This video disappeared from RUclips for many years, nice to see it back, the WILD SWANS album BRINGING HOME THE ASHES, is on MY Top-10 80's list for sure...!
I picked this album up in 1987 in a hole in the wall store's bargain bin in Wellesley MA. Been a top 10 "new wave" album since then, especially this song. But the other 9 are not far behind. Love Paul Simpson's voice.
@Shannon Matthews I suspect that Paul offered an element of irony, framing the song as 'bible dreams', rather than Biblical wisdom. Yes, the flying paper could represent change, the transience of 'news' and diurnal concerns, but to me, on set and on screen, it was just a one -trick pony: a mess. Further, we probably paid about £30k for that idea to be realised, which in my view was a lazy (on the part of the 'director') an error (on our part) and a mistake (on the part of Sire), because the key purpose of a music video is to promote the ideas and sound of the music. If only we'd known about Michel Gondry back then...
@@brotherpluckker Yikes! I had no idea you're Jeremy Kelly. Coincidentally, I ordered the green vinyl reissue of "Bringing Home The Ashes" from Rough Trade UK earlier this week. It should be shipping to the US shortly!
@@aamirqz I was fortunate to get an advance copy and I have to say: it's gorgeous. The vinyl and sleeve quality is superb, although I haven't dared play it yet - off to buy some Monkey Shoulder (whiskey) then will chance a spin!
"Just Say Yo" was a fantastic compilation, wasn't it? I need to find a used copy of the CD with the original liner notes. When I bought my first proper stereo system at the age of 19, I would often play "Black Coffee" (KD Lang) and "Bacchanal Lady" (David Rudder) to test the various speakers I was considering at the time.
@@brotherpluckker No doubt, it really was a gem. It was like a dream mash up of Joy Division/New Order and the Smiths with a unique twist. It's still in my playlist to this day.
@@illiamdeebe7579 many thanks. I tried not to sound like anyone else, being self-taught, but the first band I saw was Joy Division and I stood watching Barnie play through a Vox AC30 and thought, 'I could do this'. The Wild Swans first time around was arguably more innovative, guitar-wise, and preceded The Sm,iths by a good few years.
Love this song. I bought Bringing Home The Ashes when it came out and still listen to it today. Quite New Orderish but they've got their own thing going on as well.
The smiths , the opposition, the wild swans , images in vogue, big country , the Riverside y railway children para mi una de mi banda favorita de los ochentas
Tears in my eyes as I listen to this right now while reading Paul Simpson's book, Revolutionary Spirit. Bringing Home the Ashes is one of my Top 5 New Wave albums.
Just been listening to The Cure - Charlotte Sometimes, and this popped up in the side list. Never heard of them before. And I lived through 1988. Mandela effect
Si vos m parecía muy chillona.. comercial ... Pero al seguir escuchando su música m encanto mucho su vos y sus músicos muy buenos gracias.le digo escuchando.en las tardes cuando el sol está en el atardecer m da mucha tranquilidad y paz
Not to be reductive but this is the final and longstanding proof that theres no such thing as too much reverb or chorus. I remember setting off for a heartbroken train journey from the North in 1989 to stay with my sister in London. The subject of my unrequited love was, by chance, on the same bus into town as me and we made awkward conversation if you can even call it that, following an awkward declaration of love in a club with sticky carpets, an excess of Dubonnet and lemonade and the scent of white musk and patchouli a few nights previous. Bringing Home the Ashes was, inexplicably, in an HMV bargain bin near the station for 99p. The cover looked interesting. I was skint and needed something to listen to on my cheap portable cassette player. It not only got me through the journey on repeated playings and entranced my older sibling shortly after my arrival at her place, it affects me greatly 35 years later.
I loved the world when we were poor, When winter banged on summer's door And pain was April rain upon my skin. I sheltered as each friend was tamed And shackled by the wedding game, Now life has left this stain upon my skin. Soldier boy, soldier on Your eyes are cold and the spark has gone. My blackest days were bandaged white I prayed upon my darkest night, And bible dreams the lives of former whores. I slept beside this angry calm, kept faith alive and far from harm, Torn I've lived, I'll die a boy stillborn. Soldier boy, soldier on Your eyes are cold and the spark has gone. They've chosen you to bear the stain But God has left this world bereft and the scars remain.

Paul has such a great voice
underrated as hell
I can still remember the massive fan blowing all that paper about - I still haven;t figured out what it was meant to represent...

If I hadn't bought the Sire Music Sampler (vol 2) I would have never heard this brilliant song. How was it not a huge hit?
We never toured the album, or I strongly think it would have been.

the guitarist looks like he's straight out of Star Trek... either Data or some other random crew member of the Starship Enterprise

Imagine 6.35milliom but the watchers 43k😂
Why two mics when you're miming???
Stereophonic
Why not?
Stage presentation could still be creative.
the guitar player is from another new wave band LOTUS EATERS...
He was originally in The Wild Swans before they split, then went on to The Lotus Eaters
House of Love and Jesus and Mary Chain vibes?
