I'm 3 minutes in and you explaining the exact body structure/flow you use for your cuts has blown me away man, fantastic advice and I definitely look forward to giving it a go on some trees soon, thanks!
Hi Akiva, I ordered comfrey roots from you. Edible acres was out of them and recommended you. I ordered from two companies, but your shipment was far superior. It took a while, but I have now planted all of them on our five acres and they're doing great! Thank you so much!
Man, I love that you're into youtube now! I've been interested in your work since I heard you on Diego's podcast. Because of you and Sean at Edible Acres I've decided to start doing my own propagation work at my farm with pretty great results. Thank you, keep at these youtube videos!
Thanks Akiva for this very informative video.... I'm a big fan and try to sit and watch every video you produce. Please keep making them they are indispensable to help us propagate more fruit and nut trees. Can't thank you enough... :)
First off thank you for all your wonderful videos Akiva, and I hope you will soon make more of them :) LOVE your gardening philosophy. Questions about grafting: 1. When grafting does the age of the rootstock or the age of the scion determine when the tree will bear fruit? 2. If I air layer/stool layer/trench layer an apple tree that is old enough to be fruit-bearing - will the rooted cutting I cut off also be ready to bear fruit?
I grafted 12 trees for the first time a month ago. I totally shoved a razor blade into my thumb on the 3rd graft doing a cleft graft. It healed in about a week. Finished the grafts the following weekend.
Awesome they don't sell those knifes at my local garden store ...and oddly enough i asked why and they told me that grafting won't work up here in northern Ontario which i think is bull crap....anyway I've got a few suckering crab apples that are super cold hardy bastards lol and would love to get some scions of different cultivars and try it out. Cool video
You can get grafting knives online from OESCO or A.M. Leonard. That is weird that they said it wouldn't work in northern climates, makes no sense. As if no one in the north could grow fruit trees!
Twisted Tree Farm yeah i know i was shocked i felt shut down and depressed but I've been following ur channel for a while and see the success u have and i said theres no way shes right ....thanks for the advice appreciate it ill look there for sure.
Before grafting, taking scions out of cold storage, do you let them warm up for some time, or just go right to the grafting. I like to put them in a jar of water for a day or so first. Not sure if it’s necessary. Thanks
This year I am going to try something I haven’t before. Instead of cutting scions in winter, I am going to take them right before dormancy break. This is also when I prefer to prune. Idea being wound stays open for shorter duration. Anyways..Instead if cutting scions early and having to store, I’m thinking of taking them a few days before grafting.
Great video. I have done every part of propagation/growth of trees except grafting, mostly bc of time, but was thinking of using the 15 acres of wild apple trees I have interspersed throughout my property and grafting the specific cultivars I have onto these crab/wild rootstocks while they are still in the ground, after lopping off the main leader, of small seedlings of course. Not sure if you will respond, but if so, have you seen or heard of success from this? I have slightly seen it mentioned, but what I do see, as I live in Wayyy upstate NY, that some trees are better than others but that this way might be the best way to graft selected/preferred malus cultivars?

'it's a good way to add awesome trees into the world' Just Epic :D Thanks for the video!

Best grafting video I have seen. Love the attention to the motions of the cuts.
Thanks so much for the vid Akiva! Like a samurai! Ha ha love it! This is Austin

Jeez!, only so many times a person can cut themselves. I know I've had enough bad cuts that I'm never grafting without a safety glove.
You may it look so easy. Thank you.

Really awesome video. Well explained and I really enjoyed it.
So it sounds like you don't pot them up or plant them until after your last frost? Do they start leafing out in your basement?

You are doing the good work my friend.
Thank you Travis

Hey Akiva! How do you acquire and propagate your rootstock for your own supply? Thanks for the awesome video :)
Awesome!

Nvm. Just read this part in your book. Bench vs field.
Very good info thank you
Good information cheers.
Great Vid! How are you liking the Liberty apple? I just planted a couple because we have cedar apple rust down in NJ.
Liberty is great apple, one of the most disease resistant, if not the most.
Great!👏👌👏
