptions, would you say that UST's are "better" for movies, and the standard throw have "better" options for someone into gaming? I see a lot of your reviews, and many of the short throw's seem to have a higher latency on average (4K gaming).
Really good sumup of the differences. Just wanted to point out that there is a 3LCD ultra short throw projector from Epson (LS500) so if you're allergic to DLP rainbows there is an other option. One advantage of standard throw projector like UB5050 is motorized lens that enables using different zooms for different content. That is a must if you want to use 2.39:1 screen instead 16:9. Also more costly option for this, the anamorphic lens is also only usable with standard throw.
@@rathishrajenderan7668 If you have light controlled room I would recommend 6050. LS500 lacks DCI-P3 wide color gamut that 6050 has. So with 6050 you will get the real colors of UHD contents.
If you go with the UST, you have to have a fixed, perfectly flat projection screen. Any wrinkle or imperfection on the screen will show up in the picture. I love my UST, but there’s a few trade offs.
The best review I ever seen, specially because you compare dark and light environment with the same video synchronized and I know that took I time to do that. Awesome job my man.
Picked up a 6040ub for only 1700$!! Full 3 year warranty as well. It’s so nice even with an old bulb. I would get yourself one before you are stuck buying a 3000$+ projector
Do you usually overhang your image that much? That short throw looked like it was set up a few inches too big for that screen, at least from how I do it usually when we do home installs.
Ah never mind that looks like some kind of backlighting, interesting. Nice to find this since I’m just starting out doing professional setups and stuff, kind of apprenticing rn.
Ultra Short Throw in 1080P - GT1080 (200" - easily) is still great. Regarding lamp replacement, if you even consider to buy 4000 bucks projector, 200-300 will be nuts for you. As well 4000-5000 hours it is about 5 years by 3 hours in every singe day. Regarding "do not need professional installation" - you have very specific fancy screen, with normal screen under that angle I assume that it will be huge reflection from screen to the ceiling
Yep. I think the screen he used in the video is about $700 (almost double the price for an ALR screen that's the same brand and size but for standard projectors). You can project on a standard white or gray screen though if it's going in a room with good light control.
I have a cheap long throw projector, I place it on a tripod rather than the ceiling. The biggest issue is the noise so close to my head. I'd like an ultra short throw just to have the noise coming from a place further from me!
What your suggest for bright office? What would be optimal lm for projector? And aren't short throw projectors brighter, because they are floser to screen?
Making a home theater in the basement of our new house. Which projector would you recommend? I'd like to go bigger than 130 inch. This may or may not be specifically for the Snyder cut
To me, the major drawback of the HU85LA is the lack of replaceable light source, so it's inevitable e-waste (compared to just replacing bulbs). I often don't see this highlighted in UST projector videos. I only use DLP lamp projectors displays throughout my home. I have about 10,000 lamp hours clocked over 4 years on my BenQ projector, so the LG in theory would need to be completely replaced every 6-8 years (cost of ownership: $1000/year). This is equivalent to ~7 hours of watch-time per day every year. In theory, a projector like the Epson (while having re-occuring costs) will last as long as you want it too (and adjusting for "official" bulb (not third-party) costs the cost of ownership of this projector is $666/yr in the first 4 years if I replace the bulb 3 times and decreases to $625/yr in the first 8 years if I replace the bulb 6 times). If you can install a long-throw projector, you would need to clock a lot of lamp hours every years to make the LG cheaper. I love UST projectors due to their aesthetic (and I like the convenience of using them as youtube backgrounds), but I reaaaaaally want someone to make an economical version (light source replacements). I replace laser sources in my microscopes at work without issue or concern, so the option shouldn't be a safety issue as far as I understand. Until then, I will wait for Epson to release a true 4K ultra black projector (in the mean time, my bright AF 1080p BenQ is fine).
I doubt that your BenQ will survive 6 years running 7 hours a day but I don't have much data on this. I just think that's on the extreme side of projector use. I had my BenQ for a bit over a year before I had to have it repaired.
