Fast forward 37 years, as my 91 year old mom is getting ready to finally rejoin dad, this song resonates now, as much as it did in 1984.

I listen to WDRV 97.1 FM Chicago and this lady that ran the overnight program Allison DJ I had my son ring hrt up and when she said what could I play for you? We had practiced yelling into the phone... 3 words lady... The Cars - Drive! Then hang the landline phone ☎️ up real hard. So I ask Allie about it couple weeks later and she says yeah some little kid called in a request real mean then hung up? Yeah I know something to entertain you at 3am in the morning

My parents divorced in the mid 80s. On the weekends my dad would pick up my sister and I, and we would head to Bar Harbor for the day. I distinctly remember the ride home laying in the back of his dodge charger, just finished eating my happy meal, and listening to this song. To this day it stands out as one of my happiest memories in one of the most confusing and saddest periods of my life. My dad passed away the beginning of this year. We didn't always see eye to eye, but I miss him so much. I'm so grateful for this song and the memories that come with it. Love you dad.

I was a lifeguard at a large swim club when this song came out and for some reason, this song is locked in my brain at a moment as a high school teenager. It was early in the morning before the club opened, and I was alone, vacuuming the pool. The sun had just come up and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. It was going to be a perfect summer day at the best job a teenager could have in the 1980's summertime. I had the music on over the pool speakers and this song came on and I remember having this peaceful feeling as I stood there quietly enjoying the early morning silence, the still water shimmering except for the ripples caused by the pole on the vacuum, with this song as the backdrop before the day got busy. I won’t ever forget that moment and I think of it every time I hear this song. RIP Ric and Benjamin. Your music lives on in memories like these. And, I too had a Walkman……

For me the 80s was my mom chain smoking cigarettes in the car with her window cracked, getting McDonald’s almost every day when my dad was deployed, cartoons, playing outside til the street lights came on. I used to try singing like MaDonna! I was just a little kid then. Hair was big! Everyone looks back nostalgically at different decades. I honestly am glad I grew up before social media, etc... There was dial-up by the time I was in 4th grade, but it wasn’t common to have. There were “car phones,” but I never saw them. And the giant 80’s mobile phone looked like a giant walk-in-talkie. 😂 It wasn’t that great honestly. But it’s better than what my kids are growing up with today.
P.S. Not everyone had cable, but if a kid on your block did, you’d be posted watching MTV music videos or you’d make mixed tapes off of the radio.

This is one of those songs that defines a time in my life. I was 21, pregnant and working at the Pizza Hut at night and attending college in the day. After we shut down at night I would play this song on the jukebox while cleaning. I remember the feeling of not knowing what my life was going to be like after the birth of my child. So many unknowns for the future.
33 years later my daughter was pregnant with her second child and suffered an AVM rupture in her brain. She coded 5 times. Was in the hospital 2 months and we expected her at first to not survive the night then, as she pulled through we expected severe brain damage.
I heard this song again while driving to and from the hospital. Again so many unknowns for the future.
3 years later her mind is sound as ever but she has visual and balance problems. He baby is perfect.
Music has the special ability to connect us instantly with a time, place and emotion. I have more than one song that represents something but this one, this one carries a special feeling of "waiting for the unknown. "

My dad used to love this song, he had it on cassette he'd play in his car really often. I've had this on Spotify since I got the app.. my dad passed away in July 2021.. he was diagnosed with cancer on the very last stage and the doctors couldn't do anything cause it had spread to his lungs, kidneys, liver, bladder and arteries..
This always reminds me of him now.. brings tears to my eyes cause how much he cared.. He'd always picked me from work, dropped me off and we'd talk about everything and anything. He'd stay up late waiting for me when I was out for dinner "who's gonna tell you, it's too late"
He would talk to me about the issues we faced financially "who's gonna tell you things, aren't so great"
And now that he's gone I can't "go on thinking nothing's wrong"
He was always there when I was broken "who's gonna pick you up when you fall"
"Who's gonna pay attention to your dreams?" He never had me spend anything for anything other than the things that I needed and wanted I had everything I wanted cause he was there for me. For us. 😭
He paid for my education all the way through to the end. And I feel like I wasn't even able to make up for it.
I'm happy I got to spend his last days right by his side. He held my hand so tight every time in the last few days, he was unable to speak but I always felt like he wanted to say something to me.. May his soul rest in peace. ❤️😭
This song shall forever remind me of him. Even though I know that's not the intended meaning behind the video or the song but that's the beauty of the song, it could translate to a specific thing for the different audience.

I didn’t know it at the time, but it’s about his girlfriend who’s a drug addict and he’s asking her all those questions, finally realizing there’s no hope for her or their relationship. My Dad was born in 61'. He loved classic cars and he loved this band among others. I remember him working in the garage on his days off from the fire department, 70s and 80s music playing. When he had parties he would make playlists and it was just good times. Besides being a good father, he was also a great person. Having looked back on his life, I think he unknowingly discovered the secret of life. He may not have known it, but I aspire to be everything he was.
I travel a lot for my job, and on my way home every night I listen to a lot of the songs he loved and pretend he's riding next to me. Tonight I listened to this and kept it repeating.
RIP, dad. Gone way too soon.

My daughter is 18, my older son is 16, and my youngest son is 11. All we knew was we just loved it but looking back It's sweeter now because of the memories. Every band had a distinct sound & their own identity.

There was sincerity, realness, back in the 80's. When these iconic artists performed. Nowadays, most of the so called "music" is hollow, without true substance. Billy Idol, The Cars, Hall&Oates, Zapp & Roger, Chaka Khan Michael Jackson, Prince, Huey Lewis, Grand Master Flash, Sugar Hill Gang, , L.L. Cool J just to name a few brought us into mindset of the realities of life!! There are some great young artists today. Taking nothing from these young performers, but, in my reserved opinion, they all "pale in comparison" to the Old School Artists. The Mood the soul, the experiences of my day, were expressed through their songs!

When people think of the Cars they think Ric Ocasek. But Benjamin Orr sang all their biggest hits.

Ric & his wife Paulina (girl in this video) divorced a couple years ago. So sad that all the great rock singers are slowly dying off. RIP Ric & Ben. Your music is timeless and was a great inspiration to me, and many others.

Holly crap! I remember listening to this song on the radio in my pick-up truck right after a work-out session at a gym not too far from Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, late 1984 (I was an airman stationed there at the time). Snow was thick on the ground and it was cold as heck outside, but I just sat there in my truck at the gym parking lot listening hypnotized by this enchanting tune.

This song has a place in my heart. I lost my dad 2 years ago to pancreatic cancer. I would drive him to his weekly chemo and radiation treatments that were an hour away and we would talk and listen to music, clearing our minds of this brutal disease. This was one of many songs that would come on and it sticks with me now. I found out later Benjamin Orr died from the same cancer.

This band defined what the 80s were. Lots of great hits but this one always stuck out to me as their best track. R.I.P Ben Orr, us fans can only imagine how much more good music could have potentially came from The Cars had you not been taken from us so soon.

+blacc beard over and over i see the same comments about the 80´s. I am glad to have lived my high school and college days during that time. I don´t see other years talked about as much as the 80´s. It was a time way before the internet...where we were actually a lot more social and went out instead of being stuck behind a computer screen like most people these days.

You know I've probably heard this song a thousand times if I've heard it once, but on the day you posted this comment I heard it on the radio, I turned up the volume a little bit, and I'm not sure what it was, but it was like I was hearing it for the first time, and now I can't get it (that feeling I had that i was hearing it for the first time), or that feeling you posted about, out of my head. Perhaps something was making connections that day ??