@@GizmoMaltese I hope it will. We'll see. I was surprised what the daily hours came out to doing some quick math. Maybe Ive owned it for longer than I remember. but so far thumbs up to this HT2150 going strong. Very impressed with my unit regardless of when it finally stops working. Placement for ultra short throw: put them in the ceiling? We have a short throw btw 104" on about 1.5 meter throw distance , which is half the short side of our living room. The vertical distance does matter too.
Hello, I'm new to the projector seen. I got an LG mini projector for free. Now I'm hooked on the picture size but the picture isn't the brightest. I'm trying to choose between a UST or ST projector because I need a big picture in a small space. The two I've chosen are Viewsonic px706hd and the Optoma GT5600. Plan on using them for watching movies in 3D and playing video games using the STR-169120-G Silver Ticket 120" screen. Could you please tell me? Have I made a good choice matching the screen to the projectors? And is the Optoma GT5600 a good choice for gaming?
I see you have the laser 4k projector on top of the Klipsch what looks like to be a 504C center channel. When movies are playing and the sound is at a good level does it cause issues with the image quality with the last bouncing around?
The biggest issue for me was center channel placement and mounting the UST projector low enough. A standard height TV stand is much too tall when trying to throw a 120" picture on a wall with 8 foot ceilings. The top of the picture will end up almost on the ceiling. Ideally, you want your eyes centered at 2/3rds of the way down the screen when sitting. I ended up having to make a custom piece of furniture that is 11" in height for the projector to sit on with a cubby hole on the bottom to hold my center speaker on the bottom. The lower shelf that holds the center channel has a ridge in front to help 'aim' the center speaker directly at the listeners ears when in the seating position 13 feet away. It isn't ideal to place the center near the floor, but it was my only option.
Chris, how come you have not talked about anachromatic lens or projecting on to 2.35:1 wide screen. Getting full picture on wide screen is very desired and there is not much info about which projectors can do it automatically. Thanks for your work
Hi Chris, i want to buy the optoma uhd60 or the uhd 65, with the Elite screens 135 inch. Can you tell me the distance between the screen and the projector. I have put the electric plug on the celling and becose you have the same screen and projector, you can help me.....thanks you
I am ceiling mounting Samsung LSP9T. I currently have a vu tech white screen. Should I install an alr screen and should the screen be installed upside down?
I just want to see side by side pictures of the same content in the same room of a good long throw and good short throw projector. I need to replace my old long throw and can't decide if I want to go with the formovie or some regular long throw
I am in the middle of installing an ultra short throw projector in my living room, and plan on using blackout motorized blinds as the screen. I would love for you to give your thoughts on this.
@@ChrisMajestic Thanks, will look into it. Can this be used together with a receiver? I have this on PC monitor now using Prismatik -- no HDMI capturing needed since information is generated by PC. I'm wondering if it has added value on a projector screen, since the immersion is already that much higher.
Trying to figure out which type of projector to get as I purchased the Sony 325es but would like to know your opinion on UST that may be better with contrast and HDR?
2 years have passed since this video was made, have ultra short throw projectors' picture quality caught up with long throw? If you had to choose between Epson LS12000 or ForMovie, which would you recommend?
Hey Chris.. Great video.. question.. is it a suitable long term solution for the UST to be on top of the Center channel? Just trying to figure out the best placement for it along with my center... SVS ultra Center... Thanks!
This is an old posting, but hoping you can tell me what system you use for the reactive LCD surround light behind the screen. I like this setup because it's subtle.
It depends on so many specific issues with the shape of the room! In my case, an ultra-short would end up being in the way of people moving around. A short-throw is best for me, but I need a VERY short throw. Most short-throws stop at a 1.2 ratio, but if I could find one with as low as a 1.0 ratio I would have the perfect screen size!
How do they compare on brightness in different lighting situations? Like in normal room (with windows) in daylight, normal room in the evening, home theater room (no windows) with dim lighting, and home theater room with all lights off. It seems the UST would be brighter overall particularly in normal brighter lighting situations since it has less distance to throw through? With any projection, yes, you're always going to want the room as dark as possible, but, if one of these projector styles does better in normal brighter lighting situations, that could be a deciding factor for a lot of people.
I have a built in ceiling center channel speaker and I love it. All of my speakers are in-ceiling and most people don't even realize I have surround until it's on.
I have a Mitsubishi Hc6800. I am using an 8x8 wall with a 4 feet inset wall for a screen. Will the Optoma ALR101e 100-inch High Performance Projector Screen with Ambient Light Technology - Black be beneficial for me? I do understand it is smaller than my wall.
Can you suggest between a "BENQ TK 850" and "VAVA 4k". I have a dedicated room in the basement with a Denon Receiver and Klipsch Theater reference pack. Because of the room being small/medium cannot go with a screen larger than 92 inch. Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.
Chris, I'm looking to purchase an epson 5050ub, but I have a low basement ceiling. 7'. And I'm still worried about it not being a true 4K projector. Do you have a pick for an affordable 4k (2500-3500). Knowing I have a limited ceiling height. Thanks!!
How about the keystone issue? Long Throw projector can avoid using keystone when placed at an optimum position, giving pixel-perfect output. Ultra short throw seems not the case and keystone is always needed due to its projection direction.
The digital micromirror devices in DLP projectors like this aren't subject to burn in. But one sacrifices a good deal in native contrast compared to emissive panel TVs like OLED. OLED has practically infinite native contrast: when a pixel is off, its off. DLP projectors at best yield about a 1200:1 native contrast ratio. The 5050UB 3xLCD in this comparison is in their ultrablack line, and produces about 6000:1 native contrast. Its much much better than Epson's entry level 3xLCD projectors, which are only produce around 800:1. The main thing one pays for in projector land is native contrast.
I wouldn't think that it would unless you are using your speakers for bass instead of a sub. You could always use something like rubber feet to keep it in place. I figure it's got a little weight to it. You just want to measure to make sure it is big enough.
What's the height clearance if I go with a 135-inch screen? I have plenty of room on my wall(20x30). I think that's the screen size you reviewed with my LG HU85LA. Thanks
Beauty of short throw projector is that I can just pick it up and place in my garage for game nights. Regular projectors are just stuck at one place. Also not to forget $500-700 for professional installation and included need of more hardware like hdmi cables and all.
My current media room is over 10 years old and used a 1080P DLP projector with a standard (for that time) screen. I would love to see a video showing how to upgrade such a setup. I know that upgrading the projector to 4K will require upgrading the receiver, but will I need to do the screen at the same time? Will long throw 4K laser projectors work with the old style screens? Everything that I have seen, so far, assumes that I will be starting from scratch.

Thinking about getting the LG projector. But also wanted to know what elite aeon clr series screen do you recommend with the LG short throw projector. I see there are three series ? Can find series 1 available currently in the market, should I wait for a particular screen ?
Does this mean the any a regular projector ALR screen will work with an ultra-short throw? I thought ultra-short throws needed a special ALR surface for the upward angle?
Thanks Chris! I presume your existing one is a long throw? Do you lose a lot using it with an ultra-short throw? Btw, love your work on the channel, your content is always fantastic, keep it coming!
I am doing a theater style setup in my bedroom but I have deep vaulted ceilings and a large ceiling fan. I can get around it by mounting a projector further past the fan. My question is, what good projector will throw a 120” to 150” image at 15’ to 16’? As long as it’s at or under 4K (price wise) I’m okay with that. I am really hesitant on ordering a motorized screen until I get the projector mounted and set up so I know exactly what size screen to order.
Hey Chris please I need your help , I just got a 72 inch rising screen but I don’t know whats the best affordable projector (brand ) and how much lumens I need 😟?? For a bright living room
Hi Chris, glad you mentioned screen size limitation in this video. After subscribing & watching many of your vids, along w/hours of research & calls, seems UST specific screens / horizontal lenticular i could find all over up to 120" (possibly a limitation of material?) or 150" some ALR but non UST. Many of us with UST projectors supporting 150" would trade 150" larger screen for some screen contrast loss. For frequently watching with lights on/some daylight through windows, would love your thoughts on if 150" UST specific screen isnt available, what could be the next best option ALR at 150" for a UST such as the Vava 4K UST?
Image warping can be a nightmare if you are using a regular wall, screen painted wall, or a suspended / non-tab-tensioned screen with an ultra short throw; any surface that you project on that is not perfectly flat. Long throw is more tolerant of imperfect surfaces because of the angle of the light projection.
Is there any UST projector that you would recommend for gaming? Something around 20ms when in "gaming mode" would be ideal. I don't even know if that even exists with projectors

Pls help in buying between ls 500 vs Epson 6050 in a light controlled room
Are you able to mount a short throw to the ceiling? Or does it have to be from below the projector screen?
Nice video, thenks. Would you recommend an ultra short throw projector for a house with a toddler that can touch it or move it?
Nice TV stand for short throw projector @ 6:14
Hi Chris,
2:42 what is this lighting you use behind the screen?
Nice video... but didn't you forget the edge sharpness.?
This is a good point and something i forgot to mention
@@ChrisMajestic No worries bro👊
In relation to cost...doesn't the screen for the Ultra Short Throw cost a lot more ❓ Great video again...welcome back.
My friend's have also had very good luck with their projectors (different brands) lasting years.
i think LG doesnt wanna replace the whole unit if something goes wrong so the internal parts have to be replaceable
Hi Chris, which Cinema projector could you recommend to watch football in wide venue?
Placement for ultra short throw: put them in the ceiling? We have a short throw btw 104" on about 1.5 meter throw distance , which is half the short side of our living room. The vertical distance does matter too.
Do the Short throw projector have to have a special screen or can I use my Gray 16:9 SI 110inch screen already?
I am getting a projector to use for camping and a secondary theater set up in the basement. What would you suggest on a budget of up to $400?
How do the short throwers handle 21:9 screens?
Chris, how come you have not talked about anachromatic lens or projecting on to 2.35:1 wide screen. Getting full picture on wide screen is very desired and there is not much info about which projectors can do it automatically. Thanks for your work
Hi I’m looking for a new Ultra short throw projector, is this LG HU85LA the best out there just now? Thanks
Is there a better choice if you’re projecting on a slanted ceiling?
Doesn't putting a projector directly onto a centre speaker mean that there will be vibration of the projected image?
How does the Epson long throw in your video compare to the Epson ls500?
Hi Chris, i want to buy the optoma uhd60 or the uhd 65, with the Elite screens 135 inch. Can you tell me the distance between the screen and the projector. I have put the electric plug on the celling and becose you have the same screen and projector, you can help me.....thanks you
If you sit the device on top of the center channel speaker, does vibrations from the speaker not transmit to the picture?
I am ceiling mounting Samsung LSP9T. I currently have a vu tech white screen. Should I install an alr screen and should the screen be installed upside down?
Can you mount a UST to the ceiling?
Hey Chris can you review Optoma cinemaX p2 and what the difference between the p1 and p2
Its currently being shipped to me so I hope to have a review up soon
I just want to see side by side pictures of the same content in the same room of a good long throw and good short throw projector. I need to replace my old long throw and can't decide if I want to go with the formovie or some regular long throw
I am in the middle of installing an ultra short throw projector in my living room, and plan on using blackout motorized blinds as the screen. I would love for you to give your thoughts on this.
What is the LED strip solution you used behind the screen? To what sources can it connect?

@@ChrisMajestic Thanks, will look into it. Can this be used together with a receiver? I have this on PC monitor now using Prismatik -- no HDMI capturing needed since information is generated by PC. I'm wondering if it has added value on a projector screen, since the immersion is already that much higher.
Hey Chris, if I want to mount the ultra-short projector on the ceiling, what type of screen will be best since the ALR screens will be out of propose?
Trying to figure out which type of projector to get as I purchased the Sony 325es but would like to know your opinion on UST that may be better with contrast and HDR?
Hi Chris , can you please share the ceiling mount that you have used . Thanks.
What about keystones no one seems to mention if this is an issue with these during setup?
Shouldn't you use an ALR screen for long throw to compare each projector with "compatible" screen?
2 years have passed since this video was made, have ultra short throw projectors' picture quality caught up with long throw? If you had to choose between Epson LS12000 or ForMovie, which would you recommend?
Can the LG Short throw be mounted to the ceiling ? If so i cant seem to find a mount ? Help thanks
Hey Chris.. Great video.. question.. is it a suitable long term solution for the UST to be on top of the Center channel? Just trying to figure out the best placement for it along with my center... SVS ultra Center... Thanks!
I know I'm not Chris. But it shouldn't be an issue, unless the vibrations from the speaker are moving the projector slowly over time. Just my 2 cents.
Can the LG HU85LA be mounter on the ceiling?
I have a Mitsubishi Hc6800. I am using an 8x8 wall with a 4 feet inset wall for a screen. Will the Optoma ALR101e 100-inch High Performance Projector Screen with Ambient Light Technology - Black be beneficial for me? I do understand it is smaller than my wall.
How bad does image get when you move ultra short throw bigger than what it’s rated for? So let’s say I moved the 130in ls500 from epson to 200 inches?
Is burn-in a concern with laser projectors like it is with OLED or other traditional panels?
@@MrDarrylR Good to know, thanks!
It will not effect the vibration of center s.during playbck?
Should the projector sit on top of your center channel? I would be concerned about vibration.
I wouldn't think that it would unless you are using your speakers for bass instead of a sub. You could always use something like rubber feet to keep it in place. I figure it's got a little weight to it. You just want to measure to make sure it is big enough.
looking for the best portable projector that has potential for outdoor use, any suggestions?
What's the height clearance if I go with a 135-inch screen? I have plenty of room on my wall(20x30). I think that's the screen size you reviewed with my LG HU85LA. Thanks
Now that the LG H10PW is out, keeping other things aside, which one is better just in terms of picture quality between the HU810pw and HU85LA?
Thanks Chris! An IMPORTANT video for me. My short list is HISENSE L9 vs the 5050UB Or LG HU810PW. Chris, WHO WINS, for picture quality ?
Chris i want to buy a laser 4k ust projector is it worth waiting for the new laser projector by samsung or lg is the best
Question about the Amplified Alien, I know that a different video but you probably won’t reply to the old video.
I got a 2000 square foot home should I get mesh or stand alone? Thanks
Great review Chris. What are your thoughts on the Epson LS800, and what's the best acoustically transparent screen to go with the short throw projectors??? The Hisense L9 has a screen to go with it.
One more question Chris. What's the height clearance if I go with a 135-inch screen? I have plenty of room on my wall(20x30). I think that's the screen size you reviewed with my LG HU85LA. Thanks
Cool, what would be the best projector for shining shows onto a building? I often hear just a short throw, but really, which is best?
Dear Chris, would you review for us Epson LS-500 UST projector Android TV by comparing to Optoma CinemaX P2 and LG HU85LS
Thanks!
Thinking about getting the LG projector. But also wanted to know what elite aeon clr series screen do you recommend with the LG short throw projector. I see there are three series ? Can find series 1 available currently in the market, should I wait for a particular screen ?
Does the LG interface have Atmos support? If not, then we are still stuck to an Apple-TV.
Does this mean the any a regular projector ALR screen will work with an ultra-short throw? I thought ultra-short throws needed a special ALR surface for the upward angle?
There are 2 different types of alr screens. Some work better with short throws and ultra short throws. And some are meant to be used with long throws.
Thanks Chris! I presume your existing one is a long throw? Do you lose a lot using it with an ultra-short throw? Btw, love your work on the channel, your content is always fantastic, keep it coming!
The one in this video is meant for UST projectors. But it still looks good with the Epson
Hey i got the e0son 5050ub and im gettin the 150" elite screen. What is the minimum distance my projector needs to be to fill the entire screen?
Is there any UST projector that you would recommend for gaming? Something around 20ms when in "gaming mode" would be ideal. I don't even know if that even exists with projectors
